Our hope for Femme is to help women feel empowered enough to make their own decisions and not to let a male dominated activity or work environment ever stop them from striving for success. We earnestly strive to show the world how many women have become successful, despite the odds. Women are often underestimated due to the stereotypical view of the gender. Even after years of fighting to be equal, we are still sold short. Lucretia Mott and Elizabeth Stanton wrote the Declaration of Sentiments, which is the parallel to the Declaration of Independence. In this they said, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men and women are created equal. - Jody Phillips, Contributor

DIY|Decorative Pillows by Adrienne Kidwell (Tampa) As a “DIY-er”, I always want the expensive things in life but I would rather make it myself than pay the hefty retail price. Some of the most outrageously expensive decorative items are throw pillows. Fancy pillows can be purchased anywhere from $60-$200. But in this easy tutorial, you can make your own for about 5 or 10 dollars. Step 1: You will need the following: - About ¾ yard of fabric (depending on how large your pillow is) - 1/4 yard of a different pattern - Scissors - Tracing pen or pencil - Exacto knife - Stencil - Sowing machine - Thread Step 2: - Trace you letter or shape onto your fabric and cut it out. - You’ll need a rubber mat or wooden surface to cut on with your exacto knife. - For the best results, cut slowly and carefully for the most precision.
DIY|Decorative Pillows Step3: - Fold your fabric in half and cut straight, equal sides (using your exacto knife)to fit the measurements that you want your pillow to be. - You should end up with two equal rectangles of squares. Step 4: - Pin your shape to the exact center of one side of the fabric square and use your sewing machine or hand sew) to secure it to the fabric. Step 5: - Stack your two pieces of fabric with the pattern side facing each other and the corners match up. - Your pillow should look inside out. - Continue to sow the perimeter leaving a ½ centimeter border. -Do not close the perimeter. Leave about 4 or 5 inches at the end in order to fill the pillow. Step 6: - Use Polifill or any other stuffing material to fill the interior of the pillow. - Make sure you fill in the corners and fill until firm. Step 7: - Hand sew the opening shut and secure it by knotting the thread. There you have it! You can use these steps to make any square pillow of any size. Stacking different patterns and colors give a really rich look to your bed or living room.

Sports|women in sports “ Not Everyone Likes to be Dominated
By jody phillips “There’s too much violence!” or “Women are built too weak to be able to handle this,” are two very common sayings among people who think women should really just stick to what we were “built” for—being the homemaker. There are sports that are directed towards the male population. Mostly because it is thought that women can’t handle them the same way men can. Here’s a little news flash: A lot of women these days don’t know how to cook, nor do they care. They also have high-powered careers that don’t involve them vacuuming or dusting. Women all around the world are getting involved in things that society deems “a mans doing.” In the words of Irving Berlin: Anything you can do I can do better; I can do anything better than you. One Small Step for Women, One Giant Kick for Courtney Cohen (PASCO) In the fall of 2007, Courtney Cohen be came the first girl player on the Gulf High School football team. Cohen has always been into sports. Whether it was watching the Steelers get a touchdown, watching the Pittsburg Penguins take home the Stanley Cup, or actively participating in soccer and cheerleading. Being an avid soccer player and cheerleader, it wasn’t unusual for her to want to participate in another sport. Her father, Phil Cohen, watched his daughter kick footballs and knew she had what it took to be on the team. So he took it upon himself to call Coach Fulmer and he had no issue with Cohen trying out. Cohen was a valuable player on the varsity soccer team, but her coach knew she could handle the physical contact. “I like to do things that will shock people. Going against the odds is something I’m really good at,” Cohen exclaimed with a confident smile.
fitness|and health How to Stay Slim and Fit This Holiday Season.
By Rhiannon Strayer So many of us out there have real people lives, which means that work and school tends to get in the way of some things. So, where is the time to get that rockin’ bod you’ve always dreamed of having? Yes, you could follow a workout and diet plan laid out for you by some personal trainer. Fitness|and health Easy Diet Plan: For a Girl on a Budget So many people think that dieting means cutting out all sugary sweet and fried foods, and only eating like a rabbit for two months straight. Truth is, dieting is all about calorie counting and working out. At first, it seems tedious, but as you get accustomed to keeping track of your daily calories you’ll become a natural pro at it. Keep in mind you can eat as many raw fruits and vegetables as you want without it affecting your weight. Breakfast: Healthy Breakfast Sandwhich: Smart bagel, laughing cow cheese, egg whites (or full egg if you desire). Oatmeal: Put dry Quaker Oats in a bowl, combine with 1 percent milk (or Vanilla Almond Milk. Only 90 calories for a cup), original Greek yogurt, and whatever fruit you desire. Add in a tablespoon of honey. Place in microwave, stir, and voila! Lunch: Homemade bean salad: Combine chick peas, black beans, and kidney beans in a bowl. Mix with two tablespoons of balsamic vinegar and a teaspoon or two of olive oil. Mini Zucchini Pizzas: Cut zucchini into circular pieces, sprinkle lightly with Olive Oil, salt, pepper, and cheese. Bake for five to ten minutes, or until zucchini starts to brown and cheese is melted. Dinner: Teriyaki Pork Chops: Get lean pork chops with little fat around the edges and a bottle of Teriyaki marinade. Poke holes, or cut slits into the chops and then either a day before, or the morning the day of, marinade pork chops until dinner time. Then all you have to do is put the chops, plus the marinade, in the oven to bake for about 45 minutes to an hour. Baked Chicken Breast: You will need three to four chicken breast, seasoned with Italian herb seasoning (from a packet). Slice red potatoes and fresh green beans and place around the pan. Then, just pop it in the oven and cook at 375 degrees for about an hour.
fitness|and health So many people think that desserts are bad and you should stay away from them, but this is not true. We crave things, especially as women, and keeping us away from sweets will definitely result in binge eating. That isn’t restricted to just sweets, the fact of the matter is that you can’t deprive yourself of anything you truly like. It’s all about portion sizes. Ever have an intense craving for ice cream? Instead of eating an entire pint of Ben and Jerry’s, opt for half a cup. Spoon it into a small bowl or cup, and put the container away. The same goes for candy. If you have a serious Snickers craving, then get the fun size packets. A fun size Snickers is only 70 calories, while a fun size Skittles is 60. You can certainly spare those calories each day. Really, it’s all mind over matter. Have a Snicker’s, or some ice cream, and when you’re done be sure to tell yourself that you are satisfied. Your body truly is satisfied; it’s your brain causing you to go for that second cup of ice cream, or open another wrapper. It’s about conditioning your brain to correspond with your body’s limits. For instance, pay attention to your stomach when you are eating. When you notice you are starting to feel full, then stop and put the plate away in the refrigerator. Then, when you get hungry a little later you are training your mind to follow your body’s eating patterns. Plus, when you eat the rest of your lunch or dinner, you don’t have to feel bad because you are ingesting the same amount of calories you were already prepared for. Which is much better than gobbling down dinner, then running to the kitchen two hours later and eating something else. Fruits and veggies are wonderful things to eat if you get a little hungry in between meals because they don’t pack on the weight. Another thing to keep in mind is never go back for seconds. Seconds will lead you to eat more, and what you need to begin to do is get your body used to eating the natural amount of food, rather than engorging itself with food it doesn’t need. Eating is fun. That’s the truth, and the reason why we make our food taste so good. We eat for entertainment purposes. If we ate solely for the sake of staying alive, we’d be eating beets from the ground. You just have to know the key elements to pleasure eating, and you can both entertain yourself while still keeping thin and trim.
Natural Calorie Burners: - Peanuts - Avocado - Edamame - Quinoa - Acai Berries Healthier Options: - Smart Balance Butter - 1 percent milk - Coconut milk - Sea Salt Nutritional Fact Everyone Should Be Aware Of We have all heard the hype over not eaten white starch foods, and to turn to wheat and all of our problems will be solved. People really don’t know how wrong they are. Wheat foods are actually worse for you, sticking to your body more than white starchs will, and are actually the leading cause of obesity over the past few years.
Fashion|Back to Black When In Doubt, Black It Out
By Brooke Huseby (Saint Petersburg) There was a time in my life where I cared about all things sartorial. I used to spend hours browsing Ann Mashburn, J. Crew, and Cloak & Dagger for the perfect piece to complete an outfit. But once I decided that art was going to be my future, I lost all of the time I used to spend shopping online because those hours are now put towards art. Even though I don’t have the time to coordinate outfits like I used to, I still get complimented on what I’m wearing just about every time I go somewhere. It was done very simply; I simplified my wardrobe. Don’t think that I’ve fallen into the trap that many artists fall into. The ‘I dress in all black to convey a certain image of depth and mystery’ trap. It is absolutely not the case. By geading towads black, I took my wardrobe in a minimalist direction. “Black is modest and arrogant at the same time. Black is lazy and easy - but mysterious. But above all black says this: “I don’t bother you - don’t bother me”.” - Yohji Yamamoto Black always looks clean. Black is timeless. For some, black is slimming. In all honesty, you can get away with wearing all black and not be looked at funny. If you’re wearing odd pairings, then people might question your decisions. Although I have curbed my matching/trend addiction, I haven’t stopped shopping for new pieces. However, I’ve learned that if you have a few black staples, you’ll find that getting dressed in the morning is a whole lot easier. Because even if you don’t go all black, it matches everything. So, in order to assist anyone who may be experiencing struggle, I’ve prepared a guide.

- Black denim is a great staple in your wardrobe because it’s quite possibly the most versatile piece. - It’s easy to dress up your denim with something simple like a sheer blouse, or a peplum top. If you slip on a pair of heels, you’re totally set to go out and paint the town red (or black, in this case). - Denim is also one of the most casual piece in anyone’s wardrobe. Throw a t-shirt and a pair of wedge sneakers on, grab your bag, and head out the door. You’ll never be late getting ready to impress the cute guy in your Art History class. He’ll be impressed with your effortless look, guaranteed.
- The maxi skirt is one of my personal favorite parts of my wardrobe. - Similar to black denim, the black maxi skirt is extremely versatile, and can be worn for various occastions/situations. - They come in various styles: sheer, halfsheer, double slit, single slit, solid, jersey, etc. - I enjoy wearing my maxi skirts like it is pictured. The look is extremely uncomplicated; the skirt, boots, and a crop top. - Note: If you’re short, a high-low skirt may suffice.
- Every girl should hav dress, because it’s one (and completely neces wardrobe.

- As nice as it is to wear a pea coat or parka, there’s nothing quite like wearing a leather jacket. Any girl can probably vouche for the fact that they make you feel (at least ever so slightly) edgy.
- Black tops are wearable at any time of day. Whether you’re going to sleep, going to class, going to run errands - anytime.
- Although leather jackets are less formal, and more suitable for trecking through the cold weather, ever so rarely have I ever met someone who needs to be dressed formally at all times. - Leather jackets can be somewhat pricey, so if it’s out of your price level, a faux-leather jacket will definitely suffice.
- They can be worn underneath sheer garments, sweaters, jackets, you name it. - Odds are, you have one or more in your closet. So, why not take advantage of the items that you already have? - Odds are, I have about fifteen in my closet. - You can find them anywhere, from Target to Barney’s New York to Topshop.
- Note: In cold weather, add a sweater.
Politics|taking a stand women who aren’t afraid to hold back
By Kenza Kamal Speak Up or Be Let Down (WASHINGTON DC) The world needs good listeners. The business world makes and breaks individuals every day, and only the strong survive. Women often build that skill at the expense of speaking up. Women have a tendency to think, “I already know what I think. I want to hear what others are thinking,” or, “I’ll do the group a favor and be quiet so we can wrap this meeting sooner.” Speaking up in meetings is not just about adding a new perspective. It is about letting the group know that you have a value to add. You should approach every interaction, meeting, or social gathering with the intent of demonstrating your worth. Emilia Johnson of the Harvard Business Review blog wrote, “Unless women speak up — and I don’t mean just talk, but get fluent in and remain fluent in a domain of expertise, whether finance, technology, science, fashion, construction, law — the whole idea that women can bring something extra to the table and be game changers won’t happen.” This implies for school, business, and other activities. Women prefer minimalism with our voice at the wrong time. We speak out when not wanted, and do not when needed. We blame nature. POLITICS CHECK AND MATE (WISCONSIN) Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin, who on Tuesday was elected Wisconsin’s first female senator and the first openly gay candidate elected to the Senate, deserving hero of the year! After Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson offered to explain the federal budget to her saying, “Hopefully I can sit down and lay out for her my best understanding of the federal budget because they’re simply the facts,” Baldwin made it clear she did not need any help with math.
Baldwin told the Huffington Post, “I was a dou ble major in college in mathematics and political science, and I served for six years on the House Budget Committee in my first six years in the House. And I am very confident that when proposals come before the U.S. Senate, I will be able to evaluate them as to how they benefit or harm middle-class Wisconsinites.” Thanks but no thanks Senator Johnson. Baldwin’s got this covered!

CONGENIALITY FOR CONGRESS
(HONOLULU) On Veteran’s Day, we honor all of America’s veterans for their willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good. At Hello Ladies, we want to honor two veterans in particular, Lieutenant Colonel Tammy Duckworth and Captain Tulsi Gabbard. Eight years ago tomorrow, the Black Hawk helicopter Tammy Duckworth was flying in Iraq was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade. Duckworth was severely injured, losing both of her legs and partial use of her right arm. During and after her recovery, Duckworth became an advocate for wounded soldiers, continuing to serve as a Major in the National Guard. Obama appointed her Assistant Secretary of Veterans Affairs. She also served as Director of Illinois’ Department of Veterans’ Affairs. She ran for Congress in 2006 but was defeated. However, last Tuesday, Duckworth defeated Representative Joe Walsh and was elected to Congress to represent Illinois’ eighth district. Tulsi Gabbard became the youngest person ever elected to the Hawaii State Legislature. The following year she joined the Hawaii National Guard, she voluntarily deployed to Iraq. Gabbard served for 12 months near Baghdad and was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal. She deployed again, this time as a Military Police platoon leader charged with training the Kuwait National Guard’s Counter-Terrorism unit. Gabbard became Congresswoman-elect for Hawaii’s second congressional district. She will be the first Hindu in Congress. Thank you for your service ladies!

Art|Limitless A personal tribute to Marina Abramović
By Brooke Huseby For the past year or so, I’ve been ridiculously inspired with my art. For that, I would like to thank Marina Abramović, an artist that I truly believe is limitless. I’ve spent hours on end watching her performances, reading about her, looking at photos of her - she is completely incredible. Abramović has far surpassed any female performance artist - or dare I even say artist, in general - in the past forty years, and at 65 year old, she is everything that I aspire to be, and more.
Marina Abramović was born in 1946 in Belgrade, Yugoslavia. She is, without a doubt, one of the seminal artists of our time. She began her career in Yugoslavia in the early 1970’s and attended the Academy of Fine Arts. Once she graduated, she began to teach which is when her whole career as a performance artist truly took flight. She did a series of work, the ‘Rhythm’ series, where she deliberately did things that tested her own personal limits. For example, in Rhythm 0 (1974), she wanted to test the limits of the relationship between performer and audience. She assigned a passive role to herself, with the public being the force which would act on her. Abramović had placed upon a table 72 objects that people were allowed to use (a sign informed them) in any way that they chose. Some of these were objects that could give pleasure, while others could be wielded to inflict pain, or to harm her.
In 1976, Abramović met a man who went by the name of Ulay, and they developed one of the strongest, most beautiful partnerships I’ve ever seen. Abramović and Ulay began a collaboration, and in their main concepts they explored were the ego and artistic identity. They ended their relationship by walking the Great Wall of China, and saying goodbye when they met in the middle. She did not see him again until she did the piece, The Artist is Present, in the MoMa.
Abramović has always used the body as both her subject and medium. She actually utilizes herself as a whole, which is something that many artists do not even consider. With that, she has explored the physical and mental limits of her own being, she’s withstood pain, exhaustion, and danger in the quest for her own personal emotional transformation. Her concern is typically with adding to her body of work that ritualizes simple actions of everyday life (i.e. lying, sitting, dreaming, thinking, standing). With that, she’s manifested an extremely interesting mental state. Abramović is considered to be the grandmother of performance art, and she has to this day created some of the most historic pieces and is ultimately the only performance artist of this day and age that is still making significant durational works. Her dedication to her craft, and lack of limits is exactly what I someday hope to display in my artwork, which is why she serves as such a personal inspiration to me.
Music|Local Local Music In The Tampa Bay
By Adrienne Kidwell (Tampa) College students these days are obsessed with music. We’re down loading it. We’re mixing it and we can share with just a few clicks of a button. Everyone wants to be “that person” in his or her group of friends that discovers that new cool band that will become everyone’s new favorite. The more obscure the group and the more unique the sound, the more cool points we will get amongst our piers. These students spend so much time listening to Pandora, internet radio and websites trying to find that sound. But little do they know what we have right under our nose here in Tampa. If you travel over to the St. Petersburg area you will find bands like Goodnight Neverland, that regularly play in the little corner bars there. Their sound is so unique and the quality of the vocals blend seamlessly on the record. The lyrics will take you on a journey to that place inside yourself that you don’t share with your loved ones. It exposes that place of self reflection and pain that you dwell in as you fall asleep at night; to that place where you think deeper about your purpose and about humanity. Over on the other side of town you can find some of the greatness that is the New Grenada artists. Alexander and the Grapes, Sleepy Vikings, The Pals, and King of Spain are just a few of the artists New Grenada promotes. Alexander’s sound is both fun and eerie at the same time. His songs explore spirituality from a different perspective. They display the belief in God as something personal and distinctive.Just as you begin to ponder afterlife and theology, it brings you back and sheds light on how those thoughts are important with the smaller things in life like relationships and love. These bands play at places like New World Brewery, the Orpheum, Crowbar and other bar venues.
There is constantly new music to be found locally. If you can’t make it out to downtown to a live show, you can hear it on WMNF radio. 88.5 has morning and afternoon programs where they highlight local artists. The hosts announce what local shows are going on that week and even have guest bands come in and play live tunes. If you want to be that person in your group that always has great music no one has ever heard about, I definitely encourage you to explore WMNF and the Tampa/St. Pete music scene. You never know what greatness is right in your back yard.
Film|Une Femme Est une Femme A look at Jean Luc Godard’s Film, ‘A Woman is A Woman’
By Brooke Huseby
French director Jean-Luc Godard’s 1961 film, A Woman is A Woman (Une femme est une femme), as well as Breathless, are luckily of the director’s more accessible works. Foreign cinema isn’t exactly the most popular thing in America, and I still to this day, cannot fathom why. This film in particular is extremely witty, playful, yet incredibly deep. This is a trait that several of Godard’s films possess. Without being heavy-handed, A Woman is a Woman defies genre-placement. This subversive musical (yes, it is somewhat of a musical) celebrates female empowerment and takes sly jabs at Hollywood film conventions. Godard’s use of music is at its best here, not to be rivaled until the impeccable, spellbinding soundscape of Alphaville (which ultimately came years later). Godard pokes fun at film tropes such as the inconsequential supporting players when two detectives inexplicably invade the home of Angela (Anna Karina) and her boyfriend Emile (JanClause Brialy). For those who are unfamiliar with any foreign cinema, Anna Karina is sort of like a French version of Audrey Hepburn. The film possesses several bizarre (yet comical) underpinnings that are heightened by Emile’s need to ride around his apartment on a bicycle. When he refuses to impregnate her, Anna turns to Alfred (Jean-Paul Belmondo) to do the job. There is even a point where Angela and Emile are in bed together, and she is so angry at him, that she deliberately drags a lamp across their apartment to go get a book off of the bookshelf to try and insult him. They take turns doing so, and
eventually fall asleep. Godard certainly loves women, a whole lot, but has never really understood them. You wouldn’t know this through watching A Woman is A Woman, which is where his brilliance continues to come into play. The emotional turmoil that Angela experiences through the film is flatteringly complimented by Godard’s formal, yet airy compositions. Angela may be stubborn and irrational but she’s completely hellbent on self-actualization.
Film|Une Femme est une femme
Godard’s pastiche is self-consciously tongue-in-cheek, riddled with constant references to other films: Truffaut’s Shoot the Piano Player is mentioned during a game of charades and one character asks “how Jules and Jim is progressing.” Godard’s especially potent reference to Breathless is an act of self-love. A Woman is a Woman, in the end, is less a film about the perils of romantic love as it is an act of love for the creation of film. I would personally recommend this film to anyone who is interested in intellectual cinema, as opposed to mindless cinema. If you have a large enough attention span to read and comprehend subtitles, enjoy wit/intelligent humor, and/ or enjoy the style of films shot in the 1950-1960’s, then you would without a doubt enjoy this film.
Relationships|dualities the two sides of relationships
By Samantha Hsu and Adrienne Kidwell Above The Abuse It doesn’t matter if he’s throwing a shoe at you, throwing you into the wall, throwing his fists at you, or telling you, you’re not good enough; he is abusing you. There comes a time in unhealthy relationships where enough is enough and ties need to be cut for the well being of the abused. As abusive relationships snowball into more serious relationships, they only become more dangerous because the abuser becomes stronger as the abused becomes weaker. Abuse comes from a need to control, fear of abandonment, lack of trust and love, a learned behavior and lack of knowledge to move towards resolution in a positive way. Studies show that most abusive relationships start out with verbal abuse. Slowly over time the abused loses self confidence, self-esteem, their identity, and self respect as the abuse worsens and the abuser becomes stronger. Some abusive relationships stop here with emotional abuse, which can be just as damaging, if not more, than physical abuse. For the emotionally abusive relationships that turn physical, the results can be catastrophic. So often when women find themselves in an abusive relationship their first instinct is to blame themselves because the abuser has held them at fault for so long it’s only second nature to do so.
No woman deserves to feel she is not good enough to be treated the way she deserves. Once a woman has lost her self-worth and self-respect, it’s easy for an abuser to gain even more power because the victim is putting herself down for the abuser. Abusive relationships need professional help and a dedicated participation from the people involved to make the change. If both partners do the work – the freedom from pain, the true feeling of being loved and loving another human being are only a part of the rewards It takes a responsibility and respect of your self to break the pattern and learn new ways to be. If your partner is not willing to be apart of it seek help on your own to develop a course of action; above the abuse is where you want to be. - Samantha Hsu
Relationships|Dualities How to Have a Healthy Relationship Relationships for young college students are usually complicated. We girls enter in and out of relationships trying to find the love that we’ve grown up seeing in movies. We are all looking for the Corey to our Topanga: an extraordinary love and someone to grow old with. But we girls make it so much harder than it has to be. There are a few things we can do to make sure our relationship is healthy and that we are on our way to a longer lasting love. I have been dating my boyfriend, Ryan, for 5 years and these tips have always gotten us through. The first thing is always going to be honesty. Now I’m not just talking about honesty about fidelity and money; I’m talking about being honesty about what you need and how you feel. When I asked Ryan what he felt has kept us together so long, he said, “We have always been real with each other.” Whenever we felt hurt or if there was something on our minds, we always sat down and, without raising our voice, said our peace. If you keep things inside and don’t express them to the other person in the relationship, nothing will ever get fixed and you will grow resentful of your significant other. This brings me to my second tip; compromise. You know that you love someone when, instead of having your own way all the time, you think of their feelings first. Small sacrifices and compromises in a relationship really show how much you care for the other person and it makes them want to do more to make you happy. Another thing to keep in mind is that things aren’t always going to be perfect. You both are going to make mistakes; small ones are nearly life changing ones. Little things are going to get on your nerves and sometimes you will be annoyed with them for no reason at all. The difference between being in love and being infatuated with someone is a choice. When you are infatuated with someone it is all about you. It’s all about how they make you feel and what this relationship does for you. Love is a choice. It’s choosing even when you don’t feel happy or when you don’t feel a rush of love for the other person, you still love them and your choice to love them means more than how you temporarily feel. So many times I have felt unappreciated or neglected by my boyfriend. I have felt unhappy and, at times, thought that maybe I could be happier with someone else. But I have chosen to love him. I have made mistakes and so has he, but we are honest with each other about what we need and how we feel. We love each other and have made the choice to do anything, even making sacrifices, to make our relationship work. Having a healthy relationship is not what you see in movies. It is definitely not always easy. It is a lot of give and take. But if you are willing to be honest and compromise, it makes it so much easier to be happy and enjoy each other and it makes it much more difficult for things to come between you. - Adrienne Kidwell

It means so much to me that everyone showed up.”
Women|Around the World What about the others?

WHAT ABOUT THE OTHERS? TO BE BORN IN HOSTILE ENVIRONMENTS AND FEAR FOR YOUR LIFE.
Women|around the world
(MIDDLE EAST) A common crisis for women in the western hemisphere ranges from getting dressed to the endless choices for dinner. With petty problems distracting our naive minds, we disregard the tragic environments women deal with over seas. Targeted violence against females, dismal healthcare, and desperate poverty make Afghanistan the world’s most dangerous country in which to be born a woman. With Congo a close second due to horrific levels of rape. Pakistan, India and Somalia ranked third, fourth and fifth. To live in fear of such terrifying environments, women deal with threats ranging from domestic abuse and economic discrimination to female feticide, genital mutilation and acid attack. Afghanistan is at the top of the list of the most dangerous places in the world for women. The risks consisted of health threats, sexual violence, non-sexual violence, cultural or religious factors, lack of access to resources and trafficking. However, there is very little to be done for those helpless women and their families. A reminder to all is to be grateful and pray for those we can only keep in spirit. We have a lot to admire and appreciate because of where we are born.

(JEDDAH) Reem Assad is one of the first female investment analysts in the country of Saudi Arabia. With over eight years of experience in investment management, she decided to spread her voice for the private matter. In 2008, she took initiative in eliminating the law of male staff from the female intimate clothing sector. “The contradiction is in the fact that we are supposedly the most conservative nation in the world and yet women here are required to buy undergarments from shops manned by men.” – Assad Could you imagine shopping for your intimates: bra, panties, or lingerie and a man assisting you? Unless that man was not homosexual, I would not be comfortable. Assad’s initiative started with a group on Facebook with only two active members. This quickly grew to 6,000 members. In 2009, she called for a two-week boycott of all lingerie stores. To bring into force the directive of the then Minister of Labor Dr. Ghazi Al-Gosaibi that only women be employed in lingerie shops. This directive was supposed to be effective in 2006, but still not implemented. “Social media should be thanked for resolving so many of the issues we face today because; it spreads everywhere and cannot be ignored” – Assad. The Royal Decree that directs that only women can work in shops selling intimate clothing items means that 44,000 Saudi women will have jobs. Instead of staying at home and living on whatever their husbands or fathers can offer, women can work and make her money. Through this initiative, we have turned passive members of society into active contributors and we have given them the independence they need in a soaring economy. After four years of writing, speaking and working on this issue, the directive has finally enforced. She hoped and worked for her expectations to bring economic balance, gives opportunities to those who need them and provides women with the protection of their modesty that they deserve. Remember, every voice counts. Women are equal, and unless her voice speaks up then it cannot be heard. It takes time and persistence to object the undefined. Follow your heart and stand for what you believe, before turning to the man.
