a Palma Intercommunity Hospital had an unused rehabilitation pool, and the City of La Palma had a need. This was the starting point for a journey of partnership and creativity that would turn this once unused hospital pool into a community asset. “Here was an asset that was no longer being used, and I knew there must be some way to benefit the community,” said Virg Narbutas, Orange County Regional CEO for Prime Healthcare.

here are over 525 burglaries and/ or attempted break-ins a year in the City of Artesia, if you base the number of crimes directly from the number of times the Sheriff’s Department responded to the sounds of alarms emanating from both the business and residential sectors in the small municipality. Amazingly though, out of these 525 alarms, only less than 5% are real burglaries. More than 95% or approximately 500 of them are false alarms. These are the staggering facts and figures gathered and presented by Pradeepkumar Elayath, Administrative Services Manager, during the regular Artesia City Council meeting held last week. “Responding to excessive false alarms

Huntington Park Council Attempted to Remove City Clerk Prior to Certification of Election By Randy Economy and Brian Hews Huntington Park Mayor Andy Molina called for an emergency meeting this past Tuesday at 6 p.m. to apparently remove City Clerk Rosanna Ramirez one week after voters appear to have voted him and Vice-Mayor Elba Guerrero out of office and before the election has been legally certified. But two sources, who did not want to be identified, told LCCN that Molina and Guerrero along with City Council Members Mario Gomez, Rosa Perez and Ofelia Hernandez plan to remove Ramirez from her city clerk duties, “regardless of the fact that the final outcome of the election has not been finalized or legally certified.” Ramirez did confirm to LCCN that there are approximately 400 additional late absentee and provisional ballots that still need to be processed and confirmed to be legal voters.
Los Cerritos Community Newspaper broke the story online Tuesday afternoon, after which the Council decided not to take action on the Public Employee Discipline/Dismissal/Release agenda item. “I have no idea what is going on,” said Karina Macias, who appears to have placed first in last week’s balloting. “I am hearing lots of rumors, and I just have not been told what is really going on behind closed doors.” Macias said she is planning to attend tonight’s session but declined to confirm if she will speak before the council heads behind closed doors. CERRITOS MAYORAL TRANSITION; Felons and Hacks Welcome, Along With Political Amnesia By Brian Hews publisher@cerritosnews.net
T
he more things change the more they remain the same. The circus rolled into Cerritos City Hall Brian Hews on Wednesday night. Publisher Yep. You can’t make this stuff up. It was the annual Cerritos Mayoral Transition. San Juan Capistrano have their “swallows” that return like clockwork each and every year and, well, here in Cerritos we hold a lavish, dragged out city council love fest where people travel from far distances to shower plaques, prizes, awards, certificates, even yellow fire-man jackets and
hats to the lucky guy or gal who is going out of office as mayor. It is like a time honored passage here in Cerritos. For generations, as winter turns into spring, the back patting goes into full swing at the annual transition. Incoming Mayor Bruce Barrows promised that the meeting would be over in a timely matter. Barrows must have had his fingers crossed behind his back, because this meeting seemed like it would never come to an end. And nobody checked for convicted felons at the party either. I am sure Edwards was very proud to receive a “certificate of service” on behalf of a state senator from representative Mario Beltran who was convicted in March 2007 for filing a false police report in a case involving visits to a prostitute in a seedy downtown hotel, later passing out drunk in the hallway. Then there was the mayor of La Palma who was shadowed by a local busy body gadfly/former reporter who wrote an article bashing Tony Medoza’s wife and was fired over it. “I brought along this guy with me tonight,” a befuddled La Palma Mayor Steve Hwangbo told an embarrassed Edwards. After sitting there for two hours, finally the residents got their first glimpse of incoming City Councilman George Ray.
TO ADVERTISE CALL 800-901-7211
Los Cerritos Community Newspaper is a fan of George Ray. We supported his election. Ray knows what it is like to run a business and make payroll, unlike some on city council, including the new Mayor. But he could not stop Council-woman Chen. In an arrogant maneuver, Ray was upstaged when Chen barged into his moment in the spotlight by demanding that the two “take our oaths together.” It was embarrassing and awkward for Ray and his family. They were forced to watch from a distance instead of being allowed to be by his side to capture this important moment. Carol Chen stole George Ray’s special moment. As she giggled next to Ray, she awkwardly took her Oath of Office with her left hand instead of her right hand like all elected officials normally do here in the United States of America. Chen also suffered from political amnesia. She showed Cerritos residents just how happy she was to be re-elected to the council. How? This past Tuesday she held her campaign celebration at the Muse Chinese Restaurant in Artesia that was attended by more than 55 people. That’s right readers, she held her campaign celebration in Artesia. Muse is located in the same center that was built by Zion Enterprises, a company
that gave $5,000 in late campaign cash to Chen. This was documented in this paper Feb 22, with campaign statements online at loscerritosnews.net. We got an email Tuesday night telling us of the dinner. Just to make sure, I called the restaurant Tuesday night, asked what time the Chen party was tomorrow night, and the employee politely laughed and said, “it was tonight, they just left.” Reporter Randy Economy called a few minutes later and was told the same thing. When contacted by LCCN, Chen denied the dinner, denied knowing the developer, and even said she did not know where Muse was. The more thing change the more they remain the same.

Thanks LCCN Reporters Dear Editor:
T
o all of your reporters I wish to say thank you. We have lived in Cerritos since 1977 and I am so disgusted at what has been happening with the council. You speak the truth so have been blackballed by them. They were trying to cover up the truth and you stuck to your digging and reporting. I just wish we could clean house on all of them. I would like to know how the trips happened. Who oversees their spending and how long have they been sleeping on the job. Is it the city manager? We have sidewalks, roads, trees and I am sure much more that needs repair and the money they spent on travel could have paid for much of it. I have known Mr. Edwards since our kids went to school together and I would have never thought he would be a party of this type of taxpayers spending. Barrows on the other hand is another story. Chen surprised me too. The bigger papers need to jump on this before we are the next Bell or Vernon. We need to get them out so how can we accomplish this starting with Barrows before he is arrogant Mayor again and pulls more stuff? Thanks for listening, Concerned resident

Relentlesy Seeking the Truth Moves LCCN's Hews and Economy Closer to Pulitzer Prize This letter was written by R.B.Russell who served as the first Reuters correspondent in Los Angeles from 1968-78, then Reuters bureau chief in Washington for 13 years.
Dear Pulitzer Prize Judges,
I
t has been brought to my notice that the little Los Angeles-area free newspaper The Los Cerritos Community News has been proposed for your prestigious prize in the categories of Public Service and Investigative Series. As the first ever Reuters correspondent appointed to Los Angeles to serve in that post from 1968-78, then Reuters bureau chief in Washington for 13 years and subsequently spending my retirement years in Los Angeles, I feel I have considerable knowledge of Los Angeles newspapering and newspapers. The sad decline of big city newspapers
over the past decade has thrown more and more emphasis on the role of little newspapers and citizens groups for exposing government abuse and nowhere is this put into starker relief than in the case of Los Angeles. Los Angeles Times, once the stern guardian of the public interest in the time of Publisher Otis Chandler, has seen its reporting staff cut by loss of circulation and its managerial and editorial direction undermined first by being acquired by an out of state firm and then passing into bankruptcy from which it is about to emerge to hopefully brighter times. The Cerritos Community News is a tiny free newspaper in one of the jigsaw of housing tract and shopping mall suburbs to the south of Los Angeles City proper. But it has one significant distinction from other such small suburban newspapers. Its owner. Brian Hews, and chief reporter, Randy Economy, form a hotshot team in investigating government malfeasance. Recently they exposed what the L.A. District Attorney called ‘the largest and most significant public corruption case in L.A. County history’. This was the alleged corrupt administration of the Los Angeles County Assessor’s office by John Noguez who is now in prison awaiting trial on charges of taking bribes to reduce taxes of large property owners.
MARCH 15, 2013
The Cerritos newspaper raised a red flag about Noguez’s candidacy at the time of his election by saying he was running for office under a wrong name but the Times and everyone else for that matter ignored their disclosure. The Los Cerritos newspaper and other small organizations which have taken on the challenge of exposing public corruption do so under the constant threat of falling victim to abusive legal and other threatening tactics and for this reason I feel it is appropriate for your Pulitzer Prize committee and committees to recognize the courage and dedication of these little outfits. It is a fact of life in these present days of falling large newspaper circulations that citizens must rely a great deal more on smaller newspapers like the Los Cerritos Community News to watch over their interests. I hope that the above will help persuade you to reward the journalistic efforts of this gallant little newspaper. Yours very truly, R.B.Russell

LA MIRADA DUI/DRIVERS LICENSE CHECKPOINT PLANNED The La Mirada Public Safety Team will be conducting a DUI/Drivers License checkpoint at an undisclosed location within the city limits. The deterrent effect of DUI checkpoints is a proven resource in reducing the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol or drug involved crashes. Research shows that crashes involving alcohol drop by an average of 20 percent when well-publicized checkpoints are conducted often enough. Deputies will be contacting drivers passing through the checkpoint for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment. Deputies will also check drivers for proper licensing and will work to delay motorists only mo-

mentarily. Specially trained deputies will be available to evaluate those suspected of drug-impaired driving. Drivers caught driving impaired can expect jail, license suspension, and insurance increases, as well as fines, fees, DUI classes, and other expenses that can exceed $10,000. In 2011, over 10,000 people were killed nationally in motor vehicle traffic crashes that involved at least one driver or motorcycle rider with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08% or higher. In California, this deadly crime led to 774 deaths because someone failed to designate a sober driver. “Over the course of the past three years, DUI collisions have claimed 4 lives and resulted in 17 injury crashes
harming 21 of our friends and neighbors,” said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Traffic Detective Tibbetts. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), checkpoints have provided the most effective documented results of any of the DUI enforcement strategies, while also yielding considerable cost savings of $6 for every $1 spent. Based on collision statistics and frequency of DUI arrests, DUI checkpoints are placed in locations that have the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence. Locations are chosen with safety considerations for the officers and the public. “DUI checkpoints have been an es-
sential part of the phenomenal reduction in DUI deaths that we witnessed since 2006 in California,” said Christopher J. Murphy, Director of the Office of Traffic Safety. “But since the tragedy of DUI accounts for nearly one third of traffic fatalities, La Mirada needs the high visibility enforcement and public awareness that checkpoints provide.” Funding for this checkpoint is provided to the La Mirada Public Safety Team by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, reminding everyone to continue to work together to bring an end to these tragedies. Jailed LA County Assessor Noguez Freed On Bail By Randy Economy Jailed Los Angeles County Assessor John R. Noguez has been freed from a downtown jail facility he has called home for the past five months. A total of 11 different people were involved in contributing the necessary $1.16 million in property and collateral needed to secure his release, Los Cerritos Community Newspaper has been able to confirm. Morris DeMayo, the bail bond agent for Noguez, said that the amounts of contributions to the bail fund ranged from $5,000 to $15,000 and that one longtime friend of the former Huntington Park mayor and councilman also chipped in $600,000.00 in col-

lateral by putting up a piece of property. DeMayo said that he would not be allowed under law to release the names of the individuals who were responsible for participating in Noguez bond until at least mid-April when he is expected to be appearing back in an Downtown Los Angeles court room. LCCN will publish all of the names of those individuals who contributed to the bail fund as soon as they are made public. Max Huntsman, Deputy District Attorney for Public Integrity also told LCCN in an interview last Friday afternoon that Noguez had to pass a medical exam from doctors inside the jail before he was be released. Noguez was released at 8:56 p.m., according to Captain Mike Parker of the LA County Sheriff’s Department. Several members of the media were allowed into a secured garage area at the jail in order to capture the first images of Noguez as a free man for the first time in five months. But, the throng of media was left without any footage of the release since Noguez was apparently allowed to be released out a separate exit. “Assessor Noguez will be under a tight set of rules and will be monitored carefully,” Huntsman said. DeMayo said that the individuals who contributed to the bail fund are “close longtime friends” of Noguez. “These aren’t well known people, just people who were willing to step up and help John get out of jail,” he said. One of Noguez neighbors in Huntington Park who lives a couple of doors down from him, told LCCN that he is “not looking forward to having John back home.” “Listen, we live here, and we hope that
our community isn’t turned into a media circus,” the source who did not want to be named lamented. Noguez is due back in court in late April for a pre-trial hearing. As word of his release reached his employees inside the sprawling Assessors operation early Friday morning, Santos Kreimann, the handpicked Chief Deputy Assessor of Chief Operating Officer William Fujioka last summer was quick to issue a statement. “I was informed that the District Attorney and Judge have cleared the source of funds and collateral to secure Mr. Noguez bail,” Kreimann wrote. Los Cerritos Community Newspaper was sent a copy of the email less than 15 minutes after Kreimann released it via email from several employees who work in the Assessor’s office. “As a result, I anticipate that his release from incarceration later today is imminent. I plan to meet with Mr. Noguez once he gets settled in to provide a briefing on the important progress we’ve made in his absence to stabilize the office, enhance our operations and restore the public’s trust,” Kreimann stated. “Although as an elected official Mr. Noguez has the right the immediately return to his post, I fully expect that he will remain on a voluntary leave of absence to focus on his legal issues and minimize the impact of the train on our day-to-day operations,” Kreimann said. LCCN also contacted Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas about the release of Noguez on Monday. Ridley-Thomas, the current Chairman of the powerful fivemember body did not want to talk about the situation, through a press representative.

and run them.” Enter the Anaheim Family YMCA, who had been running swim programs in local shared-use spaces for many years. “It was the perfect combination of partners,” Narbutas continued. “Between the hospital, the City, and the YMCA, each partner brought specific expertise and resources to the table. Everyone stepped in for the good of the community.” What Narbutas had not anticipated was the significant cost and time that would be necessary to bring the former rehabilitation pool to county standards for community use. It was an investment well worth the effort, according to Narbutas. In February 2013, La Palma Intercommunity Hospital began offering its first community programs in the new Indoor Fitness Pool. The two available programs literally span all ages from “Mommy & Me” swim lessons to Water Fitness for active older adults. What was once a vacant space in the hospital became an exciting community resource to help people become healthier, improve quality of life, and promote water safety. This story also has a personal connection to Narbutas. “My mom used to love aqua therapy. It helped her with many health challenges, including diabetes. It’s very fulfilling to have played a role in ensuring our hospital pool was put to good use.” A Community Open House for the new Indoor Fitness Pool at La Palma Intercommunity Hospital is scheduled for March 20, 2013. The hospital is welcoming all of the community to come celebrate from 4:00-7:00 p.m. To learn more, contact Rachel Hogue at (714) 229-4016.
signed” and a case was opened for “preliminary review.” During the past several weeks, LCCN has published a number of investigative articles that has called into question how Vasquez conducted her successful 2012 campaign and her association with past convicted individuals who according to sources make up her political inner-circle. Those people in the inner circle include Rick Mayer, a convicted felon, along with political consultant Angel Gonzalez. The two donated huge sums of money and were the two key figures responsible for getting Vasquez and Roybal elected. According to documents filed with the California Secretary of State’s Office both Vasquez and Roybal owe the two more than $40,000 combined. Vasquez told state officials that she still owes Gonzalez at least $18,399 for campaign signs and mailing costs, more than eight months after being elected last June. Roybal owes $22,878 to Mayer in expenses. Los Cerritos Community Newspaper has been told by several sources that both Mayer and Gonzalez could be rewarded for their connections with Vasquez and Roybal by being granted consulting contracts that could bring in hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars. Since taking office on January 7th, 2013, in less than one month, Roybal and Vasquez joined ranks with long-time Director Bob Apodaca and created a new “voting bloc majority” at Central Basin. The three changed the Administrative Code and removed President Art Chacon from overseeing the Board just barely one week after he was seated for the position. Our Lady of Fatima School Celebrates Dr. Seuss’ Birthday By Irma Reyburn Our Lady of Fatima Kindergarteners, First, and Second Graders celebrated Dr. Seuss day in grand fashion, with Green Eggs and Ham, green grapes, green apples, tons o’treats, and of course, Dr. Seuss stories. Kindergarten teacher Ms. Judy Perez, greeted her class in her УCat in the HatФ costume the morning of Wednesday, March 6th. The children jumped with joy, laughed and had giant grins of excitement to see their teacher dressed up in celebration of Dr. Seuss’ Birthday and could not wait to get the morning started. Ms. Judy Perez in her УCat in the HatФ costume, First Grade teacher, Mrs. Alice Ackley, and Second Grade Teacher, Mrs. Sonia Marroquin organized a fabulous morning of reading centers for the children. Each center was visited by 15 children, in mixed groups of kindergarten through second graders. The children sat, for a moment there was silence, within minutes the room erupted into rhyme, mooing, and the mixture of reader’s voic-
es, children’s voices, and tons of laughter. Once each story was read the children were given a treat related to the story. For example, Deputy De Dios passed out Gold Fish cracker snack bags, and Mr. Juan Nagore provided the Scooby Snacks. The big hit was УThe Cat in the HatФ read by Hope Vega, where the children received their very own Dr. Seuss УCat in the HatФ hat, which they all donned the rest of the morning. Once the reading centers were completed, the children were off to play. This allowed the wonderful room parents, volunteers, and teachers to make final food preparations. The children returned energized and ready to indulge in УGreen Eggs and Ham. OLF would like to thank our guest readers for volunteering your valuable time to our students and our community. To our parents and families, thank you for your food donations which made this celebration a delicious success. To our room parents, thank you for your time and dedication in setting up, food preparation, and cleaning up. A big thank you to our Power Teachers, Ms. Perez, Mrs. Ackley, and Mrs. Marroquin,

Not too many can make the claim that 42-year Cerritos resident Charlie Ara can. He went to the same Seminary with three Cardinals who elected the new Pope. In Charlie Ara's 12 years of Seminary training in Los Angles and Camarillo, he was associated with and was a mentor of Cardinal Roger Mahony, Cardinal Justin Rigali and Cardinal William Levada. Ordained a Catholic Priest in 1956 and married in 1970, Ara was known in the words of Cardinal Mahony as "you were just ahead of your time." Charlie remembers the rivalry between his mom and Cardinal Justin Rigali’s mom as to who would rise highest in the Catholic church. He said his mom cautioned him to wear clerical shirts with buttoned cufflinks. Because Charlie did not listen to
his mom, Cardinal Rigali elected the new Pope instead of him. At St. John's Seminary in Camarillo, Charlie led a movement in 1952 to support farm worker families who were being paid low wages and lived in terrible housing conditions. Ara became an inspiration to Cardinal Roger Mahony who now leads the American Bishops in their effort for Comprehensive Immigration Reform. In his younger years, Cardinal William Levada was inspired by Ara's (along with Father John Coffield) vision of Social Justice as embodied in the Young Christian Workers movement. However, before his retirement, Cardinal Levada became the fall guy for Benedict XVI in attacking progressive American Nuns. Charlie is hopeful that the new Pope will call for Vatican III, support a married clergy, and the ordination of women.

Continued from page 1 Mirada city elections.” “I have decided not to go further and order a recount,” Keithly told the La Mirada Lamplighter. “I have talked to Andrew and have congratulated him on his victory, and he was very appreciative,” Keithly said. Keithly voiced his concerns and frustrations about the balloting. “I don’t think it is fair to put out at least $5,000 for a recount after all of the problems that surfaced on election night and afterwards. I thought the City of La Mirada should be responsible for paying for and conducting a recount including a review of late absentee ballots that were turned in,” he said. Keithly said that he and Sarega have been “cordial all along during the campaign.” “Actually, Andrew and I believe that things need to change at La Mirada City Hall, especially on the city council. He is an intelligent young man who is still in his 20’s but will hopefully bring a lot of energy and ask the hard questions,” Keithly said. Keithly also said that he and several of his supporters urged Mayor Gabe Garcia to drop out of the campaign three weeks prior to election day, and two months after he was arrested on charges of driving under the influence. “There is no question in many of our minds, that Gabe staying in the race hurt my chances to win. I guess his pride got into the way, he should have done the noble and honest thing by dropping out of the election,” Keithly said. A successful local business owner, Keithly told the Lamplighter that he is “deeply concerned about the future of La Mirada.” “Look, what happened in this election really stings, but all of us here in La Mirada need to keep active and to keep monitoring what our city officials are doing,” Keithly said. He also did not say what his future plans were going to be. “I am financially secure, and this was not about money, this campaign was about getting things moving in a different direction at La Mirada City Hall.” Sarega and top vote getter, Councilwoman Pauline Deal will be officially sworn into office later this month.

ALARMS
Continued from page 1 endangers the public’s health and safety by preventing, diverting, or delaying Sheriff’s Department deputies from performing other important police services, such as preventing criminal activity, investigating leads and solving crimes,” reported Elayath as he vigorously justified his recommendation to waive further reading and introduce Ordinance 13-793 Requiring Alarm System User Permits and Imposing False Alarm Fees. In addition, it is estimated that on an annual basis, the City spends approximately $42,000 on deputy false alarm response time, taking into consideration hourly wages and benefits of a top step deputy. When responding to any alarm, at least two deputies are required to determine if the alarm is false or verified. The two deputies normally spend 20 to 40 minutes responding to the location of the alarm and checking the premises to determine whether the alarm is false or verified. Each deputy is paid on average of $50 per hour. During the course of the discussion, however, it was agreed that the alarm user permit fee be waived of. “I am not sold to the idea of alarm user permit fee,” said Mayor Sally Flowers and to which the other council members concurred. Also, the Staff surveyed 13 surrounding cities to compare their fees and the results showed majority do not carry users permit fee. The proposed false alarm fee on the other hand is similarly relevant and enforced by at least 10 of the 13 neighboring cities. It is the expectation of the Staff that the false alarm fee will partially offset the cost of Sheriff’s Department’s time in responding to those false signals. As it is, non-alarm system users are subsidizing the users thru taxes used for overall costs of law enforcement including responses to false alarms. At the same time, the City Staff would like to encourage business owners and residents to keep their alarms in good working conditions and operate them efficiently. In implementing the “False Alarm Ordinance” fee, the City Council voted to charge $100 on the fourth response, adding $50 for every succeeding response to businesses’ false alarms. For the residences, the City Council initially agreed that the false alarm fee would be $50.00 starting from the 10th response and rising to $50 for every succeeding time thereafter. The Council went for a high tolerance time because of the several reported causes of triggering a false alarm in addition to user’s error and malfunction. However, Elayath have some reservations and he thinks that this is subject to further discussions in the near future.

riends and sometimes travel ball teammates hooked up last Thursday when Gahr’s softball team hosted Norwalk in a backyard border tilt. But the Lady Lancers gave a the Gladiators a rude home opener as junior center fielder Viviana Gomez cracked a first-inning grand slam to lead her team to a 12-3 victory. It was the first time since 2003 that these two somewhat neighborly schools, by city standards separated by the 91 freeway, have met. Norwalk prevailed in that encounter, 9-3. Last Thursday, the Lady Lancers used a two-out rally in the first inning to score five runs and put the game away early. With a runner at second and two outs, Gahr sophomore Deidra Genera walked junior catcher Samantha Lujan before yielding hits to senior third baseman Crystal Cano and junior shortstop Jenny Vasquez, the later bringing home freshman right fielder Kathleen Perez. That set the stage for Gomez, who on a 2-2 count, plus fouling off two pitches, connected on a low and outside change-up to the left field gap to clear the bases. “We had two girls hit deep hits into short and…we got those in,” said Norwalk first-year head coach Antonio Aguirre. “Then [Genera] came in under [Viviana] and she blasted it into left centerfield for a grand slam. We’ve been working hard on hitting, hitting, hitting, hitting and it’s paying off right now. We’re happy with the girls right now.” Norwalk added two more runs in the second and fourth innings with Cano smacking a two-run home run in the fourth before Gahr finally got on the board. Freshman center fielder Alyssa Cuffia singled with one out and scored an unearned run when junior right fielder Mel Varela tapped an infield single which was thrown away twice, allowing Varela to advance to third. Freshman third baseman Erica Espinoza then reached on another error, making the score 9-2. “Our bats definitely weren’t alive today,” said Gahr first-year head coach Shawn Quarles. “We were definitely having a slow day at the plate. I think the momentum just

f it sounds like a broken record player, then it probably is. But once again, Gahr’s baseball team has the talent to get past the semifinal jinx and advance to a California Interscholastic FederationSouthern Section championship game. Valley Christian is hoping to make it back to back Olympic League titles with another experienced unit while Artesia and Cerritos anticipate much better results. Norwalk brings in a new coach with familiar ties while John Glenn aims to get back to the playoffs. Returning players in italics ARTESIA PIONEERS (5-20 overall last season, 1-11 in the Suburban League, seventh place) Head coach: Michael Gaoghagen (11th season, 101-160-1) Team’s record previous five seasons: 31-93-1 Last time made the playoffs: 2007 Key losses: Cesar Esparza, Jeremy Gaskin, Efrain Huizar, Carlos Ramirez, Gary Smith, Cesar Soto, Guadalupe Soto Projected lineup: P-Jerry Azzato (SR)/Tyler Brown (JR)/ Tommy Corrales (SR)/Joseph Herrera (SR) C-Corrales/Marcus Johnson (SO)/David Montano (JR)/Roman Salazar (JR) 1B-Osbiel Montano (JR) 2B-Matt Munoz (SO)/Salazar 3B-Brown/Javier Vasquez (SO) SS-Herrera/Munoz OF-Azzato/Ivan Rosales (JR) OF-Julian Mendoza (SR)/Jesse Vega (SR) OF-Diego Castaneda (JR)/Brendon Taylor (JR) After competing with Norwalk for the Suburban League’s fourth and final automatic playoff berth the past two seasons, the Pioneers regressed and finished in last place for the first time since 2008. 44-6. The team ended the season on an 11game slide but lost by one or two runs five times during that stretch. “I don’t think we played to our potential,” said Artesia head coach Michael Gaoghagen. “I think we were a mid-pack team that if we played well, we could have made the playoffs. But we didn’t play very well during the Easter break and it kind of continued when we got back into league play.” Coming into this season, the two concerns will be in the pitching department and the infield defense. But Artesia has depth behind the plate, something that the program hasn’t had in quite some time. The Pioneers return only five players and Gaoghagen says he has guarded optimism for 2013 as the team is still growing. Seniors Jerry Azzato and Tommy Corrales lead the pitching staff and combined to go 3-5 last season. “We’re looking for big things from Tommy Corrales,” Gaoghagen said. “He’ll be pitching, catching and wherever we need him. He’s looking to make amends for last year. “We don’t have any guys who blow 90 [miles per hour],” Gaoghagen continued. “We never do. But as long as our guys throw strikes, which they’re doing a lot better job of and our infield just makes routine plays, we’ll be alright.” Junior first baseman Osbiel Montano and sophomore third baseman Javier Vasquez anchor the infield and will have to guide the newcomers in the middle. Junior Roman Salazar is a transfer from Cerritos. Although the offense may not be among the best, Gaoghagen says filling out his lineup card will be harder this season. “In the past, it was pretty easy to make a lineup because there was a big difference between No. 11-16,” Gaoghagen said. “This year, it’s a lot closer. It will be harder to make a lineup but it will be nicer because that means it will push everybody.” CERRITOS DONS (8-19 overall last season, 2-10 in the Suburban League, sixth place) Head coach: Chris Aquino (third season, 14-37) Team’s record previous five seasons: 32-97 Last time made the playoffs: 1998

But he began to see a slight turnaround last season and said the team became fundamentally better, as well as the togetherness of the players and the hitting across the board. Aquino said he knew the season was going the other way when his team visited Glenn in its Suburban League opener. “I think it was after the first John Glenn game,” Aquino said. “We had a 2-0 lead and they played their hearts out and we lost in extra innings 3-2. That’s what hurt them the most; if they put 110 percent effort into the game, and they lose from it, it’s really hard for them to recover the next game. Our momentum was struggling to come up until our last six games when we won four in a row coming into La Mirada.” The Dons are still very experienced but will have a varsity rookie as their No. 1 pitcher. Junior Eugene Chang, who allowed one run during fall league, gets that call. Sophomore Jacob Carter and senior Andrew Ortega will follow Chang in the rotation. Sophomore Justin Fujii figures to be a long-inning pitcher while senior Omar Rodriguez is slated to be the closer. The catching duo of seniors Jake Liang and J.T. Mars is solid while senior Nick Lee, who was a catcher last season, will add some punch to the outfield as he moves to left. Another move to the outfield comes from junior Juan Rodriguez as he moves from shortstop to center. The eight victories last season were the most since Cerritos won nine in the 2006 season. “This year we’re going to compete for that fourth spot,” Aquino said. “I’m really, really excited.”This year’s seniors are hungry. They’re hungry to win and they have a fire that I’ve never seen before in the last two years with the [previous] seniors. They are willing to guide these younger guys.” GAHR GLADIATORS (19-11 overall
www.HewsMediaGroup.com last season, 11-4 in the San Gabriel Valley League, tied for first place, lost to Bonita 3-0 in the Division III semifinals) Head coach: Geraldo Perez (ninth season, 153-80-1) Team’s record previous five seasons: 91-56 Last time missed the playoffs: 1998 Key losses: Alonso Casillas, Hayden Humphreys, Hector Partida, Freddy Perez, Anthony Rodriguez Projected lineup: P-George Castillo (JR)/Andrew Encinas (SR)/Valentin Flores (JR)/Larry Gannon (JR)/Greg Humbert (SR)/Paul Versteeg (SO) C-Humbert/Victor Salazar (FR) 1B-Daniel Gomez (SR) 2B-Edgar Morales (SR) 3B-Joe Dressel (SO)/Kevin Franklin (SR) SS-Adonis Morrison (SR) OF-Albert Perez (SR)/Oscar Reyna (SR) OF-Jaime Estrada (JR)/Morrison OF-Dressel/Franklin For the second time in the past three seasons, Gahr’s long-awaited bid to reach the championship was cut one game short. But don’t mention going to the title game to head coach Geraldo Perez, who has continued to build the Gahr program to be one of the best in Southern California. “I don’t have enough time to think about all of that stuff, to be honest with you,” Perez said. “Every team is different. Every team is unique. [Former Gahr] coach [Tom] Bergeron put it in perspective. In my first year here, I thought we had a phenomenal team that year and we got eliminated in a nine-inning game that year out in Temecula after we went out there twice. We went to Paloma Valley first, then to Temecula Valley and we lost in the quarterfinals. Tom said, ‘don’t feel bad. I coached for 33 years and I only made it to the finals twice and the semifinals twice’. We’re Gahr High School, so I’m very proud of what the kids that we’ve had here have come together to do.” Perez added that he hopes the kids don’t think about going to the title game, but instead wants them to enjoy their time together as Gahr baseball players. He said last season, the kids responded and picked each other up when things didn’t go their way and that they became independent. This may be one of Gahr’s best returning group of seniors ever and is definitely the best under Perez. Gahr’s pitching staff had an earned run average of 2.03 last season and it got even better with the addition of senior Greg Humbert, a transfer from Mayfair. Senior Andrew Encinas, who will be going to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, is still the ace of the pitching staff and had an ERA of 0.83 last season with 65 strikeouts in 73 innings. Perez says Humbert ‘has been a good fit and he’s one of us’.
“They have experience; they have some mileage underneath them,” Perez said of the pitching staff. “I do feel comfortable in that.” When speaking of the infield, Perez simply stated that, ‘it’s not hard this year’. Senior first baseman Daniel Gomez, senior second baseman Edgar Morales, who will be going to the University of California, Riverside, senior third baseman Kevin Franklin (Arizona State University) and senior shortstop Adonis Morrison (UC Riverside) are hard to beat. Morrison was an outfielder last season while junior Jaime Estrada (University of Oregon) moves from shortstop to center field. .The returning infield starters all batted no worse than .360 last season Gahr went 11-4 last season in the San Gabriel Valley League, good enough for first place which once again proves that this is one of the toughest leagues around. Gahr’s league title last season was its first since 2006. “Warren is a team that could come up and bite anybody,” Perez said. “They are much improved. Downey perennially always has talent and Paramount is always tough and gritty. Any way you slice it, you’re going to have to show up and you’re going to have to play one pitch at a time for seven innings.” JOHN GLENN EAGLES (11-14 overall last season, 5-7 in the Suburban League, fifth place) Head coach: Jack Brooks (second season, 11-14) Team’s record previous five seasons: 53-72 Last time made the playoffs: 2009 Key losses: Ronaldo Acuna, Jesse Gutierrez, Robert King, John Lemos Projected lineup: P-Cesar Arzate (SR)/Devin Galindo (SR)/Rene Gaytan (SR)/Luis Rojas (SO)/ Victor Sanchez (SO) C-Abel Landa (SR)/Arturo Loera (SR) 1B-Arzate/Frank Rodarte (SR) 2B-Ricky Padilla (SR) 3B-Angel Chavez (SO)/Gaytan/Martin Sandoval (JR) SS-Rosas OF-Ryan Rodriguez (SR) OF-Loera/Rodarte/Sanchez OF-Galindo With only 25 guys in the entire John Glenn program last season, it was definitely a trying campaign for Jack Brooks. However, after a 2-7 start, the Eagles turned it around in the last month and a half and just fell short of the playoffs. This season, Brooks looks for much better results, especially with a strong pitching staff. “It was a season of growth and a season of change program-wise,” Brooks said. “A lot of young guys got a lot of big time experience. We lost three seniors who were a big part of the offense last year. But I like our club and I like how we’re working.” Senior Cesar Arzate and sophomore Victor Sanchez will pace the pitching staff, which is deep with three other returning players. Senior Arturo Loera, who was the team’s center fielder last season, is the new catcher while senior Rene Gaytan moves from first base to third base and sophomore Luis Rosas shifts from third base to shortstop. Brooks says the key to this season is executing on the offensive side. Of the seven league losses, one was by a run, one by two runs and another by three runs and two league games went into extra innings, both resulting in 3-2 victories. “The expectation level was No. 1, commitment is 1A and the numbers have grown,” Brooks said of this season. “We’ve grown about 10 kids in the program. That doesn’t seem huge but coming from 26 in the program to over 30 is big for us.” NORWALK LANCERS (12-15 overall last season, 6-6 in the Suburban League, fourth place, lost to Upland
TO ADVERTISE CALL 800-901-7211 22-2 in the Division II wild card) Head coach: Ruben Guerrero (first season) Team’s record previous five seasons: 56-70 Last time missed the playoffs: 2009 Key losses: Matthew Ortega, Jacob Salas, Jose Sandoval, German Vasquez Projected lineup: P-Andy Caro (SR)/Fernando DeLuna (JR)/Miguel Castaneda (SR)/Carlos Garcia (JR)/Anthony Gonzalez (SR)/ Jesse Rodriguez (SR) C-Joseph Borjorquez (SR) 1B-Faustino Colon (JR) 2B-Castaneda/Manuel Garcia (JR) 3B-Caro/DeLuna SS-Jesse Rodriguez (SR)/Manual Garcia OF-Jacob Carr (SO) OF-Trino Romero (JR) OF-Gonzalez/Tyler McCalman (SR) A blast from the past comes in as the new Norwalk head coach as Ruben Guerrero replaces Ruben Velasquez, who took the Lancers to the playoffs the last three seasons. Guerrero previously coached at Norwalk as well as John Glenn and graduated from Norwalk in 1993. “I’m very excited and looking to just continue the success they’ve had here,” Guerrero said. “I’m grateful for the opportunity. “It’s been a very easy transition,” he continued. “Early on in my career, I started here at Norwalk High School and then transitioned over to John Glenn High School. So I’m pretty familiar with the Suburban League and the value of competition that it brings.” Guerrero inherits a very experienced team that is hoping to get out of that fourth/fifth place spot it has held since 2008. Senior Anthony Gonzalez and junior Carlos Garcia will be the two primary pitchers with the latter posting an ERA of 1.50 last season. When he’s not pitching, senior Andy Caro (.341 last season) is a solid third baseman. The rest of the infield is just as strong with senior second baseman Miguel Castaneda, senior shortstop Jesse Rodriguez and junior first baseman Faustino Colon the likely starters. Junior Trino Romero anchors the outfield with sophomore Jacob Carr returning in left. Sophomores Hector Amaya and Pete Hernandez will be battling for a roster spot. The Lancers batted .238 last season but with the 13 returning players, this has the makings of a .300-plus hitting tram that can challenge the likes of La Mirada and Mayfair for one of the top spots in league. “As a group, we’ve sat down and analyzed the very topic of [league placement],” Guerrero said. “We just want to go out and do the best we can and play with a lot of confidence and intensity. As a club, we think that’s one area we need to improve on and we do have a goal of winning a league title for Norwalk High School. It’s been about 17 years.” VALLEY CHRISTIAN CRUSADERS (16-12 overall last season, 10-2 in the Olympic League, first place, lost to Woodcrest Christian 2-1 (8 innings) in Division V second round) Head coach: Sean Buller (third season, 23-30) Team’s record previous five seasons: 58-77-1 Last time missed the playoffs: 2010 Key losses: Dylan Algra, Brian Burgin, Anthony Nocera, Shane Stillwagon Projected lineup: P-Liam Bestian (SR)/Troy Craddock (JR)/Clayton Granch (SR)/Tyler McLurg (SR)/Nico Morandini (SR) C-Granch/McLurg 1B-Brian Bischoff (JR)/Craddock/ Granch/Morandini/Mitchell Torres (JR) 2B-Bestian/Kevin Sainz (SO) 3B-Patrick Avila (SR)/Jack Struiksma

FESTIVAL OF COLORS: Holi Arrives at Excelsior High School this Saturday By Randy Economy This weekend marks the celebration called “Holi” that will bring thousands to celebrate “the Festival of Colors” at Excelsior High School Stadium this Saturday, March 16th. During the “Holi” celebration at Alondra and Pioneer Boulevard in Norwalk, members of the Indo-American, and of all faiths and ethnic groups will be attending the daylong celebration that marks the arrival of spring and the passing of winter. Event organizers say that “the festival breathes an atmosphere of social merriment. People bury their hatchets with a warm embrace and throw their worries to the wind. Every nook and corner presents a colorful sight. Young and old alike are covered with colors red, green, yellow, blue, black and silver.” There will be nonstop live music from great bands, yoga, mantras, dance, cuisine, and the throwing of dry colors on friend and foe alike. Holi has long traditional linked with several “legends.” Holi is celebrated with special importance in the North of India. It solemnizes the love of Radha and Krishna.
