Creative Brief CLIENT:

The World Is Fun is a not-for-profit organization. Based in Seattle, TWIF runs fun, social events that don’t seem like volunteer work. From Beard & Stache Fest, to Stitch N Bitch, to Iron Chef Cook Offs, to Treehouse Wearhouse for Kids, TWIF offers a variety of events that are less like work and more like fun. We are The World is Fun! You can call us TWIF. Our mission is to be the catalyst to connect volunteers, corporations and charities in need and we are here to do things a little differently. The World is Fun is 100% volunteer run. We support Seattle by connecting volunteers, local businesses, and Seattle nonprofits to create a mutually beneficial community for everyone involved. In other words – we can’t do this without your help! There are about a million ways to help TWIF - from volunteering to donating to simply tweeting – but we don’t have room to list all one million, so here are a few. (When you come up with one of the 999,980 ways to help that isn’t on this page – contact us! We’re always open to new and creative ways to get involved with our community!)

PROBLEM:

TWIF holds the annual Beard & Stache Fest and is hoping to bring in more people to the final event of the Festival. For three years, the audience for the crowning final event has been mostly contestants and a few friends. Since this event will help create awareness for TWIF, as it is one of their bigger events, it would be best to bring in more people who could donate time or monetarily.

OPPORTUNITY:

By promoting the event more in advance and narrowing down the age group to really get to target audiences, TWIF has the opportunity to gather a much larger audience for their fourth year. By offering give-aways and prizes to audience can help bring in more people as well as more money via donations for the event.

SOLUTION:

TWIF will increase promotional pieces with a fun and trendy style. The mustache trend has been growing for the past few years, and by incorporating it in a new and unique way, TWIF can get more attention. The whole event is really promoting fun to a more “hipster” style group. Promotional pieces may include posters for selected event areas, direct mail to previous entrants, give-aways for donations, etc. Final event invites will offer an early arrival incentive by giving away a gift package to the first X amount of people who enter. These solutions will potentially garner more attendants to the event as well as more donations for the non-profit.

APPROPRIATION: Letterpress Movement Movable type printing invented by Johannes Gutenberg in 1440. Letter stamps are placed in a tray, ink is rolled over stamps, and paper is pressed over inked stamps. From the 15th century to today, letterpress has been used extensively, in newspapers and books, and has had a recent “revival” stylistically due to it’s old-fashioned, hands-on, personal nature. I’m interested in appropriating from the Wild West, Wanted poster style that was created after letterpress was invented.

press release Beard And Stache Fest Raises Awareness For Foster Kids The World Is Fun raised $11,415 for Treehouse foster kids through annual event (Seattle, WA) April 9, 2013 – At a gala to celebrate the end of the 5th Annual Beard and Stache Festival, Seattle non-profits The World Is Fun (TWIF) and Treehouse thanked the community and a number of local sponsors raised $11,415 to make a total of more than $38,000 to date. The Beard and Stache Festival is the flagship fundraising event for TWIF and is a month-long series of events hosted by Seattle area restaurants and bars. Donations were collected as event guests voted for their favorite of 135 contestants, the likes of which included two beard and mustache world champions. In addition to celebrating a successful fundraising and awareness event, TWIF also crowned the winners of the bearcd and stache competition. J. P. Dand took home first place honors, followed by Mark Fussell in second place and Howard Carson in third. Team C.O.B.A.L.T. from Pies & Pints claimed the team prize. Although this year’s rendition of Beard and Stache Fest is over, plan on seeing the relationship between these two organizations continue to grow. “TWIF came to me five years ago with the cool idea of using facial hair to raise money and awareness for foster care kids, and they have nurtured Beard and Stache Fest since then,” said Jessica Ross, Director of Development at Treehouse. “We are lucky to be a part of the event and partners with TWIF.”

No other agency in our region responds to the needs of our foster children like Treehouse. Treehouse was founded to help foster kids just be kids. Since 1988, Treehouse has filled the gaps for kids in foster care, providing services that no other agency addresses: money for extra-curricular activities and summer camp, professional educational support services, resources to fully participate in the everyday activities of growing up, clothing, and supplies to help them fit in at school.
