Newsletter Dear Parents/Carers I hope you all had an enjoyable half term. We had a large number of Year 11 students in over the holiday receiving top-up classes in Science and in other areas. My thanks go to the staff and the students for giving up their holiday time. Welcome to the first of our re-launched School Newsletter. I hope you will agree with me that the quality and presentation is much improved. It is our intention to issue fortnightly Newsletters to keep you updated with all the exciting developments and successes within the School. You can also keep in touch by using the website and becoming a follower of our Twitter feed @bromfordsschool. We are currently in the process of changing our school website and anticipate that the new site will be available from June. The new site will embrace many of the ideas and suggestions from our recent Parent Voice meetings. We are all pleased that the three quarters of a million pound refurbishment is almost complete and I think you will all agree that the external appearance of the school has been greatly improved by the new window walling. Richard Westergreen-Thorne continues to provide support to myself and the School through his role as Executive Headteacher. I am greatly enjoying working with Richard and drawing upon his experience to ensure we make the rapid progress required of the School.

In recognition of the inspirational work Summah Johnson continues to do she has been awarded The Bromfords School and Sixth Form College SEN Ambassadors’ Award. Some of her work includes mentoring younger

children and training staff on the best ways to support students with visual impairments. Summah who has a degenerative eye condition called Retinitis Pigmentosa has recently learnt braille and does daily cane training. Her

contribution to the school and the SEN Department is immeasurable, which is why she is a truly worthy winner of this award.

The National Enterprise Challenge Year 10 and 11 Business students of The Bromfords School and Sixth Form College have been taking part in the National Enterprise Challenge. Students studying Business and Economics were given the challenge of designing a new range of flipflops for the rapidly growing social enterprise Gandys Flipflops, and presented their new design to a panel of judges.

The winning group consisted of Year 10 students, Anu Faniyi, Elizabeth Fayehun, Mia Griffin, Frankie Stone, Kaylum Bennett and Chris Allen (photo attached). They designed the Ghandi ‘Animal’ flip flops that were inspired by the Indian Tsunami and sadly the death of the Ghandi brothers parents in the Tsunami. Students brain

stormed on logos, branding, advertising and promotional strategies. The winning team will now present their new design in the Nationals being held in London in July and will pitch their idea to the famous ‘Dragon’ Theo Paphitis.

Can You Help? It is amazing what happens to a school bag and school equipment over the course of a year. That well stocked pencil case ready for the first day in September can miraculously empty as the year goes on. Now is a good time to help us by checking

with your child that they have all of the basic equipment for school. Not bringing pens, pencils, ruler etc. can really get in the way of learning and a quick check at home now we are half way through the year would be appreciated.

New Computing Club Coming Soon! The ICT department is starting a new club where students will learn to design and make their own computer games. These can then be shared online for

others to play. If interested, please see Mr Ivey or Miss Barraclough for more information. Available to all students.

So that students are able to give of their best we will be checking on equipment with students over the next few weeks and your help in ensuring that they still have all the equipment that they need will be very helpful. Richard Westergreen-Thorne Executive Headteacher

Year 7 Innovations Speaking Competition By Taylor Perkins 7.2 Over the last half term, the whole of Year 7 have been working extra hard for the speaking competition which was to be judged by Mr Coulson. Firstly, we looked at some famous speech writers and got some ideas. We studied people like Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela and Malala Yousafzai. This gave us all inspiration and ideas for our own speeches. After looking at all

sorts of persuasive techniques, we wrote an assessed balanced argument about wearing school uniform. All of Year 7 produced amazing pieces of writing, but it was time to put it to the test. We were all asked to transform our writing into an effective speech and have a small competition within our form. One person was chosen as the best from each form.

on Wednesday 12th February and presented their speech to the whole of Year 7! I happened to be chosen to represent my form, 7.2.

Then came the big day. Eight children sat at the front, I waited nervously with bated breath until my turn came. It was nerve-racking but I performed it well, as did the other contestants. Finally, all eight Everyone was people went forward amazing and I can’t to the big competition wait to see who won!
