Art, music, fashion, tech - we've got it all! Music is at the top of the bill for BritWeek, as we honor Lucian Grainge, Chairman & CEO of Universal Music Group with our Creative Fusion Award and will.i.am, Founder and CEO of i.am+ with the Entrepreneur of the Year Award. AND we will host a fabulous Rock Photography exhibit at the historic Sunset Marquis Hotel, co-curated by Julian Lennon and Timothy White. Art and design also play heavily into our 2015 program, with British exhibits featuring J.M.W.Turner at the Getty Center and Thomas Heatherwick at the Hammer Museum. Incidentally, Mr. Heatherwick will also receive the 2015 BritWeek Christopher Guy Design Icon of the Year Award. We have also inaugurated our Visual Artist of the Year Award, recognizing emerging artist RYCA. This year, we especially wanted to highlight the rich tradition of science fiction in Britain. From Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, written 200 hundred years ago, to Doctor Who, the Brits have been creators and collaborators in science fiction literature, film and television. Check out the article on sci-fi in this year's magazine. We hope to see you at one or more of BritWeek's many events.

California’s profound effect on the music industry can be charted from trail-blazing artists such as The Beach Boys to Kendrick Lamar and Silicon Valley companies including Apple and Google. While relocating to New York from London five years ago to become CEO of Universal Music Group, it became apparent to Lucian Grainge CBE that the company needed to move its headquarters to Los Angeles. “We had to be closer to both the established players and the startups that were having the greatest effect on our industry,” Grainge says. “And that meant moving the epicenter of our company to the West Coast and closer to Silicon Valley.” Digital downloads and streaming now account for the majority of the record industry’s revenue.

HEATHERWICK
You’re the 2015 Recipient of the BritWeek Christopher Guy Design Icon Award. Where do you draw some of your inspiration and creativity? People whose work I’ve admired most are those who find an area that hasn’t been saturated. They had an idea of something that was missing in that particular sector. We are trying to look for the gaps, doing our own version by offering something different. Trying to find our angle, that’s what the beginning part of our development work is. The strategic direction will lead the physical design solutions, an approach before the design idea. On a $220m project in Hong Kong it was clear to us that there was an opportunity within the detail. It was a coordination of many details, putting extra focus on the points where you touch the development, the toilets and the elevator buttons for example. We made a toilet where the door very gently closes behind you…you can’t see the hinge. We looked at the places where there is normally no care.
BritWeek www.britweek.org
Technology is becoming an integral part of everyday life. How do you embrace that in your designs ? Technology is just a set of tools. Technology has gotten hogged by digital technology, but for me it is as much about the laser cutter and pliers as it is about 3D printing and
"Inventiveness and resourcefulness are written into our collective DNA". Is this a fair appraisal of Brits?
I think it’s a fair appraisal of humanity in general, but it has been allowed to manifest in Britain in quite a pure way through the freedom of democracy and without too many blockages. There is a confidence that has built up over time, a cultural build up in believing that you can solve a problem rather than being resigned to it. I feel like I am working in a much bigger legacy of being Heatherwick Studio - New Bus for London Photo: Iwan Baan surrounded by that proof video conferencing. We design the studio to draw out the best things in each other. Human beings are great problem solvers. It’s interesting to zoom between the largest strategic thinking and the smallest manifestations of a bigger philosophy. It’s rare that there is cohesion of thinking in an environment. Anyone and everyone can feel and notice where there is care and attention.

BRITS IN SPACE
BRITS IN Spaaaaaace In many ways you could say that the Brits invented science fiction. Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, H.G. Wells’ The Time Machine, and Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World paved the way for a whole genre of TV shows on themes of time travel. Imagine a world without Doctor Who or a world with C-3PO as a smarttalking American instead of a fidgety, worrying Brit? The Brits have dominated the science fiction genre in so many ways for almost two centuries.
H Wells’s The Time Machine (1895) H.G. and Aldous Huxley’s Brave New a World (1932) paved the way for a W whole genre of TV shows on themes w of o time travel, special powers and alien invasion, as well as grim pica tures of things to come. Incidentally, t Huxley lived in Los Angeles from H 1937 until his death in 1962. 1
Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1818) is widely regarded to be the first science fiction novel. But long before that there was John Milton and his Paradise di Lost (1667), saturated in science, doomsday consequences and cosmic phenomena. Science’s possibilities, but also its costs, weighed on Milton throughout his life, as they did on Shelley and any science-fictionist worth his or her salt. BritWeek www.britweek.org
A year later, the first episode of Doctor Who l aired on BBC television. Still going strong half a century later, this is now the longest running science fiction TV series with a cult following around the world.

BRITS IN SPACE
The quintessential British actor ha s be en a ke y ro le in man y science fiction productions. Brits are often cast as the evil British villain, but when British Shakespearean actor Patrick Stewart took command of the Starship Enterprise in Star Trek: the Next Generation as Jean-Luc Picard (1987-94), he turned this stereotype on its (hairless) head. On being questioned about the significance of his role compared to his distinguished Shakespearean career, Stewart has said that: "The fact is all of those years in Royal Shakespeare Company – playing all those kings, emperors, princes and tragic heroes – were nothing but preparation for sitting in the captain's chair of the Enterprise." Maybe that paved the way for his next sci-fi character: Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men film series alongside Brit Ian McKellen. In 1975, when George Lucas was casting his upcoming sci-fi film The Star Wars (which later became just Star Wars), he went to London to see if he could find actors who would fit the criteria for droids R2-D2 and C-3PO. For the part of ‘Threepio’, he chose Anthony Daniels, a classical actor used to portraying Shakespeare on the stage.
Lucas originally believed that Threepio should talk like a “sort of used-car dealer, a fast-talking guy with an American accent”. Lucas soon realized that an English accent, like the one possessed by Daniels, could serve as the perfect accompaniment to C3PO's uppity uptightness. The main function of this protocol droid is diplomacy, a human cyborg ambassador. Threepio’s shiny golden finish makes him a kind of space-age Downton Abbey-style butler. Guinness's role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in the original Star Wars trilogy beginning in 1977, brought him worldwide recognition. He is a mentor to the protagonist and the Shakespearean voice no doubt added gravitas. In 2013 it was confirmed that the production of Star Wars Episode VII would take place in the UK. The move by Disney to shoot in London has a certain historical resonance: all six previous Star Wars movies have included UK production time, in studios such as Elstree, Shepperton, Leavesden, Ealing and Pinewood. Like The Force Awakens, filming of Episode VIII will also take place in London. With Episode VII scheduled to arrive in cinemas by Christmas, it looks like Britain’s place in the canon of science fiction is here to stay. May the force be with you! Article by Richard Bence

About Us Our family business was founded in 1886 in Harrogate, one of the most beautiful towns in Yorkshire. Since then we’ve built our business based on key principles of quality, fairness and respect for both the people we work with and the planet. We’re still family owned today and we work hard to stay true to those Ǥ Ƥ appreciate those same values too. A family that simply loves tea Whatever we do here at Taylors of Harrogate, we like to do it properly. Maybe it’s just the Yorkshire way of doing things. We’re a proud family business – three generations, in fact – and we’ve always been into making good tea. Done right, it’s amazing what a simple cup of tea can do really. Things have a habit of feeling instantly better after a proper brew. We’ve come a long way Ƥ Yorkshire Tea in the 70s. Who’d have thought back then that we’d now be making one of Britain’s favorite brews?

Walkers Shortbread Gluten Free Strawberry Shortcake with Crystallized Basil Indulge in this easy afternoon tea-time treat, sure to be a sweet crowd pleaser and perfect for long hot summer days. Its super easy to whip up thanks to Walkers Shortbread AND gluten free thanks to their brand new gluten free range.
Ingredients (Serves 4)
Strawberry Shortcake:
For the Crystallized Basil 4 small basil leaves 1 egg white slightly beaten 1 tbsp of caster sugar / fine granulated
Start by placing ¾ of the sliced strawberries into a small saucepan. (The remaining ¼ is for placing on top of the shortcake when serving – so keep the pretty slices!)
For the Strawberry Shortcake 2 ½ cups / 300g Strawberries hulled and sliced (plus 4 for serving) ¼ cup sugar, ¼ cup water, 1 tsp vanilla ½ pint heavy whipping cream 1 tbsp confectioners sugar 1 x pack Walkers Shortbread Gluten Free
Method : Crystallized Basil: The crystallized basil is very easy, but it takes some time to dry so start with this or you can make it the day before. Lightly brush the basil leaf with the egg white Dunk the basil in the sugar gently until it is all coated. Place leaves on a paper towel and leave somewhere to dry out. I left mine outside in the sunshine and it dried within an hour! These will keep for a few days in an airtight container at room temperature.
Add the sugar, 1 tsp of vanilla and water and simmer for 5 minutes until soft and syrupy. Leave to one side to cool. Whip the cream with 1 tbsp of confectioners sugar until it forms stiff peaks Now we just assemble the shortcake! Spread a layer of cream on top of one Walkers Shortbread biscuit, then a spoonful of the cooked strawberries, then another Walkers Shortbread biscuit, more cream and top with a few pretty slices of the uncooked strawberries, and one of your crystallized basil leaves to finish. Serve straight away and enjoy this classic strawberry shortcake with a sweet basil twist.

RESTAURANTS The Lost Knight, Echo Park
The latest British pub to hit LA takes shape in The Lost Knight, an Echo Park hangout where the decor ranges from a formal English dining room to a dark and lively bar. Sausage rolls, Welsh Rarebit, Beet Wellington—all the traditional hits are here, along with a draught list of local beers, including MacLeod’s British ales. Grab a pint and head to the back pub area, where soccer—er, football—games are projected onto a flat screen.

f SHOPPING & STYLE
Vivienne Westwood, Melrose Avenue / West Hollywood Known for her iconic punk style and trademark draping, British designer Vivienne Westwood set up her first shop across the pond on Melrose Avenue in 2011. Dame Westwood’s three-story US flagship store is a Melrose landmark, known on the avenue for its neon pink sign. The shop carries men’s and women’s clothing and it’s the only location on the West Coast where shoppers can purchase made-to-order bridal gowns from the eccentric designer.
As the only brewery in LA to exclusively brew British style ales, MacLeod has been satisfying homesick Brits across the city since it opened last June. Brewing out of a nondescript Van Nuys warehouse, the tap room is a homey space where board games abound and local artwork fills the walls. Year-round brews include the Session Gap, a subtle and smooth ordinary bitter; and Jackie Tar, a malty stout that makes a perfect companion while reminiscing about the homeland.

LET THERE BE LIGHT
LET THERE BE LIGHT BritWeek's science fiction-themed Red Carpet Launch party this year will feature lighting created by world famous, Emmynominated lighting designer, Marc v ded vi Brickman, with equipment provided by Mickey Curbishley of PRG Concert Touring Group. Perhaps most famous for his astonishing lighting effects for British band Pink Floyd over four decades, Marc has worked with many artists, and world events, including the Olympics. Most recently his work has been seen atop the Empire State Building and in composer Hans Zimmer's concert rt series. BritWeek caught up with Marc at his Malibu home.
BritWeek www.britweek.org
Q1. When did you see the light, Marc? How did lighting become your calling? Great question‌I did see the light during my 15th year on the planet. After those enlightening moments, I began building my first light show.
A few years later, I began my professional career lighting Count Basie, Duke Ellington, and Johnny Mathis, along with many other legends of the time in the Philadelphia area where I resided circa 1971-1974. During that period, I met a musician one evening called Bruce Springsteen.
Q2. It is hard to imagine a Pink Floyd con concert without amazing lighting. H How did that happen? Did they k know what they were getting into w when they first asked you to light tthem up? 24 24hrs before FLOYD opened THE WALL '79 here in Los Angeles, I received a call asking for my help. askin

LET THERE BE LIGHT
Roger Waters and Alan Parker had been to a Springsteen show and were impressed with my theatrical interpretation of the music in light coupled with Bruce’s performance.
“THE WALL in its simplest form was a rock opera - not a traditional concert. “
Tony Malkin, the owner of the ESB [Empire State Building] is a visionary. 100% credit for updating the lighting system at ESB [goes] to LED. Particularly his vision of the NYC skyline in which ESB plays the central role. The installation of the LED system was completed by Philips. I liken my role as being given the keys to the most expensive, fastest, sleekest, race car on the planet. I am the winning driver.
“The first night lighting at ESB without the luxury of being able to view my work prior to the show was one of the greatest nail biting moments of my career.” As far as the IPHONE control... that is urban myth :)… maybe. FLOYD was looking for the form. When I arrived the lighting was chaotic. I brought a design ethic with order to the lighting in less than 24 hrs. Our relationship began in that moment and continues til present day.
Q3. You recently installed an extraordinary lighting system on top of the Empire State Building, with a seemingly infinite capability to put on light shows for the city of New York. What were your thoughts and intentions when you built that system and is it true you can control it from your iPhone no matter where you are? BritWeek www.britweek.org

Achieving a Get that PERFECT FLAWLESS RED CARPET LIP, RADIANT GLOW isn't which I’ve done recently on actresses Janel Parrish from as hard as you think...

1 MY MUST HAVES: First prep the hair with British brand Lee Stafford's Heat Protection Spray from his super moisturizing & magical Ubuntu line (I want to eat this stuff it smells so good) then I like to add Dry Texturizing Spray by Oribe (also smells devine) to get that BIG, luscious locks look, along with A LOT of back-combing (adding a little more texturizing spray)…your hair will blow-up!!! TRICK: Always backcomb a little at the roots to achieve the BIG hair look (if you find the roots are a little greasy, Lee Stafford's Dry Shampoo Original is to die for and works amazing). Then take random pieces to curl in different directions with your Hot Tools (1 ½ inch curling iron) and spritz in Lee Stafford’s Beach Babe Sea Salt Spray to add texture AND Tigi's Bed Head Hard Head Hairspray to hold volume in place.
TIP: ALWAYS use a sponge instead of a makeup brush (my fav is the beauty blender or a non-latex white rectangular wedge) and ALWAYS dampen the sponge. My TRICK: Mix into your foundation a little illuminator to give the skin that dewy freshness (fav of mine is either Sand Illuminator by Nars for slightly yellow undertones or Pixi Beauty's Flawless Beauty Primer for more pinky peach skin tones). TIP: Apply the mixed magic on the t-zone and blend outwards and upwards before going in with a darker shade to contour. Lighten in between your brows, down the center of the nose, under the eyes, either side of the nose, just above the lips, just below the lips and either side of them using a cream concealer a good shade lighter than the foundation you've used and your skin will be popping already!
3 TIP: Prime lips first with concealer and then lightly dust with powder. Paint on the first coat of your favorite red lipstick or stain (one of my all time favs is Femme Noir by Julie Hewett) blot with tissue, give another light dusting of powder, then reapply one more coat. Voila: the perfect pout that will last all day (and night!)

BRITCODE
BritWeek Coding for Kids With over 8 billion computers worldwide we live in a digital age. Computer “coding” is the “language” of the future. It is projected that by 2020 there will be 1.4 million computer science jobs with only 800,000 graduates to fill those opportunities. Computer Programing (or “coding”) is a marketable skill that is in demand and will be for the foreseeable future. California is the birthplace of Silicon Valley and Silicon Beach. Connectivity in California schools is good, but coding is not yet included in the education curriculum. BritWeek is looking forward to pioneering the growth of coding education in the US, mirroring the UK’s laudable efforts, and to expose kids to a new language that we hope will break down some barriers and help prepare young people for a brighter future!
