e’ve all been there. You’re out with a group of friends and there’s always someone who just can’t get off their phone. Annoying? Yes. Rude? Oh, yes! However, as social media continues to grow in popularity it seems we can only accept and expect others to share their attention with us and their online community. So, what’s the solution when it comes to the most special day of your life – your wedding? Enter the unplugged wedding.

o, what is an unplugged wedding? An “unplugged wedding” is a wedding that restricts the use of any device that takes photos or records video. It can be as limited as unplugging the ceremony to completely unplugging the entire wedding! Unplugging can also restrict guests from posting images or video online until AFTER the wedding. Of course, this is all voluntary (unless you’re Mr. & Mrs. George Clooney!).

Now, let’s acknowledge that a fully plugged-in, hyperdocumented wedding makes perfect sense for some couples. If you announced your engagement via Facebook, post regularly on Instagram and live for social media, you should consider creating a hashtag for your wedding so that your guests’ posts can be found and shared easily. However, as I’m sure many would agree, as a social media fan – sometimes it’s important to unplug and be truly present. When you discourage devices at your wedding, you encourage your guests to look up and drink in the world! For those of us who wish to go forward with an unplugged wedding, just how can you communicate your wishes to your guests regarding their phone usage at your wedding? Well, there’s more than a few ways (that are more than polite!):
