BBK in Schools across NYC

BBK is currently leading arts education residencies in 29 schools – our highest number yet – across NYC’s five boroughs. Nine of these are Title1 Schools, which are under-resourced and receive federal funding; 15 schools are through Broadway Junior – a partnership between the Shubert Foundation, NYC’s Department of Education, and Musical Theatre International; and five are through a partnership with the Arthur Miller Foundation, in which we provide a BBK Teaching Artist to partner with a DOE classroom teacher who is the recipient of the Arthur Miller Foundation Fellowship. All our school residencies follow a curriculum aligned with the DOE Blueprint for the Arts, emphasizing the five social-emotional competencies of self-awareness, self-management, responsible decision making, relationship skills, and social awareness. These programs compliment our free community programs, Broadway Bound Players and Broadway Bound Workshop, which are back in person and working on a full musical for the first time since 2020!

BBK Staff Update Please join us in welcoming our new Executive Director Lorraine Goodman and our new Administrative Assistant Ruthie Ostrow! BBK Founder and former Executive Director Erin Glass will continue to be involved with the organization as BBK's Board Chair. Lorraine Goodman received her undergraduate degree from Princeton University and has appeared in leading roles on Broadway in the Tony Award-winning shows The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Les Miserables, and Terrence McNally’s Master Class, where she covered the role originally played by six-time Tony-award winner Audra McDonald. In addition, she has soloed onstage at Carnegie Hall and starred in Cats and Phantom of the Opera abroad. In 2011, Ms. Goodman received her Masters in Performing Arts Administration at NYU’s Steinhardt with a focus in not-for-profit performing arts administration. Her subsequent professional administration experience follows a stellar upward trajectory, starting at The Red Hot Organization to leading development initiatives at New York Musical Festival, Roulette Intermedium, and Princeton AlumniCorps, to stepping in as Interim Executive Director at the Latin American Legal Defense Fund during the early stages of the pandemic.

Ruthie Ostrow is a Brooklyn-based theater educator and arts administrator dedicated to making the arts more accessible to young audiences. She holds a BA in Arts Administration and Journalism from Baruch College and will complete her MA in Educational Theatre (All Grades, Initial Certification) from New York University in 2022. She is fortunate to have worked with TADA! Youth Theater, Acting Out, Treasure Trunk Theatre, the New Victory Theater, Camp Half-Blood, and Marks JCH. She is absolutely delighted to be joining the Broadway Bound Kids team! Outside of the classroom, Ruthie enjoys reading, visiting museums, and finding the best cookies in New York City.

This winter, BBK is running a new 10-week virtual program inspired by the new Disney Film Encanto and Lin Manuel Miranda's music. Students learn introductory components of storytelling, acting, singing, and dancing, as our highly experienced and caring Teaching Artists guide them through the creation of their own choreography and staging, featuring their rare, singular gifts.

Mindfulness Moment

Stressed? Try belly breathing, a calming technique for emotion & behavior management. Students breathe deeply through their noses, notice their bellies expand, then exhale through their mouths. We use this technique often in BBK classes.

Letter from our Executive Director Since taking over as Broadway Bound Kids Executive Director last November, I have been amazed by the work of BBK’s Team — including BBK’s indefatigable administrative staff and our incredible, flexible, and dedicated Teaching Artists. We were thrilled to be offering classes in person, before Omicron burst onto the scene, forcing us to reconsider, reconfigure, and reassign. Throughout it all, BBK has honed its ability to remain agile and positive, while supporting the young people in our programs and providing them with a transformative and inclusive experience. This newsletter gives you a fuller sense of what we have accomplished over the past six months or so — from DOE partnerships to our upcoming Hamilton Interactive, to our free weekend conservatories for middle and high school students. We've also included a short preview of our upcoming summer programs -- stay tuned, it's going to be exciting! We are also taking this opportunity to announce the launch of our new Circle of Friends, which provides advanced knowledge of special events along with a bevy of other benefits. By joining the Circle, you affirm your commitment to seeing BBK grow and serve more young people across NYC, many of whom would not have access to rich arts education without our programs. Finally, we will soon be launching a Spring Auction on CharityBuzz. Please keep your eyes peeled for lots including consultations with industry experts, specialized spa experiences, and (a BBK favorite) tickets to Broadway Shows and Saturday Night Live! It is my deep honor to lead BBK. I thank you again for your continued support. In Community,

Lorraine Goodman
