In late winter and early spring, expectations for an outstanding cherry season were high as the crop began to take shape, but recent cool, wet weather has local farmers scrambling to preserve the promise of high crop yields. The late-season rains present two problems: rain sitting on growing cherries can cause the skin to split, ruining the fruit, and it can cut short the already brief cherry season by dissuading customers from coming out. Muddy parking lots and orchards are less than ideal on U-pick farms, and many farms closed this past weekend or have delayed their opening until the fields begin to dry out. But despite the challenges and some crop loss, farmers remain optimistic about the remainder of the season. “I don’t think we’ve had a total left turn,” said Jessica Enos, marketing director for 5 Star Cherries. “Clearly there’s been rain. Clearly the farmers are out there doing everything they can to mitigate the damage and still see Cherries page 22A

It didn’t take long for Brentwood’s new Assistant City Manager, Terrence Grindall, to earn the trust of his colleagues – about a month into his new job, he was handed the agency’s keys as acting city manager, while Gus Vina was on vacation. The keys weren’t Grindall’s for long, but when he assumes his everyday position, his impact will be felt: he’s gearing up to drive forward the city’s economic development. “I am very excited to be coming to Brentwood,” he said. “There are a lot of opportunities here.” The 29-year economic development veteran, who previously served as Newark’s assistant city manager and community develop-
ment director, steps into a longvacant Brentwood role. His annual salary will be $202,024. “He has many years and great experience in land-use policy, community development and economic development,” said City Manager Gus Vina during his official city introduction. Grindall is once again thrust into the center of a city’s economic development, which includes everything from community marketing and retailer attraction, to streamlining development processes and organizing events. Just a handful of early goals include: promoting Brentwood’s development potential; increasing the city’s per-capita sales tax base through retail recruitment; and attracting high-quality local jobs. “It’s very important in this

community to get quality jobs into the city,” Grindall said. Grindall’s previous industry stints, which included stops in Manteca and San Jose, were characterized by the arrival of high-profile companies, including Facebook and Bass Pro Shops. But he’s quick to point out that his greatest achievement has been behind-the-scenes work to streamline development. One facet of that success, he says, is the rudimentary city processes and plans that recognize and speed up economic development opportunities. Lunch program coming in June The kids are home for the summer and looking for something to do and eat, but instead of having them raiding your cupboards, join in at two Brentwood area locations for a wholesome and free meal for all kids and teens (ages 2 to 18). The Brentwood Union School District (BUSD) continues to serve at Village Community Resource Center with kids’ favorites ranging from hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken sandwiches, burritos and pizza, to name
a few. This year, the district has added Veterans Park as a location to serve the kids in our community this summer. They will have a great menu of hot and cold lunch options, including barbecue hamburgers and cheeseburgers on Tuesdays and barbecue hotdogs on Thursday. In addi-
tion to a great meal, fun free interactive activities will be offered daily, including the chance to make their own smoothie riding the smoothie bike and nutrition inspired art project. There are no enrollment, paperwork or income qualifications required to participate. Lunch must be eaten

New bus barn goes up on Liberty campus “ We are excited about

The Liberty Union High School District is getting a new building for its facilities, maintenance and operations department (FMOD). Since last November, construction has been ongoing to move this sprawling department off Liberty’s campus, to the corner of Oak Street and Larkspur Lane in Brentwood. The move will give the FMOD employees more room to work on buses and maintenance vehicles, among other tasks. Fondly called a “bus barn,” the large building is slated for completion this September. “We are excited that this is happening,” said District Superintendent Eric Volta. “We wanted to upgrade what we have now to last for the next 50 or 60 years. It will be nice to improve the Liberty campus.” Volta added that FMOD’s 40 employees don’t currently have a break room, training center or adequate space to perform their work. “All of our maintenance and transportation needs will all be on one site,” Volta said. “Our mechanics will all be able to work in a real garage on multiples buses, and perform maintenance on mowers and all the other things that go into having three school sites. We are excited about a lot of the improvements that will be happening on Oak and Second streets over the

In addition to Liberty’s bus barn, Measure U monies will fund 16 classrooms and additional parking at each of the three school sites. Heritage High is slated for a culinary arts building with a greenhouse, Liberty will welcome a new aquatic center, and Oakley’s Freedom High receives a new performing arts theater. Beyond those higher-profile projects, a laundry list of repairs, upgrades and se-
curity features will be implemented across the district. “When we passed that bond three years ago, we wanted to somewhat equalize our school sites,” Volta explained. “Liberty is unique in that it needs a lot more to make it equal to the other sites ... We decided if we moved transportation to the corner, we would have more room on campus for parking and an aquatic center.” Paul Melloni is the district’s director of facilities and one of the employees directly benefiting from the new building. He

said maintenance work will get easier and more convenient, once his department is able to move into the barn. “The new space will be a three-bay building, instead of a one-bay like we have now,” Melloni said. “This will improve our operations because we won’t be on campus anymore, in the mix with the kids. And Liberty gets a larger campus.” Melloni said the project is currently on track, despite some delays over the winter, caused by rain. When it opens, the completed project will include two buildings: the large bus and transportation building and the maintenance building. The department handles operations for all three schools in the district. More art pieces will soon take shape around town by Kyle Szymanski Staff Writer
Brentwood officials recently put the finishing touches on a refined list of future public art locations. The multi-phase, nine-project series, prioritized by the city’s art commission, and later approved by the city council, includes plans for pieces at key city entrances, at the library, along the Dainty Avenue and Central Boulevard creek area, on the hill west of the Highway 4 bypass and various other locations. The projects will be funded through the city’s public-art program, which requires developers and public projects to either add art as part of their work, or pay an in-lieu fee. Nearly $2.7 million currently sits in the two funds, combined.
“Brentwood is fortunate to be uniquely situated, as many California towns of similar size have no public-art voice,� said City Art Commissioner Brian Carleton. The locations are identified through an exhaustive process involving city staff identifying city-owned parcels as potential locations, and then the five-member arts commission reviews and prioritizes based on several factors, including traffic counts, proximity to other public art installations and future development in the area. Key changes to the updated document, last modified in 2017, removes the nowcompleted effort to beautify 16 city utility boxes, and organizes plans for art at the library, civic center, City Park and downtown into separate efforts.

I’ve been in a car accident that wasn’t my fault. What should I do? By Maria Pappas-Rajotte, Esq. Call the police and make a report. Even if it is clear that the accident was not your fault you should always call the police and make a report of the accident. Some police departments will refuse to come to the scene of the accident unless someone is injured but a record of your call will still be available. Don’t assume you are not injured. A car accident is a traumatic experience, which can cause a multitude of feelings including fear, shock and anger. A release of adrenaline is usually your body’s first physical reaction during such an experience. Because of this “adrenaline rush” you may not feel injured at the scene. Many injuries do not manifest themselves until a few hours after the accident, or even a couple of days later. Don’t assume that you are not injured at the accident scene. Seek medical treatment right away if you feel injured. Do take pictures at the scene of the accident. Take pictures of your vehicle and the other driver’s vehicle. It is also a good idea to take a picture of their drivers license and their insurance information. Don’t give a recorded statement to the other driver’s insurance company. Do not provide a recorded statement to the other driver’s insurance company without first consulting with an attorney. Many insurance adjusters will ask you questions that you do not understand, that may be confusing or that try to minimize your injuries. Do fill out a DMV Traffic Accident Report SR 1 after an accident if the total damage to your car is more than $1000.00 or someone is injured or killed. You have ten days to fill out the DMV SR 1, whether you caused

the accident or not. The SR 1 form is available on the DMV website at www.dmv.ca.gov and can be filled out directly online, printed out and sent to the DMV from the comfort of your own home. If you fail to submit a completed SR 1 to the DMV, the DMV can suspend your drivers license. Don’t post about your accident on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. While you may think that your accident is post-worthy because your car looks like you should not have walked away, you would be surprised at how far insurance companies will go to pay you as little as possible for any injuries you might have as a result of the accident. “They will be handled as separate projects instead of one giant project,” said Recreation Manager Kris Farro. The list begins with two sculptures, slated for the Sand Creek median in front of the Streets of Brentwood and along Brentwood Boulevard, near the Brentwood Police Station and the palm-tree landscaped area. Both will hopefully be completed by the end of the year, Farro said. Davis McCarty’s “Branch Out,” along the Sand Creek Road median, will feature intricately carved branches twisting organically into the sky, with the tree motif paying homage to Brentwood’s agricultural history and suggesting that the city has the freedom to grow into a new identity. Douwe Blumberg’s “Fields of Time,” near the police station, will showcase a wide variety of elements, including tractors, farm workers and ranchers, intended to represent the area’s agriculture evolution in a fun and visually interesting, linear-timeline approach. The locations and designs were both narrowed down by an ad-hoc subcommittee composed of city council and art commission members, and later approved by the full art commission and city council. “Initially we put the call out nationally, not just locally, so that we could get a broad variety of artists, and we did,” said Art Commissioner Cindy Lee, a member of the subcommittee. “We narrowed it down and reviewed over 180 artists.” Both pieces are unique, Lee added. “Davis McCarty’s work was very con-
temporary and forward-thinking, which I really liked and see Brentwood moving towards,” she said. “Douwe Blumberg’s piece really represented the past, present and future of Brentwood farming, which I know will be pleasing to the people who have lived in Brentwood all their lives.” McCarty and Blumberg are eligible to receive up to $175,000 for their work, which includes artwork design, fabrication, delivery, installation and travel. The city council is expected to finalize a contract with Blumberg by the end of this month or early next month, and with McCarty in late June or early July, Farro said. “I think both of the art pieces will be very attractive,” said Brentwood City Councilmember Karen Rarey. “I really like the second one near the entrance to our town that depicts the history of ag’ in our area. I think that is a great way to welcome people into Brentwood.” Another project on the horizon involves the possible installation of up to 60 art pieces in the library, Carleton said. The nonprofit Brentwood Library Foundation has contributed $88,065 toward the effort. A call for artwork is scheduled for the summer, with installation likely occurring in the fall, Farro said. Other future projected art locations include the roundabout just past Garin Parkway, near Oak Street and Lott Drive; on the corner of Oak Street and Walnut Boulevard; and on the northeast corner of Sand Creek Road and O’Hara Avenue. The event will raise money for women rebuilding their lives, creating a successful future for themselves and their children. This year, the Shirley Ann Foundation is partnering with Shepherd’s Gate with the goal of raising $50,000 for the nonprofit organization to help fund programming and living expenses for residents. Guests at the black-tie event, will enjoy a three-course meal catered by Scott’s Seafood and enjoying the live music of The Breakfast Klub. The event will also include a silent and live auctions. The Shirley Ann Foundation is a nonprofit, fundraising organization inspired
by the desire to honor the founders’ mothers. The mission is to provide resources to women and children in the community who are fighting for a fresh start and a second chance. The Shirley Ann Foundation is recognized as a cornerstone for mothers in the Bay Area who are compelled to rebuild their lives after struggling with addiction, surviving abuse or working to overcome homelessness. Funding provided through the organization is used to help women and their children create a successful future that might not otherwise be available to them. John and Carisa Zink founded IT Avalon, a women-owned IT staffing firm nearly seven years ago. Last cattle drive for Alameda County Fair Hundreds of hooves will tromp through the streets of downtown Pleasanton for the final time as the Alameda County Fair hosts the ‘last ride’ of its opening day cattle drive. The event will feature over 150 large steers parading down Main Street, as well as a procession of cowfolk, fair entertainers and more. The cattle drive begins at 10:30 a.m. on June 14 and will run from the fairgrounds through downtown Pleasanton. This will be the final opportunity for people to witness a real, live cattle drive through a major urban area.

Sept. 18, 1936 – May 7, 2019 Lloyd James Glieden, 82, passed away on May 7, 2019, at his ranch in Kalispell, Montana, surrounded by his family. He has gone up to Heaven to be with his son, Lance, and grandson, Griffin. Lloyd leaves behind his wife of 60 years, Beverly Kay Glieden, four living children and their spouses and eight living grandchildren: Eric Glieden, wife Cyndy Glieden and children Justin and Ashely; Kristen Broughton, husband Michael Broughton and children Gabriel and Alexandra; Heather Sloan, husband Ronald Sloan and children Isabella, Abigail and Luke; and Shannon Glieden and daughter Olivia Shelton. Lloyd moved from Oakley in 2015 to
retire in Kalispell, where he loved to fish, explore, look at nature and tend to his herd of Texas longhorn cattle. Lloyd was loved and admired by many. Burial services were held at Bigfork Community Cemetery, in Bigfork, Montana, on May 21, 2019.

She retired from Sutter Delta Memorial Hospital in 2011. Nancy was full of life and always energetic. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, sewing and camping. She always looked forward to the annual family camping trip to Markleeville, California.

Déjà vu all over again?
Editor: Several years ago, a ‘Measure F’ was placed on our local election ballot, proposing to move our urban limit line (ULL) to make way for the construction of thousands of new homes in the Balfour and Deer Valley area. Various unattainable goals were included as enticements to get (it) passed. Measure F was a farce and was soundly defeated at the ballot box by our thoughtful citizens. Well, here we go again. This time, it’s Blackhawk Nunn Partners trying to gather petition signatures, proposing a ballot initiative to move the ULL west, so 2,400 homes can be built over time in a similar area to the ‘F’ proposal. Again, various immediately unattainable enticements are included in the slick marketing for this project, ‘The Vineyards at Deer Creek.’ Never mind that several efforts in the past to move the ULL have been shot down by the voters; never mind that the city’s general plan (a thoughtful long-range plan for city growth) already includes development in the same area on a much smaller scale; never mind that the city already has thousands of homes in the development queue. These developers’ efforts continue to insult the intelligence of our residents. Developers, what part of ‘no’ don’t you understand? Citizens of Brentwood, please be cautious of petition signature gatherer’ claims and their behavior, and don’t sign a petition to allow this threat to our quality of life to be put on the ballot. Rain and conversations It rained here all weekend, which for this area is very unusual. After all, it’s May in California, and the clouds were not getting the message that it’s time for sunshine, warm weather and clear skies. As I looked out my Senior window, ready to orner be slightly annoyed, I heard the phone ring, and it was one of my grandsons calling from Tennessee. Immediately, I began to enjoy the steady sound of the Marla rain, along with my Luckhardt slightly darkened living room. I stopped my indoor chores and plopped myself down on the couch to spend some time on the phone with him. We talked for over half an hour about everything and anything, and I realized just how important that relationship is. The generation gap between this old hippie and my sweet millennial did not apply as we chatted away about life. I consider myself extremely lucky that he keeps me involved and feels free to talk about any subject with me. This is true for all of the grands, and I treasure every call or visit. Grandparents and great grandparents should always be there to listen when these children and young adults reach out for support and encouragement. They should be comfortable to share their feelings without fear of judgment or chastisement. If you read my resume, it is based solely on the grandparent handbook. Of course, there is not really one of these books, nor do I have a resume at this point, but if there was, it would reiterate that, I am sure. The interesting part of the grandchild and grandparent relationship is that there is not a lot of difference between us at all. At his age, he is finding his way through the combination of school, work and living away from home. At that age, I did too. We spoke about relationships, what he is really looking for in his future and how the person he will spend his life with should be more than just a pretty face. His thoughts, but I concurred, of course. I knew that too, and even though Grandpa was much more than just a pretty face, he was indeed awfully handsome (he still is). My grandson brought up finances and how being on his own for the most part is a juggling act from paycheck to paycheck. He has his first apartment, which means rent, utilities, food and car expenses just to mention the basics. I too, had my first apartment around his age and could totally empathize. He asked advice about investing when he saves

up enough for it to make sense, while assuring me he has been socking money away for his future. Since he was a small child, we always told him to spend a little, save a lot. I had wonderful grandparents. They spoiled me as much as they could, but I never doubted the love and protection they afforded me. I felt safe with them, unconditionally. My grandmother would take my hand, and in hers would be a few dollars. She would whisper to me, “Here’s some spending money, don’t tell your grandfather.” He would then do the same thing five minutes later, and I can assure you, they both knew what the other was doing. It was a sweet game, but I was certainly not going to say a thing. The grandchildren they had were their world, and we felt it every time they hugged us. I try to emulate them as much as possible. I want the grandchildren to know that I am here for them no matter what. I hope they all know that all they have to do is call and I am there. It’s in that job description that I mentioned and I take it very seriously. Many of my peers have been blessed with grandchildren. I see dozens of posts on Facebook from my grandma friends and grandpas too. These are the posts that I enjoy the most, since it is pure unconditional love that promotes the dozens of pictures and videos. We all need to do our job as grandparents – not to smother, but to be there. Not to intrude, but to catch them when they start to fall. Not to disrupt their lives, but to ease the growing pains and listen with both ears and our one heart. Not to overstay our welcome, but to enjoy the moments that we have with them. We are their comfort zone. A phone call or a visit or a card means the world to a grandparent, and most of the time, that is all we need in return. When this grandchild was a little boy, he told me that a grandparent has a few jobs. They are there to love, kiss, hug, spoil and repeat when necessary. The sixth-seed Heritage baseball team entered its quarterfinal playoff game as underdogs with third-seed Acalanes May 17. But the Patriots did anything but play the part. The Patriots’ Bryce Arana went 2 for 3 with two RBI, Keith Jones drove in another run, and pitchers Reece Dexter and Jeffrey Heinrich held the Dons to one run on four hits, as Heritage emerged 5-1 winners. Heritage (20-6) was scheduled to travel to second-seed Amador Valley at 5 p.m. on Wednesday for the right to play for a North Coast Section Division 1 championship. “These guys are just really resilient, and they got the job done,” said Heritage head coach Kevin Brannan. Arana’s sixth-inning RBI single, scoring Ryan Troye, broke a one-all tie, and the Patriots padded their lead with three runs in the top of the seventh while batting around to pull out the victory. Starter Dexter held the Dons (233) to one run on four hits and struck out five in 4/2/3 innings, before Heinrich held Acalanes hitless the rest of the way while striking out two. “When Heinrich came in, you could just tell he really wanted the ball, and we kind of just let him go and do his thing,” Brannan said. “He was on tonight, and that is going to be big going forward — that confidence he can carry over into the next game and hopefully beyond that.” Heritage cycled through four Dons’ pitchers, with four runs coming off Nick

The Patriots’ Ryan Jackson went 3 for 3 at the plate with a run scored, and Tom Rover, Chaz Myers, Casey Turturici, and Troye each added a hit. Jones’ third-inning sacrifice fly off Dons’ starter Logan Hurd scored Myers, giving Heritage a 1-0 lead, but Cole Murgia’s fifth-inning double off Dexter scored Davis Diaz to tie the game at one for the Dons. But the Patriots immediately bounced back. Arana’s sixth-inning single, scoring Troye from second, gave Heritage a
2-1 lead, and three more Patriots runs crossed the plate in the seventh, when Heritage racked up three singles and three walks—all the hits and two of the walks off Kresnak—and sent nine batters to the plate. Jackson’s single, the third of three to lead off the inning, scored Rover to put Heritage up 3-1, and a wild pitch and a bases-loaded walk later in the inning brought home Heritage’s fourth and fifth runs. “They [the Patriots] feed off each other,” Brannan said. “We got that little rally going and just kept it going.” Heritage now turns its attention to
second-seed Amador Valley (22-4) for the right to play the winner of top-seed De La Salle (27-1) for the North Coast Section Division 1 title. “They (Amador Valley) are a quality club,” Brannan said. “They are a wellcoached team. We played them before in the playoffs. I am not expecting anything but a good, quality club when we show up on Wednesday. BVAL athletes move on to state track championship by Michael Dixon Correspondent
The best track and field athletes the North Coast Section (NCS) has to offer gathered at Diablo Valley College for the ultra-competitive NCS Meet of Champions (MOC) last weekend. The ultimate goal for every athlete at the MOC was to perform well enough to make the state meet. The Bay Valley Athletic League (BVAL) will be represented at state in five different events. Four of those representatives will be from Pittsburg, while the other will be from Antioch. Pirates senior John Maka was the only BVAL athlete to win a MOC event. He finished first in the discus at 181 feet, 3 inches. Junior Trinity Bolden came in third
in the 100-meter race at 12.18 seconds. Panthers sophomore Jailen Weaver placed sixth in the shot put (48 feet, 4 3/4 inches). All three will be in the state meet. Pittsburg will also send both 4×100 relay teams to state. The girls team of junior Elaija Danridge, sophomore Ariane Nelson, junior Aqeelah Hasim and Bolden finished second at the MOC with a time of 48.81. Meanwhile, the boys team of sophomore Clarence Strong, senior Willie Harts III, junior Jonzi Smith, and senior Jalen Adams came in third at 43.09. While no other BVAL athletes qualified for state, a number of others stood out as among the NCS’s best. The league showed particularly strong in the boys discus and long jump events. In both cases, three BVAL athletes finished in the top 10. Behind Maka in the discus was Weav-
er, who came in third with a distance of 165-08.00. Liberty sophomore Akili Calhoun placed ninth at 136-00.00. In the long jump, Freedom senior Giovanni Larrea came in fourth (22-03.50), Pittsburg senior Premier Murphy finished seventh (22-11.50), while Deer Valley’s Patrick Robinson took 10th place (21-06.25). Larrea also came in 10th in the triple jump (4211.25). Finishing right behind Pittsburg in the boys 4×100 relay was Antioch. The quartet of Jayson Wade, Ahmon Jones, Brandon Canty and Aaron Lacy took fourth with a time of 43.40. Heritage showed well in the girls 4×400 relay. The team of Sabrina Rogers, Kaya Scott, Lauren Lane and Mariah Lang placed ninth (4:22.28). Patriots senior Ingrid Neukirchen finished seventh in
the girls 100 meters (12.32) and fifth in the 200 meters (25.57). In the boys 800-meter race, Heritage junior Gabriel Preciado took notched a sixth-place finish (1:57.86). Naturally, members of both of Pittsburg’s state relay teams also did well in individual races. Nelson took ninth in both the 100-meter dash (12.55) and 100-meter hurdles (18.56). Bolden, meanwhile, finished only one spot behind Neukirchen in the 200 (25.64). On the boys side, Smith took fifth in the 110-meter hurdles (15.62), while Adams posted a seventh-place finish in the 200 (22.92). Pirates senior Gabriella Serrianni also finished sixth in the shot put (36-02.50). The state championship meet will be held May 24-25 at Buchanan High School in Clovis.

Other notables entered in the Northern California Classic are Haugen, who finished third in 2018, and PBA hall of famers Bryan Goebel, Amleto Monacelli (2015 and 2017 Northern California Classic winner), Parker Bohn III, Tom Baker (2014 winner) and Norm Duke. Williams currently leads the PBA50 Tour points list with 18,930 points — 10,330 ahead of Haugen’s 8,660. Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Hall of Famer Walter Ray Williams, Jr., who owns the PBA Tour alltime career titles mark of 47, will be trying for a record 15th career PBA50 Tour title. If successful, he will hold the alltime titles lead for both of PBA’s national tours. Williams is currently tied at 14 with fellow Hall of Famer John Handegard for most PBA50 Tour titles. Thumb fit is key to bowling success In my travels as a professional coach, I see many elements of our game that are in need of correction or adjustment, but far and away, the most common is an incorrect fit of the bowler’s thumb. A span can be too short or too long, and occasionally, the Keglers pitches are askew, orner but nearly without exception, the thumb is a problem. A correctly fitted thumb is essential for allowing a relaxed swing without having to ‘grip’ the ball. Gripping the ball Duane tightens all the muscles Wilson of the arm and creates ‘steering’ of the natural plane of motion, which leads to greater inconsistency. When your pro shop operator delivers a ball to you after a fitting, all that should be left is a minor sanding and edge bevel for the near perfect fit, but many players take it upon themselves afterward to sand and grind away at the thumb to open it up to a looser fit. This spells disaster for their game by starting an endless task of tape in their hole, commercial texture tapes and the worst … powder. The thumb is the cornerstone of a good fit and without argument, the most difficult part of a drillers task when fitting a customer’s ball for a simple reason – no two are alike other than in function. They come

in a variety of shapes; straight, conical and what I call the ‘toe thumb,’ where the knuckle is wider than the base. A correctly fitted thumb should be snug, very snug, but not tight. In the words of the great Walter Ray Williams, a correctly fitted thumb is one where a player should be able to insert it into the ball and let it hang without dropping it. They should be able to walk to the line and deliver the ball with only the thumb in the ball. Yes folks, that snug. If it’s oversized or all powdered up, this isn’t going to happen. Even this snug, if your pitches are correct, the ball will come off by the force of the swing alone. It’s a delicate balance, and that’s where tapes come into play for maintaining that balance as our
hands contract and expand beyond the baseline fit. Some players have perspiration issues or swelling after extended play, so they opt for a slightly looser fit and build back up with white tape, but if I see more than three pieces of tape in a hole, the base fit needs correction. I’ve seen over 10 pieces in a thumb! Solutions to the constant adjustment syndrome are interchangeable grips for one. These grips can be quickly inserted and removed with a tool and are drilled in variants to the base size in increments of usually 1/64 of an inch. I have six different sizes, but seldom use more than three. Another step up is the ‘molded’ insert. A cast of the players thumb is made and

an exact copy is created as an insert. These are great for the player who needs little, if any, adjustments over the course of play, as obviously, it’s a copy. For a driller and a player, the greatest challenge is getting a useable fit for the ‘toe’ thumb. If the knuckle is wider than the base, the hole has to at least that large to insert, but now, the base is wobbling at the surface of the ball. For these cases, the player is a candidate for an oval thumb drilling. It’s complicated and requires a mill that can make controlled x and y cuts to form it, but it’s worth the extra expense of time. Keep these things in mind when adjusting that thumb, your driller knows best.

Gilbert is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Amparo; devoted children, Diane Stater (Tom, deceased), Liz Isenberg (Toshi), and Peggy Berumen (Michael). He is also survived by eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He will be missed by all who knew him. She is survived by her three daughters, Marsha Joy, Marilyn Mattson and Suzanne Brillhart; three grandsons; and five greatgrandchildren. March 7, 1929 – May 12, 2019 Gilbert Thomas Dominguez, a Brentwood resident, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, May 12. He was well known for his work with many organizations in the community. Gilbert was born in Wilmington, California. He graduated from Liberty Union High School in 1948. After serving in Korea with the U.S. Army, Gil enjoyed a 32-year career with Dow Chemical. He also served as a Brentwood Police Reserve Officer for 10 years. Throughout his adult life, he was involved in the Brentwood Men’s Club, American Legion, Door of Faith Orphanage, Parks and Recreation, St. Vincent de Paul and the IHM Rice and Beans Program. He was honored as Citizen of the Year in 2000. He was also honored with a Golden Key Pass to all LUHS sporting events for his volunteer work at Liberty. A baseball field is dedicated in his name at Sunset Park, where he was quoted as saying, “The satisfaction you receive in helping kids and others is priceless. The thanks you receive from kids when they grow up – even better.”
Sept. 23, 1917 – May 8, 2019 Geraldine “Jerri” Brillhart, age 101, passed away peacefully on May 8, at her home in Brentwood. She was born in Chicago to Rose and James Patterson. In 1935, after attending business school, Jerri moved to Los Angeles and worked as executive secretary for Aviation Insurance until her marriage to William Mattson, an Accountant, in 1940. They had two daughters, Marsha, born in 1941, and Marilyn, born in 1944. After William died of polio in 1945, Jerri remarried in 1948 to George Brillhart, a salesman. Their daughter Suzanne was born in 1949. Jerri was claims department supervisor at Travelers Insurance, Long Beach, for 22 years. After retirement at 62, she began writing poetry and prose. As a published author and award-winning poet, her poetry is included in eight anthologies. Her books include, “My 100 Years In The Rhythm and Flow” and “Antique Dreams.” Her worldwide travels included China, Turkey, Spain, France, England, Canada, Tahiti, Bora Bora, Hawaii and Mexico. As a leader in her community, she served as PTA president, youth leader and prayer practitioner at Religious Science Church in Long Beach, and prayer chaplain and poet laureate at Brentwood Unity. Jerri was an original founder of Continuing Learning Education for seniors at Fullerton State University. Her

bring in a great crop. I think what we’re talking about now is a percentage of the crop, but it’s not a disaster, by any stretch. There’s plenty to pick. There’s low-hanging fruit. There’s tons of positives.” Glenn Stonebarger, business partner at G&S Farms in Brentwood, farms about 160 acres of cherries, of which 60 acres are set aside for U-pick. He has a similar perspective on the early season. “We had good, cold weather during the winter and we attribute that, partly, to setting a good crop in Brentwood,” said Stonebarger. “Actually, we did set a really nice crop and our expectations are high and they’ve been good. The rain affecting them, it depends on the variety. This past rain on the corals that were in a certain stage, it did do damage. We’re thinking there’s only five to 10 percent that were affected. That’s a good thing.” Different varieties of cherries ripen at different times and the early-season cherries have been most susceptible to the effects of the rain, while, according to Stonebarger, ripe cherries are less likely to be damaged.

ing to pay a lot of dividends in the long run,” he said. “It’s not too sexy, because you don’t see something like a Facebook sign going up. But that process led to those down-the-road things. The process was so streamlined that I could tell Facebook their project was approved at a table — I didn’t have to do anything. I could tell them that what they wanted to do was consistent with our regulations, and they could go.” Grindall is now faced with a new challenge in Brentwood, though he’s quickly embracing it while learning on the go. Through all his plans to speed up development processes, where possible, and morph into a business-recruiting pest — a quality that helped him persuade Bass Pro Shops to come to Manteca in the early 2000s, during his stint as the city’s manager of economic development and redevelopment — he hopes to showcase Brentwood’s potential. Currently, the vast landscapes, beautiful homes, quality shopping centers, wellplanned and maintained streets and infrastructure are largely a secret to the outside, he said. “It’s a machine that is running on all cylinders, but people don’t know about it,” he said. He’s also honed in on the approved development plan for a 431-acre property south of

“We started getting rain right at that peak growing time, when they start to size,” explained Larry Enos, owner of 5 Star Cherries. “That water just starts to crack it. There’s not a lot of skin there, so it stretches and it splits. It’s a bad timing thing.” Larry Enos has grown cherries since 2002 and currently has 160 acres in production in the area, and another 195 acres that are still maturing. He said it takes five years on average for a cherry tree to produce its first viable fruit. About 50 acres of his cherries are set aside for U-pick, while the remaining 100 acres is grown for commercial sale. “The U-pickers really don’t take that much,” said Larry Enos. “But we like to keep the community involved and let them come out and get some fresh produce. That’s why we work mainly commercial.” Farmers are employing multiple strategies to keep damage to a minimum. One approach has been to start the commercial harvest earlier than planned. While doing so does get the fruit off the trees, the cherries don’t have the time to reach their full growth potential, and that can have a significant impact on
the prices paid by commercial buyers. “On the U-pick side it doesn’t change at all,” said Stonebarger. “On the commercial side, it changes, and we pick a little bit on the early side with these rains coming. Like everybody in the area for the last few days — prior to the first rain and now, just prior to the second rain — everybody is picking and we’re going a little bit deeper. So, you would be picking a little bit greener fruit to be shipped. The sugar in the fruit is not quite as high, but everybody is trying to beat the rain and ship it.” Larry Enos has been using sprayers typically used to apply pesticides and fungicides to blow air over rain-soaked cherries. And a number of farmers have hired a helicopter pilot to fly low and slow over the orchards. “We fly about a foot above the trees at about eight to 10 miles per hour,” said Andy Stein, helicopter pilot for the Brentwoodbased company, Aerial Control. “Sometimes the grower wants us to go slower. I usually go every third row. It takes about an hour to do a 40- or 50-acre field.” Even with a cost that can exceed $1,000
an hour, Stein has been kept busy flying. “This year we’ve done a lot (of crop drying) because they said it was the biggest and best crop in a long time,” said Stein. “The early cherries were huge. They’re trying to save their crops, but we can’t get to everybody.” Speaking as rain began falling — fizzling what should have been a busy Saturday — Bloomfield Cherries owner Tom Bloomfield lamented losing to rain a prime U-pick weekend. “The crop is holding up,” said Bloomfield. “It’s a very nice crop. The quality to this date looks very good. It’s just that we’re losing weekends. We have a limited amount of weekends. Cherries don’t like rain. They don’t like heat. As we get into the longer days into June, the crowds tend to diminish and you expose yourself to heat. Normally we have five to six weekends. Lone Tree Way, west of Shady Willow Lane, north of Sand Creek and east of Heidorn Ranch Road — expected to one day feature four million square feet of commercial development, generating approximately 8,400 jobs. The area would also include 2,100 housing units and a residential population of 4,500. Key plan details still need to be decided, including street locations, building height and sewer and water line sizes, he said. He hopes to utilize the nonprofit Urban Land Institute, which will use nationwide experts to analyze the plan and ensure that it’s acceptable. “If you get a given piece of land, maybe what you want is one big office building,” he said. “Maybe what you want is to carve it up with streets through it and so you create more of a downtown feel. Maybe you have an office building, a hotel, another office building. What does the market say? What will make for the best, most marketable product? Questions like that have to be addressed.” On the retail and hospitality front, Grindall believes the city needs additional auto dealers, hotels and retail stores people enjoy, such as Target, which could increase the city’s per-capita sales tax. The city’s 2018/2019 and 2019/2020 operating budgets show that Brentwood’s percapita sales tax revenue has increased an average of 5.1 percent yearly, from the 2014/2015
fiscal year to 2018/2019’s budget of $8.3 million. But an accompanying comparative city list shows the city ranking 14th out of 21, with per-capita revenue of $143.68. “I am going to be spending a lot of attention on that because I think it’s important for the revenue base for the city,” he said. “This is not a city that is struggling for revenue, but I still think it’s worth some of my attention to see if I can boost that revenue.”
As Grindall plots the city’s future, he’s also establishing his own, exploring a move to Brentwood from Newark with his wife and six-year-old daughter, after she finishes the school year. Beyond that, he wouldn’t mind one day carrying the city’s keys, full-time. “I look forward to studying under Gus Vina to see what it takes to be a great city manager,” he said.

When it’s time to say goodbye to your pets AMY SCHRADER
I
t’s never easy to let our beloved pets go, and one of the most difficult decisions pet owners face
is when is the appropriate time to put an aging or ailing pet down. “When the quality of your pet’s life appears to be deteriorating, it’s time,” said Dr. Bob Linett, licensed veterinarian and Peaceful Pet Passing owner. After practicing veterinary medicine for 45 years, including building 16 low-cost veterinary clinics and hospitals for pet parents, Linett thought he was ready for retirement. The licensed veterinarian and his wife Anna, who is a nurse, moved into Trilogy at the Vineyards in Brentwood and instead of slowing down, his passion for helping animals was ignited. “I just couldn’t get over my insatiable desire to help animals in need,” said Linett. He began working a few days a month at a non-profit spay and neuter clinic and realized he could be doing more. “During the past two years I came across several people, mostly seniors, who expressed their concern that there was not a local veterinarian that would come to their home when the time came for their pets to
pass,” said Linett. “This, along with my desire to help pets pass peacefully, was my primary reason for starting Peaceful Pet Passing.” Peaceful Pet Passing provides in-home pet euthanasia for aging pets or those with debilitating illnesses, in the comfort of people’s homes, creating an experience that is not only easier for pets, but also for their owners. “The atmosphere is always very peaceful and calm in the privacy of their own homes, resulting in pets being very peaceful and calm as well,” said Linett. “Usually the aged or ill pet will be in their pet bed or on the couch when I arrive, and that is where they tend to remain throughout the visit.” This also allows pet parents to have family and friends that their pets know and love with them as well. “The added support is very comforting for the pet parents,” said Linett. According to Linett, some symptoms that can help pet parents make this decision include if your pet is less responsive to things they normally enjoy doing; they cannot get up without help or have difficulty rising; express discomfort when moving or laying down; are exhibiting respiratory distress such as coughing, wheezing or heavy breathing and exhibit urinary or fecal incontinence. Some pets also act confused, disoriented and begin pacing or seizing. Others have changes in their eating patterns. “Ailing pets do not need to exhibit every

There may be varying degrees of the symptoms, and it is up to each pet parent to determine how much of their pet’s quality of life is being affected, as well as how much of their own quality of life is being affected to care for their aging or ill pet. The process itself is simple and painless for pets. After Linett arrives at a home, he greets the pet and performs a physical exam. If the family makes the final decision to euthanize, they complete paperwork and spend some time saying their goodbyes. A sedative is administered before an injection of a concentrated barbiturate solution that, within seconds, allows pets to
pass very peacefully. Afterwards, pet parents can opt to have Linett remove their pet and help them with arrangements for cremation, or the pet can remain with their family, who will make their own arrangements for burial or cremation. From start to finish, the entire process is designed to make the grief over losing your pet easier. Brentwood resident Donna Trenkwalder recently had her golden retriever Russell euthanized in her family home. Russell, who was adopted from a rescue facility when he was five-years-old, loved chasing squirrels, playing ball, going on walks and getting belly rubs on a daily basis, until his legs unexpectedly started getting weaker by the day. When he started refusing food and needed help to use the restroom, the Trenkwalders knew it was time to say goodbye to their beloved pet. They turned to Peaceful Pet Passing. “It truly made all the difference knowing Russell was comfortable at home as opposed to a 40-minute drive to our regular vet,” said Trenkwalder. “I am a firm believer that what Bob and Anna did for us will always remind us of how peaceful our last day was with Russ. Told about the event while visiting his vacation home in Mi-Wuk, he said it hosted every mutt known to man, and he thought it would be a good idea to bring to his hometown. “At first, I thought we might bring a few dogs in, but it turned out to be very popular,” Taylor added. “I was impressed with the attendance and all the vendors.” The mayor brought a stuffed dog, Rufus, to the festivities this year and was impressed by the city’s police canine officers. “Wow, they put on quite a show,” he said. Microchip event in June Contra Costa Animal Services (CCAS) and County Supervisor Diane Burgis are hosting a reduced cost microchip clinic on June 1, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Burgis’ office, 3361 Walnut Blvd., in Brentwood. Simple ways to prevent pet-related lawn damage

ogs and cats love spending time outdoors, and pet
owners with yards know pet time outside can take its toll on lawns. Pet urine and feces can adversely affect the look and health of a lush green lawn. Nitrogen is essential to healthy soil, but only at certain levels. When those levels are exceeded, the result can be lawn damage. According to The Spruce Pets, an advisory site that offers practical tips and training advice to pet owners, this is what happens when pets frequently urinate on grass. Urine is naturally high in nitrogen, so when pets urinate on lawns, the grass might turn yellow or brown due to the excess nitrogen content. Nitrogen also is present in
lawn fertilizers, further exacerbating the problem for pet owners who fertilize their lawns. In addition to urine damage, animals can trample frosted grass, contributing to problems that may not become evident until spring, and get into areas like gardens where they wreak additional havoc. Pet owners who want to let their animals have free access to the yard but don’t want damaged grass, can use some simple strategies to save the lawn.
Speak with a landscaper about planting new grass. Certain types of grass, such as Bermuda grass, can withstand pet damage better than others. Local climate will dictate which types of grass are likely to thrive in a given area, so speak with a professional landscaper about the viability of planting new grass.
