Beethoven Coriolan Overture, op.62 Schumann Concerto for Cello, op.129, A minor Dvořák Silent Woods for Cello and Orchestra

{ Interval } Schubert Symphony No. 8, D.759, B minor (Unfinished)

he performance opens with Beethoven’s intense and fiery Coriolan Overture, written for Heinrich Joseph von Collin’s 1804 tragedy, Coriolan. Schumann’s deeply felt and emotional Cello Concerto follows: a work that was completed by the composer in just two weeks during the Autumn of 1850. The piece was never performed during the composer’s lifetime, receiving its premiere on 9th June 1860, four years after his death, in a concert to mark the 50th anniversary of the composer’s birth. Dvořák’s poetic Silent Woods for Cello and Orchestra completes the first half. After the interval we hear Schubert’s beautiful and enigmatic Unfinished Symphony - a musical equivalent, perhaps, of the Mona Lisa. The piece, conceived in two parts, takes us on an extraordinary journey from mystery to reconciliation and redemption. The evening concludes with a surprise item involving a little audience participation! ristol Symphony Orchestra is a brand new orchestra for the city and this is the orchestra’s second public performance, having just performed for the High Sheriff’s Concert at St George’s Bristol. Our broad vision is to play with passion and to take our audiences on exciting and unexpected musical journeys. Our players’ daytime lives span a broad spectrum of careers, including medicine, law, teaching, accountancy, academia and full-time professional music. As well as orchestral concerts, we also enjoy playing in smaller groups of instruments for different occasions, such as weddings, anniversaries, fundraising events, corporate launches and more. In addition, we plan to work with charities, providing another way to fundraise. Our first such concert is tonight’s in support of Penny Brohn UK. We hope you enjoy tonight’s performance and we look forward to welcoming you at future events.
