1. Neutral palate. Ensure finishes and fittings are from a neutral palate, classic in design and durable. Save your designer style for soft furnishings and artwork. This will allow you to adapt your home to changing tastes and trends.

2. Adaptable spaces. Look for an adaptable layout such as indoor-outdoor rooms or areas that can be subdivided by sliding screens or doors, this allows for spaces to adapt to family needs. 3. Ventilation. With the right orientation, and through the use of well placed windows and doors on either side of a house, cross ventilation will cool a house more efficiently in the warmer months and ensure your house is well ventilated. 4. Storage. A home without enough storage can soon feel claustrophobic, and suffocating.

5. Room to live. The size of a room can change the feeling of any home and in the end small rooms will take a toll on how your space makes you feel.
