Welcome to the seventh edition of BredaPhoto! In this magazine, we will guide you past the 73 photo graphers and artists exhibiting at this festival. Discover their work in more than 25 exhibitions across Breda; you’ll even find photos along the canals. There are also plenty of lectures, meetings with photographers and activities for all ages. This year’s theme YOU is about self-reliance. It’s a word you might have heard of late. People should learn to take care of them selves instead of lean on the government. We are curious about the effects. Does it lead to creativity and new initiatives? Or does it lead to inequality? And how does that differ per country? Photographers from across the globe were inspired by this year’s theme. Amongst them are celebrated names like Michael Wolf, Bryan Schutmaat and Magnum-photographers Paolo Pellegrin and Carl De Keyzer. But you will also discover new talent. We’ve worked together with art academies from the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. We’re also proud to present The Absent State, a collabo ration with the renowned World Press Photo agency. We’ve invited five photographers and five writers from five continents to engage in this special project. Overwhelmed by this jam-packed program? Consider buying our catalogue, it contains photos and backgrounds of all the photographers so you can relive the festival highlights at home. We wish you a pleasant festival! The BredaPhoto team

Mohammad Abdulazez (Azouz) Saraab (Mirage) | Azouz (syr) tells the personal story of his flight from Syria to the Netherlands. He shares the horrors and the hate, his hopes and his fears.

Eva Beazar  → p48

Hideyuki Ishibashi Présage | Hideyuki Ishibashi (jpn) makes mysterious collages out of old pictures he found on flea markets or online. He cuts images into pieces, adds elements, and shows both the process and the end result. What do we see? Is it reality or fantasy?

Johan van der Keuken  → p72 We are 17 & Les copains | The book We are 17 (1955) caused quite a stir. For the first time, the lives of youngsters were documented in so much detail. They smoked pipe, drank wine, philoso phised about the future. Critics spoke of a ‘doomed generation’. Sixty years later the book is published again, next to a new book with recently discovered pictures.

10

A Constructed Family | Talented Eva

Beazar (bel) made a series of ‘hybrid portraits’ for BredaPhoto. She placed passport pictures of friends and family on top of each other. The result is a series of intense black and white portraits in which multiple persons morph into one.

Lin Zhipeng (223) Untitled | These intimate and raw snap shots depict China as we rarely see it. The searching, eccentric youngsters experiment, smoke and have sex. Lin Zhipeng (chn) is one of the pioneers of contemporary Chinese avant-garde photography.

Lucie Marsmann Ulla & Willi | Her grandparents Ulla and Willi owned a photo shop and portrait studio and were in the habit of photographing each other. When Lucie Marsmann (deu) stumbled on their immense archive, she decided to rearrange some pictures, pairing them with her own photos of memorabilia.

Anika Neuß

Zoë Parton Sofie | When Zoë Parton (bel) was nine years old, she lost her older sister Sofie in a traffic accident. To deal with her sister’s death she made a striking photo series in which Sofie is omni present, without actually being there.

Delusion. The Phenomenological Case of Sybil Isabel Dorsett | The American

Shirley Ardell Mason (1923–1998) suffered from dissociative identity disorder, causing her to experience multiple personalities. Anika Neuß (deu) visualised Shirley’s sixteen alter egos for BredaPhoto.

Antoine Wagner Creatives in Exil | Migration is the big issue of our time, says Antoine Wagner (usa). He alternates portraits of exiled artists and intellectuals with photos of the Swiss mountains. His great-great-grandfather, the composer Richard Wagner, lived in Swiss exile for nine years.

Nanó Wallenius

Nina Verbruggen Das War Einmal | What does a day in the life of Mrs. Bouwels (92) look like? Nina Verbruggen (nld) made a multi media installation about her grandmother. She can live on her own because she has a support network and can pay for help if she needs to. Not everyone is so lucky.

Is pink a rebellious colour? It is for Nanó Wallenius (fin) who was forbidden to wear pink as a child, it would make her look feminine and weak. Now she explores traditional views of femininity and gender stereotypes in pink self portraits.

Women Are Different from Men | Brigitte Zieger (deu) is critical of the way war and violence are visualised and legitimised in our society. She processed found photos of women holding guns and pistols. The result is frightening and attractive at the same time.

The Absent State This unique project is a collaboration of BredaPhoto and World Press Photo. We wanted to know how self-reliance is experienced in other parts of the world, in countries where there’s no welfare state or social security. We’ve asked five photographers and five writers to set out and explore. → p50

Alejandro Cegarra & Manaure Quintero The Collapse | Venezuela is close to collapse. These rough black and white images show the implosion of the welfare state and the resulting chaos. Made by two photojournalists from Caracas, now the most dangerous city on earth.

Baudouin Mouanda

Congo, Initiatives Palliatives (Congo, Mitigating Initiatives) | The fast growing

Cuba between c ommunism and capitalism Magnum-photographer Carl De Keyzer (1958) stayed in Cuba for three months. He made a series on the uncertain transition from communism to capitalism. Struggle, the need to survive, a lust for life: the meaning of the Spanish word la lucha pertains to the hard lives of Cubans trying to take care of themselves as well as to their optimism. It is an often-heard phrase in current day Cuba, a country changing a communist system for a capitalist one. Part of the population hopes for a better future. Others mostly fear the uncertainty that awaits them. De Keyzer shuns photographical cliches. So we won’t get to see shuffling old ladies in the street or run down taxis. Instead, he photographed strong personalities and surprising scenes in this once secluded society. He shows a terrace where tourists can buy postcards of Fidel Castro and Che Guevara, and a run-down taxi with a hypermodern video system. The Belgian photographer has done several projects on the fall of communism. In the 1980s he travelled through the Soviet Union and made the book Homo Sovieticus (1989). East of Eden (1996) was the result of two years travelling through Eastern Europe. For Zona (2003) he photographed daily life in Siberian prisons. De Keyzer is a member of the renowned photographer agency Magnum Photos.

Unknown war stories Claudia Heinermann (1967) portrayed forgotten victims of the Second World War: the German wolf children who fled from the Russian army to Lithuania. Waltraut Minnt (1936) was seven years old when Russian soldiers raided her home in East Prussia. They raped her mother and put the family on a train to Siberia. Her heavily injured mother died on the way. Waltraut and her older sister were set to work in the Gulag. Only Waltraut survived. At the start of the 1950s she was deported to Lithuania. She didn’t know anyone, didn’t speak the language and wandered across the countryside for years. Finally, a family of farmers took her in. Waltraut grew up and mar ried a heavy drinker. She had six sons with him. Now she lives in a small cottage near the forest. Waltraut still prefers the outdoors. At the end of 1944 the Russian Red Army conquered East Prussia. Hundreds of thousands of people fled the advancing troops, among them many children. They ended up in Lithuania where they tried to survive in the woods and the countryside. The lucky ones were adopted by Lithuanian families and received a new Lithuanian name so the Soviet regime wouldn’t discover their real identities. Only after the fall of the Soviet Union did the stories of these wolf children (wolfskinder) surface. Claudia Heinermann and journalist Sonya Winterberg tracked the remaining wolf children. With portraits, landscapes, historical documents and old pictures they trace their tragic histo ries. Heinermann wants to save these stories for future generations, because, she says, in every war innocent children are involved and traumatised for life.

Intimate Family Portrait by Photographer Laureate Exclusively for BredaPhoto and Photo Week, Photographer Laureate Robin de Puy (1986) made the series Jan, about her great uncle Jan Mallan (81) who has Alzheimer’s disease.

Who is Jan? ‘Jan is my father’s uncle. In the 1960s he moved to Denmark where he still lives with his Danish wife. I’ve always had a close relationship with them and visit every few months. Last year, Jan was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Now it’s like the layers are being peeled away, showing a purer version of my uncle. It’s very sad to see, but also beautiful in a way. He reacts instinctively and pure, almost like a child locked inside the body of a big old man.’

How did your uncle react to being photographed? ‘He thought it was a terrific idea. He really wanted to make this project together with me. He used to like swimming a lot, so I took him swimming in shallow water. At first, his movements were clumsy, but gradually he started having fun. “Did you manage to catch me on film,” he asked. “Wasn’t I under water too much?” I made the moving images together with cameraman Maarten van Rossem.’

What did you want to convey with this project? ‘I don’t know anyone who is as special as my uncle. I wanted to show his unique personality and physique before they disappear.’

The Final Countdown 2,000 times This pioneer of Belgian video art collected over 2,000 YouTube clips of the famous pop song The Final Countdown. Theys’ work often centres on popular culture. At a young age, Koen Theys (1963) established a name for himself as a disruptive artist. In 1983 he was sent from the art academy in Ghent because he had made a video in which he attacked a dead German shepherd dog with an axe. For those who have become curious: Crime01 can be viewed on koentheys.org. Although he was trained as a sculptor, Theys gradually ventured into making videos, starting with filmed performances. When he was only twenty years old, the Museum of Modern Art in New York bought one of his video’s: Diana, about the goddess of the hunt. Popular culture and the deconstruction of Western icons are recurring themes in his work. In the 1980s, he gained world wide recognition with Song of my Soil (Lied van mijn land), a modern interpretation of Richard Wagner’s Ring der Nibelungen and Parsifal, mixed with a criticism of mass entertainment. The recent video Death Fucking Metal (2014) centres on a group of washed-out rock stars. During BredaPhoto, Electron will show The Final Countdown (2010). For this piece, Theys used over 2,000 video clips found on YouTube. In a seemingly endless repetition we hear the famous opening chords of the eighties hit The Final Countdown over and over again. Each time a little different: from an a cappella rendition to a cover by a symphony orchestra. The musicians have one thing in common: they all want to be seen and heard.

Protesters on the waterfront Hop on a boat and admire the photos Mathieu Asselin (1973) took of Occupy. This worldwide protest movement fought for a fairer world. Occupy began on the 17th of September 2011 in Zuccotti Park, New York, near Wall Street. With banners, lectures and play ful protests the Occupyers stood up against growing social and economic equality and the vast influence of the financial sector. The French photographer Mathieu Asselin (1973) was there. He portrayed a motley crew of protesters against a neutral back ground. They hold up banners and signs, raise a clenched fist, or pose intimately with their loved ones. Their faces show anger, but also optimism and hope. The protestors called themselves ‘the ninety-nine percent’, referring to the income inequality in the United States where one percent of the population owns more wealth than the other ninety-nine percent combined. After two months, the tent camp in New York was dis banded. Even though the Occupyers didn’t achieve concrete results at the time, their influence was great. The worldwide Occupy-protests put income inequality and the need to reform the financial system firmly on the political agenda. These discus sions still play an important role in the run up to the elections in the United States as well as in The Netherlands and other European countries. The support for an economic system that only favours the one percent at the top is dwindling.

A city made by people A homemade seating area, plants where they don’t belong and random coat hangers in the street. In Hong Kong, Michael Wolf (1954) found these ‘informal solutions’. In Breda, his photos and videos are next to the items he collected on the streets. Michael Wolf is one of the great image-defining photo graphers of today. He has made famous photography series on megacities Hong Kong and Paris. He has also won two World Press Photo-prizes for his pictures of Chinese factories and crowded Japanese subways. In his hometown Hong Kong, Wolf has been registering the ‘informal solutions’ that people use to claim their own spot in the city: a mini-break in a random place, a self-made seating corner on the street or in a café. ‘Think of it as an encyclopaedia of improvisations in back alleys,’ says Wolf. Next to photos and short videos, Wolf shows the items he found in Hong Kong’s alleyways. When he encountered a special, self-made chair for example, he would ask the owner if it was for sale. In the Museum of the Image (MOTI), you will see which items Wolf brought with him to Breda. Part of his photos can be seen in large format in the outdoor exhibition Chassé XXL. Michael Wolf is not the only reason to visit MOTI. Here you’ll also find the exhibition Free State MOTI. BredaPhoto and MOTI invited the promising young Dutch artists Jaap Scheeren and Coralie Vogelaar to build their own free state.

DIY-planes in the Chinese countryside Xiaoxiao Xu (1984) followed eight Chinese farmers who build their own airplanes from their backyard. She was fascinated by their inventiveness and resourcefulness.

Why do the stories of these farmers appeal to you? ‘I love how they independently seek to fulfil their dreams, right in their own backyard with recycled materials and garden shed tools. They make the impossible possible.’

How did the farmers receive you? ‘They were very friendly. Xu Bin invited me to stay with his family. On the first day he showed me the city. On the second day I joined him to work. On the third day he took me to city hall to apply for funding for his project. And on the fourth day he took me to his wife’s village. In this way you get closer to someone. I listen, I observe, and at the right moment I press the shutter.’

Is there a farmer whose memory you particularly hold dear? ‘I will always remember Xu Bin. He is quiet and smart and realises his dream step by step. He was eighteen years old when he started building planes. Now he’s forty and can live off his airplanes. He even opened an airplane museum in his hometown. I flew with Xu Bin in his plane The White Dragon. It was a dizzying and unforgettable experience.’

Anarchist paradise Skatopia is a place of extremes. No wonder Morgan Ashcom (1982) chose it as backdrop for his fictional series Leviathan. Nothing is what it seems here. Halfway through the 1990s a community of skateboarders began building a skate park in the mountains of Ohio in the United States. It started with a few cement ramps but grew into a complete skaters village called Skatopia. It became famous and notorious for the anarchy, the rough lifestyle of the hundreds of occupants and the exuberant parties and concerts that were held there. This is the backdrop for Morgan Ashcom’s fictional series Leviathan. Between 2009 and 2012, Ashcom took these photographs in a setting where he recognised part of himself. He grew up on an isolated farm in the countryside of Virginia and was a skater for many years. In his photographs we see a man with an eye patch, a burning car, but also a whale’s tail, but nothing is what it seems. Ashcom collaborated with the people he photographed to construct scenes with mythological and allegorical themes. In this way, he utilises photography to engage in storytelling. With Leviathan, Ashcom creates the illusion of a safe and secluded society. The land appears to be on the verge of some great change, just as it does in the myth of the great sea monster Leviathan.

Photographer and futurologist Usually photography is used to record reality. But why shouldn’t we use it to envision the future as well? ‘Imagine an Earth destroyed by climate change, war, ollution and toxic waste. All we have left is plastic and metal,’ says p Casper Fitzhue (1990), a photographer studying in Antwerp. In this situation, people would be forced to think of something new. At first glance, Fitzhue’s futuristic images might seem computer generated, but they are actually the result of a lengthy and skilful process. From the plastic of model warplanes, tanks and helicopters, he made new types of flowers. Fitzhue: ‘At first they looked more like satellites or space ships. I hung the flowers upside down by a thread and photographed them against a black or white background. The flowers really started coming alive when I used colour gels. You can almost smell them now.’ Fitzhue used a long shutter time. Because the flowers are in motion, we perceive a flow of colours and get a sense of depth. ‘It cost me 1200 photos to get that first one right,’ says Fitzhue. The images aren’t completely sharp, but that wasn’t the intention. ‘Everything is handmade. I want you to see the plastic of the flowers, the metal frame, my finger prints.’ His flowers symbolise nostalgia, the things we miss when they’re no longer there, but they also symbolise hope. Fitzhue considers himself a cyber optimist, he says. He isn’t actually afraid the world is doomed. ‘I think we’re creative and inventive enough to prevent that from happening.’

Phantom Images The portraits of the talented Belgian photographer Eva Beazar (1987) consist of layered passport photographs of people who are important to her. In their eyes lies a lifetime of stories. Eva Beazar describes her mysterious portraits in black and grey as ‘phantom images’. With their hazy look, these photos almost seem drawn with charcoal. The portraits are actually comprised of several photographs placed on top of each other. Beazar put the focus on the eyes, instantly drawing attention. She formed completely new faces: you never know where one face begins and the other ends. Yet the goal of a passport photo is to be as objective as possible, the law even dictates what a passport photo should look like. Beazar’s pictures are anything but objective. We can interpret her work as a search for identity, she says. That phenomenon is as intangible as the individuals in her photos. Beazar: ‘It’s not exactly clear what an identity is: not for an individual, and least of all for a community. Identities are constantly changing.’ Beazar made a series of intimate portraits. ‘One by one, they are all passport photos of people I know well, or people I have lost. From a young age I have been confronted with loss. I took these experiences and used them in these series. In a way, this project is also a search for my own identity.’

The Absent State

A BredaPhoto and World Press Photo exclusive project Five photographers from five continents explored what self-sufficiency means in their countries: from abandoned children in the Chinese countryside to drifters along the American highway. YOU are this year’s theme of BredaPhoto. You are the man or woman, boy or girl who stands up for him- or herself. The individual who is creative and innovative, but also needs a little help at times. In Europe we have become used to the safety net the government provides. But because of budget cuts and reforms, that safety net is no longer a given. BredaPhoto and World Press Photo wanted to know what self-sufficiency looks like in other parts of the world. In countries where there has never been a welfare state, or where there’s a lot less social security than here. We’ve asked five photographers from five continents to tell their stories. You will see their work in the exhibition The Absent State, free of charge in the inner courtyard of the Breda’s Museum. In the accompanying photo book five local writers tell the stories behind these magnificent documentary series.

Drifters Take the classic American photography series by Bryan Schutmaat – you might remember him from two years ago when he showed his photos of mining communities in the American West at BredaPhoto. This time, Schutmaat photographed the drifters who hitchhike across America. His timeless black and 50

white photographs fit in a long tradition of American documen tary photography. The people in Schutmaat’s photos lead a nomadic existence. They symbolise American ideals like freedom and independence. But is their choice a voluntary one? They live in seclusion, but also in poverty. Or, as Travis Klunick in his accompanying essay writes: ‘Some people lead hard lives.’

Little children From the United States we cross the Pacific Ocean and reach the Chinese countryside. There, Jia Dai Teng Fei found children who have to fend for themselves. Their parents abandoned them at a young age. Some of these children are no older than four years, yet they take care of their grandmother or sick father. We see them lugging around heavy farming tools. They already have the hands of old labourers. Jia shows another side of China: not the crowded cities, but the hard lives in the countryside.

Creative and confronting Self-sufficiency comes in many guises. Baudouin Mouanda shows that it can also lead to enormous creativity. He photographed youngsters in Brazzaville (Congo) who figured out inventive ways to deal with the frequent power cuts at home. Some youngsters study underneath streetlights. Others earn pocket money by selling and repairing batteries and generators. Where the state lacks, volunteers often take over. Yannis Kontos followed the counsellors who care for the Greek homeless. Their number has exploded since Greece suffered huge budget cuts imposed by international moneylenders. Bryan Schutmaat – Vessels  → p15, 67

And what happens when the state fails to act at all? In Venezuela Alejandro Cegarra and Manaure Quintero shot some disturbing images. Their country is on the brink of collapse. The f ormerly generous welfare state has all but disappeared. Sick people can only pray for recovery, as medicine is hard to come by. The tension in the streets is increasing and authorities can no longer curb the explosion of violence.

The following writers were matched to the photographers of The Absent State: María José Gómez (ven), Ifrikia Kengue (cog), Travis Klunick (usa), Weina Li (chn), Fotini (Fenia) Chala (grc). What do self-reliance and informal care mean to elderly people? Discover this in two exhibitions in nursing homes De Leystroom and Ruitersbos. The residents took photos of each other, resulting in touching images of small, but meaningful gestures. These ego-documents express strength as well as vulnerability. The photos were taken under the guidance of photographer IIse Wolf and Cora van Peer. Belcrum is the hotspot in Breda for start-ups and artists. It’s a posi tive example of YOU: self-reliance leading to creativity. The Speel huislaan has always been an important street in the former industri al area of Belcrum. Nowadays it connects the new train station with exciting places like 10  Belcrum Beach, 11  STEK and 13  Electron. With materials from the city archives, students of AKV | St. Joost made work on Breda and Belcrum. It’s exhibited in seven living rooms in the Speelhuislaan and can be visited in combination with a walking seven-course lunch, prepared by vegan caterer De Gouden Radijs. During the festival, the Speelhuislaan is a ‘Museum Street’, with images from every photo series. Image Hunters is an online museum for personal image collec tions, often obsessively compiled on one particular theme. Today, the best image collectors present their remarkable series on the stage of the Chassé Theater. BredaPhoto and the 5  Museum of the Image (MOTI) present this second edition of Image Hunters. Thanks to the Internet and social media, collecting images is no longer the prerogative of museums. It has become common practice. Countless people share their images on Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram or Tumblr. One person searches for images of flames, another looks for car for sale-signs, or women selling their w edding dress with obscured faces in their photos. Image Hunters sticks out because of their impressive collections on one theme. Also visit: beeldjagers.org. 70

Close Encounters Kosovo: Future Stories from the past

di 27 september [tijd onbekend] 6  Club Solo

Sat 1 October / 14.45–15.30 X  Stadsgalerij

Werckmeister Harmonies, directed by Béla Tarr, is set in a small Hungarian village that’s visited by a circus. Its biggest attraction is The Prince. All the villagers come out to see him. But when he doesn’t appear, the sour mood turns into a revolt. This film is a big inspiration to Ine Lamers → p18: ‘In my projects I try to show that which doesn’t want to be seen.’

Photographer Willem Poelstra documents the aftermath of war: the scars of the Second World War in his own family and the wounds of the war in Kosovo. History keeps repeating itself. His project For Hanna. Future Stories from the Past was exhibited at BredaPhoto 2012. Four years later he shows the completed series in Kosovo, where the war has left deep fissures between different ethnic groups. Today, he shares his experience working on a long term project and a complex and sensitive topic.
