Food for thought

we look to the Lord and trust in his care our fear will be replaced with peace”.

We must always remember that God is faithful; we can depend on him; He will never let us down.

By Danny In these trying times we can often be overwhelmed by the circumstances of our lives or the events that are happening around us. I believe the Bible holds the truth that can liberate us from anxiety, confusion and fear that we carry and gives us hope, purpose and joy. Proverbs gives clear instructions for us to live successfully in every area of our lives. Chapter 3: 56, says "With all your heart, you must trust the Lord and not your own judgment. Always let Him lead you, and He will clear the road for you to follow." Trust or faith requires that we turn all our problems - all our situations, all our fears, all our anxieties into the hand of the Lord. We must acknowledge that God possess the power to help us out of our crisis. David C. Casland said “In stressful, confusing situations, we might ask a worried, what now? But if “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not unto your own understanding “ Proverbs 3:5

November 2008 Vision Newsletter Cooperating with God!....... ___________________________________________________________________________________________________ reassurance let us examine the Recession and You natural perspective on the word recession. Broadcasters, journalists, teachers, students, employers, in fact people from all walks of life are using the word recession on a daily basis. Examples of current headlines that paint a picture of this fearful environment are ‘Asia Stocks Drop As Global Recession Fears Fly’, ‘Bank of England Pressed To Cut Interest Rates by Full Point’, ‘Slump Will Hit Britain Hardest’, ‘BT Axes 10,000 Jobs As Crisis Deepens’. FEAR in the economy (the result of millions of people's actions) is the general impact on the society. Despite this the child of God is promised untold blessings and miracles when they plant seed to help preach the gospel of salvation. Malachi 3:10-12 provides one of the conditions for blessings in recessionary times, “Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing that there shall not be room enough to receive it. And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the Lord of hosts. And all nations shall call you blessed: for ye shall be a delightsome land, saith the Lord of hosts.” Christians are encouraged to operate on the principle that God has not given us a spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7). With that

McConnell and Brue (1993) define recession as “a period of decline in total output, income, employment and trade, lasting six months or longer. This downturn is marked by widespread contractions of business in many sectors of the economy….the price level is likely to fall only if the recession is severe and prolonged – that is if a depression occurs. An old one liner is when your neighbour Provide loses his job transferable it’s a recession; skills that when you they can lose your adapt... job it’s a depression.” different The diagram career jobs in the next column illustrates the downward spiral or recession:

(Harris 2008). However, the government and the monetary system (banks etc.) want you to spend money so that the economy can go into the recovery phase and eventually return to growth conditions. The opposite of a recession is the upward spiral as illustrated in the following diagram:

Some of the ways in which a recession can start are via over-production -- a situation in which the supply exceeds the nation's ability to consume. Also, terrorist acts such as September 11th tragedy contributed to a recession as people become fearful of flying. Wars such as World War II and that in Iraq also contribute to a recession. In the current recession, a lot of people who have been laid off are spending as little as possible, and many people who fear they may be laid off are also saving their money

Stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord … “Jobless rate at a decade high”, “Housing shortages”, “Credit crisis hits 2012”, “Businesses go bust!”, “Inflated food and fuel prices”, “Rising Homelessness” “Worldwide Panic”, “Starvation on the Rise!” With these headlines and more blasting the airwaves and occupying the front pages of our daily newspapers, even cosmopolitan magazines have included sections that forecast advice to help us safeguard against this impending disaster. The world’s largest, most influential database is bombarded with a plethora of predictions for the current socio-economic situation-The Global Financial Credit Crunch. Additionally, the recent election of America’s first black president has found many in a state of euphoria as they see this bold move as the necessary solution to a heal a nation in crisis and save a world from doom. What amazes me most is that even in this situation humanity still fails to acknowledge the reality of God in His infinite existence and sovereignty. It is in these times we as God’s children are both challenged and encouraged as we see prophesies fulfilled and we know that the coming of our saviour is not far off. Sadly enough, without exception to the general trend many of God’s children are being tossed with the wind. But

Don’t look at the wind, Cooperate with God the word of God holds firm and serves as an encouragement, that in this dispensation we should fear not, and stand still for we shall surely see the salvation of the Lord. It is natural for us to become anxious and even fearful but we must not become immobilised by fear for it is the absence of faith and it repels what faith embraces. Prosperity in times of famine is not a new concept to God for scripture shows us that the very forefathers of our faith; Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, ALL were blessed in times of famine. Isaiah declares “ Behold I will do a new things and it shall spring forth: shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.” Job 5:20 also supports that in famine God shall redeem thee from death and in war from the power of the sword. Yahweh is still the God who opens and shuts doors and the dominion that He has given us to replenish, multiply, reign and rule and to subdue in the earth has not been revoked. Therefore we still have the power to command the spirit of lack to flee and decree and declare the will and favour of God to be manifested in our lives, in the name of Jesus! We are covenant people and so great and wondrous are the promises of God for us. Our empowerment lies in knowledge that God watches over His word to perform it (Jeremiah 1:12b). He is not man that He should lie, nor the son of man, that He should change his mind. Does He

speak and not act? Does He promise and not fulfil? (Numbers 23:19). In this era: This book of the law must not depart out of our mouths, but we must meditate therein day and night and observe to do all that is written therein: For then shall we make our way prosperous and we SHALL have good success! This will allow us pursue after the righteousness of God which puts us in line to prosper and we shall be like trees planted by the rivers of water that bringeth forth fruit in due season and our leaves also shall not wither …(Psalm 1:3). Finally, our victory lies in power of God’s word, after all the weapons of our warfare are not carnal (therefore the worldly solutions don’t apply to us) but are MIGHTY through God to the pulling down of strong holds, casting down imaginations and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge God and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ. Thus we are able to relinquish the spirit of fear and Stand still to see the salvation of our Lord … Power verses Have I not commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest. (Joshua 1:9) The earth is the LORD’S and the fullness thereof, the world, and they that dwell therein. (Psalms 24:1) By Dolly McPherson

ii) the employed are saving and returning to the system by paying taxes on earnings and assets acquired (mortgages etc.); some find it more beneficial to rent at this time. Their spending can be spread over a larger number of goods and services. Since the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers bank commuters are bombarded by the Metro newspapers that highlight job cuts. Employees no longer focus on if they will get a bonus as the best bonus is to have any job at all. The unfortunate side of job losses is that some people have lost their homes to repossession and this is likely to continue. Until the final payment is made on a mortgage the home belongs to the bank/financing company. Hence the theory has been put into practice. People are spending less and trying to save more out of fears they will lose their job. If people continue to save the extra funds no change will happen. Hence, the world central banks and the government need to intervene to regulate the economy. The G20 Finance Ministers met this month to discuss strategies and consider increasing aid to poorest countries.

iii) pensioners are using their savings from their working periods. Unfortunately, the rate of inflation has considerably reduced the value of their portfolio. They are constantly appealing to the government for relief in the utility rates as oil prices surge to astronomical heights. iv) the unemployed being cared for by general tax pool employers and employed.

v) Businesses are closing down by the day. It is difficult to collect from customers who owe and sales are minimal or nonexistent due to loss of jobs, low income earners etc. The Federal Reserve System, the central bank of the United States was founded in Congress in 1913 to provide the nation with a safer, more flexible, and more stable monetary and financial system; its role in banking and the economy has expanded over the years. The duties include: -

-

Conducting the nation’s monetary policy by influencing the money and credit conditions in the economy in pursuit of full employment and stable prices. Supervising and regulating banking institutions to ensure the safety and soundness of the nation’s banking and financial system

and to protect the credit right of consumers Maintaining the stability of the financial system and containing systemic risk that may arise in financial markets. Providing certain financial services to the U.S. government, to the public, to financial institutions, and to foreign official institutions, including playing a major role in operating the nation’s payments system.

Most developed countries have a central bank whose functions are broadly similar to those of the Federal Reserve. The Bank of England has existed since the end of the seventeenth century. Napolean I established the Banque de France in 1800, and the bank of Canada began operations in 1935. The German central bank was reestablished after World War II and is loosely modelled on the Federal Reserve. With the election of Barak Obama as the first black president of the United States, the optimism has restored some confidence in the global economic markets. The G20 ministers of finance are confident that they control or run things but the word of God indicates that there will be a transfer of wealth if we look not at the wind because Isaac sowed seed during famine, an unnatural thing to do and received a hundredfold harvest within months, i.e. in the same year. Isaac was so blessed the Philistines envied him for he had possession of flocks, and

VisionNLA Newsletter - November possession of herds, and great store of servants (Gen 26:14). God says he knows every hair that we have on our head and that he cares for us. I encourage you to cast all your cares upon him and sow seed into the kingdom of God. Myles Munroe often says that an ambassador for a kingdom pays no bills. It is the kingdom that has responsibility for that. Hence if you are working for the Lord he will take care of you by providing a job, business, contracts, favour, whatever is required to ensure that you represent him well. If you buy a washing machine and it does not work it is returned to the manufacturer. In the same way when something is not working in our lives we can go back (return) to our creator as Jabez did and pray “O that thou wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that thine hand might be with me, and that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me! And God granted him that which he requested.” (1 Chronicles 4:10) Let us who are called by His name humbly call on Him in prayer for he promises to hear from heaven and heal our land. Cory: She knows it’s because you care. Rachel: Last week I sat down and thought about us, The inseparable three. Remember when Sis Bernard tried to split us up in Sunday school and Thie complained to Pastor that we were just trying to encourage each other in the Lord. Cory: ha-ha I remember, then she went on to talk about Christian persecution and that splitting up the saints was a tactic used to make them weaker so that they would later deny Christ and their Christian believes. Ha. Pastor just promoted us to the next class to shut us up and get us out of Sis. Bernard’s hair.

Rachel: Yeah and it was in that new class that we started to learn about the foundations of Christianity and we decided to follow the Lord in water baptism. It was such a good experience being baptised with my two best friends. It’s so hard not to see her with us whilst we’re worshiping. Cory: Yeah I know… Don’t worry about it I’ll try and talk to her. Later that night Cory rings Cynthie Cory: Hey Thie are you OK Cynthie: Yeah I’m sorry about earlier. I know I’ve been a bit distant lately. To be honest I don’t feel the same.
