BMC provides specialist vocational and academic training in all aspects of the Performing Arts and Media industry. The courses develop practical skills as well theoretical knowledge in order to support you into becoming creative, ‘thinking’ performers and film makers.
How do you find being a part of BMC, as opposed to a larger city university? Being a part of BMC is great – it has a sense of community throughout the entire place that most other places simply do not have.
You have opportunities to work with professional companies and live competition briefs in order to help develop your industry contacts and experience.
What do you plan to do after graduating? I plan on going home to Ireland and starting my journey in the Performing Arts industry.
As well as working in our 340 seat professional theatre and Green Screen Studio, we also take students out to perform at the RSC’s Swan Theatre, Sadler’s Wells, Her Majesty’s Theatre, the Y Theatre and location filming.
Do you have any advice for people who are considering studying BA Performing Arts at BMC? Go for it! The Performing Arts Degree at BMC offers massive opportunities for everyone who gets involved.
The department has a varied enrichment programme which has included residential visits to New York, LA, and the Encounters Film Festival.
WhAT OUR STUDENTS SAY... Fintan Woods BA Performing Arts Why did you choose to study Performing Arts? It has always been a dream of mine to be a professional performer, and I thought that BMC would be a good place to study to reach this goal.
Shekinah McFarlane BMC Performing Arts Alumni My career so far has come on in leaps and bounds since studying at Brooksby Melton College. I got straight into training in London, and straight from my year of training there, I went on to my first professional show straight away. Since then, I have been able to go on the Lion King tour and take part in a revival of ‘Hair’ the musical in Manchester, which was incredible.
Why did you choose to come to BMC to study your degree? BMC was one of few institutions offering a top-up to students who had previously completed a HND in Performing Arts. I had also seen and heard great things about the Melton Campus, so I wanted to finish my degree there.
If you are thinking about coming to Brooksby Melton College to study your BA in Performing Arts, you have no better choice because it will help you grow not only as a performer but also as a person.
What, in your opinion, makes the Performing Arts degree at BMC unique? For me, the Performing Arts degree at BMC is unique because of the teaching staff, who have experience as industry professionals, and the fact that we have access to a commercial theatre - not many places offer that luxury.
I’ve been at BMC for five years now, and during this time it has become like a second home to me – the friend’s I’ve made are like family and the tutors are so supportive – they really push you to be the best that you can be.
What parts of your degree have you enjoyed the most so far? I have enjoyed performing with the Royal Shakespeare Company and on stage with my classmates – these experiences have been absolutely fantastic.
Laura Wheat BMC Performing Arts Student
I initially enrolled on the Level 3 Acting course here at BMC, but I learned how to dance, how to sing, and even learned about backstage operations as well. I have performed at the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford, Her Majesty’s Theatre in London, and even now as I am preparing to
graduate from my degree, BMC has given me the opportunity to create my own theatre company – so BMC will definitely stay with me when I leave.
WhAT OUR STaff SAY... Dr Peter Groves Course Leader: BA (Hons) Performing Arts BA Performing Arts has been delivered at BMC for nearly 25 years. Our full honours degree course, validated by the prestigious University of East Anglia, offers students the opportunity to study a wide variety of performing arts approaches and techniques, in excellent facilities and with experienced and dynamic lecturers. This very practical course, explores performance from Greek tragedy and Shakespeare through to the current practices in screen and digital performance (in our own industry standard green screen studio). In the final year, students work on a full-scale theatre project with a visiting professional performance company. There is also the opportunity to perform at the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Swan Theatre in our annual RSC Project, as well as attend biannual trips to New York and LA.
Dr Jade Yeow Programme Leader: Performing Arts The Performing Arts Degree at BMC allows the student to develop a broad range of skills. As a Dance specialist, the dance route through the Degree is clear – technical training across disciplines (including Contemporary, Jazz, Urban, Ballet), engaging with practitioners currently working in the field, dance for camera and choreography. Working at BMC is a real pleasure, especially when I get to support students in a wide range of performance opportunities, including Her Majesty’s Theatre, Sadler’s Wells, dance platforms and creating full scale work for our in house degree company, Pork Pie Dance Theatre.

Horses for Courses!
Courses FdSc Equine Performance Science BSc (Hons) Equine Performance Science (Top-up) 30
WhAT OUR STUDENTS SAY... Alex Fisher BSc Equine Performance Science Why did you choose to study Equine Performance Science? I’d previously completed a National Diploma in Equine Management and then gone on to work at an Equine yard. I found that there wasn’t much progression within the role and wanted to broaden my job opportunities by gaining a degree. Why did you choose to come to BMC to study your degree? BMC is where I did my Level 3 Extended Diploma, and I enjoyed it when I was there and loved the facilities available. It is also close to where I live, and meant I could continue to work alongside studying. It was a great opportunity for me to complete a degree and continue to work. What, in your opinion, makes the Equine Performance Science degree at BMC unique? I think the course is unique because of the number of people on the course: by being a smaller group, we receive much more support from the lecturers, which is great for getting the most out of the course. The industry knowledge and experience of the tutors also makes the course unique. What parts of your degree have you enjoyed the most so far? I have enjoyed the equitation theory module the most so far. This module has been the most interesting to me as it combines analysing horses with learning about the theoretical side of the analysis. We have often held discussions on what we have been looking at, whether on a video clip or in person, and I found it interesting to discuss people’s opinions and the behaviour of the horses. How do you find being at BMC as opposed to a larger city university? I personally prefer being at BMC. It has more of a relaxed feel but I am still able to access the same opportunities and achieve the same level of education as at a larger university. I feel like I can ask for help from my lecturers if needed,
and I am treated as an individual rather than just a number. What do you plan to do after graduating? I’m planning to complete the top-up year of the BSc Equine Performance Science degree here at BMC, and then either do a PGCE course or go on to complete a master’s degree in Equine Science.
Award Winning Dissertation! We had a chat with BSc Equine Performance Science student, Hope Williams, to see what she had to say about her second prize dissertation poster winning second prize at the UFAW conference this year!
‘The title of my dissertation was ‘Are there differences in faecal pH levels Our Equine Performance Science if riding school horses are fed on Degree taps in to developing dry hay, haylage or soaked-hay?’ I research within the horse industry wanted to study this because I had been looking into previous studies and The scientific aspects give students analytical and evaluative skills vital in dissertations on equine nutrition, and I found that I wanted to conduct my many graduate careers, plus a solid own research in this area. grounding in business studies to help those who wish to set up their I carried out faecal sample collections, own enterprises (for example, as a which were then stored in individual therapist). Staff are highly qualified, both vocationally and academically and enthusiastic about the modules and the programme. They are actively involved in the industry in their own time and some staff are undertaking research to be published which ensures that they are current in their reading and research techniques. Staff are also very supportive of our students’ journey, including after their Degree: we are thrilled to hear their successes in careers postBMC! The equine industry is vast and is comprised of many aspects, including racing, breeding, competition and leisure horses. Our degree reflects this variety but leaves plenty of scope for students to be able to specialise in their favourite areas. Offering free BHS training in our own Equestrian Centre, approved up to Stage 4 and Intermediate Teaching exams, allows students to further boost CV’s and increase employability. Finally, our rehabilitation centre grants students the opportunity to engage with commercial clients and high level performance horses with the Centre Coordinator at the helm.
Winning second prize for my research poster at the UFAW conference felt really great! I felt like all of the hard work that I had put into my dissertation and designing the poster had paid off – and it felt even better knowing that I was representing BMC! I chose to study the Equine Performance Science Degree because the modules were exactly what I wanted to study, and I knew that the tutors were amazing and their teaching can’t be faulted. I also chose BMC because I love the friendly atmosphere here. I have definitely enjoyed the rural environment here at BMC; it may not be as big as other universities but I find that the environment is much friendlier. The class sizes are also smaller, which means that students get a lot more one-on-one teaching and assistance with work. If there are students out there looking to study Equine Performance Science, I definitely think that they should consider BMC! If you are looking for high quality lecturing and a friendly environment with very dedicated students and staff, then BMC is the place for you!’
