Here comes Bride! Penzance will not be without a bridal shop for much longer. Bride! will be

opening in mid-July, bringing a chic selection of gowns, shoes, locally crafted bridal accessories and expert hair and beauty advice to the westerly town. Linda Foster, owner and long-established local make-up artist and hairdresser, is looking forward to opening the contemporary and spacious new store at 45 Market Jew Street. She will be showcasing a stunning range of designs exclusive to Bride! from Charlotte Balbier and Simply Stunning as well as featuring the exquisite jewellery and tiaras of Sarah Drew. And there’s more. Linda will be offering a free makeup and hair consultation with every purchase for the rest of 2007. What further reason do you need to head west and sample the relaxed and stylish vibe of Bride!?

Enter the Diary Room… Like it or loathe it, Big Brother is back. And now a Cornish company is offering wedding guests a chance to step into the famed ‘Diary Room’. As an optional extra to their wedding DVD packages, Memories on Film invite your friends and family into a designated Diary Room area to leave their messages during the wedding. An indisputably entertaining alternative to the tradition of writing good luck notes in a book, the messages are edited as a DVD extra into the final film. Memories on Film endeavour to capture the atmosphere, the romance and the laughs of your day in a professionally filmed and stylishly edited record; one package even offers the inclusion of a series of stills of you and your beau growing up, the engagement, hen and stag shenanigans and the wedding to a soundtrack of your choice. Then you’d better get down to Oh Knickers! a fabulous new lingerie boutique in Truro. Located at 6 River Street, the spacious store stocks a wide range of underwear lines to make budding brides feel svelte, sexy and maybe even a little bit saucy. Lines include By Caprice, the Playboy White label which is exclusive to lingerie boutiques, the Special Occasions range by Panache for the voluptuous bride and Atlantis for strapless and liquid-filled bras. All beautifully crafted in silk and satin, Victoria Beckham’s underwear brand of choice, Myla, spells luxury, quality and red-hot honeymoon antics. l u if t u a e B y d d Bu It’s summer. And when it comes to wedding flowers that means one thing – we want colour. And lots of it. From golden sandy beaches, lush sub-tropical gardens and rose-tinted sunsets, Cornwall is ablaze with vibrant hues at this time of year. And, as a summer bride, you can look the belle of nature’s colour parade –

all it takes is the right flowers. words Rebecca Matthews

Before you get absorbed in the details of buttonholes and table centrepieces, consider your theme or setting so you can choose colours that contrast or complement.

Coastal If you’ve chosen a spectacular strip of Cornish coastline as the backdrop of your wedding, a palette of blues, greens and cool creams makes an effective combination, while matching the sea and sky. Consider binding your flowers with a simple blue ribbon or, if you’re going for a sea theme, use a piece of reclaimed rope and thread seashells into the bouquets. Reception arrangements can incorporate driftwood, natural sand, netting and even lobsterpots.

Country An arrangement of soft pastel shades, such as pinks, blues, lilacs and creams, look striking against a garden or country setting. Peony, phlox, astilbe, acapanthus and the radiant purple allium lend a country garden feel. Don’t be shy with your foliage – a cooling touch of green works beautifully amongst the blooms. Floral accessories, such as dragonflies and butterflies, woven amongst your bouquets add an earthy and elegant touch. Opt for arrangements in terracotta pots for your reception.

Tropical Infuse your wedding with a potent taste of the tropics. We’re talking an

bouquet. Mixed foliage and butterflies complete the fresh summer look. Designer Wedding Flowers 01872 520005

Rose Oozing romance with every softly scented petal, the rose is the ultimate wedding flower. The beautifully classic and eternally popular flower is available in virtually every colour: go for yellow or orange for a sensational summer look or the vibrant vision of love itself – red. Think beyond bouquets and buttonholes and consider wearing a rose in your hair. Symbolic meaning: love, beauty

RAINBOW BRIGHT Lily If you have visions of a dramatic bouquet with a modern

elegant twist, the lily is where it’s at. Available in a range of colours from fresh whites and creams to vibrant reds and

pinks, it only takes a few of the large funnel-shaped blooms

to make a statement. You may even choose to carry a single, long-stemmed white lily for a simple yet sophisticated look. Just make sure the stamens are removed or you could be sporting a less-than-fetching pollen stain on your ivory gown. Symbolic meaning: majesty, purity

Lavender A beautiful fragrance and a beautiful flower, lavender lends a touch of elegance from every delicate purple bloom. Lavender is particularly fitting for table centrepieces at a country wedding. Symbolic meaning: constancy

Peony Only available for a few weeks each year, the peony counts a sense of exclusivity amongst its many charms. The big and beautiful blooms come in soft peaches and pinks through to deep reds and maroons, making a simple yet stunning bridal bouquet. Symbolic meaning: bashfulness

Sunflower The symbol of summer itself, a sunflower peeping out of your bouquet is like the rising sun smiling on your nuptials. Yellow is the obvious choice, but some unusual tan, orange and rusty colours are now becoming available. Like lilies, you don’t need many to make a show-stopping impact. Symbolic meaning: pride, adoration

Magnolia Ahh, magnificent magnolia whose blooms come in a fabulous festival of shapes and colours from cool whites and creams to dazzling pinks and yellows. So it can be a pricey option, but teamed alongside other flowers, magnolia will flavour your wedding with a sense of luxury and loveliness. Images courtesy of The Flower Council of Holland

Symbolic meaning: love of nature

Sweet pea Its life span may be short, but its fragrance is oh so sweet. A bridal favourite for generations, the delicate purple, pink, cream and salmon blooms of the sweet pea make a dramatic impact en masse as a table centrepiece or a bridesmaid posy. Symbolic meaning: pleasure

Chrysanthemum Whether you opt for the small daisy-like Getting your lavender confused with your lily? Meet the stars of the summer colour parade…

bloom or its dramatic multi-petalled cousin, the chrysanthemum opens the door to a bewildering choice of bold colour choices. Go for lime green, bronze or red for eye-catching effect. Symbolic meaning: wealth, truth

WATERSIDE LOCATIONS Imagine it. The afternoon light twinkling on the water, your photographs taken before a serene backdrop of blue and aquamarine, the gentle murmur of the tide as you sip on your bubbly and nibble on your canapés. There’s no disputing it: a waterside venue makes an alluring setting for a wedding. And we’re spoilt for choice here in Cornwall.

WED is here to help make the deliciously difficult decision of choosing your waterside venue that bit easier. We’ve sampled the romantic, the luxurious and the beachside to help you find the setting with the location, facilities and atmosphere you’ve been looking for.

For the helpless romantic…

The Godolphin Arms

Locations don’t come much better than this. Overlooking St Michael’s Mount, the sweeping panorama of Mount’s Bay and the golden sands of Marazion Beach, The Godolphin Arms boasts a view of breathtaking beauty. The marriage ceremony takes place before a stunning bay window, with the 12th century castle perched atop its rocky island as a backdrop. So far, so dramatic. Yet, despite the rare sense of romance and almost tangible atmosphere of the setting, there’s not the slightest hint of the formality that sometimes goes with it. From the sunny décor to the friendly staff, The Godolphin Arms has a refreshingly relaxed and comfortable vibe.

Location, location, location… is what The Pedn Olva is all about. Nestled into the cliff side in the heart of St Ives, the view from the picture window is straight out of a John Miller painting: an expanse of sea, sky and sand crowned with the iconic Godrevy Lighthouse. All aquamarines, deep blues and zesty yellows in summer, the hotel exudes a different charm altogether in winter, the waves crashing on the rocks below and a restless seascape as a backdrop. 52 wed Summer_07

Traditional pole marquee

words Rebecca Matthews

photo Simon Green photo Phil Glew

If the word ‘marquee’ conjures up images of the glorified trailer tent at your local country fair, think again. Marquees have come a long way – so far, in fact, that enjoying your wedding celebrations under canvas now appears to be the height of photo Jenny and Phill Potter

reception chic.

The appeal of a marquee lies in the personal factor. A marquee is a blank canvas on which you can paint your vision of the ideal venue. From the shape to the colour scheme to the furniture, the look, layout and vibe of your wedding is shaped around you. Then, of course, there’s the matter of our rather spectacular county, which offers an abundance of beautiful settings to site your marquee.

First things first… Find your setting. A number of venues across

the county offer marquee weddings in their grounds, providing you with the backdrop of an historic stately home or lush sub-tropical gardens. Or perhaps you’ll want to site your wedding on private land. The ideal plot will be level and have easy access for vehicles. You may opt for a good view or a place with some sentimental attachment for you or your fiancé.

MENU 2 £40 a head, served Aside from the celebrated union of bride and groom, the dress, and arguably the booze, weddings are all about food. For many guests, the enjoyment of their entire day comes down to the flavour of the soup, the tenderness of the meat or the delectability of the sorbet. So choosing your caterer is not a decision to be taken lightly.

In today’s culinary climate, local, seasonal produce is on the minds and lips of those in the industry, and those seeking quality in the catering they choose. It is important to check the credibility of your caterers as some pay lip service to seasonal produce whilst not paying the financial or disciplinary skills local, seasonal and organic produce requires.

The warm summer months bring with them a wealth of rich produce. From June onwards there is a vast array of fruits and vegetables available. From the soft, pungent fruit of July to the promise of light, fresh summer-rich eating in August, lack of choice is a non-issue. With as much variety in the food available as there are designs of dress, there is a solution to fit any budget.

Michelin-starred chef Ben Tunnicliffe of The Abbey Restaurant, Penzance specializes in small, exclusive wedding banquets. The venue is jaw-droppingly chic, befitting the most style-conscious bride and can cater for a maximum of 30 people. However, the bride may have to concede that the food is the star of the show. Tunnicliffe has the integrity to use produce at the right time and from the right place, whilst also carrying the culinary flair and precision to prepare it in sumptuous style.

So you want to bring some bottled pleasure to your guests and keep it Cornish? WED investigates Camel Valley’s still and sparkling sensations. words Hannah May

I’m no wine expert. But like everyone else, I know what I like and am confident when something tastes, smells or feels good to me. Sitting and sipping amidst the balmy slopes of Camel Valley – proclaimed by one expert as “England’s answer to Sancerre” – it isn’t a feat to see why reviews for this place and its produce are rave, and its appeal is so easy.

A drenched wine guzzling – ahem – tasting, to bring you the hottest summer flavours for everything from engagement parties and toasts, to the day of ‘I dos’ and beyond.

Slow growing grapes and a rich climate are the keynotes of Camel Valley’s bottled produce. The result? A fusion of flavour - delicate, fresh and scented - you can practically taste the ocean and land from which it derives.
