LINENS DESTINATION WEDDING

H

ave you thought about linen? Great for hot destinations like Mexico, or Florida. Linen is made from flax, which is a natural material very light weight and incredibly breathable. Also, being a natural material causes it to be particularly beneficial for men that suffer from allergies and who may react to synthetic fabrics or dyes. Linen shirts are a popular choice for warm weather because the material is light and fluid. It is also absorbent and wicks moisture away from your body. Linen suits and shirts are available in a variety of sizes and colours. Custom orders are available and typically take four to six weeks to arrive.

Q&A

TOP QUESTIONS ASKED

W

hen should the bride and groom come in? Timing is the key to a great outfit. Allow yourself the time to complete your flawless look. Derks Formals recommends coming 2 to 6 months prior to your event, however we have one day express service if needed. Booking your appointment can be as easy as going on line at www.derks.ca. What is the difference between a suit and tuxedo? Tuxedo • Satin on the lapels • Satin covered buttons • Satin detailing on pockets

Suit • No satin on the lapels • Exposed buttons • No satin trim on pockets

How should my garment fit? The fit and feel is based on the body type. There are numerous brands with different fits. Classic: A comfortable looser fit in the shoulders and body, accommodates a fuller body type. Modern: Updated version of the classic cut fits closer to the body and has compressed shoulders. Slim: Sometimes referred to as the “skinny-fit”. This fit has been trimmed in all areas, as well as being shorter in length.

How do I differentiate the groom from the groomsmen attire? Today there are so many options for the grooms attire. There are no rules or guide lines that you must follow. The groom will have no problem finding just the right look to suit their personality. Going with a completely different garment is becoming more popular rather than the standard uniform look throughout. The groom can apply their unique touch with a different tie, vest or pocket square to set himself apart in the wedding photos.

How much should we budget? Derks offers a large selection for all budget types. The options are endless, from all-inclusive rental packages starting at $109, to off the rack retail suiting starting at $199 and we also offer made to measure options for a personalized look.

What if I lose weight before the wedding? Our rental garments accommodate a large range of sizes and body types. If you lose 10 pounds or more, be sure to come in and get re-measured at least a month before the wedding or special event at any of our locations. We warehouse over 30,000 garments at our Southside, Edmonton location, so we can accommodate life changes. Book your final fitting the week of the event to ensure that every attention to making you look your best, our tailors can make last minute changes; after all it’s your special day.

STORIES BEHIND

STYLE

I

t is said that in the 19th century, King Edward VII grew so round that he was actually unable to button the last button of his jacket. In efforts to not offend the king, everyone associated with him, followed suit and left their bottom buttons undone, the custom gradually spread worldwide. Fast forward to current day, suits are constructed in such a way that to ensure the proper fit and drape so that one must leave the bottom button undone.

T

he Boutonniere is a French word meaning “button hole. There are several reason why men wear flower Boutonnieres on their lapels. However pertaining to weddings, it is said to get rid of bad smells, diseases and evil spirits. Some scholars believe that the boutonniere tradition came about during the civil war days of England to help differentiate friends from enemies. Boutonnieres through tradition have always been worn on the left hand side on the jacket or above the heart. They should be worn by the groom, groomsmen, and fathers and should complement the bridal party bouquets. The men should still wear a pocket square to coordinate the rest of their accessories. Boutonnieres are not just flowers anymore; they have evolved through creativity of style to be any decoration that suits your personal style Examples: Feathers, small branches of plants, jewels, etc.

This means that a tuxedo isn’t required but the event is still formal enough for one to be appropriate. He should wear: A tuxedo or a formal dark suit and tie. She should wear: A long dress, a dressy suit, or a formal cocktail-length dress in a dark, neutral tone like brown, gray, or black. Continued on page 10
