Algae still Up in smoke floating F around by Dawnmarie Fehr Correspondent

Ongoing testing for cyanobacteria, or blue-green algae blooms, in Discovery Bay is still underway, with results expected sometime this week from the Central Valley Regional Water Quality Control Board (CVRWQCB). In July, Contra Costa Health Services (CCHS) and CVRWQCB had warned Discovery Bay Delta residents and visitors that the blooms had been found in the private bays of Discovery Bay. The county tested waters in response to resident complaints on July 22. Since then, other local agencies, including the East Bay Regional Parks District (EBRPD), have tested for and found toxins in other bay area bodies of water, including the Delta waters of Big Break Regional Shoreline in Oakley. “We will call the problem gone once we have two sets of clean samples,” said Dr. Marilyn Underwood, Contra Costa County’s director of environmental health. “We took the first set last week – we took 20 samples – and hopefully, it will be clean. Visually, the waters look clearer.”

irefighters from East Contra Costa Fire Protection District (ECCFPD) were called to a house fire in Discovery Bay early Wednesday morning, Sept. 21, where they discovered a marijuana grow operation inside. A fire alarm going off in the house, located on the 2400 block of Aberdeen Lane, alerted a neighbor, who called 911 around 7:22 a.m. ECCFPD Engine 59 arrived to find black smoke and flames coming from a second-story bedroom in the front of the home, which is where they believe the fire started. Firefighters determined the residence was unoccupied as they made entry, and they Photo by Tony Kukulich uncovered evidence of what appeared to be an operation to grow marijuana, including lights and an extensive ventilation system.

Judgment awarded in vehicle-fatality case by Ruth Roberts Staff Writer

Three years after 12-year-old Burgess Hu was struck and killed by an SUV on his way to Excelsior Middle School in Bryon, the California State Superior Court has awarded his family a $1.25 million judgment. The ruling, which was entered on May 16, was made against Brandy Woolman, the driver of the vehicle. The judgment also stipulates that Burgess was without fault in his own

death. “We can’t bring people back, but this is a step toward closure for the dad, and that’s an important one,” said Scott Sumner, Hu’s attorney. “It’s closer to justice and (the judgment) certainly backs up what was important to the father. In particular, that Burgess didn’t cause his own death and that the driver was responsible. Those things were important.” No criminal charges were ever filed against Woolman in the see Judgment page 34
