SEX Ship Street Gardens is the must-visit destination in Brighton. You’ve probably passed the pretty alley on the way to the beach or used it as a cut through between Ship Street and Middle Street. But you may not realise that this twitten (from the Sussex phrase ‘betwixt and between’) is steeped in a fascinating history. In the early 17th century smugglers dug tunnels from Ship Street Gardens to the seafront, which Charles II used when he fled in exile to France. Later it was declared sacred ground, marked by the planting of the alley’s now 200-year-old fig tree, when the Borgians founded a chapel. Today, Ship Street Gardens has taken on the reputation of Soho by the sea. Home to cult boutique She Said, renowned for its corset fitting service, discreet designer toys and luxury lingerie, the erotic emporium now spans three fabulous shops, including the newly opened bridal boutique, and burlesque and fetish clothing boutique.

AND THE

CITY

She Said, Brighton’s favorite erotic boutique, is hosting a series of events and workshops on a wide range of exciting topics including Japanese Rope Bondage, erotic literature, Tantra, life drawing & much more. Book your tickets early as places are limited. During the festival She Said are also sponsoring The Naughty Walking Tour of Brighton which, starting from Ship Street Gardens, will take in the sensual side of the city. Expect fascinating facts spanning history from the outrageous days of the Prince Regent and his orgies at the Palace, to the roaring 30’s which saw the gay and lesbian scene flourish, up to the present day with Brighton still proudly putting the ‘sex’ into Sussex! Find Ship Street Gardens (between Ship St & Middle St) on the map page 83-84 Grid Ref I9

Neighbouring Impure Art, the UK’s only erotic art gallery, features sensual sculpture, debauched drawings & illicit installations. On the opposite side of the lane award-winning artist Jamie McCartney offers both innocent and intimate casting services at his Brighton Body Casting workshop. And this festival, Ship Street Gardens is about to get more notorious… Jamie McCartney’s monumental wall sculpture ‘The Great Wall of Vagina’ sees its world premier in May. Over five years in the making and consisting of the casts of 400 women’s vaginas, this 9 metre long sculpture can be seen for the first time in the artist’s Brighton Body Casting Studios. Expect to be amazed, educated & fascinated by this astounding piece of art.

“Female genitalia have long been a source of fascination, recently of celebration but generally of confusion. Right here, right now in Ship Street Gardens we’re going to change that for ever. For 400 women their privates are about to go public...” Impure Art, famous for hosting the sensational Madonna nudes, is showcasing the work of local Pin-up artist Jerry Rulf. Inspired by 50’s glamour artist Gil Elvran, Jerry paints Brighton girls in his synonymous saucy vintage style. He now has a stunning collection which will be on display and for sale at Impure Art and She Said throughout May and June.

THE GREAT WALL OF VAGINA & BRIGHTON BODY CASTING Open every day throughout May. 11am – 6pm www.brightonbodycasting.com IMPURE ART Gallery and café/ bar will be open every day throughout May. 11am – 6pm www.impureart.com SHE SAID BOUTIQUE Shops open seven days.
