L.A. THEATREWORKS’

THE MOUNTAINTOP On April 4th, 1968, the world changed forever when Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated outside of his room at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis. What happened the night before is the stirring subject of The Mountaintop. Winner of the prestigious Olivier Award for Best New Play, The Mountaintop is rife with humor and political commentary, while giving us a glimpse at the deeply personal side of Martin Luther King Jr. Hours after his famed final speech, which was punctuated by the immortal line, “I’ve been to the mountaintop,” the celebrated Reverend engages in conversations - revealing his hopes, regrets, and fears. The play creates a masterful bridge between mortality and immortality, brilliantly portraying the complexities of a very human historical figure.

LYLE LOVETT & ROBERT EARL KEEN Two Texas music legends take the stage together for a down-home acoustic concert event. A singer, composer and actor, Lyle Lovett has broadened the definition of American music in a career that spans 14 albums. Coupled with his gift for storytelling, the Texas-based musician fuses elements of Americana, swing, jazz, folk, gospel and blues in a convention-defying manner that breaks down barriers. Among his many accolades, besides the four Grammy Awards, he was given the Americana Music Association’s inaugural Trailblazer Award, and has been named Texas State Musician. Now three-decades on from the release of his debut album — with well over a dozen other records to his name, thousands of shows under his belt and still no end in sight to the road ahead — Robert Earl Keen is the very symbol of Americana music. A Texas Heritage Songwriters Hall of Famer, Keen’s literate songcraft and razor wit have stirred up a grassroots sensation, not just in Texas, but in dancehalls, roadhouses, theaters, and festival grounds across the nation. For Keen, the road goes on and on.

AN EVENING WITH

DAVID SEDARIS With sardonic wit and incisive social critiques, David Sedaris has become one of America’s pre-eminent humor writers. The great skill with which he slices through cultural euphemisms and political correctness proves that Sedaris is a master of satire and one of the most observant writers addressing the human condition today. David Sedaris is the author of Barrel Fever and Holidays on Ice, as well as collections of personal essays, Naked, Me Talk Pretty One Day, Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim, When You Are Engulfed in Flames, and Let’s Explore Diabetes with Owls, each of which became an immediate bestseller. Sedaris’ new book is a collection of his diaries, entitled Theft By Finding Diaries (1977-2002).
