PRECEDENT Seven17 Bourke Docklands, Victoria Metier3 2010

THE BRIEF The brief quickly presented some interesting issues. The first and biggest was how to fit 750m2 on top of 600m2. I began organising different shapes and ideas to create cantilevers and extrusions, but it wasnt untill I visited the city on an excursion and saw the recently finished Channel 9 building (Seven 17 Bourke by Metier 3 architects). I noticed the staggared and stacked look. I realised that I could a technique like this to create a decieving cantilever that actually belongs to the structure.

WATER COLLECTION

SOLAR COLLECTION

Design a live-work environment in a hot-dry climate (desert, Central Australia). The design should extend your knowledge of minimum space to design a shared live/ work dwelling that uses space efficiently to accommodate your design team plus shortterm guests (2 per design team members - 6 team members + 12 guests = 18 total residents. Domus must embrace principles of universal design. Your project must address the local climate with an emphasis on passive low-energy solar architecture. You are required to develop a prototype for your climate zone that must show how the external physical environment can be addressed through architecture. Each house must be fully autonomous because there will be no grid power or water. The project should be approached through an under- standing of the relationships between individual (private) and collective (shared) spaces within a living environment; and an understanding of how notions of ordering, organisational principles, repetition and composition can shape architectural formmaking.

PROJECT 1 Drawing a conceptual map of the tour by Dean Stewart about the history of the Yarra River. My initial concept was derived around an infograph – a map made up of words and symbols placed in a specific manner to create an image with more connotations woven through.

PROJECT 2 The next project for the semester was located at the old Alphington Swimming Pool. The task was to design an ‘experiential landscape’ at the site of the former popular pools located along the Yarra River. Students were required to engage with the visitors and with the edge of the river. Evoke something about the past, while offering something new and to also reveal something specific about the ecology of the river.

PROJECT 3 Designing a bridge across the Yarra River to Herring Island

PROJECT 5 The sixth and final project plans to re-establish the historical and once popular hub of recreational, social and competitive swimming in the Yarra River. The proposed scheme will address water pollution while reinvigorating the banks of the river. The aim is to develop a design that changes over time, not just for the present but also for the future. The design embraces time and journey through history to create an urban park and stormwater bio-filtration system between a public boathouse and a public bathhouse. The two buildings are situated at each end of a one-kilometer swimming pool that employs the filtered stormwater.

This was a project that I had no involvement designing the house and I was introduced into the project by some sketch plans on butter paper in early January of 2016. From these sketches I produce various options for the client to ponder over and discuss with my boss, as I quickly developed the Revit models further to provide the client with 3D perspectile drawings to assist the clients in understanding the scale and language of the project. Once the client was happy with the design, we pushed forward with town planning drawings. 6 weeks later I received a ‘Request for Further Information’ from council, and then a further 8 weeks on we received a conditional planning permit. I am currently transposing the drawings into working drawings, as we will be applying for a building permit soon.
