17th February 2011

Dear Parents The objective of this letter is to provide you with an update on the current status of the school. Since November, when the Governors informed parents that they had submitted an initial application to the Department for Education (DfE) to become a Free School in the State Sector and were entering into a period of consultation with all interested parties, the Governors and school managers have continued to negotiate with the DfE on the Free School option but have also been negotiating with the Pro-Independent Parents’ Working Group (PIPWG) on the possibility of remaining an Independent School. We have now reached the stage in our negotiations with the DfE where it seems clear that we are unlikely to receive permission, in a timely fashion, to proceed with our application and submit a business plan to become a Free School by September 2011. On 14 February the Board of Governors were presented with the PIPWG proposal to maintain the school as an independent school in its present form. The Governors found the PIPWG proposal to be a very real option and as a result, the Governors have decided to withdraw their Free School application to the DfE and concentrate on working with PIPWG to do all that we can to ensure the long term viability and ethos of the school. The Governors and managers of the school will now enter into a short period of due diligence with PIPWG based on the business plan that they submitted. The plan is conditional on receiving £100,000 in donations and we would ask you to support this endeavour.

In summary, the Governors regret that the pupils, parents and staff of the school have had to go through the past period of uncertainty, but it was felt that something had to change in order to improve the long term viability of the school. The intention is that Brigidine School will now continue as an Independent School in the private sector. We welcome the energy and initiative that has come from PIPWG and we hope that everyone involved with the Brigidine community will welcome this removal of uncertainty and will all work together to ensure the future of the school. In particular, we ask those parents who have given notice that they may take their children away from the school in April or September to reconsider their position. With best wishes, Yours sincerely
