Broad Ripple High School - our neighborhood school since 1886.

SPRING ART WALK

by Alan Hague

The case for BRHS

There were 12 stops along the way at the 2017 Spring Art Walk in Broad Ripple. Artifacts, Ashland Gallery, BRVA office, The Bungalow, Half Baked Pottery & Gifts, Indianapolis Art Center, Marigold Clothing, Neat-O, PactSafe, Perk Up Cafe, The Potter’s House, and Scandinavian Comfort.

Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) recently announced that a task force has recommended the closure of three of the seven Indianapolis high schools. There have been many rumors swirling about that Broad Ripple High School (BRHS) is high on the list for closure. I decided to make the case for BRHS. This isn’t an editorial against the other six schools. It is for BRHS. The task force report states that 4 million dollars can be saved each year by closing three schools. That may sound like a lot, but it is only 1.7% of the IPS annual budget. Disrupting three neighborhoods and hundreds of student’s lives to save 1.7% seems drastic. One suggestion at a public meeting was to move IPS administration to the high schools and close the downtown building. That downtown real estate would be valuable. We need to invest in the north side of Indy to continue the recent growth spurt. We should take the successes of schools 84 and 59 and use those ideas to improve BRHS. Make it a showcase for IPS that attracts families to the area, rather than close it and abandon the future. Plus points: 1) The north side is growing. Apartments are being built at a record pace, which will bring more and more school-age families into the neighborhood. BRHS is the only north side IPS high school. Now is the time to reach out those families and show them what IPS has to offer, instead of sending unintended messages by closing schools near them. Let’s not give up on the north side of Indy. Sure, it will be a few years until the high school age population grows, but lets give them something to grow into, in their neighborhood. I overheard at one of the public meetings that it is too expensive to bus students up to the north side on Indy. Broad Ripple is not that far from downtown and has wonderful facilities. The small cost saving isn’t worth leaving behind an important north side school.

2) The facilities. BRHS is an Arts and Humanities magnet school with a tremendous legacy. The Gene Poston Auditorium was dedicated in 2011. It has served the surrounding community as its only professional theater auditorium with a full orchestra pit in the area. This auditorium should be rented out for other local theater troupes and music groups that don’t have a permanent home of their own. There is plenty of parking at the school to handle performances of all sizes and kinds. The arts sections of the BRHS building have ample band and orchestra rehearsal halls, dance studios, a black box theater, and private lesson rooms. The gym was added in the late 1980s and seats 3522 fans. Classrooms have been added on to over the years and modernized. Currently, new wi-fi and networking is being installed. Dieterich Field (named after coach Ed Dieterich) is where the Rockets and many other non-IPS teams play football. Renting the field to other groups is another income generator. 3) Ripple support. Dedicated alumni in the BRHS Alumni Association gave out $11,000 in scholarships this year alone. This adds to the $12,000 given out previously. At the recent Ripple Round Up scholarships from several other local groups were awarded to students. The Frank Baird Hall of Fame gave out $21,000 this year in scholarships to BRHS students.

INDEX

BRHS has been a key part of the north side of Indianapolis since 1886. It has grown in amazing ways over that 130 years. Let’s not abandon the progress that has been accomplished. Please keep Ripple open!

BRHS Band Trip to Holiday World

The Broad Ripple High School bands, under the direction of Tom Ewigleben, filled four buses on May 18 for a performance trip to Holiday World in Santa Claus, Indiana. Each piece was conducted by a different band student. After the performance, the group of 150+ enjoyed the amusement park on this very hot day. An elf told me that Santa wears ice packs to keep cool!

Ripples Showcase at BRHS

By Alan Hague

alan@broadripplegazette.com The Ripples Showcase was held on May 12th (Ripples Acts took a break this year). There were two very creative plays that were written and directed by the students. In 2018, Ripples Acts will return for its 80th year. The show was emceed by Alexis Griffin. The Intermission Acts were performed by Edward Strickling. The first play was Stack and Pack by Jarred Kilgore (above). Jarred came out before the start to explain that the script has a plot and several keys points throughout that the cast will attempt to “hit”, but all in-between will be improv. This was a theme I have never seen at Ripples and it worked well for the troupe. The second play was The Battle of The Budgets Edward Strickling and Alexis Griffin by Jasmine Murphy. This one also had an unusual topic, the current IPS closing of three high schools. Pretty serious stuff for a student play. (The one I wrote in 1978 was Battyman, a parody of the 1966 Batman TV show!) It was a moving performance and I asked Jasmine to allow me to publish a piece of the lyrics. This is not a game man, these are our lives. We said, “This school is like home for us, Dreams are born within these walls. Stop this reconfiguration!” This is a new generation. We are going through things, you can’t even relate to. What should we do? Our school is going to close, We are all alone, speaking from the floor. It seems hopeless, and there’s no way to stop them. Is this truly the end?

IPL files plan for 2018-2020 energy efficiency programs

Indianapolis Power & Light Company (IPL), a subsidiary of The AES Corporation (NYSE: AES), announced today the utility has filed its 2018-2020 Energy Efficiency plan with the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC). IPL has offered cost-effective energy efficiency programs for its customers on an uninterrupted basis since 1993. Energy efficiency remains an important element of IPL’s overall resource plan and will allow for deferred capacity needs, reduced energy costs and the opportunity for customers to have more control over how they understand, manage and reduce their energy usage. IPL is seeking approval to offer the following programs for residential and business customers: • Appliance Recycling: Provides incentives to homeowners to recycle older, less efficient refrigerators, freezers and window AC units. • Income Qualified Weatherization: Provides energy audits, including the installation of energysaving measures and weatherization improvements for income-qualified customers. • Community-Based Lighting: Partners with community organizations to provide light-emitting diode (LED) options to residents through food pantries. • Home Energy Reports: Informs customers about their households’ energy use, including a comparison to similar homes in the area. • School Education: Informs and educates elementary-aged students by providing them a takehome energy efficiency kit. • Multi Family Direct Install: Offers the direct installation of a variety of energy efficiency measures in multi-family housing units. • Lighting & Appliances: Offers point of purchase rebates for certain high efficiency lighting products such as LED bulbs and smart thermostats. • Demand Response: Pays incentives to customers who allow IPL to manage their air conditioner during peak electricity usage periods in the summer months. • Whole Home: Provides rebates for energy efficient equipment and walk-through energy assessments, including the installation of energy saving measures and recommendations for improving a home’s energy efficiency.

• Online Energy Assessment: Customers can use this online energy assessment tool that includes delivery of an energy efficiency kit. • Business Prescriptive/Custom Rebates: Provides rebates to business customers who install energy efficient equipment. • Small Business Direct Install: Provides small business customers with low cost, energy efficiency measures and audit recommendations to improve the efficiency of their business. If the current plan is approved, these programs will begin on January 1, 2018. Complete details on IPL’s current energy efficiency programs for residential and business customers, called IPL PowerToolsTM, can be found at IPLpower.com. Current IPL energy efficiency programs will continue through December 31, 2017.

Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Association, he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1940’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

Hello sunshine! It’s May in Indianapolis so not only can you hear the roar of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway through the open windows, outdoor music season is starting. This round I’ll highlight two venues that offer free - I strongly encourage you to enjoy dinner while you’re there - al fresco concerts.

The Jazz Kitchen 5377 N. College Ave 21+, outdoor music Tues & Wed 6 pm, Thurs 6:30 pm

The Jazz Kitchen hosts music on their deck three nights every week. The same delicious Jazz Kitchen menu and drinks are available outdoors. On Tuesday evenings the Red Hot Whiskey Sippers play. Their put a New Orleans funk twist on jazz standards. The RHWS are Richard Dole (trombone), Bill Lancton (guitar), Michael Beck (drums), and Jim Lichfield (bass). Wednesday evenings alternate between Tim Brickley’s Troubadore (5/24 ,6/7, 6/21, etc) nights - Tim is a wonderful singer-songwriter and he’ll often feature other musicians and Scott Ballantine & Andra Faye (5/31, 6/14, 6/28, etc) they play a wonderful mix of blues, country, and roots music. Thursday evenings feature the Bembe Latin Band. They play toe-tapping Latin salsa. Check the Jazz Kitchen website for more details: www.thejazzkitchen.com

Flatwater 832 E. Westfield Blvd all-ages, outdoor music Wed - Sat 8 pm, Sun 6 pm

Flatwater hosts music on the deck each week (weather permitting of course) Wednesday - Sunday. It’s a great place to have a mini-getaway - in your mind at least - outdoor bar and listening to music while looking at water screams vacation to me. Here is the rest of May lineup: Thursday, May 25: Indy Blues Trio Friday, May 26: Joe Hart & The Walk the Talk Band Saturday, May 27: The Turnip Seeds Sunday, May 28: Ryan Connolly Wednesday, May 31: Craig Thurston Their June calendar should be posted by the time you’re reading this: flatwaterbroadripple.com -Nora Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time. My favorite book is The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck. In it she describes a poor farmer who diligently tills the soil and his greatest joy is in walking the Earth. He gains wealth through his diligence, but loses his spiritual relationship with the land. His wife in the beginning was a homely, but righteous and hard-working woman. He begins seeing a beautiful and materialistic prostitute. He marries her, too. The second wife causes him great grief. In the end of the book, when he is old, he comes to a sense of peace. Because he is no longer a slave to his sex drive, he can freely walk the Earth.

To: Pearl S. Buck Shall we retire and rest on the laurels that we have amassed through a lifetime of toil? Shall we rest secure and retire on the wealth that we have put away from tilling the soil? There is much more to be done Before we rest in the sun We’ve given birth to worth and worth has worth And it is worthy of Us to walk the earth C.W. Pruitt II Sept. 27, 2005 CW Pruitt II has been on the poetry scene in Broad Ripple for years. Email your questions/comments to cw@broadripplegazette.com

Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s start with the easy puzzle. We will try to put an 5 in the left section of the top row which contains 1-3-6-8. The 5 in the middle section of the top row eliminates the space to the right of the 3. The 5 in the right section of the top row eliminates the spaces to the right of the 8. The 5 in the left section of the middle row eliminates the space between the 6-8. The only place left is to the right of the 1. You have learned one technique used to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

Can Do Wine

If you’re heading to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Sunday, remember that glass bottles aren’t allowed in your cooler. Not a problem if you want to pack soda or beer. But what about wine? Oregon’s Union Wine Company offers up a tasty selection of pinot noir, pinot grigio, bubbly and rose in its UNDERWOOD label wines in a can. Francis Ford Coppola’s “Sofia” Blanc de Blanc mini’s are cans of bubbles that come with a bendable straw for sipping. Indiana winery Mallow Run offers hard cider in a can. Think of it as adult apple juice made from a blend of apples from Adrian Orchards in Indianapolis. When you get home from the track, twist open a bottle of the new Apothic Rose. It’s tart crisp dry pink wine. Made from a blend of Tempranillo and Grenache it offers up aromas and flavors of black cherry, wild strawberry and a hint of lychee. Affordable and widely available. Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter Memorial Day’s True Meaning HEADQUARTERS GRAND ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC General Orders No.11, WASHINGTON, D.C., May 5, 1868 1. The 30th day of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, and hamlet church-yard in the land. In this observance no form of ceremony is prescribed, but posts and comrades will in their own way arrange such fitting services and testimonials of respect as circumstances may permit. We are organized, comrades, as our regulations tell us, for the purpose among other things, “of preserving and strengthening those kind and fraternal feelings which have bound together the soldiers, sailors, and marines who united to suppress the late rebellion.” What can aid more to assure this result than cherishing tenderly the memory of our heroic dead, who made their breasts a barricade between our country and its foes? Their soldier lives were the reveille of freedom to a race in chains, and their deaths the tattoo of rebellious tyranny in arms. We should guard their graves with sacred vigilance. All that the consecrated wealth and taste of the nation can add to their adornment and security is but a fitting tribute to the memory of her slain defenders. Let no wanton foot tread rudely on such hallowed grounds. Let pleasant paths invite the coming and going of reverent visitors and fond mourners. Let no vandalism of avarice or neglect, no ravages of time testify to the present or to the coming generations that we have forgotten as a people the cost of a free and undivided republic. If other eyes grow dull, other hands slack, and other hearts cold in the solemn trust, ours shall keep it well as long as the light and warmth of life remain to us. Let us, then, at the time appointed gather around their sacred remains and garland the passionless mounds above them with the choicest flowers of spring-time; let us raise above them the dear old flag they saved from his honor; let us in this solemn presence renew our pledges to aid and assist those whom they have left among us a sacred charge upon a nation’s gratitude, the soldier’s and sailor’s widow and orphan. 2. It is the purpose of the Commander-in-Chief to inaugurate this observance with the hope that it will be kept up from year to year, while a survivor of the war remains to honor the memory of his departed comrades. He earnestly desires the public press to lend its friendly aid in bringing to the notice of comrades in all parts of the country in time for simultaneous compliance therewith. 3. Department commanders will use efforts to make this order effective. By order of JOHN A. LOGAN N.P. CHIPMAN WM. T. COLLINS, A.A.G. Commander-in-Chief Adjutant General Official N.P. CHIPMAN Memorial Day is an American holiday, observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Let us all pause and remember our soldiers and their families on this Memorial Day. Brandt Carter, artist, herbalist, and naturalist, owns Backyard Birds at 2374 E. 54th Street.
