Be rogue in Brighton! Brogue is the magazine that digs into the city’s underground arts scene Spirit de la Mare

A new publication from the local underground arts scene has hit the streets of Brighton and Hove.

Called Brogue Magazine, it is the official organ of Brighton Arts Club, put together by the club’s members themselves. Spawned from a need to record all of Brighton Arts Club’s activities, the publication is centred on a group of working artists and the pockets of the city that inspire them.

Within the city’s perimeter, there is a fast-growing underground art movement made up of a new breed of artist: highly-motivated, highlyproductive and politicallyastute.

Gone are the alcohol-fuelled, haphazard poets, the willingly melancholy musicians, and other such tired clichés that are equally as repugnant as massproduced, faux-Banksy prints.

The resident artists at Brighton Arts Club and contributors to Brogue Magazine are embracing modernity, moving with the times, and putting in the hours.

Brogue is a platform to showcase the innovators, the grafters, and those I believe are the next generation of artists, musicians, film-makers and writers that will sculpt this city’s creative landscape in the future.

Our social care referendum proposal is a principled and heartfelt approach.”

Founded just over a year ago

by Pasha du Valentine, an artist and film-maker, Brighton Arts Club boasts a music venue, art studios, exhibition space and recording facilities; heavilydecorated with an eclectic mix of artwork. Brogue Magazine and Goddamn Media run their empires from behind its metal gates.

In a city saturated with images of deck chairs, sunsetriddled pier shots and souvenir postcards, Brighton was crying out for an underground arts magazine: a publication that rebelled against the highquality, glossy, mass-produced images, or perfectly-framed photography designed to sell houses.

Brighton has so much more to offer.

As the editor of Brogue and a Brightonian - I attended Roedean School before moving to London, working for Loaded TV, and finally returning home just over three years ago - I want readers to explore what goes on at Brighton Arts Club and beyond.

So I have joined forces with

Councillor Geoffrey Theobald, leader of the Conservative group, welcomed the debate and pledged to do his best to attend. Warren Morgan, leader of the Labour group could not be contacted, but colleagues supported the event.

The organisation representing the city’s 1,600 voluntary orgsanisations said it was “very concerned” that current proposals do not do enough to redress the cumulative impact to vulnerable communities and the local voluntary services and community groups that are a foundation of the city”.

It highlighted the possible impact on people with learning disabilities and disabled children.

Sally Polanksi, chief executive of Community Works said: “We recognise the scale of the challenge facing the city council, but we remain convinced that more creative thinking can be

The council has saved almost £30 million in efficiency programmes in the last few years and has millions more planned. But it needs to save another £100 million over the next four years - more than any efficiencies can possibly cover.

Westminster cuts can no longer be absorbed, so we are seeking a democratic opinion from local residents.

Social care makes up a third of the spending that we have control over, so we have little option but to look at ways of saving money there.

Not doing so would mean relatively small but well-used services such as libraries, children’s centres and parks would be decimated - if not completely

closed - by government cuts.

There are, of course, other areas of council spending. But there are often restrictions on how money can be spent.

For example, parking charges in the city have been frozen or reduced since 2012, and we plan to do the same again next year.

Parking income has to be spent on transport spending, and in

Award-winning photographer takes £1,000 RHS prize Greg Hadfield @BrightonIndy A Brighton-based photographer has been named by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) as the winner of its annual photographic competition.

Heather Buckley’s striking image of foxgloves in the gardens at Great Dixter House in East Sussex (see front page) was chosen from thousands of entries to win the prestigious competition – along with a prize of £1,000.

The judging panel for the RHS Photographer of the Year - comprising Clive Nichols, one of the world’s finest flower and garden photographers; Chris Young, editor of The Garden magazine; and RHS competitionorganiser Carol Sheppard - were unanimous in their praise of Ms Buckley’s work.

Chris Young said: “The quality of images submitted this year, which attracted entries from more than 40 countries, made for an enjoyable but difficult task for the judging panel. The range of images we looked at demonstrates the enthusiasm and passion that people have for capturing the beauty of the natural world.

“The winning image, which demonstrates a fusion of skilful photography, patience and

opportunity, is a perfect fit for the RHS competition, as it celebrates the essential relationship between plants and wildlife.”

Ms Buckley - director and cofounder of Silicon Beach Training - said: “It’s a great honour to be named RHS Photographer of the Year, as it’s hard to get recognised as a photographer and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to show my work to a larger audience.

“I am really a people and street photographer, but thought the competition would be a great challenge for me as I also love gardens and flowers.

“I decided to try taking some flower images in my usual street style rather than the close-up style traditionally associated with flower photography. Using a wide angle lens, in this case a fish-eye, I spent most of the afternoon trying to get this shot, taking the unusual viewpoint of looking up through the towering pink foxgloves at the bees. I finally nailed it with this image.”

The competition was open both to professional and amateur photographers who were invited to submit images to any of the six adult categories including seasons, wildlife and people, plus two categories for people under 18.

The overall winners were selected from the winning images from each of these categories

STEVE BUSTIN interviews the regular panellist on BBC Radio 4’s Gardeners’ Question Time, who will be speaking at the Seedy Sunday community seed swap in Brighton on February 2.

Is “going organic” a lifestyle choice?

Yes, very much so. And it is about a lot more than not using chemicals.

The whole point about choosing organic is that you realise you are looking for a more natural lifestyle. If you eat well, you think more clearly and do not need to constantly chase after stimulation of whatever kind. People who go organic tend to become a little calmer with the world. They get internal satisfaction!

How did you get interested in gardening – and gardening organically?

I started gardening when I was a kid, when I had gardens at all my relatives. I loved the natural world, plants, animals and being outside. I grew up very close to where the Soil Association which introduced the concept of organic gardening - was founded, a few villages away. I heard about these strange folks trying strange methods. It was like witchcraft and some local farmers treated them like lepers. Being organic was regarded as part of the lunatic fringe for a long time.

The Sleeping Army seeks to waken new generation to joys of reading Laura Lockington

The idea behind Young City Reads is a very simple one: one city, one book, a thousand c o n ve r s a t i o n s .

The aim is to get every child reading the same book and then talking about it.

What could be better?

We know the statistics about reading; it makes you happy, it makes you smart and it helps creativity.

But we also know that if we can catch children early enough and engage them in a book that fires their imagination. They are 10 times more likely to read independently.

Brighton Festival and Collected Works Community Interest Company (CIC) - the organisation behind Brighton and Hove’s City Reads - reveals today the title selected for this year’s “big read” for children.

Stranger than Kindness

by Mark A Radcliffe You know how publishers get other famous writers or celebrities to endorse a book? I often wonder if it really helps. It depends who the other famous writer is, I suppose.

Mostly, I tend to ignore them.

But there are some names, who - if they have raved about a book - I sit up and take notice of.

Jo Brand is one of them. She describes this book as “Funny, poignant and compelling”. And, oh boy, is she right!

This is such a warm and intelligent book, you will want to linger over the pages, making it last as long as possible.

It tells the tale of Adam Sands, a psychiatric nurse who works in a soon-to-be-closed asylum, so that the patients can be returned into the real world by the powers that be.

Set in 1989, the hoo-ha of Care in the Community has raised its ugly head - and Adam feels powerless to turn the tide.

Adam is struggling: a little booze, a few mild sedatives pinched from the drugs trolley, and a strong unshakeable belief in the command of being kind to others, he forms a special bond with an elderly inmate, Libby.

He deals with unspeakable do-gooders, power-mad doctors, severe cuts, disturbed patients and the strains and stress of such a demanding job with wisdom, insight and a bang on the money humour.

I urge you to read it. You really will not be disappointed.

An Independent View The poverty in our politics – and the poverty in our city There are good reasons not to increase council tax.

It is a regressive tax, with bandings based on property values as long ago as 1991. Its impact is disproportionately severe on the less-well-off. Therefore, any increase may be felt most acutely by some of the poorest families and individuals - in a city where the average price of a home is now nearly £300,000.

The multi-millionaire in the multi-million-pound house might complain about handing over more than £2,500 a year. But she probably does not find it as painful as the hard-working parent in a run-of-the-mill “Band D” home - who pays not much less, with a bill of more than £1,500 a year.

The 175 householders in Brighton and Hove who live in “Band H” luxury might object to paying an extra £10 a month to help fund public services they think - wrongly, as it happens they do not use or benefit from; even the 7,000 in “Band G’ and “Band F” homes might agree.

Theirs, of course, is not the “costof-living crisis” we hear so much about.

Indeed, in the world of dogwhistle politics, the only cost-ofliving crisis we are really meant to be concerned about is our own.

And who of us is not facing such a crisis?

Even those living in a house now worth £500,000 or more can convince themselves they cannot afford an extra £6 a month on an annual council tax bill of £1,842.

We can all be convinced that council tax is unfair – especially by politicians who want our vote. Even more if we are among the 70% who live in homes in the lowest three council tax bands.

We all try to clutch ever more tightly to the pound coins in our pockets, the pounds that are going to go to “the council”, to “them”, to be spent on others not as deserving or as needy as us.

At the same time, we argue justifiably - that public services can be delivered more efficiently and more effectively. Always.

In terms of revenue, central government has determined our elected city leaders cannot raise council tax beyond 2% without the cost - and confusion - of a referendum. And there is talk that this threshold may even be reduced to 1.5%.

It is worth reminding ourselves of previous increases in the council tax in Brighton and Hove in recent years - when the tax was just as regressive and the cost-ofliving crisis for poor people was just as acute.

The biggest increase was 14.5% in 2003-4. More recently, the increases have been: 4.8% in 2005-6 and 4.9% in 2006-7 (both Labour); 4.8% in 2007-8, 3.9% in 2008-9, 3.5% in 2009-10, and 2.5% in 2010-11 (all Conservative); a freeze in 2011-12 and in 2012-13; and 2% last year.

There is not space here to rehearse the years of havering and wavering of Labour politicians,

who have repeatedly wished the ends, but have not always been prepared boldly to will the means.

Now is decision time. The suggested referendum on a proposed 4.75% tax rise will almost certainly not happen; Labour and Conservative councillors seem determined to unite to make sure of that.

The current politicking is all about next year’s citywide elections.

Even if the referendum were to go ahead – which it could, if only Labour were to abstain in next month’s key votes - it is unlikely to be won by the minority Green administration.

It could, however, enable Labour to put a marker down about what sort of party it now is.

Too many politicians wish the ends but are not brave enough to will the means.

There may be good reasons not to increase council tax. But political expediency and selfinterest should not be among them.

Students stand against apathy with voter-registration push Sapphire Allard @sapphireallard Sussex University will hold a week of events on campus to mark the first National Voter Registration Day (NVRD) on Wednesday, February 5.

NVRD is organised by Bite the Ballot, a politically-neutral social enterprise on a mission to empower young voters.

Bite the Ballot’s primary aim is to register and engage the four million young people before the next general election who are currently not registered or represented, those who are the farthest away from politics.

The events on campus will include a talk from a representative from each political party in Brighton and Hove, who will be coming into the students’ union common room at different times for an informal chat with the students about their individual policies, particularly those affecting young people.

There will be additional talks from relevant bodies such as The Democratic Society, a themed debate held by the Sussex Student’s Debating Society, and live music from students.

Most crucially, on February 5, there will be a stall set up on where

students can complete an simple form there and then, making them eligible to vote. This is a process that can otherwise seem overlycomplicated, especially with the advent of Individual Electoral Registration, which means that head of households and university halls will no longer register young people to vote, a factor meaning the democratic deficit is at risk of increasing even more.

The number of those aged 24 years and under who vote has fallen in the last decade to the point at which only 44% voted in the 2010 election. In the United Kingdom, only 12% of young people are certain to vote at the next general election.

This silence is interpreted purely as apathy, whereas I believe the idea of “apathy” among students is something of a myth. Students, particularly at Sussex University, are notoriously political; events such as the university fee protests shows that they are willing to stand up and act.

The issue is voting - when young people often feel there is nobody to vote for. Just being registered to vote means we are sending a message out to politicians that we exist and matter. If we saw a massive increase in young people registered, this would have to

influence the slant of politicians’ manifestoes, to make them more relevant for this age-group.

Celebrities backing Bite the Ballot’s work include Jamal Edwards, founder of SB.TV; Tinie Tempah, the rapper; Eliza Doolittle, the singer; Ben Hanlin, the ITV2 magician; and the YouTubers,

Tyrannosauruslexx and Beckie0.

Edwards says: “I don’t really know that much about politics, but when I met with Bite the Ballot, it made me want to get involved and I saw politics in a different light.

“I have a huge following of young people and I feel it’s part of my job to inform these young people in a

cool informative way about politics and to tell them they be in control of their own future and that is everything to me.”

Flying pigs and white elephants: The i360 sums simply do not add up Mike Holland @RealMikeHolland

It’s true: pigs do fly! Or, more accurately, it is common sense that flies - right out of the town hall windows.

Yes, it’s official: the ruling junta has announced its intention to seek cross-party backing to donate – sorry, lend - £36 million to fund fully the Marks Barfield white elephant, otherwise known as the i360.

It seems, according to our heroes, this madcap scheme will directly provide 150 muchneeded jobs - with another 440 more locally.

Apparently, there will be 800,000 visitors a year, which they estimate will boost the local economy by an estimated £5 million.

But, dear councillors, please do the maths. Which, common sense tells me, cannot differ greatly from my calculations as follows.

Let’s be really optimistic and say running 12 hours a day for

365 days a year, the take-up at weekends and on Bank Holidays means we are absolutely rammed to capacity - ie 2,400 people a day. They have all managed to park, having saved up to pay the ridiculous parking charges, and are coming time and time again to go up in the air and see the sea. We have charged them all £10 each so a family of four is paying £40. (I did say let’s be optimistic).

So, that’s £24,000 a day summer and winter - for 112 days, ie a revenue of £2,688,000.

Then, let’s say that during

The wage bill will amount to about £3 million a year. Then, we have running costs at, let’s say, £1 million a year. Let’s then allow for advertising, ticket sale charges, bank charges, and so on, at, say, another £1 million.

This brings our running costs to about £5 million, against a dream “California” income of

£5,284,800.

Oh no, sorry, I almost forgot: 20% of that dream income was VAT, so we are now losing about £1 million. That is, of course, if Marks Barking never repays us a penny in either capital or interest.

And that’s if we have California weather from here on in.

Come on, it’s not rocket science.

We simply do not need any white elephants on our seafront.

A Week in the City Research

The patients should already be on treatment for hypertension and be aged from 55 to 80. Those joining the clinical trials will be asked to turn up for five hospital appointments in a month. Two of the appointments will involve a two-night stay.

A busy road in the centre of Brighton was closed after a pensioner was knocked down by a lorry. The 89-year-old pedestrian was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Kemptown after the collision, which happened at about 4.20pm on Wednesday.

The pensioner suffered a serious leg injury in the accident. The collision happened in West Street, between the corner of Grenville Street, leading to the entrance to the Churchill Square car park, and Duke Street.

A fire started in the bedroom of a Hove nursing home in the early hours of yesterday (Thursday). East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said that the blaze was reported just after 4.40am. It started in a bin in a resident’s room at the Asher Nursing Home in Wilbury Gardens, near Hove Recreation Ground, and was believed to have been caused by cigarette ash setting paper alight.

All members of the Brighton and Hove City Council’s senior leadership team will be asked to submit a declaration of interests, gifts and hospitality every year.

Abraham Ghebre-Ghiorghis, the council’s head of law, said that compliance was improving. He said that more publicity was being given across the council to the need to declare possible conflicts of interest as well as gifts and hospitality.

A Hove church is holding a Burns supper to raise money for repairs after a £500 was stolen and a valuable window was smashed during a break-in on Christmas Day. The fundraising dinner takes place tomorrow (Saturday) in All Saints in The Drive, Hove. The evening, including a three-course dinner, starts at 7pm with tickets costing £25.

A total of 29 students at Brighton College have been offered places at Oxford or Cambridge, the best performance in the 170-year history of the school.

Richard Cairns, the headteacher, said: “It is wonderful to see such delighted smiles on our sixthformers’ faces. It really is a superb achievement and we offer them our warmest congratulations.”

Residents are being asked to help shape the future of sexual health services in Brighton and Hove.

The city council is asking service users to share their views to help make sure the right services are in the right places and meet the needs of the local population.

The current services have been in place for many years and, with responsibility moving from NHS to the council, a review is underway.

The city council’s environment, transport and sustainability committee has given the go-ahead for a second round of consultation on a new coastal protection plan; the first round of consultation took place last summer. The council has joined forces with Adur and Worthing councils, Shoreham Port Authority, and the Brighton Marina Company.

A Brighton restaurant pleaded guilty to a charge of failing to keep its premises clean after council food safety officers discovered mouse droppings in a saucepan.

Palor Ltd, which runs the Ocean Restaurant at 43-45 Kings Road Brighton, was fined £4,000 and ordered to pay costs of £4,862.50 following a hearing at Brighton Magistrates Court.

Brighton and Hove is part of a group of “Key Cities” working together to share good practice and represent distinctive interests to central government. The group’s manifesto launch was in Westminster on Wednesday. Four central policy areas are: the future of city centres, devolution, skills and employment, and innovative finance.

Maggie Barradell – whose husband is former chief executive of Brighton and Hove City Council – has been selected as a Labour candidate in the party stronghold of East Brighton in next year’s council elections. Labour leader Warren Morgan and former leader Gill Mitchell have also been selected. Meanwhile, Councillor Leigh Farrow, a Labour councilor in Moulsecoomb and Bevendean, is appealing against his failure to make it onto the party’s list of possible candidates.

Sussex Police and RISE, the domestic abuse charity, are joining together to offer a new drop-in “surgery”, with the support of Brighton and Hove City Council. From January 22, the surgery will be available at the customer centre at Hove Town Hall, every Wednesday from 9am to noon.

A Hove business run by disabled workers has celebrated its latest success as a disabled man from Brighton has left for a cash-andcarry store. Joe Wadmore joined Able and Willing, at the Knoll Business Centre in Old Shoreham Road, Hove, four months ago.

He has now moved from the supported business for people with disabilities to a full-time job at Bestways Cash and Carry store in Hollingbury.

Clive Bonny @CliveBonny The proposed 600 foot high “i360” viewing tower is back in the news.

Business investors are pulling out from their offer of about £15 million and the city council is now considering increasing the public borrowing loan from £14 million to £36 million to pay for the tower. They hope to create 150 jobs and attract 800,000 visitors.

But local tax payers have concerns. The mostly empty Brighton Wheel next to the pier does not attract enough visitors to pay its way. If the i360 operators go bust, the taxpayers pick up the bill, and the loan payments are due from taxpayers for more than 20 years. Taxpayers are already worried by reductions in vital local services and increases in council tax. Not many want a £36 million Albatross round the neck for 20 years. Many local folk want much smaller investments

to conserve existing Heritage site attractions.

The Volks Railway could be extended for less than £1 million to link the Marina which needs more trade. Beacon Hill, overlooking the Marina, offers spectacular views across the Downs to Bognor, the Isle of Wight and to Beachy Head.

The disused golf cabin next to the Smock Windmill is next to a 40 acre nature reserve protecting rare plants and birds.

It can be converted into a wild life interpretation centre to attract our local children and tourists to admire our real-life attractions and learn about our fascinating local heritage. The cabin conversion cost is less than £36,000 and could attract many people interested in wildlife, history, and conservation.

How about retaining £36 million for essential local services and spending £36,000 instead.

The prize draw actually took place on the upper deck of the bus, and after the winner was chosen, Jill Humphrey telephoned the lucky shopper, who agreed to have her cheque delivered straight away to her home in Coldean.

Masterplan for Royal Pavilion Estate could boost city economy by £6m a year and provide 116 extra jobs The team behind a masterplan for Brighton’s Royal Pavilion Estate has spelled out the potential economic benefits to the city if the £35 million overhaul goes ahead.

Brighton Dome & Brighton Festival and the Royal Pavilion and Museum are confident the project will have a major impact on the local economy through helping to develop, deepen and broaden the city’s cultural tourism offer and through increasing visitor spend within the cultural quarter and the city centre.

They insist it will also: ■ Enhance the city’s distinctive destination and lifestyle offer.

Therefore, quality of place matters and investment in Brighton and Hove’s assets and infrastructure needs to continue, to reflect the importance of culture, leisure and tourism; ■ Develop the city’s tourism profile. Brighton has a substantial tourism market. Strategically, it is looking for more sophisticated interventions designed to help reshape and reconfigure the tourism profile to encourage longer stays

and higher spend. Having an improved world-class cultural and heritage destination at the heart of the city will act as a key driver for this process.The project aim is to increase the number of high-spending visitors who can be described as “purposeful” cultural tourists - those who come to Brighton specifically for the cultural and heritage offers; ■ Revitalisation of the Royal Pavilion Estate. A number of surveys and footfall counts from April to October 2013 showed an estimated 4.9 million people annually on or around the estate.

Analysis indicates that about one tihrd of Brighton’s 8.5 million visitors annually pass by the estate at some point in their visit; ■ Visitors to the Royal Pavilion Estate will increase. The number of annual visitors that formally engage with the estate is currently 1.32 million. Successfully securing funding for the project will engage another 268,000, to bring the total up to 1.59 million – a growth of 20%; ■ There is the potential of more jobs and opportunities

The goal is a single, coherent and connected estate

for Brighton and Hove. Early indications are that expenditure by increased visitor numbers to the estate could increase additional economic benefits by around £6 million and support another 116 jobs. The construction phase of the project could provide 277 construction jobs on a total construction cost of £21.8 million with an estimated 44 construction apprenticeships being created.

Additionally, the scheme is

expected to act as a catalyst for the creation of 60 new creative and cultural apprenticeships across the estate and 150 accredited training places for volunteers from currently under-represented communities.

Andrew Comben, chief executive of Brighton Dome & Brighton Festival, said: “The project will make the estate financially sustainable for the long-term and give a significant boost to Brighton

and Hove’s economic, tourism and cultural aspirations.

“The Royal Pavilion Estate’s current economic impact to the city is around £62 million per year and our two organisations employ over 370 people. Our initial work shows that increased visitor numbers to the estate would increase economic benefits to the city by around £6 million per year and support another potential 116 jobs.”

in a large, soft and glazed bun that could withhold the collection of fillings without falling apart.

Thirdly? The fries. Easily the best I have had in Brighton by a long shot. Served piping hot, these fried thins of potato were golden, crunchy and sprinkled in a magical rosemary and salt pairing, making incredibly more-ish.

Coupled with a well-balanced quantity of fillings, of which the whiskey BBQ sauce stood out as being sweet and smokey without overpowering the burger. Encased

Could this really be the best new burger in town? I certainly think so. The duo are humble, knowledgeable and immediately likeable and seem to have found the quintessential Brighton boozer to trade from.

Syrah is responsible for some of the darkest and most full-bodied red wines in the world.

Lifestyle A hidden gem found in the centre of Brighton Mark Ansell

I was very fortunate to be invited to experience some of the treatments on offer at The Beauty Rooms, tucked away in the beautiful Hilton Brighton Metropole hotel.

As you enter the reception area you are instantly welcomed with an aroma of relaxation, tranquil music softly playing and a greeting with a smile.

The Beauty Rooms have been here in Brighton for over 23 years, with eight treatment rooms and a nail bar with two Manicure and two Pedicure stations.

I was booked to have a Full Body Swedish Massage, with

my partner having a Thalgo Prescription Facial.

I was invited into one of the treatment rooms by Olga, who was delightfully friendly and welcoming. This was the first time I’ve ever had a professional massage so I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. Olga was sure to clear any doubts and explained the treatment she was about to perform. The Full Body Swedish Massage is carried out with Thalgo aromablended oils, it focuses on any tension areas, relieves muscular aches and pains, aids relaxation and improves circulation and lymphatic draining. My particular area of concern were my shoulders, as I sit at a desk on my computer for far too many

Do not get in a froth with one of the biggest baddies on the block I realise that some of you are not rushing to replenish the smellies - because it seems like the longest-ever wait until payday.

So, I’m still reinforcing the naturals hardline, while it rains in the dark and you struggle to finish off that Lily of the Valley talc than Nan gave to you for Christmas.

“SLS” is one of the biggest baddies on the block, and this ingredient really deserves an immediate swerve.

Sodium laureth sulfate (SLS) and sodium lauryl ether sulfate (SLES) -are widely-used anionic detergents in soaps, shampoos, and toothpaste.

SLS can irritate your skin, causing inflammation (dermatitis) symptoms include dryness, coarseness and redness.

Holland and Barrett say it like it is in their blurb for Dr Organic: ‘In the same way it dissolves the grease on car engines, sodium lauryl sulphate also dissolves the oils on your skin, which may potentially cause more serious

hours of the day and find they become naturally tense. After explaining this, Olga focused on the tension areas and it was incredible how much it helped.

The whole experience was deeply relaxing from start to finish, the treatment rooms are beautifully ornate, and the staff couldn’t do enough. I left the room not only feeling extremely relaxed, after very nearly falling asleep, but my shoulders felt significantly less tense which reverberated throughout my entire body.

Whilst I was receiving the massage, my partner experienced the Thalgo Prescription Facial.

This treatment is tailored to suit any needs or concerns, such as radiance boosting, deep cleansing, hydrating, nourishing and soothing The therapist, Alice, started with a thorough consultation to find any concerns my partner had with her skin. Her skin was then deeply cleansed and exfoliated to remove any dirt or impurities along with any dead or dry skin cells – this allows all the following products to work into the new skin cells and leaves the skin amazingly soft and glowing.

A Reviving Marine Mist was then used, which acts as a magnet to help draw all the products deeper into the skin before starting a relaxing facial massage. During

the massage, Alice focused on the face, neck and décolleté, top of the arms, back of the neck and top of the shoulders. This massage focuses on improving the skins texture, helps to relieve stress and tension, aids lymphatic draining and circulation, this will also help to plump out any fine dehydrations lines. After the facial massage, a treatment mask was applied – whilst the mask was working in, she then performed a relaxing hand massage and then the treatment was ended by toning the skin followed by an eye cream and moisturiser.

The Beauty Rooms also have some fantastic products on sale, which doubled up nicely as a Christmas present; especially due to the fact I’d left it until the last minute. I purchased some Thalgo products, a French brand full of natural sea nutrients and minerals. Their range includes a Freshness Exfoliator and Moisture Quenching Mask.

Overall I could not rate The Beauty Rooms higher, the treatments on offer are extensive

health risks.”

Inexpensive foaming agents are used for their cleansing and emulsifying properties; they behave like soap. Thickening and lathering are prized in brand advertising, but foaming does not improve the ability to clean. It is added only for visual reasons.

Some products containing SLES also contain traces of 1,4-dioxane. The Unite States Environmental Protection Agency classifies 1,4-dioxane to be a probable human carcinogen and a known irritant.

Under Proposition 65, 1,4-dioxane is classified in California to cause cancer.

Somehow, I don’t feel very soft and silky about this ingredient.

In shampoo, SLS strips grease from the hair by corrosion and makes the product spread out and penetrate.

It enters the skin very easily and is transported through the

bloodstream. SLS/SLES builds up in the heart, liver, lungs, brain and eyes. It can be retained in tissues for a long time and could cause a long list of other adverse effects.

Fortunately, Aubrey Organics use liquid coconut oil in soaps and shampoos, and coconut fatty acids and essential fatty acids in creams and lotions.

So I will be reviewing a selection of these next month, along with delicious naturals by Tisserand, Smiths of Jersey, and Barefoot SOS. The Ecologist has named Aubrey one of the best non-toxic and petrochemical-free brands.

Personally, I find it hard to disagree with their simple philosophy: “Why use something synthetic when something natural works so much better?”

Nissan’s new Qashqai manages to improve on their very successful The original is a very hard act to follow as it started a trend for crossovers that is still flourishing.

As Nissan point out, the year after the Qashqai launch in 2007, they had one competitor. Now there are 14, with more on the way.

It’s a bit like the second album - how do you get it right? It is the kind of dilemma that a lot of manufacturers would like to have but, nevertheless, it comes with its own problems. Nissan wanted to retain the key aspects of the first generation that made the Qashqai so desirable, yet produce a recognisably different product that the market woullove equally.

They asked their customers and came up with a threepronged plan for their 2014 car - improved design, a more luxurious feel and better fuel economy and lower emissions. The new Qashqai is a big, handsome beast. It is longer, wider and lower, with sleeker lines along the side and a fetching deep V shape at the nose that will become a signature on Nissan vehicles.

The wide stance gives it extra presence on the road and the kind of sporty stability customers look for. Inside, there is a definite feeling of quality and the NASAinspired seats are extremely comfortable. Sensibly, there is a reversible boot area that creates a wipe-down wet zone for muddy sports kit.

Technology includes the ability to download apps and a raft of safety features. There is also the possibility to personalise your Qashqai by specifying how heavy you’d like the steering to be, for example, or how you’d like the lights to operate. Most of the techy stuff is operated from a seven-

inch touchscreen and you can even connect to the apps through your smartphone.

Nissan say their target was to ensure the drive was comfortable, confident and secure, while offering dynamic performance. So they have engineered Active Trace Control, Active Ride Control and Engine Braking, which they say will make the Qashqai safer on corners and limit pitching on the road.

The best-seller will doubtless be the 1.5-litre diesel with a sixspeed manual gearbox. Although there is little to fault with the

1.2-litre petrol engine and 1.6-litre diesel Xtronic automatic.

There will also be a 1.6-litre petrol engine later in the year. So have Nissan created the second generation Qashqai they were looking for? Yes, I think they have.

It is a super, big, urban warrior and they have certainly raised the luxury quotient.

The all-new model goes on sale on February 1, 2014. Prices and specification are yet to be confirmed, but you can expect a small increase over the current car, which is priced from £16,895 to £27,650.

To integrate the “fartlek” method into your weekly fitness schedule, try these simple steps: ■ Find a long street with lampposts (for example, the west side of Preston Park); ■ Sprint to one lamp-post; ■ Jog to the other; ■ Continue this repetition for 10 to 15 minutes; ■ Return home safely.

Returning players to boost Oscar’s attacking options Richard Morris

Oscar Garcia has been buoyed by the return to training of two of the Albion’s long-term injured strikers.

Will Hoskins, who has been plagued with injuries since arriving from Bristol Rovers for around £650,000 ahead of the Seagulls’ first season at The Amex, is expected to return to the training ground action earlier this week – three months earlier than expected.

And Scotland striker Craig Mackail-Smith, who has been out since aggravating his Achilles during a match with Bristol City last term, edged closer to long-awaited return to first team action by stepping back into full training.

The news will be a boost to an Albion squad which has been decimated by injuries this season – with a host of key players missing significant chunks of the current season. Those problems

have hamstrung Oscar’s efforts to establish his Brighton team at the top end of the Championship but the Spaniard has been widely praised for getting his team to seventh despite the injury crisis.

And, having missed out on Lewis Grabban – who opted to sign a new contract at Bournemouth rather than join the Albion – the return of Mackail-Smith and Hoskins cannot come quickly enough for a Brighton team lacking a cutting edge in recent weeks.

Wingers Kazenga Lua Lua and Will Buckley are also showing signs of a return to full fitness after the pair fell foul of hamstring injuries.

Buckley, who has again been linked with a move to Sunderland this week, has not played since the Albion triumphed away to Blackpool back in December, while Lua Lua – who had been in superb form – was forced to sit out last weekend’s defeat at Derby County.

Oscar Garcia will almost certainly rotate some of his squad for tomorrow’s trip to Port Vale – although the Albion head coach will be mindful of the financial boost a cup run could provide.

More than 1,000 fans are expected to head to the Potteries hopeful of seeing the Seagulls progress to the fifth round of the FA Cup and a possible moneyspinning glamour time.
