MEMORIAL OF THREE RESISTANCE MOVEMENTS

Project: Memorial of three resistance movements Location:

Lošany, Czech Republic

Year: 6th year winter term master thesis Supervisor:

Klára Hradečná Tomáš Hradečný

Assignment:

The subject of my thesis is the refurbishment of a farm which represents a family which has been involved in three resistance move ments. The new space presents the history to young adults and the public with dignity and respect.

The proposal to restore the farm as a place of memory for the Preservation of a deeper understanding and recollection of the events of the 20th century as played out in the Czech & Czechoslovak lands are the subject of my diploma thesis. Property ownership and the long history associated with its owners is a topic of discussion that has been and still remains controversial. I personally perceive modern history as an unabashed subject. The inner political situation after World War I and the ruling regimes, which were in the territory of today’s Czech Republic and Slovakia significantly affected the daily life in society. For us the young generation, knowledge of the events of this history will help to give an understanding of the context of our present conditions. The Mašín family represents those who did not give in to any of the despotic regimes The House of the Mašíin family is perceived as a memorial place for the changes taking place in the country during the First and Second World Wars and the subsequent period of Communism

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ZDIBY

Project:

Elementary School Zdiby

Location:

Zdiby, Czech Republic

Year: 5th year summer term student competition Supervisor:

Klára Hradečná Tomáš Hradečný

Assignment: A new building of elementary school for 6th to 9 th grade students/ middle school Zdiby, in context, a small village north of Prague, has doubled its population over last couple years. The local school is no longer suitable, so the local mayor decided to ask the students of architecture at CTU, Prague to propose an extension for the school, adding 10 classrooms and a gym. The site for new school is limited in size and the terrain sloped. The sloping terrain became crucial for my design. The south part of building, on the upper end, is one storey and towards the northern part is of two storeys. This way the scale of building becomes more suited to its surroundings. As well, three north facing wings of the new structure are breaking the building volume into a more sensitive intervention into the surrounding countryside. Two courtyards are oriented into current school area and are easily accessible from locker room. Second courtyard has an outdoor amphitheatre and might be used also after school hours as an outdoor cinema. The gymnasium is designed to be used after school by the Public or local residents. Thus the new school is ready to be a part, not only of the student life but to people of Zdiby as well. Project won the first prize in student competition.

LETNA PLAIN

Project:

Masterplan of Letna plain

Co-author:

Location:

Year:

Supervisor:

Klára Hradečná Tomáš Hradečný

Assignment: Urban developement of Letná masterplan Area of Letná plain belongs to important and favorite Prague spots. Proximity to centre, filled with greenery and civic amenities makes it very popular among locals. Seemingly perfect place faces many challenges. Unsufficient urban planning threatens it’s extraordinary genius loci. Purpose of this project is not to cover another part of Prague in buildings, but to identify and strengthen qualities and address problems. To truly highlight the size of plain it is necessary to clearly define its boudaries. Therefore we propose for a line of buildings to be contructed at its nothern edge and also at the place of existing stadium. This way Hradčany and Dejvice are connected to Letná by more urban space with clearly defined park and street. Letna plain and other Prague places were in the past often filled with influentian architectural objects like Oragery in the Prague castle gardens, Belveder, Hanvský-pavilio or EXPO 58 building. For this reason it is just natural to place a new cultural centre in this important location. We propose for one to be constructed at the place of existing football stadium and another one at the heart of the park so its visible both from north street and down from the riverside. Next we place smaller object in the park on view axis from the newly defined street.

Supervisor: Mona El Khafif Jason Halter Rick Andrighetti Delnaz Yekrangian Christos Marcopoulos Assignment:

Hyper density-hybrid architecture

Typology of perimeter block has a specific character as every architectural typology. Perimeter block clearly sets the street boundaries and has clear urban conditions. The courtyard thus can have its own character distinct from the busy street. In my study of perimeter block typology I have discovered that there are several important approaches when designing dense urban blocks. First of all building needs to have an active ground level in order to provide good urban life. This was also investigated during phase of urban mapping when one of the observation where publicly accessible ´doors“. All amenities cafes and restaurants are important for vibrant urban life. Courtyard is also a place of passage. By creating block which dimensions were 90m x 135m it was necessary to enable pass across such a large area. Therefore I have created paths trough the site to bring people inside of the building and pass the market, which is nowadays again becoming an important place for meeting and discovering or even self branding. Passage above was created to maximize connection of public and building itself. Elevated courtyard brings people up to second level of restaurants cafes and galleries and is another space forgathering which is also very important aspect of courtyards. High density requirements led me to experiment with shape of perimeter block. Mass of the block needed to be broken so the building would more react on surrounding area. High points of the massing are rising across the site towards already higher structures of surrounding blocks. On the bottom commercial base is placed layer of office spaces, co-working and digital fabrication workshops. On the top are placed residential blocks as if they were just mid rise high density residences. Having six smaller housing blocks breaks the mass and brings the scale of the building down.

A CHAIR FOR HENRY MOORE

Project:

A Chair fot Henry Moore

Co-author:

Amal Dirie

Year:

4th year winter term- international studies -University of Waterloo, School of Architecture,Canada

Supervisor:

Elizabeth English

Assignment: Structural Design Build Workshop, which focuses on the design, construction and structural analysis of a folding or take-apart wooden chair for a specific “client of the student’s choice. The project allows the student to explore the nature and process of designing a structure that is at once stable under changing load conditions and capable of reconfiguration. Manifesto Imagine the world from the view of the others. Mother as a child; Child as a mother. Art is viewed at many angles, not an obstacle to confuse the mind But rather made in hopes of finding a source of content. A place for contemplation and remembrance, Fostering intimate kindred ties Through reliance and necessity Let`s not look at things of everyday life as a challenge. Let it serve the purpose of its intended design Its a perfect balance, a composition of elements Where solid meets void and positive meets negative, Its not overly extravagant, but its simplicity provides wonders A chair for a Mother - that moves with gentle ease While the chair for a child provides a slight sense of hierarchy Transformable, suitable for both figures Ageless in time, from one generation to the next.

Project was selected for exhibition Come Up to My Room 2016, which is part of Toronto Design Off site Festival.

WORKSHOP: FRUIT DRYER

Wendy Anne Frömmelová, Broňa Priehodová, Jakub Volentič, lukás Houser and others... Construction of fruit dryer was initiated by citizens of Koněprusy.there is plenty of orchards and thus delicious fruit and forests full of mushrooms. We are glad we could help to...their idea. In our design we tried to deal with autumn rainy weather. The experiment combines power of the sun and fire. Dryer itself consist of several parts. Pedestal out of bricks which serves as fireplace upon which is sheet-metal with the layer of gravel cumulating the heat. The smoke is lead away trough the chimney on the side of the dryer. There is the main body set on the pedestal which is made of wood. There are 8 drawers with net bottom where the fruit and mushrooms can be spread and dried. Four holes in the wooden body in the lower part and another four on the top assure the air circulation and thus effective drying. We hope all will work just fine and people in Koněprusy could enjoy all the possibilities their community center provides.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL BACHELOR PROJECT

Project:

Komenský square

Location: Komenský square, Říčany, Czech Republic Year: 3rd year 2013/2014 Supervisor: doc Ing. arch. Michal Kohout Ing. arch. David Tichý Assignment: Urban design of the square which brings right function of new structures and to bring a spirit of urbanized area into rather chaotic place. Concept: Říčany is a small town 20 km south east from Prague. There is great accessibility of capital city. The down town is considered to be Masaryk square which is in the middle of Říčany, however at the beginning of 20th century the town started to expand rapidly. The site of the studio took a challenge of designing Komenský square which is situated in the middle of residential area from mid fifties. This area recently does not remind a square at all. The area suffers of incongruity. Urban design defines Komenský sqare. The new buildings fulfill demands of residents of this area. As a result we designed new elementary school, small administrative centre and residential houses of different character. Concept as a whole holds together, brings new possibilities and necessities to this perspective area. Housing is divided into two categories. First are split level bock of flats. And the second one are attached houses suitable for family housing. Public buildings as a school or ‘entrepreneur incubator’ brings new job opportunities. Composition of urban design cooperates with existing buildings. New school is right in front of High school on the other side of Komenského square and links this important institutions. The structure of incubator encloses the open square and thus we can consider Komenský square to be defined. Residential houses are indicators of change between dense buildup area of square and lose residential houses parcels. School as an educational institution takes it´s important place at a new forming square. The U shape of plans enables to create inner courtyard which is safe for young children. The new school is reserved for children of 1st to 5th grade thus from age 6 to 10. This building is a new headquater of existing school and solves a capacity shortage of schools in Říčany. The area is also convenient for commuting. Location in the centre of the town is an ideal place for this necessary institution.

Center of Architecture

Location: Chotkova, Prague, Czech Republic Year: 2nd year/summer term, 2012/2013 Supervisor: Ing. arch. Luboš Pata Ing. arch. Martina Portyková Assignment: Design of Centre of architecture in the specific site of Prague Chotkova street. The task was to consider and create new headquarters of architecture exhibition. Concept: Chotkova street in the city centre is very frequented connection of down town and part of Prague Letná. Creation dates back to 15th century and thus its specific shape and surrounding was important in designing. Sloping area reflect mainly inside or the center into ramps. Design changes from the city part where the volumes are bigger and in direction to the park they become smaller and greenery becomes more dominant. At the end of the site is located the „gate“ to Jelení Příkop, park leading to the castle. Architecture makes our environment and centre of architecture drags more attention to the importance of architecture may create space for wide public as well as for community of architects. Centre of architecture is mainly a gallery with exhibition of modern architecture of the latest century and contemporary architecture providing not only interior spaces but also exterior area provides unique opportunity to attract people and give them reason to explore the mother of arts.
