Weddings are expensive enough...
Communication. Always clear and always documented, a text reply to a facebook post which was a comment about a phone call is no use to anyone. Write it, Print it, Keep it. Honesty. Both sides need to be clear about what they need, when they need it and what they will do to fulfil their side of the bargain. Flexibility. Life inflicts change upon us. Sometimes plans need to change. Wedding suppliers should have a contingency, always drop in the question “what happens if you are in a car crash the day before the wedding”. If they have to think...leave and find someone with a plan. Pricing. An open and upfront price is never a rip off, you can accept, look around or negotiate. The cheapest is NEVER worth the money. Agree a price for a service and stick to both. Contracts. A long ten page contract is never there to protect YOU. Read it all or walk away and find someone sensible. Payments. No-one EVER needs 100% deposit a year before the wedding, 10-15% is normal, balances 6 weeks before is fair, always get some form of receipt.

Once you remove the expectations of your family from the plans, you are free to rip up the rule book, those little unspoken family rules about who you MUST invite, where you MUST have the ceremony and why you can’t do this or must never do that. Your mum had her wedding, she doesn’t need to control a second one. This is YOUR wedding, this is 2019, the world is your oyster, the beach is your chapel! Except…
Gay Tips for a Straight Wedding.
efore everyone condemns me as a raving homophobe, stuck in the 1970’s let me start by saying that since 1983 I’ve attended well over 1000 weddings, of those only about 20 were “Civil Partnerships” or more recently single-gender marriages. So what tips for the majority of weddings will come from those few events? Bizarrely, quite a few!
The guests are not there to witness your day, they are there to take part in it and the Gay weddings I’ve attended have been every bit as much about the guests as the couple. A real celebration of community, sparkling entertainment planned to create a show. Partially rehearsed speeches with love and humour in the right balance.
The one thing you are pretty much guaranteed at a single gender wedding reception, is a happy upbeat, memorable event that people want to be at. We’ve all been to a wedding where we’ve felt left out of it, that we were just there because the happy couple felt they ought to invite us, where perhaps we were just observers of a day with no consideration for us, just a massive ego boost for a bride, a groom, or worse, a brides parents. I can say with all honesty that every “Gay” wedding I’ve attended, either as a DJ or a wedding car owner, has been fun, and inclusive, and as far as I can make out, the two underlying reasons are fairly simple…
Knowing your guests and the things they like is the best wedding present you can give yourself, included guests and full audience participation is the way to go! Four hours of mad, crammed in fun, cocktails and cheesy dance music, streamers, balloons and glow sticks, fish and chip suppers and hugs from friends OR, 12 hours of trying to impress virtual strangers who happen to be related.
High on the list is family pressure. It’s not easy to say to mum “I’m not doing that just because you did it” but she’ll soon get over it when she sees you glow, blossom and celebrate on your own unique wedding day.
“Doing things just to make my Dad happy went out of the window when I came out of the closet”

Oh, it used to be so simple, it was the back room of the pub, the club or the village hall. So many venues—so many promises—so many deals to be had. Here are my top 5 tips for finding the venue that suits you and your guests and remember, sometimes, walking away is the most positive thing to do. 1.
Location is essential, Is it easy to get to and get a taxi home from? Many really lovely out of town venues just too far for your guests to travel and the further out a venue is, the more no-shows you’ll get.
When you walk in off the street with no appointment are you greeted, or met with a frosty stare of a smile? A warm efficient service from staff is important and how they deal with minor hiccups is key.
Is it too big? A cosy reception venue is always a better atmosphere that a huge spacious, half empty room.
What are the bar prices like? If the guests are frightened to order another Pepsi for the kids or another pint, it won’t be much of a party later on. A good venue bar will always be 10-15% up on price, any more than that and you really need to consider your guests’ pockets.
What will they let you do, what do they insist on doing “in-House” and what can you not do? Get it in writing and see how it fits with your plans. No decent venue will lose business over a chair cover or your own preferred DJ but many shoddy ones use the backhanders from “preferred” suppliers as managers perks. Hidden costs like these can really harm your pocket! Merv Sheldon
Quite a few venue dressers have them, Paul has a choice of colours and styles .

Historical Venues Walk to the wedding in the footsteps of Mary, Queen of Scots
Alfreton Hall 01773 838300 At 300 years old, Alfreton Hall has stood proud overlooking the valley and the ancient ruins of Wingfield Hall and the hunting grounds of the Cromwells. 100 years of mixed fortunes and some very dodgy owners ended around the turn of this century when the current owners took on a long plan of investment and care in this beautiful manor house. Alfreton Hall is an exclusive wedding venue with just 9 bedrooms, a lovely, cool ceremony room and history in every nook and cranny. Wheelchair accessible, great parking and flexible food options make this a real winner with brides looking for style and class without selling the family dog to pay for it.
Tutbury Castle 01283 812129 With 950 years of overlooking Derbyshire and East Staffordshire, when you say “I Do at Tutbury castle you will be doing so in a place visited by Kings, Queens and the most famous of prisoners, Mary Queen of Scots. Owned by our own Queen Elizabeth II and leased long term to a passionate historian, the castle, much of which was dismantled after the civil war, still stands tall as a partial ruin leaving just the Great Hall as a ceremony room and the grounds where the smart wedding marquee hosts the evening reception. No bedrooms, thanks to Oliver Cromwell, but space enough for glamping and the local hotels are but a short walk away in historic Tutbury. Close to the A50, A38 and with good parking, the castle is amazingly quiet and private.

A favourite of mine is to actually ask someone how they suppose you feel about an issue.

Why Wedding Stationary is Going Nowhere! The quick guide to effective invitations. First thing to say here is “first impressions really count, I often wonder when I see an online supplier offering “Stationary” or “Invites”, if they apply the same rules of spelling and grammar to YOUR Stationery (with an “e” for envelope) and Invitations. Rule 1 then is to get a stationer with a brain, who can spell.
Wedding Stationery is one of the simplest things to really set your day apart, it’s really easy to get right and done well, it’s the best way to ensure that your wedding has no nasty surprises such as empty chairs, unwanted guests and catering misunderstandings.
Invitations traditionally come from the parents of the groom but are paid for by the parents of the bride! Most nowadays come from the couple. Your printer will advise you on the wording, but it is here where you state your preferences “Smart attire please” “Children welcome to the reception” and you ask for a response by putting RSVP. Remember, you need two different ones and they need to be clear, some will have the “Ceremony and the day of celebrations”, Some will have the “Ceremony and return at 8pm for the wedding reception” They need to have Dates, times, locations and an easy reply method. A popular thing to do is enclose a reply card where the guest can list dietary needs or if they can onlt make part of the day.

My Name is Merv Sheldon and I really hate liars and scammers, so be sure that when someone tells me lies, or lets me down, they don’t stand at my wedding fayres. The rest of us believe that a wedding is the most important event in a couple’s life and as much as we need the income, the real benefit is being a part of it.

This little bride guide has grown over the last 5 years and I hope that tucked away somewhere is a gem of wisdom that you are able to use for your own magical, wonderful wedding day, my best tip though is right here, in Pink. Steal the best ideas, laugh at the worst but more than anything, make YOUR wedding day yours. You are NOT a production line bride, don’t accept a production line wedding.
A Massive thanks to Lenka and Mark for years of help with this booklet (streamline press ROCKS!) Thanks to the Bridefayre Team— Claire (doors) Jess (doors) Trevor (Roadie and Hospitality) and Jenny (my wife of 32 years) We really do love weddings!
