MFA Thesis Project 2011-2012 The product is designed to give a person the experience of simulating the 4 different senses while playing arcade and connecting with the players worldwide. The product will have gaming devices such as interactive touch sense vest, gloves and helmet that can provide more senses to interactive with other players.

PROBLEM STATEMENT / PROJECT GOAL

Social gaming addicted

Hikikomori’s room

People spent too much time for online gaming 50% Americans play online social games for 6 hours per day and there is a social phenomenon called Hikikomori in Japan that people who lock themselves at home play online games without interaction with people physically.


Why not go out paly arcade with friends and family? I want to create a device that will restore the balance between virtual and actual experiences. It will use the four senses in the context of an arcade

game machine that is designed to enhance relationships in real life.

1ST MOCK UP

IDEATION MOCK UPS - MAIN CONSOLE

DOME-LIKE DESIGN

The first mock up uses the dome-like private area idea to enclose the area for gamers not being interrupted by others. The two sides of the console is the storage for the gaming devices. The back of the console is the main operation system which includes a computer and a smell printer and a motion detection system. For the smell test, I put the air refresher inside the back of the mock up to simulate the smell printer.

2ND MOCK UP

OPEN AREA DESIGN

The second mock up is to design an open area to let the companions accompany the gamers playing the arcade machine. The hanger in between the front and the back cabin is for putting the gaming devices. The front cabin is the main operation system which includes a computer, a smell printer and a coin operator. The motion detection system is mounting on the top of the 80� LED screen in the back. For the 3D display, it will put beside the front cabin. The front cabin is also designed to have a touch screen for user to operate this device.

Base on the second mock up and the feedback from the instructor, the device is to build a full size of the mock up which can let me fully understand the real user’s environment and the storage space. For the third mock up, at the back of the console, I will use the 80” LED screen to create the background images. And in front of the screen, it will have a 3D display system.

1ST MOCKUP FUNCTIONAL AND HALF COVER REQUEST MOCK UP The second mock up refine the size of the ear pad to become bigger and extend it in to a space which can attach the cheek vibration pad. In order to test the vibration function, I brought the vibrator and put inside the mock-up to do the user testing about the vibration feedback if it is strong enough to represent the punch feedback. Most of the users think the vibration feedback is enough especially for the cheek part. At the beginning of the mock-up, it only have back elastic band to hold with the head but after the user testing, the top of the head should have an elastic strip to hold the helmet with the head.

1ST MOCK UP FUNCTIONAL MOCK UP For the first mock-up of the glove, a boxing glove is used. A vibrator is placed in the glove to test the sense of a punch. Due to the fact that there is no computer software to operate the timing of vibration upon a punch, I have to stand next to the user and turn on the vibrator whenever they wave a punch.

2ST SIMPLIFYING MOCK UP MATERIALS The second mock-up of the glove is to focus on resolving the cleanliness issue. This mock-up uses fewer materials which cover lesser areas of the hand. This way of design should reduce the contact space between hands and the gloves to obtain optimal cleanliness.


3RD MOCK UP

LESS TOUCHED

The third mock up is to combine the functionality with minimal material designs. Only two PE strips with Velcro attachment are used for size adjustment. A loop is positioned in the front of the glove for the two middle fingers to hook on, providing better vibration feedback. The disadvantage of this design is that the separated strips are difficult to be attached with only one hand.

1ST MOCK UP

IDEATION MOCK UPS - VEST

AIR COMPRESSOR FUNCTIONAL MOCK UP

At the initial stage of the design, an air bladder and an air compressor are used to simulate the punching sensation. During the simulation, the air gun is to shoot air into the air bladder in various pressures. The final result shows that the air bladder can only withhold 70 psi before it finally explodes. Also at 70 psi, the user feels the optimal sensation of a punch. The air bladder should use thicker ABS rubber for the material, which will be durable and expendable enough for a long term use.

SOLENOID FUNCTIONAL MOCK UP

The air compressed based haptic system comes with numerous disadvantages. The air compressor is too noisy and the air tank is too big causing inconveniences for a long term use. With research, I discovered that a student’s research from the University of Pennsylvania called Tactile Gaming Vest (TGV), which uses electric solenoid to simulate gunshot feedback, might suit my need for the haptic feedback system.


3RD MOCK UP WOOFER FUNCTIONAL MOCK UP The previous mock up shows that the solenoids are too heavy and the system had mechanical issues. To resolve those issues, I contacted the inventor of the Tactile Gaming Vest (TGV) called Saurabh Palan, who is a robotic engineer currently working in Palo Alto. He gave me a new idea about using the woofer to create the haptic feedback by using low frequency sounds. Not only will the woofer be easy to install and maintain, it also provides sound during the gaming. I took his suggestion and installed the 3� woofer into the mock-up. The amplifier that plays the low frequency sound vibrations the woofer as indicated. Although this installation is still heavy, it is within the range of the acceptable weight.

Product Design Project / 2008 “Alessi Power Lamp” is a bed lamp with a stand that provides extra power outlets. The goal of this product is to let users charge their mobile devices by the bed without the mess of tangled cords. The simplicity of the exterior design and elegant geometric shape also reflect the Alessi’s design spirit.

is a com-

mon problem for most people that use power strip at home. Nowadays, people use multiple mobile devices and need to charge them before going to bed. The bedside table usually blocks the outlets and makes it even more difficult to manage the tangled cords.


Ideation Sketch

The ideation and direction is based on the Alessi’s sprit and shape study. The lamp’s functionality and its modern design makes it an ideal product for any home environment.

Inspiration This product is inspired by AUDI R8’s design. The aim of this work is to express the streamline of the shoes, its stylish design as well practicability. I used AUDI R8’s grille frame opening idea for the toe cap and the side trims to allow air ventilation on the front part of the shoes. As for the outer sole, I placed a friction-resistant rubber there to increase the shoes’ stability when it use. The side of the shoes shows a transformation from AUDI R8’s side plaque to the decorative ankle straps; the grille frame, again, acts as the idea of ventilation for the body of the shoes. The heel patch represents the tail design, using the car’s deco strips as the heel’s covering straps. Finally, the tail light is symbolized by the decorative logo on the back of the shoes.
