Feedback Fractal Project - monumental art By Alan Hague
alan@broadripplegazette.com Many Gazette readers know local architect/artist Conrad Cortellini. He wrote Green Broad Ripple in the Broad Ripple Gazette from 2006 to 2008. But some do not know about his current art in development, the Feedback Fractal Project. It is a work that will take years to complete and involves many contributors friends, students, residents, etc. A bit of background is needed. Last year the Gazette covered a reception at Clowes Hall for the 25th anniversary of Conrad’s art that hangs in the lobby, Total Perspective Vortex. That piece is a fractal generated from the Mandelbrot set of mathematical equations. The iterations of the formula that generates the fractals is a digital feedback loop, starting with an initial value, producing a new number, then using that number to feed the formula, and so on. Conrad was looking at a similar feedback loop for his next project, but this time an analog one. When a TV camera is pointed at the TV Screen displaying the camera’s picture, that picture goes back into the camera, comes out on the screen and goes back into the camera, and so on. The result is a kind of visual explosion. To be able to control the chaotic visual effect, Conrad employed a computer program that simulates video feedback. “Analogy is what art is all about...metaphor...this is a portrait of chaos,” exclaimed Conrad, “So, I set out to make a monumental piece of sculpture. 640 by 480. Each of these pixels, you’re talking about 307,000. Each of these pixels are going to be rendered as a little tube.” I asked Conrad how he keeps track of the pixels (tubes) as he creates each one. He uses a coordinate system, like a The original prototype feedback image generated by Conrad. X-Y graph. The DeveloperTown Quadro is the upper left section. “Oh yeah, that’s a real problem. You have two numbers X and Y. That’s the address. Not only are they likely to be unique, 307,000 not two exactly the same, but they’ll only fit in one spot, because they have to connect up with four others around it.” He wrote a computer program to translate the 640 by 480 pixel VGA image of his feedback chaos (see photo above) into the colored paper tubes. Each pixel has a brightness and a color. The program converts the pixel’s brightness into the

From your editor: I have received several requests for a reprint of the 1968 publication “A History of Broad Ripple” by The Junior Historical Society and The Riparian Newspaper, both of Broad Ripple High School. We haven’t published this information since 2004 and many new residents are now in Broad Ripple and have never read it. Where we come from is important. It has some errors. I will try to correct them as they appear. I will attempt to reprint the entire booklet. I will include each section as space permits. -AH
Park attracts tourists Broad Ripple became famous as a recreational and amusement center in the 1900’s. Residents of Indianapolis built resort cabins and cottages along White River for three miles upstream from Broad Ripple. Soon resort areas such as Idlewood, Terrace Beach, Ravenswood, and Wildwood developed. The cottages were given clever names such as “Dew Drop Inn.” There was daily service by rowboat or motor launch to provide the cottages with ice, food, and other provisions. The town of Broad Ripple itself, however, was not the principal drawing place of the northern area of Indianapolis. Broad Ripple Park was the real center of social life in Broad Ripple and was noted all over the country. Broad Ripple Park had its beginning when Jonas Huffman received a 60.05 acre tract of land north of Indianapolis from the United States government on September 16, 1822. Later, the Huffman farm owned by James Huffman, Jonas’ son, and Charles Dawson was visited by picnickers from miles around. By 1866, the Dawson family had taken over full ownership of the land and maintained it until 1904, except for a strip of land along the river which was sold to the Broad Ripple Transit Company in 1902. In 1904, Morton and Stanton, two building contractors, bought the land and began construction of the park. In 1907, the park became the great amusement center known as White City [NOTE: the name is a reference to the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair Columbian Exhibition. It was nicknamed White City due to the massive white buildings] when the White City Company of Indianapolis,
owned by W. H. Tabb and Dr. Robert C. Light, leased the park for nine years. The park was given the nickname of Broad Ripple Park since it was located on the outskirts of that community, and about 100 people from the village were employed there. The White City company added many facilities to the park, giving it the appearance of Coney Island.

corresponding tube’s length. It converts the color into a color for the inside of the tube. Is also calculates the angle of the end of the tube so all four edges will meet up with the four surrounding tube heights. A series of pixels (tubes) are created by the program and get printed on a color printer using heavy watercolor paper, then cut out of the sheet by a computerized stencil cutter. The tubes are then rolled and glued by hand. Conrad then makes a base (see photo right) that holds ten rows of ten tubes (100 tubes/pixels). An aluminum frame section holds four row of four bases (1600 tubes). A Quadro is a larger aluminum frame that holds four rows of four frame sections (25,600 tubes/ pixels). Each Quadro is about 8 feet by 8 feet. The first finished Quadro, called the DeveloperTown Quadro, has been stored at DeveloperTown at 53rd and Winthrop Avenue since is was completed in 2016. The finished piece will eventually be three rows of four Quadros (307,200 tubes/ pixels) and will be about 32 feet wide and 24 feet high. Conrad has been the Artist-In-Residence at Scecina High School at 16th and Emerson Avenue to continue his work on the second Quadro. Many students have built tubes for the sculpture. Conrad’s concept is, “Include the community. We came up with the idea of distributed art production. So, I’ve had kids both here (Scecina) and at Shortridge making a module. And their name’s gonna be on it. A module is the easy piece, it’s a hundred pieces, 10 by 10. A section is 16 modules, and a Quadro is 16 sections. It just scales up.” When I first interviewed Conrad back in July 2018, three of the 16 sections had been completed for the second Quadro, called the Scecina Quadro (see below).
Recently, the 16th section of the Scecina Quadro was completed. On June 12th, Conrad held a party at his lab at Scecina for the joining of the first two completed Quadros. This piece of the sculpture measures 16 feet wide and 8 feet tall. It is 1/8th of the final sculpture. In the close-up photo to the right, the individual tubes making up the pixels of the original image are visible. You can see how each tube is angled to join with its four neighboring tubes. When viewed from a distance, the piece becomes a 3-dimensional colorful work, and even in its present state of only 2 of the 12 Quadros, is stunning. The Broad Ripple Gazette hopes that a Broad Ripple location for next Quadrobuilding effort can be found. That way Broad Ripple residents can join in on the construction.

from pg. 1
Along the 500-foot boardwalk and the 230-foot cement walk on the west side of the park, there were a dance hall, a restaurant, a lunch counter, a photo gallery, a penny arcade, an airship, a soda fountain, and a myth city. At the park’s north end, there were exits to the river, boathouses, and a 40’ x 785’ romantic board walk extending over the water. A Venetian canal, a fire show, a scenic railroad, an 80’x 100’ concrete Natatorium or pool, and an open circus were located on the northeast side of the park. Amusements in the east section of the City included the “bump-thebump,” bowling alleys, the “Johnstown Flood,” the Theaters of Paris, carousels, and other midway rides. One of the unique features of White City was the exhibit in which white horses jumped from an elevated platform into a tank of water. The park attractions were situated around a five hundred foot center court containing many concession stands. A 250’x 100’ lagoon was situated at the court’s north end. The lagoon was spanned by a bridge, under which the “chutes” passed. In addition to the amusement park attractions, there were also picnic facilities. On Sunday afternoons during the spring and summer, families from all around the Broad Ripple area would come to the park for a picnic lunch and an afternoon of entertainment.

Broad Ripple American Legion Post #3 Law Enforcement Officer of the Year
Officer Kyle Butz has been selected as the Broad Ripple Post #3 Law Enforcement Officer of the Year. He has also been selected as the American Legion 11th District Officer of the year, and will represent the district in the Department of Indiana competition. A 19 year veteran with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Dept., Officer Butz has served the last 9 years as an evidence technician with IMPD North District. His job is “on the street” collecting and processing the evidence that establishes the stable platform on which successful prosecutions are built. He works with the officers initially responding to an incident, the detectives who develop cases, and often times with the victims. He processes crime scenes for everything except homicides and rapes. On average, he processes sixty scenes per week. He is often called to court to explain and/or defend evidence. His evidence has never been rejected, resulting in many successful prosecutions. When not actively processing a crime scene he works as a patrolman in support of other officers. Sergeant Roger Tuchek nominated Officer Butz. He said, “What many would consider “just doing your job as an ET” is probably the single key element to get criminals convicted and hold them responsible for their illegal conduct. Any success last year and this year in resolving crimes on North District, and the many “shots fired” runs in our neighborhoods, would not have been achieved if it were not for Officer Butz’s attention to detail and willingness to be a member of the team.” North District Commander Michael Wolley said, “Officer Butz’s peers recognize him to be a hard working professional who does the job right, consistently. His superior work product has yielded great success in the prosecution of several criminals throughout his career. Officer Butz makes himself available for the needs of his fellow officers without being asked and with a great attitude.”

winner!
We have another winner of the Rene’s Bakery Mistakes Can Be Sweet contest. Jason DeYoung found a typo in The Broad Ripple Gazette. Jason will get a treat (up to $10 value) at Rene’s Bakery located at 6524 Cornell Avenue. You too can enter. Find a mistake in The Gazette and email it to us at contest@ broadripplegazette.com. Rules on page 7, lower left.
The background of The Gazette:
I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather Girstle Hague was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My great grandparents John E. Hague and Nora Hague lived at 6148 N. College Avenue and 6170 Guilford Avenue. My great grandparents John Dawson and Nora Ringer Dawson lived at 6122 Carrollton Avenue. My 2nd great grandaunt and uncle, Sarah Coil Thompson and Hamlin Thompson, lived at 6116 Guilford Avenue. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and was Assistant Band Director at BRHS, now band director at Crispus Attucks High School. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Association, he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1940’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/recently opened business or longtime business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you.

Poetic Thoughts

3 Late Night Tributes In the wee hours I was watching a Bob Dylan special on PBS. It inspired me to write a poem on his emergence. Then I threw in tributes to Robert Frost and Langston Hughes.

Bobby Plump shows the newly presented Proclamation from the State of Indiana declaring “Eric J. Holcomb, Governor of the State of Indiana, do hereby proclaim June 22, 2019 as the 65th anniversary reunion of Milan High School’s 1954 State Championship team”. Bobby Plump, of Plump’s Last Shot at 6416 Cornell Ave [D5 on map], made the winning basket for Milan at the 1954 State Tourney against Muncie at the Hinkle Fieldhouse. The story was immortalized in the film Hoosiers.

Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Lets try to place a 6 in the left section on the top row in the medium puzzle containing 1-2-3-5-9. The 6 in the center section of the top row eliminates the space to the right of the 9. The 3 in the right section of the top row eliminates the space to the right of the 3. The 6 in the left section of the bottom row eliminates the space above the 3. The only place left is above the 5. You have learned one technique used to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

WINE: CAN DO!
MEDIUM
A sure sign of summer: wine in a can. They are available year round but when the weather warms, the wine stockers move the displays to the front of the wine section reminding us of how easy it is to slip a can or two into a back pack or cooler for picnics, concerts, pool parties or post yard work refreshment. How lucky can we get?! Before you turn up your nose at the thought of drinking or pouring wine from a can, know that some of the country’s leading producers, including organic and small parcel wineries, offer quality juice in a can. Each 375 ml can equals half a bottle of wine or two and a half glasses. Wine cans are lined with a special polymer coating so you aren’t tasting “tin”. They are easy to produce, ship and recycle. DARK HORSE has offered pinot grigio and rose wine in a can for several years. The latest in its stable of sippers include a pair of dry style bubblies and a bold red. The California Brut Rose Sparkling is made from pinot noir and chardonnay. It’s pale pink in color with notes of both red and stone fruit. The California Brut Sparkling is made from chardonnay and gives up bubbly, creamy flavors of apple, pears and a touch of almond. The Dark Horse Pinot Noir is bold, smooth, and very dry with robust flavors of black cherry and raspberry. Drink this one at room temp or slightly cool. Serve the others cold. Add some frozen grapes or berries as natural “ice cubes” for the sparklers. Wine in a can is NOT meant to be aged. Wine is acidic and the cans are lined but at some point the chemistry of the two will clash so it’s best to consume your can within a year of purchase. Which is another reason I like wine in a can. I’m a wine drinker not a collector so I say “flip it and sip it”.

by Brandt Carter Let the Fireworks Begin July means fireworks. The “oohs” and “aahs” of crowds gathering to watch aerial extravaganzas, whether set to music or not, are irrepressible as the night sky fills with these great distractions from the summer heat. Celebrating events with fireworks is a centuries-old practice. We have the Chinese to thank for inventing the creative pyrotechnic art form thousands of years ago. History maintains that around 200 B.C. someone in China threw a piece of bamboo into a fire, causing an explosion. Thus began a quest to harness the explosive phenomenon. Between 600-900 A.D., tinkers invented gunpowder, and the art of fireworks followed. In the 15th and 16th centuries, Italians became known for making aerial shell fireworks that exploded into bursts of gold and silver sparks. As early as the 1600s, there is mention of fireworks in the Americas. One year after the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the First Independence Day celebration included fireworks in 1777. Thus was born a tradition that remains strong today. Fireworks have a natural way of bringing people together. From backyard barbeques to city-wide celebrations and from a handful of explosives to hour-long displays, fireworks stir the spirit of their audiences. Even the most cynical among us can become captivated by the spectacle. Having long wondered about what names different pyrotechnic explosives might have, I recently did research. Here are a few that may help you identify fireworks at the next display you see. Peony, the most common shell type, is a spherical break of colored stars that burn without a tail effect. Chrysanthemum is a spherical break with a colored starburst, its stars leaving a visible trail of sparks. Dahlia breaks round and then has stars that travel a longer distance from the shell-break before burning out. Some dahlia shells are cylindrical rather than spherical to allow for larger stars. Willow is similar to a chrysanthemum but has long-burning silver or gold stars that spread like a weeping willow. Palm bursts with a few large comet stars and a thick, rising tail (like a tree trunk) so that the display suggests a palm tree. Sometimes color is inserted inside the palm burst to simulate coconuts. Ring, a shell exploding into a circular form, can feature faces, hearts, and clovers. Diadem is a type of Peony or Chrysanthemum with a center cluster of non-moving stars, normally with a contrasting color or effect. Kamuro looks like a boy’s haircut – a dense burst Taken at the Ravenswood fireworks show. of glittering silver or gold stars that leaves a heavy glitter trail. Crossette is a shell containing several large stars that travel a short distance before breaking apart into smaller stars. My heart flutters when the sound explosives are fired be they Bangs that mimic gunshots or the Crackle, Hummer, and Whistle, which are created by the resonance of gas. All these seem to find their way into Ravenswood, Downtown Indy, and Ft. Harrison displays. Then there is our neighborhood. We are surrounded by backyard celebrations. We don’t do fireworks because our dogs high-tail it to the closets and shake until there is at least an hour of silence. Note: It is wise to sequester dogs during fireworks. Many run in fear when subjected to the booms, hisses, and whirls of fireworks. So now that fireworks season is upon us, enjoy, enjoy! Take to the outdoors and “ooh” and “ahh” with the best of them.
