Having spent 15 years working as a professional photographer in the south east, Ron Bushell Photography has relocated to the good old West Country to offer couples his high quality service against our formidable Cornish backdrops. Ron’s quite unique approach to wedding photography entails the presence of two photographers at your wedding: Ron himself capturing the more traditional shots with his well-honed natural and relaxed touch, while a second photographer captures the ‘behind the scenes’ reportage style images, providing the complete story of your day. If you don’t want a conventional album, opt for a stunningly presented ‘art book’ where the two styles of photography can be presented in an individually designed bound book using a montage effect. Ron is happy to visit you at home, both to show examples of his work and discuss the range of packages available.

FEATURE: DRESSES NOW AND THEN
Back To The FUTURE words Hannah May
Fuse the cream of past and present for a look which oozes individuality. Let this story of three dresses be your inspiration. Vintage is not as easy as it may sound. It is a single word that encapsulates a number of times and styles, which can be mixed, adapted and altered to suit specific tastes. Within a single decade, there may be a plethora of looks to inspire and borrow from, whether you choose to wear your grandmother’s gown or simply wish to recreate your aunt’s hairstyle. To help you get started, we’ve asked three Cornish ladies, married across half a century, to share their stories and wisdom on the ultimate of wedding banes and triumphs: the dress.

attention. Binding your treasured
ring may be, but the only bling factor? Certainly not.
Vintage is a look that stems from the head and trails to the tail - which means dressing your locks with the utmost savvy. Personal style is easy as it’s not about copying catwalk trends so much as individualising them. Borrow the latest ideas to carve your own look and you’ll net the eye of all who swoon in your dazzling wake.
Detail is definitely a large dress code factor, but it’s a less fuss, more style statement business to attend to. The current scene is preoccupied with texture and colour – sweeping, bold and luscious – with feathers, diamonds, crystals and anything else that crowns your beauty and announces your bridal best.

GROOM: CLASSIC CORNISH
Cornish cuffs Wear your roots – and pastry dish of choice – on your sleeve with these cufflinks from South Crofty. Handcrafted from Cornish tin, choose from a range of designs including the Cornish Arms, St Piran’s flag and this delicious pasty pair. 01872 560200 www.croftytin.co.uk
Super scent Ok, so it’s not strictly Cornish, but the founder of Penhaligon’s was. Hailing from our very own Penzance, William Henry Penhaligon’s fragrances have been worn by society’s upper crust since its establishment in 1870, and include Winston Churchill and Jude Law amongst its fans. New fragrance Opus 1870 fuses spiced black pepper, English clove rose amid warm woods and musk for a timeless yet titillating scent, the perfect potion to waft on your wedding day.
www.penhaligons.co.uk Proper present Give your best man and ushers a proper Cornish gift that is sure to raise a smile. Bearing a range of Cornish dialect with dictionary style definitions such as ‘Proper job’, ‘Dreckly’ and the ever so cheeky ‘Rightonmacock’, these boxers from Spin a Yarn are a great quality, fun present, that will make your pals think fondly of your wedding every time they, err, pull up their smalls. You could even give your new wife a laugh on the wedding night…for all the right reasons.
01736 368899 www.spin-a-yarn.co.uk Tasty tartan Give your good lady a run for her money in the style stakes – opt for a dazzling dose of Cornish tartan. The choice is vast and colourful: whether you want to go the whole hog in full kilted splendour or the more subtle touch of a tartan tie or waistcoat, radiance is guaranteed. For those of you who don’t know your Cornish tartan from your Cornish taties, here’s a quick rundown…
Cornish National Tartan: An unmistakably Cornish statement, the striking National Tartan combines white on black to signify St Piran’s flag, black and gold for the colours of the ancient Cornish kings, red for the beak and legs of the chough and pale blue for the sea surrounding the county.
Cornish Hunting Tartan: The less dramatic cousin of the National Tartan, the Hunting Tartan incorporates the National’s colours against a dark green background, with the light blue replaced with a royal blue – together with gold these were the hues of the Cornish wrestlers. Now you know.
But the kilt is only the beginning. Sporrans, Celtic kilt pins and even garters are
The Groo amongst the other regalia which will finish your vision of tartan brilliance. Get your legs out and epitomise a classic, cool and oh so Cornish style.

Prepare to replicate Jenga with full on topply towers of palatable indulgence. It’s an all-out cake flaunt where every aspect is edible, every detail delectable, and every guest will be wiping their mouth with cream-filled appreciation.
With taste and texture back on the hit list, it’s not so much about shape (even though the move from traditional round to current trendy square/hexagonal is still hot on the scene), but feeling. Oh yes, it’s amazing what a cake can do.
Autumn is unashamed. With stacked cakes, multiple tiers and a multitude of flavours, ingredients and decorations, it’s a veritable taste sensation.
The market is seeing genoise (light sponge cake) as a base for three or more different layers so that guests can choose their favourite flavour (or, if you’re like me, are given the opportunity to devour all available options…).
Whimsy is still popular but with greater regard to a real decorative edge – the matching of thematic details, which especially with vintage style includes embellishments such as flowers, ribbons and jewellery. Effectively and beautifully achieved by edible paint or pulled sugar, gumpaste and scrollwork, the finish is a modern take on a vintage age that is also totally digestible. Bonus.
Consider mocking up or drawing jewellery or dress details atop your cake for a unique congruence of style. Crown your cake in the same way that the bride would wear jewels to exemplify specific, memorable features.
Deep, lush colours with tantalising toppers – figurines or other decorations – are in design demand. That way, image is fused with flavour, incorporating individual style with snippets of a bygone era in order to merge the past with the present in a wholly stylistic and personal way. Everything beckons a rather grandiose yet tasteful affair.
Don’t fear decadence. Dive in and feed your ultimate cravings. It’s where the wedding night truly begins…

There is a certain mystique about tying
the knot in a building with a story. And it’s not just about having a complementary backdrop for your vintage inspired dress. It’s in the touch of grandeur an old property exudes, the timelessness of the setting, and, of course, the unmistakable sense of romance.
Cornwall isn’t just about rugged cliffs and seascapes; the county boasts some spectacular historical buildings that cannot fail to infuse your day with atmosphere, romance and all the components necessary for an elegant shindig. We’ve nosed around some of the best examples for you.

For utter romance…
For anyone who gushes at the romance of the Austen era – at love played out against the setting of grand country retreats, at horses grazing in the grounds, at the panelled walls, huge draped windows and portraits of a bygone era – there can be few more elegant nor romantic settings for you to marry your Mr Darcy than Scorrier House. Set amidst 450 acres of woods and parkland, Scorrier House marries splendour with a laidback atmosphere. Like Trereife, Scorrier House benefits from the personal character of being a family home, the Williams family who live there being direct descendants of the John Williams who made his fortune from mining and built the property back in 1778.

The Private Party
The happy couple Laura and Christian Browne from London Laura and Christian wanted an intimate celebration, their only guests being the great outdoors: the spectacular landscape of the south Cornish coastline, the sea and the sunshine. With the sun dancing on the water as a backdrop, their humanist ceremony took place in the grounds of The Driftwood Hotel. It was a relaxed and personal occasion, the barefoot bride clutching daisies to accompany her designer frock, with photographer Dave Mann as their witness. The ceremony was followed by a smoked salmon picnic on the beach washed down with lots of Champagne.
Laura and Christian are holding a big party in London for approximately 200 family and friends to toast their union, and are particularly looking forward to diving – perhaps literally – into the chocolate fountain they have opted for instead of a cake.
The newly weds claim they wouldn’t change one thing about their wedding day. And their top tip? “Don’t think about anyone else on your wedding day but each other. It is your day and belongs to only you.”

The Surprise Wedding
The happy couple Layla and Roger Strover from Tiverton, Devon
This was the ultimate surprise celebration. Both Roger and Layla’s families had arranged a holiday in rented cottages in the picturesque village of St Anthony-in-Meneage on the Helford Creek. On the eve of the wedding, the pair announced that they had a special announcement. Their families assumed they were getting engaged – no one had guessed they were going a step further and tying the knot!
Unsurprisingly, no one had packed their best wedding togs, so the wedding day was very much an impromptu, laidback affair with guests donning their shorts and T-shirts for the celebrations.
Forget haute cuisine and silver service. The wedding breakfast comprised pasties from The Horse and Jockey Bakery in Helston, served by the newly weds in paper bags. A novel and savoury alternative to cake, a specially made giant pasty was washed down with lots of Champagne, while an ice-lolly from the shop on the harbour ensured sweet tooths were satisfied.
Layla comments, “It was a real mission to get everything organised in secret but the day was fantastic: no pressure and lots of fun.”

The Beach Bash The happy couple Emma and Jon Timms from Newquay
Emma and Jon married on a beautiful summer’s day. After a church ceremony, the extreme sports enthusiasts enjoyed a laidback celebration with a real beach vibe. Overlooking the sands of Lusty Glaze, guests tucked into a sumptuous fish and Thai barbecue supplied by Lusty Glaze Restaurant.
Evening gave way to dance floor antics, with The Mahoon Brothers supplying the perfect soundtrack to fit the chilled out mood of the day, the first dance being ‘Something In The Way She Moves’ by The Beatles. As the atmosphere reached its peak, dedicated photographer Andrew Hawker was hanging off the rafters for photo opportunities.
It was no cheap and cheerful weekend in Devon for Emma and Jon’s honeymoon; the pair travelled around the world for a year with destinations including Thailand, Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand and Fiji.
Would the newly weds change anything about their day? “Not a thing,” comments Jon, “it was all perfect.” And their top tip? “Do it your way. Everyone always has their own ideas – try not to get swayed by other people.”
