o you remember the date of your anniversary? Do you remember the day you proposed? Maybe that’s too easy… Do you remember the day you met the love of your life? Tony Bell does. “I met Shel on Tuesday August 21, 2012 in Taps Pub.” Tony tells us. “Shel and her friend Katlin were standing at the bar and I am pretty sure that I thought to myself ‘I had better talk to those cute girls before someone else does’”. Tony moved to Golden in 2007 after falling in love with Kicking Horse, but Shelby was simply driving through town on her way to Penticton for a road trip. “Shel and I found a spark between us that found myself texting with the girl in my phone named ‘Shelby Saskatchewan’... [She’s] still in my phone as that to this day.” Maybe it was Golden, or maybe it was simply Tony, but Shel and her friend never made it to Penticton. Instead, they spent their time enjoying Golden’s shops, restaurants, a concert at the Civic Centre and, of course, time with the boy Shel met at Taps.  The two eventually headed home to Saskatchewan, but Shel didn’t stay long. She “moved to Golden 11 days after leaving.” “For the first couple of years she said that she was just looking for a change of scenery from the prairies of Saskatchewan, but now will openly say that it was for a boy.” 6

Shel and Tony soon became a well-known fixture in the community. Their relationship grew around Golden’s abundance of outdoor activities and the thriving music scene. Both joined the Nicholson Volunteer Fire Department and often volunteered at community events but were best known as the couple in front of the stage. It was only a matter of time before Tony mustered the courage to ask the big question. Tony admits that he had never thought he would get married, but Shel had him changing his mind. Although he had an alternate proposal plan, it was at the Golden Sound Festival that Tony popped the question. “I approached my friend Greg Bodnaryk and said something to the effect of ‘dude, I think I want to ask Shel to marry me during Yukon Blonde, what do you think?’” Greg asked if Tony had a ring and, when his answer was no, Tony began to think that his idea wouldn’t work. Luckily, Greg had a wise piece of advice. “Just borrow one!” Tony saw a friend of his, Marjie Beal, while she was leaving the event and he quietly asked her if he could borrow her ring. “She looked at me for a brief moment, smiled, took it off and placed it in my hand and carried on home.” Finally the moment came. Tony wanted to propose during Yukon

Blonde’s song ‘My Girl’. When the band finished the first chorus, Tony took his moment. “I grabbed Shel’s hand, slipped on Marjie’s ring and said ‘will you be my girl, will you marry me?” Shel answered with “Seriously? YES!” After telling their families and buying Shel her own engagement ring, the two began planning their Golden wedding. Tony and Shel knew that Golden had the facilities to host both a large or small wedding and, ultimately, decided that they wanted a smaller, more intimate, event. When looking at venues, the two decided that the Wolf’s Den would be perfect. “We had always enjoyed eating there and the atmosphere of the old log building was exactly what we wanted.” They set the date for May 14, 2016, at the end of the spring shoulder season. Being such a large part of the Golden community, Tony and Shel knew of the abundance of vendor options available. John Jenkins Small Town Revival was their band of choice and Married in the Mountains was in charge of the floral design. Just like that, the reception was planned. When it came to the ceremony, Tony and Shel decided the perfect venue would be the Golden Eco Adventure Ranch. “I had always loved the spot by the pond at the back of the property. [The Eco Adventure Ranch] wasn’t too far out of town that

our guests needed complicated directions to get to and we were able to rent a bus from a local rafting company to transport the wedding party back to town.” There was only one thing left to do; have their stag and stagette, both of which were also in Golden. Tony’s day comprised of mountain biking, a Columbia River float, a BBQ and a Devon Coyote show at the Rockwater Bar and Grill. Shel’s day involved a Rockstar themed party at a friend’s house before meeting the boys at the Rockwater; where Tony and Shel ended their night in front of the stage together. Finally, May 14 arrived. Under a blue sky, surrounded by their closest friends and family, Tony waited at the edge of the pond for Shel to arrive in the Nicholson Fire Department’s Engine 1. “The ceremony was short, sweet and full of man tears.” After the ceremony, the wedding party made their way to the Riverhouse for its famous Shaft drink before heading to the Wolf’s Den to celebrate Tony and Shel’s marriage. After a great meal, great music and even better company, the wedding moved their way to the Rockwater, where Tony and Shel once again finished the night in front of the stage. In the words of Tony, and all those who attended, “it really was an entirely Golden wedding”.  Fitting, for an entirely Golden relationship.

hether you’re planning a stag or stagette, wedding, recommending something for your guests to check out in Golden, or thinking about a unique party favour, make sure the newly opened Whitetooth Brewing Company is on that list. After years in the planning, the brewery officially opened its doors at the end of 2016 to a very enthusiastic beer drinking community. Whitetooth Brewing is a uniquely Golden experience. You can come in and pick up a few growlers to bring back to your chalet for your bachelor party, or you can bring the crew in to try a “flight” of samplers and test out all of their six varieties. “Initially we’re selling a lot of the tasters because everyone wants to try them all,” said co-owner Mark Nagao. This lets people find their favourite, but that might be harder than it sounds. “On any given day any one of those six could be my favourite, it’s hard to pick,” added Nagao. Each one was given a specific name to compliment the wild outdoors that inspired them. There’s the Blower Pow India Pale Ale, Whitetooth Session Blonde Ale, Speed Metal Foreign Extra Stout (which make up the three West Coast brews), Icefields Pale Ale, Launch Pad Rye Ale, and Thread the Needle Witbier (which are the three Belgian brews). “No one else, at least in the Kootenays, is doing Belgian style beers. I had a lot of people challenging me on that one, saying ‘you’re going to do Belgians? In Golden? Are you out of your mind?’ We found out early that people were enjoying those styles of beers, so we knew our hunch was correct,” said Kent Donaldson who opened the brewery with Nagao. Whitetooth offers “flights” in two sizes in their tasting rooms, which allows guest to try samples of four different beers, making it the perfect stop on a Golden pub crawl. It is located next to Glacier Rafting company along the Kicking Horse River, and walking distance from the rest of downtown Golden.

nce upon a time, bachelor and bachelorette parties were a night out in town to commemorate the end of your single life and the beginning of a new chapter. The sentiment is still the same, but these days the bridesmaids and groomsmen have gotten a little more creative. Brides and grooms-to-be often get whisked away for a weekend adventure. And in Golden, you’ll find adventure at every turn. “Golden isn’t just a beautiful backdrop for your wedding day, with all of the outdoor

activities, private accommodations, and lively nightlife, it is also the perfect place to plan your stag or stagette,” said Joanne Sweeting, manager of Tourism Golden. Whitewater rafting is one of the community’s biggest draws, and rafting companies see groups coming in all summer for bachelor or bachelorette parties. Paddling down the iconic Kicking Horse River is a rite of passage in Golden. But the party doesn’t stop there. All summer long there is hiking, biking,

golfing and more to keep you active and entertained in the day, and live music and entertainment almost every evening. Winter parties are just as epic with skiing and snowboarding, and snowmobile trips. And if you want a more intimate experience, book your party into one of Golden’s many chalets or lodges for a quiet weekend in the mountains. No matter what you choose to do, your outdoor adventure experience will bond your group, and send you home with a great story.

he bride and groom are always going to be the centre of attention during their wedding. But family and friends travelling for the nuptials might find themselves with time to kill before the actual event. Of course that won’t be a problem in Golden, and we encourage guests to take advantage of their time here. No matter what season you choose for your wedding, your guests will find plenty to do. “There are so many activities in Golden that you could do two a day for a week and still have plenty left over,” said Joanne Sweeting, general manager of Tourism Golden. “If you are an outdoorsy person then we guarantee you won’t get bored in this town.” The wedding party will be busy with rehearsal dinners, hair and make-up. But the guests can take the time to explore the community. Whether you enjoy golfing, hiking, paddling down the river, or mountain biking, Golden will keep you active in the summer. The winter is just as exciting. Wedding guests can fill their time skiing or snowboarding at our world class ski resort Kicking Horse, nordic skiing or snowshoeing at Dawn Mountain’s extensive trail network, snowmobiling in the back country, or just going for a skate on one of the community’s many outdoor rinks. Outdoor adventure not your thing? Don’t worry, Golden is full of unique dining options, shopping downtown, and there’s always live music and entertainment to be found. With your accommodation options, however, some people may choose to stay in and simply enjoy the view, 10

possibly from the hot tub. “One of the best parts about staying in Golden is the variety of accommodations. There are lodges, boutique B&B’s, luxury resort homes, remote cabins and more, each with their own unique qualities,” said Sweeting. No matter what you choose to do to fill your time, you can find help at They have lists of activities, trail maps for summer and winter activities, links to accommodations, and sample trip planners and itineraries. “If I could only give one piece of advice, it would be to show up a day or two early,” added Sweeting. “You’ll still wish you were here longer, but at least you’ll have crossed a few more things on your must do list.” PHOTO BY JEFF BARTLETT

apturing those special moments is one of the highest priorities on any bride and groom’s list. Whether it’s an engagement photo shoot, candid ceremony shots, or newly wed session, these pictures become lasting memories. These moments can be just as exciting for the photographer. “It is so much fun,” said Amy Barrett, a former outdoor adventure photographer who made weddings one of her main focuses six years ago.

In her time photographing love stories in Golden, Barrett has been fortunate enough to be part of 16

engagement sessions, weddings big and small, anniversaries, and even one very special surprise proposal. “That was really cool to see, one of my more memorable jobs for sure,” said Barrett. The bride-to-be was being taken on a helicopter ride, and given she didn’t know there was a proposal on the way, Barrett had to pretend she was just catching a ride for another job. “I think I told her I was there for a newspaper job or something,” laughed Barrett. Unlike a staged engagement shoot, Barrett had to make sure she didn’t miss that one special moment or expression. But as a seasoned wedding photographer, she’s used to that kind of pressure.

“People usually trust me to take them where I think are good locations, because I know the area so well and they’re usually out of town couples,” said Barrett. “But the mountains are always a big part of it. Couples want that sense of adventure to be part of their weddings.” Adventure is definitely what one of Barrett’s most memorable clients got. The pair had a very small and intimate wedding at Eagle’s Eye Restaurant at the top of Kicking Horse Mountain Resort, with only eight guests. After a beautiful ceremony they were heading back down to the base when there was a mechanical issue. “We had to be evacuated from the gondola,” recalled Barrett. “They were so great about it, they thought it just gave them a great story to tell. They came to Golden for adventure, and this definitely added to that for them.” “I always tell people I’m terrible with names, but don’t take it personally,” she said. “I’m just so focused on the moment and what’s happening. I don’t want to miss anything.” She has also been fortunate enough to get to know some of these couples well, and even photograph them for multiple steps on their wedding journey. Jenn and Nolan were married in Golden, and then called Barrett to tell her they were coming back. “I was so excited when they called me to say they were coming back to Golden to celebrate their first anniversary,” she recalled. “It’s just great to be there for those moments.” Barrett was excited the couple was coming back, but not necessarily surprised. Countless couples have discovered the beauty of Golden, and can’t wait to be photographed in nature and have the mountains in the background.

r u o y e k a m o t s A few tip

g n i d d e W n e d Gol a hitch

go off without

ost couples who choose Golden for their weddings do so for the breathtaking natural beauty, and the sense of adventure that goes along with it. And part of getting married in the mountains means you have to be ready for anything. So we’ve compiled a few tips and recommendations to make sure your day goes off without a hitch. Photo shoots are always an exciting part of the experience. Your photographer will already know some spectacular locations to take you, but don’t be afraid to come into it with your own vision of what you want. However, the weather in Golden can be unpredictable all year round, so make sure you have a few items before heading out for a photo shoot: - an umbrella - something warm to wrap yourself in (especially if you’re wearing a dress) - an extra pair of shoes, because your photographer may ask you to get to some tight spots to get the perfect shot Planning the actual event can be overwhelming, especially if you’re planning a mountain wedding where you and your guests have to travel. Here’s a few things to consider when you’re locking down your decisions: - Golden has many beautiful secluded locations to get married that provide accommodation. But some of your guests, maybe grandparents or parents with young children, may be more comfortable staying at another location. Go to to see the wide variety of 22

accommodations you can recommend to your guests. - The wedding industry is a tight-knit community in Golden. If you’ve already decided on one vendor, whether it be a DJ, photographer, mobile bartender, wedding planner, florist or caterer, ask for recommendations. These industry professionals have worked hundreds of weddings together, and will be able to help you find the best fit for your wedding. When it comes time for the actual day, a few little preparations can help ensure that your wedding weekend will go exactly as planned: - Give yourself plenty of time to get here. The highways can be busy and unpredictable, and you don’t want to add any stress by being late. - Make sure your guests have detailed directions to your ceremony location, perhaps even include a map. Most venues and lodges are clearly marked on the roads, but better safe than sorry. - Just as with the photo shoots, make sure you and your wedding party are prepared for any weather situation. And finally, and this is not a Golden-specific recommendation, don’t rush off the next day. Nothing is worse than scrambling to get everything tied up and ready to go by check-out time the next morning. By giving yourself one more day in Golden, you’ll end your wedding weekend feeling relaxed and ready to start your life with your new spouse.

If you can dream it, I can create it. Married in the Mountains Floral Design would be honoured to provide flowers in the finest design, and presentation possible for your special day. I look forward to exploring and expanding all the possibilities. Wishing you all the best with your wedding plans and preparations. - Blessings, April
