Welcome to the Summer edition of the Family Grapevine. What a very cold and peculiar spring we have had, snow in May in some parts of the country!! Well finally the temperature has started to rise, we have the summer school holidays fast approaching us so if you’re looking for places to go, holiday clubs and more look no further, we are your local information directory providing all you need to know and more. We are lucky enough to be able to bring you three Fantastic Competitions; up for grabs are 2x Family Tickets to Hobbledown Mysterical Farm Park Adventure in Epsom, a 4 day Daily Summer Camp with Day Camp Activity Centre in Downe for 8 to 15 year olds and a Family Ticket to see Treasure Island, the swashbuckling family musical by the Cambridge touring theatre in Sevenoaks. As busy parents, spending quality time with our children is more important than ever. With summer just around the corner, simply getting out in the garden to plant some bulbs or pull up a few weeds together is time well spent. Although it’s always a chore to dispose of garden waste afterwards especially if it involves a trip to one of the waste sites and a long wait queuing. If you’re a Bromley borough resident, save some precious time and become a member of our popular Green Garden Waste Collection Scheme. Around 9,500 households across the Borough have already discovered this easy, convenient, collection service. As a member, for an annual fee of £60 you will receive a large 240-litre wheelie bin to hold all of your unwanted green garden waste.

Our dedicated waste services team will make regular scheduled visits to your home to collect all types of green garden waste, including grass cuttings, leaves, prunings and hedge trimmings. Members of the all-year-round service receive fortnightly collections from March to November, then monthly from December until February. All green garden waste is taken to a local facility where it is treated and turned into compost, and then used in local farms as a soil improver. Jo Jingles, the nationwide music, singing and movement classes for babies and pre-schoolers has been re – launched and new classes are running locally. Run by qualified class instructor Jo Youll, an Early Years professional and mum to 3 boys. The new classes will be available in a range of sessions for babies and preschool children up to the age of five. Parents, grandparents and carers are invited to attend the friendly, interactive sessions which are designed to be fun and informal. Jo Youll explains : “Having lived in this area my whole life, I’m excited to be bringing Jo Jingles classes to the community and into new areas where we haven’t been before.” New classes start in The Memorial Hall Petts Wood on Thursdays at 1.30pm. Bickley classes are at Bickley Park Cricket Club - Fridays at 1.30 and 2.05pm and Crystal Palace at Living Water Satisfies Café Mondays at 2pm. It was wonderful to be able to welcome primary school children from Bickley, Bromley, Raglan Primary, and St Mark’s Church of England schools to Bromley High for our 130th Anniversary Festival. We had stalls and sideshows from circus skills to farm shop produce to sponge the teacher, to the local fire brigade and community police officers and hundreds of parents and members of the wider school community here to enjoy the day. With fabulous music, story-telling and gymnastic displays by the Junior School girls to entertain us, we could not have wanted for more. Helping children with anger Anger is often seen as a “bad” emotion or a sign of bad behaviour, (perhaps especially in schools) this can lead to some unhelpful ways of dealing with this emotion. Many adults feel a need to “stamp out” anger with strong discipline and severe rebukes. This can escalate the emotions of all involved while increasing the young person’s view of themselves of a bad person. It is also intriguing that children are often sent to “anger management” groups, but not to sadness, depression or anxiety management. In my work with children, I have found that the key to helping the child or the young person with anger or anxiety is to get to the root of where this emotion is coming from; the approaches described above don’t address why the young person is angry. One of the most important points here is that it is ok, and often appropriate to be angry. If a child is angry with someone trying to bully them, or a friend might give them the drive to be assertive and stop this happening. If someone in your family is ill, or dies, or your parent is not emotionally accessible because they are ill, depressed, or spending lots of time visiting someone in hospital, then anger is a normal and reaction to this.

When a Counsellor might help

Often parents may be able to find out what is really bothering their child. These guidelines might help

Difficult emotions often settle with time, but if the difficulty is continuing, or worsening, it may be helpful to look for a counsellor to work with your child on the difficulty, and to advise you. It can be hard to find out why your own child is angry; when one person is angry, emotions often run higher in the family. High emotions make it harder to talk without someone reacting strongly and harder for everyone to see exactly what is happening. Anxiety needs careful handling, and it is more likely that your child would benefit from the help of a counsellor who is experienced in working with children and young people A counsellor can be helpful to the child, and for the whole family, as the child may feel they can talk more openly with an adult who is not part of the situation. The counsellor is trained to help the child feel comfortable to talk about what is bothering them, and has the knowledge to make links between their experiences, emotions and behaviour. They will then be able to work with the child to recognise when these emotions are triggered, and to give them strategies to manage their feelings more effectively. Counsellors work in different ways, but I find that children can work very effectively through talking alone, but it is helpful to vary the work with techniques, such as “drawing and talking,” sand tray work, and other activities with a cognitive behavioural focus. I find some visualisation techniques are also very calming and effective at bringing down both anxiety and anger levels. It is important to find a fully qualified child counsellor. The British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (B.A.C.P) lists counsellors with a high level of training. Details of each counsellor establish which counsellors in your area are experienced with children. She has ten years of experience of working with children and young people, as a school counsellor and in private practice in Kent and Surrey.

• W hen they are angry, try to stay calm; other people’s high emotion will escalate the angry outburst • I f you can sense they may be getting angry, try to distract or divert immediately if possible, research has shown that stopping anger in the first few seconds is your best chance. • I f they are in the middle of an angry outburst, you are unlikely to be able to stop them, comfort them or reason with them, it is best to calmly state that you want to help them, and let them know that when they are calmer, you will be in the room next door, or similar.

How can parents help with anxiety? • If a child suffers from anxiety, it can be a particular worry for parents because it can mean that your child is finding it hard to face or manage areas of their life, and may be trying to avoid these. Guidelines which might help are; • T ry to be kind and calm; some parents get understandably frustrated and show they are angry; this can be very damaging as the child is already likely to feel embarrassed. • T ry to help them feel safe, reassured and give them the impression you can contain their emotion, if they can sense you are worried, they will take this as evidence that there is really something to worry about. • T ry to add practical support to help them do what they need to do; e.g. I will come to the school office with you, but then you need to go in, and then to withdraw support in small steps as things improve.

Chucklebox was established in 1990 and provides a welcoming and fun environment for children aged 4 – 11 years. We are open all year round from 8am - 6pm, offering a wide variety of sessions the minimum of which is 5 hours. Prices start at only £15.50, and sibling discounts are also available. There is the option of a payment plan and we accept childcare vouchers. We offer a wide range of activities suitable to the individual needs of the child including some of our popular activities, such as; cooking, multisport, treasure hunts, arts and crafts, trampoline, table games/ construction toys, bouncy castle, face painting, consoles and many more! Popular trips take place daily and these include horse riding, farm visits, cinema, Keston ponds, Quasar, Parks, swimming and more. We encourage early bookings to avoid disappointment. We have spacious and secure premises, a large gym for physical activities, an outside area consisting of playing fields and a play ground, a large kitchen which enables us to offer excellent daily cookery activities, a well equipped art room and a large activity games room. Younger children are well catered for and have their own separate play room, similar to a nursery.
