BRENT NICHOLS PORTFOLIO 2017

INTRODUCTION ARCHITECTURE IS A CULTURAL ENDEAVOR. IT IS A RICH COMBINATION OF HISTORY, ECONOMICS, SOCIOLOGY, BUSINESS, ART, PSYCHOLOGY, AND SEVERAL OTHER DISCIPLINES. WHILE ENGAGING IN THE PAST, ARCHITECTURE SIMULTANEOUSLY REMAINS CONNECTED WITH THE CURRENT FINANCIAL SITUATIONS, SOCIETAL ORDERS, AND AESTHETIC MOVEMENTS. IN THIS WAY THE CARTOGRAPHY OF CULTURE CAN BE READ THROUGH THE REPRESENTATIONS OF THE BUILT WORLD. AS NEW TECHNOLOGIES ARE INTRODUCED AND SOCIETY PROGRESSES AS A WHOLE, ATTEMPTS TO REPRESENT CULTURE BECOME INCREASINGLY MORE COMPLEX. THEREFORE, THE TRANSDISCIPLINARY NATURE OF ARCHITECTURE LOOKS TOWARD COLLABORATION IN ORDER TO DEVELOP HOLISTIC UNDERSTANDINGS AND ACCURATE MANIFESTATIONS. THIS COMPILATION EXHIBITS MY EXPERIMENTATION AND SPECULATION TOWARDS THE ABILITY OF ARCHITECTURE TO ORGANIZE DIVERSE APPROACHES, DESIGN SPATIAL SOLUTIONS, AND REPRESENT CULTURE.

FINDLAY MARKET MetroLAB UNIVERSITY OF CINCINNATI STEPHEN SLAUGHTER // 16 WEEKS DESIGN|BUILD GROUP STUDIO FINDLAY MARKET IS THE ONLY SURVIVING MUNICIPAL MARKET HOUSE (built in 1852) OF THE NINE PUBLIC MARKETS OPERATING IN CINCINNATI IN THE 19th AND EARLY 20th CENTURY.WE CONSULTED WITH THE MARKET AND WERE ASKED TO TRANSFORM A PUBLIC OUTDOOR DINING AREA ON RACE STREET INTO A PEDESTRIAN FRIENDLY EXPERIENCE. AFTER DISCUSSIONS WITH MARKETGOERS AND VENDORS THERE WAS AN OVERARCHING DESIRE FOR A UNIQUE & RECYCLABLE MARKET BAG. FINDLAY MARKET ONCE HAD BAG VENDORS IN THE EARLY 1960s. BY DESIGNING MOBILE BAG KIOSKS THAT WOULD DOCK AT AND ORBIT THE MARKET, WE WERE ABLE TO TO ENGAGE BOTH THE VENDORS AND MARKET GOERS THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE MARKET ALL WHILE TRANSFORMING THE ONCE STATIC DINING AREA INTO A DYNAMIC VENDING AND ADVERTISING POINT FOR THE MARKET. WITH THE REVIVAL OF THE BAG PROGRAM, INNER CITY YOUTH WERE ONCE AGAIN PLACED IN CHARGE OF THE KIOSKS ELEVATING THEM TO THE SAME SOCIAL STRATA AS THE MARKET GOER /VENDOR TEACHING THEM VALUABLE PERSONAL AND ECONOMIC SKILLS IN AN EFFORT TO RAISE MONEY FOR INNER CITY ORGANIZATIONS SUCH AS YOUTHHOPE CINCINNATI.

REMUMENT KNOWLTON SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE SANDHYA KOCHAR & LISA TILDER|| 16 WEEKS DESIGN|BUILD RESEARCH GROUP STUDIO REMUMENT WAS THE FINAL STAGE OF AN EXPLORATION INTO THE IDEAS OF MONUMENT AND ICON. DOES A MONUMENT HAVE TO BE ENORMOUS IN SCALE? CAN SOMEONE POSSESS A PERSONAL ICON THAT ACTS AS A GLOBABL MONUMENT. THESE WERE SOME OF THE QUESTIONS WE DEALT WITH THROUGH OUR EXPLORATIONS. INTIALLY WE INVESTIGATED WITH ABSTRACTIONS OF MODERN DAY ICONS INTO FAMILAR ARCHITECTURAL FORMS FORMING A FIELD OF ICONS ARRANGED AROUND THE COMPOSITION OF TWO EXAMPLES OF ARCHITECTURE ACTING AS MONUMENT. WE LATER SETTLED ON AN ANTHROPOMORPHIC FIGURE COMPRISED OF FAMOUS WORKS OF ARCHITECTURE. THIS WOULD BE A FINAL POSITE OF THE MODERN DAY ARCHITECTURE MONUMENT, THIS IS A MONUMENT TO REM KOOLHAAS, ONE OF THE FOREMOST ACHITECTS IN THE LAST 50 YEARS. THE FORM IS COMPRISED OUT OF THE FUSION OF SEVERAL OF HIS WORKS INCLUDING CCTV, SHENZHEN STOCK EXCHANGE, SEATTLE PUBLIC LIBRARY, AND AGADIR CONVENTION CENTER.

cincinnati museum center GBBN Architects Intern Architect // 16 WEEKS Historic Restoration & Renovation THE CINCINNATI MUSEUM CENTER AT UNION TERMINAL IS A PASSENGER RAILROAD STATION IN THE QUEENSGATE NEIGHBORHOOD OF CINCINNATI, OHIO. AFTER THE DECLINE OF RAILROAD TRAVEL, MOST OF THE BUILDING WAS CONVERTED TO OTHER USES, AND NOW HOUSES THREE MUSEUMS, THEATERS, A LIBRARY, AS WELL AS SPECIAL TRAVELLING EXHIBITIONS. IT HAS BEEN THREE DECADES SINCE THE MUSEUM CENTER UNDERWENT ANY TYPE OF RENOVATION. MANY OF THE EXHIBITION AS WELL AS AUXILIARY SPACES WERE BADLY IN NEED OF RESTORATION. DURING MY INTERNSHIP AT GBBN THE MAJORITY OF MY WORK WAS FOCUSED ON THE RECONFIGURATION AND REACTIVATION OF THE LOWER LEVEL LOBBY. OVER THE YEARS THE LOWER LEVEL LOBBY HAD BECOME A LONG, NARROW, STAGNANT CORRIDOR THAT WAS SELDOM USED DUE TO ITS CONFIGURATION.I WAS ALSO RESPONSIBLE FOR CREATING AND MODELING THE DESIGN FOR A TEMPORARY LOBBY AT THE MAIN ENTRANCE TO THE BUILDING. THE CLIENT WAS ADAMANT ABOUT STAYING OPEN THROUGHOUT THE DURATION OF THE RENOVATION. THIS MEANT THERE NEEDED TO BE A TEMPORARY ENTRANCE UPON ARRIVAL TO SHIELD VISTORS FROM THE CRONSTRUCTION DEBRIS AND NOISE. THE RENOVATION AND RESTORATION IS SLATED TO BEGIN LATE 2016 AND TAKE TWO AND A HALF YEARS TO COMPLETE.

city side residences McPherson Architecture Intern Architect // 16 WEEKS Multi-Family Residential THE CITY SIDE RESIDENCES WAS A MULTI FAMILY DEVELOPMENT BEING BUILT ON THE SITE OF TWO PREVIOUSLY DERELICT BUNGALOWS JUST NORTH OF DOWNTOWN DENVER. THE PRJECT IS MEANT TO HOUSE FOUR FAMILIES OF VARYING SIZES (ON A SITE THAT PREVIOUSLY ONLY SUPPORTED TWO FAMILIES) ALL WHILE NOT COMPROMISING ON SPACE THROUGHOUT THE INDIVIDUAL UNITS. THE EXTERIOR OF THE BUILDINGS EXHIBIT A CONTMPORARY ORTHAGONAL DESIGN BOTH IN FORM AND MATERIALS, WHILE THE INTERIORS ARE MEANT TO BE OPEN, BRIGHT, & MODERN, IN ORDER TO SUPPORT A GROWING FMAILY OF TODAY. DURING MY TIME AT MCPHERSON ARCHITECTURE I WORKED ON A MANY NUMBER OF PROJECTS THROUGHOUT THE 16 WEEKS I SPENT IN DENVER. THE MAJORITY OF THE WORK I WAS TASKED WITH WAS CREATING OR EDITING CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTS FOR EXISTING PROJECTS (UNFORTUNATELY I WASN’T ALLOWED TO USE/EXHIBIT ANY OF THAT WORK OUTSIDE THE OFFICE). THIS WAS ONE OF THE FEW INSTANCES IN WHICH I WAS TASKED WITH CREATING INTERIOR RENDERS FOR THE PROJECT TO BE PRESENTED TO THE CLIENT FOR APPROVAL. THE RENDERS WERE MEANT TO PORTRAY A REALISTIC VIEW OF THE HOMES WHILE HIGHLIGHTING THE MODERN MATERIALS & FIXTURES THAT WERE SPECKED FOR THE CLIENT.

ELEVATED PROMENADE KNOWLTON SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE ASHLEY SCHAEFER || 10 WEEKS CINCINNATI, OHIO

THE CITY IS VERTICAL. THE LANDSCAPE IS HORIZONTAL. THE BUILDING EXISTS ON THE DIAGONAL, BRIDGING THE TWO, REPRESENTING THE POSSIBILITY OF ARCHITECTURE ON THE DIAGONAL, AND THE EXPLORATION OF THE CONNECTION BETWEEN CITY AND NATURE. THE PUBLIC SPACE, RATHER THAN EXISTING ONLY AT THE STREET LEVEL, IS PLACED INTO THE MIDDLE OF THE PROJECT, REPOSITIONING THE OFFICES AND STRETCHING OUT THE PUBLIC PROMENADE. THE WHITE BOXES OR OFFICES START OUT AT SHARPER ANGLES NEAR THE BOTTOM AND BECOME MORE HORIZONTAL AS THEY APPROACH THE ROOF GARDEN. AT THIS MOMENT, THE RESEARCH OFFICES AND ROOF GARDEN ARE SEVERED BY THE LIBRARY HOVERING ABOVE THE REST OF THE BUILDING, ELEVATING THE IMPORTANCE OF BOTH TO THE SIERRA CLUB.
