t was February 2010 when then Stowers Principal Mrs. Eileen Bladgen reported a threat on the lives of two of her teachers by a third teacher to the sheriff. Under the law Mrs. Bladgen is obligated to report any such incident to law enforcement. Her superiors and AFT President Laura Rico told her they would take care of the matter and she didn’t have to do anything more about the incident. The District then reacted to her sheriff’s report by placing her on administrative leave for the rest of the school year, demoting her to a teaching position, and worst of all using false evidence of her incompetence to justify its action. Last month Superior Court Judge Joanne O’Donnell in Los Angeles ruled the evidence used against Mrs. Blagden to demote her was fabricated. The case now goes to a Settlement Conference on July 17. The events leading up to Blagden’s leave of absence and subsequent demotion occurred when a teacher, Kevin Kirby, ar ar-

Blagden told Kirby he should not report to his classroom due to his appear appearance and possible injuries. Kirby told her he refused medical treatment at the scene of

the accident and didn’t need a doctor. According to the sheriff’s incident report Kirby became very agitated that he was not able to go to his classroom and stated, “Nobody likes me here. Nobody loves me here. I have no friends. Maybe my accident happened this morning for a purpose. I wish I was dead.” He subse-

he Cerritos City Council gave final approval to a $119, 692,755 budget for fiscal year 2012-13 at its June 28 meeting. Councilman Mark Pulido and the other councilmembers spent an inordinate amount of time questioning why $220,000 for the Sky Knight Helicopter program was removed from the Community Safety budget. He said he understood the council has the option to restore that allocation. Pulido then made a motion that the Sky Knight program be restored. He said he feels while the sheriff department has done an outstanding job in the city there are concerns in the community about residential burglaries and the Sky Knight patrol helps provide the residents security. “I don’t want to take any action that the criminals might interpret Cerritos is open for business while the residents are sleep-

or the seven Olympic hopefuls of the La Mirada Armada Swim Team life has become a little hectic, to say the least. The U.S. Olympic Team Trials took place in Omaha, NE. this past week starting on June 25 and will culminate Monday, July 2. Each team member has been training overtime these past few weeks in the hopes of having a great Olympic trials showing. Besides the rigorous workout schedule, motivation plays a vital role in performance. We spoke with Richard Shipherd, head swimming coach of the La Mirada Armada who has coached two Olympians and helped five swimmers on to the U.S. National Teams. He was in the midst of preparing his team for one of their final workouts before the trials, but that didn’t stop him from pulling the swimmers aside individually and telling them what they needed to improve on and pumping them up for their next competition. Artesia Budget Continues Cuts to Critical Community Services

quently told Blagden he was having trouble with two other Kindergarten teachers and he hated both of them, adding, “I wish something bad would happen to them! I want to hire a hit man to kill them.” At this point the principal contacted the District office and told them what was going on. She repeated she needed help at the school and Kirby appeared suicidal and distraught and should be taken out of service,” She was told to get his union representative to her office. Short time later personnel from the District office, including Union President Laura Rico arrived along with paramedics and escorted Kirby to a medical facility. She was told by Assistant Superintendent Carol Hansen that Kirby would not be allowed to return to work without a doctor’s note Rico later informed ABC that Kirby would not be returning to work immediately and would be of work for an extended time period. Mrs. Blagden was told not to say anything else that the District would handle it from there. However, Blagden, concerned about the safety of her teachers and students, later filed a report with the sheriff. On Feb 3, Blagden was put on “indefinite” leave for disobeying orders not to say anything to anybody about the

he Artesia City Council adopted a balanced budget with total revenue for 2012-13 estimated at $7,733,755. The budget continues service cuts to the community which began in the year 2010. “Continuous state takeaways coupled with declining revenues had forced the City of Artesia to make substantial cuts to City services and programs,” said City Manager Maria Dadian. Over the last several years, there have been significant cuts to a spectrum of City services and the City has already reduced staff by 30 percent, and closed parks and City facilities one day a week. All community services have been adversely affected, including public safety, which has staffing

Vehicle Burglary: Seven vehicle bur burglaries were reported last week. An incident occurred on the 13900 block of Ramhurst Dr. A purse was stolen from the vehicle. A burglary was reported on the 13200 block of Marquardt Ave. Two cases containing bibles were taken. A stethoscope was reported stolen from a vehicle on the 14900 block of Gagely Dr. A purse was stolen from a vehicle on the 14200 block of Firestone Blvd. An incident occurred on the 15100 block of Rosecrans Ave. A laptop and purse were stolen. Two separate burglaries were also reported on the 14900 block of Rayfield Dr. and the 15000 block of Barwood Dr. Grand Theft: A grand theft incident was reported on the 15000 block of Imperial Hwy. Grand Theft Vehicle: Four stolen vehicles were reported last week. Weekly Crime Summary Part I felony crimes rose by one incident last week to 22. Commercial burglar burglaries, vehicle burglaries and vehicle thefts were higher compared to the previous week. Robberies and residential burglaries dropped. Field deputies handled 263 calls for service last week, up from 257 the week before. The current 2012 weekly average in calls for service is 266. There were no robberies investigated last week. Residential burglaries dropped from eight to three last week. Open/unlocked doors or windows were used to gain entry in one crime, and two windows were pried open. Laptop computers, cash, jewelry and electronics were taken. The 2012 weekly average in residential burglaries is now 4.5. Do you know who belongs in your neighborhood? Take some time to learn by observing the day-to-day activities. This may help you detect any obvious deviation that may indicate crime. (Suspicious people, vehicles, etc.) Four commercial burglaries were reported. Three closed businesses and a fitness center locker were targeted. Video surveillance systems, wallets, keys, tax documents, chairs and a bed were among the loss items. The 2012 weekly average in “other structure”/commercial burglaries is 1.8. Vehicle burglaries were up from five to seven last week. Five cases involved high-volume commercial parking lots. Six of the vehicles were SUVs. Laptop computers, cell phones, cameras, battery cables, purses, wallets, ID, guitars, and bowling balls were stolen. The 2012 week weekly average in vehicle burglaries is 7.6. Residents are urged to avoid leaving windows open or even “cracked” while attempting to cool an unattended vehicle.

Hawaiian Gardens Residents Celebrate July 4

arishioners and community members came with their families and friends to enjoy many different rides, games, a variety of ethnic foods and live entertainment on the church grounds at St. Irenaeus Church Fiesta in Cypress this past June 23-25. Four St. Irenaeus parishioners who won the big cash raffle prizes on the last day of the Fiesta. This is the first time that all four winners are long-time women parishioners of St. Irenaeus and all are residents of the city of Cypress. Winers were: $10,000 Grand Prize Winner, Catherine Woodington, parishioner since 1977; $3,000 First Place Winner, Sylvia Martinez, parishioner since 1969; $1,500 Second Place Winner, Kay Cane, parishioner since 1976; and $500 Third Place Winner, Virginia Kelley, parishioner since 1969. Ribbons were presented to the booth captains who decorated their booths with the California Dreamin’ theme. The winner of the Grand Prize for Booth Decoration was the Margarita Booth captained by Janet and Mario Bica. Other Booth Decoration winners included First Place, the Big Valley Booth, captained by John Elias; Second Place, was the Ministries Booth, captained by Rebecca Soto; and Third Place, the Ticket Booth #1, captained by Christine Siron. The final tally of how much was raised by the Fiesta has not been determined

yet. St. Irenaeus Church and the 2012 Fiesta Committee commended the many individuals, families and businesses who sponsored the game and food booths. They also thanked all those who donated items such as books, plants, desserts and Silent Auction items.

Residents of the Park Terrace Apartments in Hawaiian Gardens celebrated July 4 with a luncheon barbecue served in the recreation room. Losing a Job to Keep Kids Safe

It’s been over two years since I made the decision to defy a direct order from my superiors at the ABC Unified School District to keep my mouth shut about suicide and murder threats from one of my kinder kindergarten teachers. A decision that cost me my job as principal of Stowers Elementary School in Cerritos but probably saved the lives of two teachers and countless students—and I have no regrets. Schools are where our children come to grow and to learn. It is our responsibility as educators and administrators to keep their environment safe from all forms of danger—even when that danger is coming from a teacher. So when one of my kindergarten teachers—a teacher who had just returned from a leave of absence after two charges of lewd and lascivious behavior and one conviction for trespassing—came to me looking disheveled, stressed, and with blood visibly on his body, I took his threat to commit suicide and kill two of my other teachers seriously. They want sound financing, not possible funding.” So?” “So,” he replied, they finally decided to change the city’s tax laws, making Fruitcake more inviting for new business to come into the city. I just might drive down to Fruitcake.” “Let me know,” he replied, “and I’ll make sure you’re treated royally.” “Really?” “No O’Rilley,” he replied. “That’s a joke son.” “That was the first time I heard my Friend from Fruitcake, Florida crack a joke. Changing the subject he said, “I see an old ghost has come back to haunt the ABC Unified School District.”

“You’re talking about the Superior Court ruling that the District’s demotion of the Stowers Elementary School Principal in 2010 was based on fraudulent evidence.” “That’s right.” “We’ll I think the problem is about how too many of our education systems, whether they be school districts or higher education institutions, have lost perspective. They rather cover up or sweep under the rug things they don’t want the public to see. In this case the teacher involved, a 16 year employee who had problems from the day he was hired. Instead of dealing with it, the District transferred him from one school to another. Finally, he appar apparently cracked and made threats against two teachers who he said hated him and wanted to hire someone to kill them. “And?” my Friend from Fruitcake, Florida asked, “And, they tried to cover the incident up, by making an example of the Principal because she did the right thing and reported the incident to the police. She said she had a responsibility to protect her students and teachers from possible harm. “She did the right thing,” my Friend From Fruitcake, Florida said. “I would have done the same thing.” He paused a moment, “ It’s like I said. To many of our officials are afraid of “making waves on their lake,” instead of doing what is right. Well, I have to go, “I’m going to a July 4 celebration and celebrate what this country was founded upon.

tary School and Jerry Sandusky sex abuse scandals coupled with the Columbine, Vir Virginia Tech, and Seal Beach tragedies, none of us entrusted with the safety of children can afford to guess at the genuineness of the threat when danger presents itself. I never expected that my actions would have resulted in my demotion back to teacher and banishment from Stowers as well as the school district offering the teacher who made the threats a cash settlement to leave quietly. I expected the school district to back me up, notify the local authorities, and to keep the safety of the children and staff as their number one priority. But they didn’t, and now two years later, after much speculation and whisper whispering, I am finally breaking my silence as I prepare to move forward to vindicate my name, reputation, and actions on that day in a court of law. The recent decision by an Assembly committee to reject a bill that would have protected students from sexual predators, further reminds us all that something is seriously wrong when we, as adults, can’t take the steps needed in order to protect children and allow the process to do just the opposite—leave our children vulner vulnerable to random attacks from mentally unstable teachers. Union regulations and the “politically

correct” have paved the way for situations where you can have a kindergarten teacher in the classroom with students who at the same time is banned from all public places, including parks, beaches, and libraries after 6 p.m. in Long Beach. I am not an activist. I am an educator. I don’t consider what I did as whistle blowing. I considered myself taking the appropriate actions to protect hundreds of kids and dozens of teachers who might have been lost in the crossfire had that teacher taken action on his threats. If I had it to do all over again, I wouldn’t change anything that I did because at the end of the day, it’s our job to keep schools safe—even from the dangers within. If through the shame, hurt, and humiliation I have suffered as a result of all of this has to be the catalyst through which we start to have honest and real conversations about school safety, then let’s start talking. Kreimann Admits Lack of Qualifications; Slams LCCN in Taped Address to Employees By Randy Economy and Brian Hews

os Cerritos Community Newspaper has released an exclusive audio recording of a meeting between Acting Los Angeles County Deputy Assessor Santos Kreimann and at least one hundred employees that has raised additional eyebrows about his qualifications to oversee the complex department, and how he was selected for the position outside the glare of public scrutiny. Kreimann, the man charged with temporarily overseeing the operation of the embroiled office can be heard lashing out at members of the media and Los Cerritos Community Newspaper specifically and also admits that he has no professional qualification to be an assessor, or is not a property appraiser. The Assessor oversees a trillion dollars worth of property tax assessments, the largest of any agency in America. Kreimann now runs the day to day operations of the complex organization that has been the center of a massive criminal probe for the past nine months, Los Cerritos Community Newspaper was the first news paper to report on the current massive criminal probe that is now being called “the biggest pay-to-play scheme”

in the history of the Los Angeles County Hall of Administration. Some of the comments Kreimann made are as follows: “Been spending a lot of time trying to figure out what the hell I’m supposed to be doing as you all know I don’t really have a lot of experience at the assessor’s office, I’ve never worked at the assessor’s office.” -- Santos Kreimann admitting lack of qualifications. “Whoever is talking to the Los Cerritos Community Newspaper folks, tell them to spell my name right [audience laughs]. They spelled it wrong like six or seven dif different times! And in the same article. So how about spelling my name right? And the third thing I ask is, make sure I don’t find out about it, ok? Because if I find out about it, there will be consequences. K? So everyone understands that? We all under understand that? So don’t let me find out about it. But just don’t do it, because I really believe that it’s highly unprofessional to do something like that. There’s no reason for it. Whatever happened in the past is going to be part of our past,” Kreimann commenting against Los Cerritos Community Newspaper and warning employees not to speak to this news publication. ormer Artesia resident Dennis Ar Arriola has been named President and Chief Operating Officer of Southern California Gas Company. County Approves Community Development Block Grant for Artesia By Rico Dizon

ust when the City of Artesia needs all the help it can get including several cost-saving measures to correct the big deficit in its fiscal budget, approval of the city’s participation to the Los Angeles Urban County Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program could not have come at a more opportune time than during the regular meeting of the City Council on June 11. At the same meeting, City Manager Maria Dadian executed the Cooperation Agreement with the County of Los Angeles as a requirement for the city to be able to receive said CDBG funds during the program period from July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2015. The City is now entered as one of the 48 cities competing for the grant during the pre-qualification period which begins on July 1. To qualify as CDBG recipient, City Staff must develop strategies pursuant to Small Cities for State CDBG funding in 2015. Proposed projects must be consistent with broad national priorities for activities that benefit low and moderate-income people, the prevention or elimination of blight, or other community development activities to address an urgent threat to health and safety. If qualified and approved for the program, the city will have opportunities and

Sylvia Constanza, Relay for Life manager from the American Cancer Society, advocates, “The Relay for Life is a great community event, and brings many people from all walks of life together for a common goal.” The event was hosted by Cerritos and Artesia City in cooperation with the Amer American Cancer Society, and was originally founded in 1985 by Dr. Gordy Klatt. Relay, walkers consist of different teams, some representing certain cities, some for clubs, and some from local businesses, all there to support the cause. The rules require at least one walker from each team had to be on the track for all 24 hours. As an incentive for

he wife of a former Cypress mayor, Brinda Mc Coy was rushed to a local hospital on Sunday after local law enforcement received an emergency at approximately 10:50 am , in what is being called a “life threatening” situation. On Monday, Cypress Police Officials released a statement claiming that officers and paramedics arrived at the 4500 block of Tuscani regarding “a medical aid” call. “Upon arrival at the residence, officers came upon the victim, Brinda McCoy, and immediately began life-saving measures,” said Lieutenant Steve Ramsey in a statement to the media on Monday. Paramedics from the Orange County Fire Authority arrived shortly thereafter and began additional treatment. McCoy was subsequently transported to a local hospital for additional treatment. “Cypress Police Detectives responded to the scene to conduct a thorough investigation. At this point in the preliminary investigation, there does not appear to be foul play involved,” Ramsey said. McCoy, the former "First Lady" of Cypress, was charged with seven felony counts for shooting at responding police officers after calling 911 and initiating a dramatic stand-off with members of the police department back in December of 2010. Her husband Frank Mc Coy served as both a Councilman and Mayor of Cypress, as well as a Chief of Police in Oceanside. McCoy, 47, was charged with five felony counts of assault with a semi-automatic firearm on a peace officer and two felony counts of discharging a firearm with gross negligence with sentencing enhancements for the personal discharge of a firearm. Back on Dec. 16, 2010, McCoy is accused of calling 911 and stating she needed assistance. Responding Cypress Police Department officers attempted to get McCoy to come out of her residence. McCoy is accused of refusing to leave her house, pointing a firearm at her head, and then at the ceiling before pointing it directly at of officers outside. Police warned the defendant that if she fired her weapon, she would harm police officers. McCoy is accused of firing the gun twice at police officers who were stationed behind two parked vehicles outside the defendant’s home. SWAT stopped McCoy using a bean bag gun. Continued from page 1 incident Blagden’s attorney Ron Wilson said former Superintendent Gary Smuts stated the day before the “Kirby incident” that he had decided to demote her and made that announcement at a cabinet meeting. Unfortunately there is no documentation of the meeting. According to Dr. Smuts the accusation was not true. Wilson said the District hired a coach for Mrs. Blagden to improve her standing. According to the coach her biggest job was to determine why she was there or what Mrs. Blagden’s deficiencies were. “No one ever told me,” she testified under oath. “No one ever talked to her.” Wilson said. In her deposition then Deputy Superintendent Dr. Mary Sieu testified that Stowers was a great school. She said she didn’t

She confirmed Assistant Superintendent Carol Hansen had told Mrs. Blagden to do nothing about the death threats. Dr Sieu also described Mrs. Blagden as an honest person. She said she was told by Dr.Smuts that Mrs. Blagden was placed on administrative leave because of the death threat incident. She also said Carol Hanson told her the same thing. Dr. Sieu testified one of the reasons Mrs. Blagden was disciplined and demoted was for divulging confidential information. Asked what the information was, she replied the reporting the death threat made by teacher Kevin Kirby against two other

teachers to law enforcement officials. Another issue used against Mrs. Blagden was she refused to support an illegal, school sponsored non-profit foundation, which was not properly set up in accordance with California law.

The only other cities using the Sky Knight service is Lakewood, Hawaiian Gardens and Cerritos, with Lakewood having not made a decision for this year. All other cities to the north-Bellflower, Norwalk, Pico Rivera, Santa Fe Springs use the L.A. Sheriff’s Aero Bureau Ser Service, which is free and based on the number of deputies the city has. Councilmember Joseph Cho noted the budget had a $5 million deficit. He asked how that was going to be covered and if necessary would it be pulled out of the city’s reserve. covered from the reserve or anticipated additional dollars. Director of Administrative Services Denise Manoogian said they were expecting such funds on Jan 15 from the Successor Agency to the Redevelopment Agency. Cho asked how much funds were taken from the reserve since 2008. Manoogian said she would have to look that up. However, she said monies taken from the reserve are looked at as a loan that will be paid back. Mayor Pro Tem Bruce Barrows agreed with Councilmember Cho that they need to look at every area and see where they can pull back and bring cost and spending into alignment. He went back to the Sky Night program and then questioned why the city spends approximately $250,000 in print advertising and said he would like the city to re-evaluate the interest of its entire print advertising budget and see where it is duplicated and can be cut with the city finding new revenue sources to replace the tax increment tax. Council Member Chen agreed this was a difficult time financially for the city and it was difficult to dip into the reserve. “It’s not something we take lightly.” She said it was essential to raise new revenue and change the city’s way of marketing Staff was asked to come back to the council to see where savings can be made. She then went on to talk about the city’s print advertising budget saying, “there are many of on-line opportunities to advertise, we should look into those.” Councilman Pulido asked how many city positions were unfilled at their cost equivalent. The city manager said approximately 30 for a savings of $2.5 million. Pulido suggested a 10 per cent reduction could be made to

www.LosCerritosNews.net community organizations for a savings of $48,470, even though council had voted in a $59,000 budget for “cleaning the many art pieces in the city”. He again went back to the Sky Knight program’s $220,000 cut. The city manager answered one option was the money could be taken from a law enforcement’s $255,000 “contingency fund”. Asked how much of the contingency fund was used in the past, Gallucci said 15 percent. However, Director of Community Safety Services Greg Berg contradicted Gallucci and said that all the money was “earmarked” for overtime, training, additional county costs, the Los Cerritos Center etc. Pulido then went back to the city’s print advertising budget and what impact there would be if the CCPA brochure was cut back; what effect would that have on our ticket sales. Executive Director Dianne Cheney replied they have reduced their brochure costs by more than $200,000 by reducing the number of brochures being mailed and reducing the paper stock it is printed on. In regards to print advertising, she said they have stopped most advertising in the major newspapers like the Los Angeles Times and Orange County Register. They are relying more on web banners and some print. “With the economy in a down turn, we have had to change our approach in advertising. People are waiting to buy tickets, so we need to use newspapers, radio and internet advertising as well as the brochure. We will not get the web advertising if we stop our print advertising which will hurt ticket sales.” She said the newspapers they use for advertising occasionally run previews and interviews and that is good for ticket sales. Pulido then immediately moved that the Sky Knight helicopter patrol be put back into the budget with the funds coming directly from the city’s print advertising inclusive of the CCPA budget. It was seconded by Mayor pro tem Barrows. The council unanimously approved the motion. The council then approved the budget with instruction to staff to come back with a report on further possible departments cuts and new revenue sources.

their motivation. “We depend on intrinsic motivation,” says Shipherd, “extrinsic is way to shallow to affect success over the long term.” Brennan Jacobsen, Courtney Hanson, Jessica Marsh, Kirstie Chen, Nicole Chang, Ryan Kao, and Samantha Shellem are the seven swimmers who qualified for the Olympic Trials. For these dynamic swimmers, swimming has been a major component in their lives since their junior high years and for some since they were in elementary. If its one thing they all realize is that to be competitive in this sport it takes more than simply being present at practice everyday. Ryan Kao, 16, who competed this past Monday in the 400m free prelims at the Olympic Trials can attest to this. Kao said, “There is a lot of dedication, hours and hours of training, and you need a lot of mental toughness to get through the work workouts.” Nicole Chang, 17, who also competed in the 400m free prelims this past Tuesday agrees with her teammate. “Coach Rick is always telling me that your most valuable coach is in your mind, she says, the worst coach is also in your mind.” This sport is extremely mental and a strong mind is a necessity to handle the rigorous workout schedule. The top swimmers swim an average of 9,000 meters a day in addition to doing land workouts for extra conditioning and strength. Although there is no minimum age limit for the swimmers, all competitors had to make the standard time before June 18th in order to qualify for the Olympic Trials. All seven of the Armada swimmers met the qualifying standards throughout their various competitions last year. Courtney Hanson, only 14 years of age, hit the qualifying standard as a 13 year old. “I didn’t know I made it at first, she said, “my coach came over and said you got your trials cut. It was pretty exciting.” The fourteen-yearold swimmer is expecting to enter Mater Dei High School this fall as a freshman. Although, she may be the only one in her class to have such an experience under her belt. Already in college are Brennan Jacobsen of Notre Dame, Kirstie Chen of Stanford, Jessica Marsh of University of Nevada Las Vegas, and Samantha Shellem who will join the UC Davis Aggies this fall as a sophomore. Jacobsen was in the same heat as Kao in the 400m free prelims on Monday, while Chen swam shortly after them in the 400m Individ-

Ryan Kao ual Medley. Marsh, 19, Shellem, 20, and Chang, all competed in the 400m free prelims the following day. Shellem, a second time qualifier to the Olympic Trials also competed in the 200m free on Wednesday, while Chen doubled back to do the 200m fly on Thursday. I had the opportunity to speak with them before their departure to the trials and they all seemed equally excited and honored to be performing at such a high level. Additionally, they were all working on last minute preparations such as pacing, making sure their stroke was just right, and focusing mentally on their competition. More than a week later and halfway done with the Trials, all of the swimmers have competed in their respective events with the exception of Hanson, the fourteen year old phenomenon, who will compete in the 200m breast stroke today. The final three heats will be televised, however to watch and cheer for Hanson consider tuning in to a live feed that can be found on the official U.S. Olympic Team Trials website. We wish them all well and safe travels back home and cannot wait to see whatever is in store next for the seven Olympic hopefuls. With one out in the fourth, designated player Marissa Padilla (Santa Monica High School) singled and catcher Heather Cameron (Cerritos High School) reached on an error. A fielder’s choice from right fielder Sarah Parten (Mayfair High School), the youngest player on the team who will enter high school next month, brought in Padilla and a walk issued to second baseman Jessica Munoz (Canyon High School/Southern Nevada University) would load the bases. The lead increased to 3-0 on a base hit from shortstop Emily Brucelas (Fountain Valley High School/University of California, Santa Barbara), which plated courtesy runner Deja Portillo (Gahr High school) and a sacrifice fly from O’Connor brought in Parten. That was more than enough for pitcher Cerissa Rivera (Fountain Valley High School/Monmouth University) who was completely stellar in the circle. Rivera scattered four hits, struck out six and did not walk a batter. No Stealth runner got past second base and Rivera, who threw 91 pitches in seven innings, reached a threeball count three times. “I couldn’t do it by myself, obviously,” Rivera said. “I have a whole team with me. But it felt nice to finally get the opportunity to be in a big situation and be the one with the ball in my hand. It was nice to have my team behind me and actually win the last game that we needed to win.”

The Punishers added solo tallies in the fifth and seventh innings and finished with 11 hits, the fourth time in the six playoff games they had reached double digits in hits. Padilla went three for four while O’Connor and first baseman Analisa Nicholson (Redondo High School) each had two hits. Most of the talk in the final few days of the tournament was centered on Rivera and the pitching staff. Jennifer Iseri (Cerritos High School) had sprained her left knee during pool play action on June 27 and would not pitch again in the tournament. That left Rivera and Sara Garcia (Santa Monica High School) as the only pitchers the remainder of the tournament. While Rivera got the bulk of the pitching, it was Garcia who came through in the clutch last Saturday against the USA Athletics. Garcia allowed single runs in the first two innings but kept the USA Athletics at bay which allowed her team to score three in the top of the third as the Punishers escaped with a 4-3 win which sent the Punishers into the semifinals. “Sara did an amazing job,” Rivera said. “When we needed her, she came out the most. She had a tough game the day before but she snapped right out of it and picked it up and more on it against a really good team.” The Punishers sent eight batters to the plate in that third inning and received run scoring singles from third baseman Me-

Throughout the majority of the week, Rivera was pitching with a blister on her pitching finger, a blister on her foot and a cut toe on her other foot. But she managed to allow 14 hits and strike out 21 batters in 25 innings of work during the six playoff games. “It wasn’t really so much of Cerissa because she’s like that,” Blanck said. “She’ll just step up and do whatever we ask her to do.
