WestAid A Grocery Store Like No Other A

ccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, 46.2 million Americans live in poverty, the highest number in the 52 years since poverty estimates have been calculated. On the west side of Fort Worth, those statistics come to life in the form of dozens of working poor, who stroll the well-stocked aisles of WestAid every day, collecting nonperishable food and personal items needed to fill empty cupboards. “For many working people, some of whom hold down two or three jobs, the dollar doesn’t quite make it to the end of the month,” said Erik Gronberg, pastor at Trinity Lutheran Church and longtime supporter of WestAid. “When you are working for $8-$10 an hour and paying for rent and gasoline, you simply don’t have enough money for groceries for your family.” WestAid, which recently moved to 7940 Camp Bowie West, has been serving the community for 12 years. Its new location is closer to many lower-income apartments where clients live, and it is now on a bus route, making transportation easier for all of its clients. The move also created an opportunity to design a new space that looks more like a grocery store than a food bank. “It creates the feeling that they are in a grocery store, and that gives

our families a little more dignity,” said Debbie Friemel, president of the WestAid board of directors. This nonprofit organization serves people in need who live in southwest Tarrant County, specifically in ZIP codes 76107, 76116, 76126, 76008 and 76109 west of Bryant Irvin Road. Last year, the volunteers and its three-member staff provided groceries to make more than 16,000 meals. During the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, WestAid provided for 70 or 80 meals a day. Supporters include more than a dozen churches of all faiths and a wide range of corporations, individuals, foundations and nonprofit groups like the Tarrant Area Food Bank. Increased demand means a need for more volunteers and more food donations, Friemel said.

Kidmia Makes Home a Priority I

n September 2010, Semeret, a seven-month-old girl, was brought to the Kidmia Foundation’s Child Transition Center in Ethiopia. Her grandmother was too poor to feed her, so the little girl was chronically ill and malnourished. Yet, in time, with food and medical care, the little girl recovered, but she and millions of other Ethiopian orphans and neglected children faced an uncertain future. Thanks to a group of passionate people raising money in Fort Worth, Semeret’s future is now much brighter. For more than two years Semeret lived with other children at the Kidmia Center in the town of Gunchire. The center provided her food, clothing, health care, education, and social and psychological development. Last November, Kidmia did even more. Adopting the philosophy that teaching a man to fish is better than giving him a fish to eat, Kidmia gave Semeret’s grandmother a dairy cow and taught her modern dairy farming practices. The cow made the difference. The grandmother was able to generate enough income from the cow to bring Semeret home. Kidmia, which means “priority,” offers a multifaceted approach to solving the Ethiopian orphan crisis. It promotes both adoption by other Ethiopian families and the reunification for the child with the natural family. It works to overcome a bias in Ethiopian culture against adoptions, while teaching parenting skills to couples who are willing to adopt. It also provides economic development to help Ethiopian families work their way out of poverty.

David and Amie Simpson have made several trips to Ethiopia to support Kidmia’s mission.

In addition to the children who live full time at the everexpanding center, Kidmia works with more than 170 other children who live at home, to supplement them with food, health care, education and psychological support. Leading the Fort Worth effort for Kidmia is David Simpson and his wife, Amie. The Simpsons, who are in the oil and gas business, were introduced to Kidmia two years ago when they visited Ethiopia with Scott Brown, the executive vice president of inter-country programs for the Gladney Center for Adoption. The Simpsons have since made several more trips to Ethiopia. On their first trip, the Simpsons, who have been trying for two years to adopt a child from Ethiopia, were determined “to find a place we could help,” David Simpson said. Following James 1:27, which commands Christians to help orphans, Simpson became the volunteer executive director to help with publicity and fundraising efforts in the U.S. On April 4, the organization will hold its second “For the Fatherless” fundraising dinner at the Ridgelea Country Club. kidmia.org

From Tragedy Comes Renewal O

ver six days last fall, about 450 members of Gateway Church remodeled and expanded a distressed home in what the church calls its Bless! Home Makeover program. Romeo Gomez had begun framing out an addition to his Haltom City home when he was killed in a car accident. His death left the house unfinished, and his wife, Lucia Gomez, and their three sons were struggling without him. “From everything we’ve learned about him, he was a good man and a great father to those boys,” said Troy Wierman, the pastor for global outreach for Gateway Church. The Gomez home project marked the second time the church has remodeled a home for a needy Tarrant County family. Two years ago, about 300 volunteers rebuilt the home of Robert Martinez, who so appreciated the church’s home makeover that he volunteered to work on the Gomez house. “These houses are more rewarding than any of the million-dollar homes I have built,” said Kurt Cameron, owner of Cameron Classic Homes, who

approached Wierman last year about the home makeovers. Gateway Church has more than 20,000 members, four campuses and a variety of outreach programs. Cameron thought doing home makeovers would be another way the church members could give back to their community. “We live in one of the richest cities in the nation, even the world,” Wierman said. “This keeps us from being selfcentered.” For the Gomez home, the remodel was extensive. The kitchen is where the old master bedroom was, and it has new countertops, cabinets, appliances and a pantry. All the interior walls were replaced, and Cameron’s subcontractors replaced the plumbing, rewired the house and put on a new roof.

Volunteers cleared the yard and laid down grass sod. They erected playground equipment for the boys, built a shed and constructed a pen for the two pet geese. While the work was ongoing at the Gomez house, volunteers canvassed other homes in the neighborhood to see how the church might help elsewhere. In a series of “mini-makeovers,” church volunteers painted and repaired homes owned by elderly widows, even installing a wheelchair ramp at one house. “My heart hurts because I don’t know how to say thank you to everyone who helped,” Lucia Gomez said after seeing the result of the group’s work. “Everything is so beautiful.” gatewaypeople.com
