THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF CHLAMYDIA Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted infection that is one of the most common STIs in the UK. It goes undetected in many sufferers and if left untreated can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease and ectopic pregnancy in women and reduced fertility in men. WHAT CAUSES CHLAMYDIA? This STI is usually passed between sexual partners during sexual intercourse or by sharing sex aids and toys. It is a bacterial infection that can affect both men and women and mothers can also pass it onto their babies during pregnancy. CHLAMYDIA SYMPTOMS Many people don’t know they have Chlamydia because they only have mild or no symptoms. As a result, is often called a silent infection. However, some people report the following symptoms between one to three weeks and several months after coming into contact with the infection. Women can notice bleeding in between periods or during sex, pain during sex or whilst passing urine, different-looking vaginal discharge and pain in the lower abdomen. In men, symptoms may include a white or cloudy discharge from the penis, painful testicles and pain when urinating. This STI can be easily treated with antibiotics. It is important that your partner is tested and treated too to avoid re-infection occurring. While you may be apprehensive about visiting us for a Chlamydia test, it is very important that you seek help if you think you may have this STI. It is very easy to test for and treat and left untreated it can go on to cause complications such as pelvic pain, blocked fallopian tubes, infertility and ectopic pregnancy.
