Dear colleagues, Dear readers, I have the pleasurable task of introducing the current issue of ZETOR NEWS. Since our last issue our tractors have put in many hours of work, helping farmers and agriculturalists in almost 50 countries around the world with spring sowing and ploughing, carrying out hard work for breeders and as indispensable helpers and support during demanding summer harvests on farms and cooperatives. Just as our clients have tackled pitfalls in their work, our ZETOR team has tackled a  number of challenges and continues to do so. We were able to predict and prepare for some of these challenges, while others were wholly unexpected and required us to mobilize all of our forces to handle them. You can find out about what happened during this period as well as what lies ahead just by spending a few minutes reading this issue of ZETOR NEWS. All of us have noticed that the situation on the global agricultural market is far from rosy. You can read about what’s  happening, how markets have been developing and what steps we at ZETOR are taking to successfully tackle external factors on page 9. It’s ZETOR’s 70th birthday – a very good reason for a proper celebration. Turn to page 4 to find out where and who wished ZETOR happy birthday and what events still await us. ZETOR includes innovations, new projects, expansion of the product portfolio – and you’ll find information about all of these topics in ZETOR NEWS on page 11. There goes a tractor, it’s a ZETOR – those are the lyrics of the song we all know. But did you know that this year our ZETORs didn’t go to the mountains – they went all the way to the

WE MAKE ZETOR

ZETOR celebrates its 70th birthday in grand style ZETOR customers and fans at home and around the world are enjoying ZETOR’s 70th birthday. Celebrations were kicked off in late May in Brno with the first stop of the ZETOR TRACTOR SHOW for Czech and Slovak customers and business partners. ZETOR’s birthday celebrations also included an all-day event for company employees and the public at the ZETOR TRACTORS plant in Brno, which included a full program of events. Visitors learned about the brand’s  history, saw the current lines of tractors and the future of the ZETOR brand, which is embodied by the ZETOR by Pininfarina design concept and two new prototypes, the NEW MAJOR and the ZETOR PROTOTYPE 50. 70 years after the founding of ZETOR, we are celebrating through social events as well as improved availability of our machines and customer services. In June attention was focused on Germany, specifically Witzenhausen, where a new sales and service branch office was opened. In mid-August our Polish affiliation opened a modern new office in the town of Kalisz that will be a one-stop shop, where customers will be able to try out tractors in working conditions, take part in training sessions and get all of their machine service needs taken care of.

fair, which took place in Brno in the spring. We launched a website about the brand’s history and a contest with great prizes. Our new products include the FORTERRA model series with a STAGE IV emissions compliance solution. We gave a glimpse of what the near future holds by introducing the ZETOR PROTOTYPE 50 and the new MAJOR and of course ZETOR by Pininfarina. We celebrated at trade fairs and exhibitions over the course of the year in Great Britain, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Greece, Slovakia, Slovenia and we are planning to visit the Netherlands, France, Poland Trade fairs and a world and other countries with our fans and record attempt th supporters. We officially kicked off our 70 birthday celebrations at the TECHAGRO trade SPECAGRA, ZETOR TRACTORS’ business partner in Lithuania, organized a  significant event during the ZETOR celebrations. Using a  CRYSTAL tractor, a  sprayer and a  GPS, it drew the Lithuanian coat-of-arms on a 20-hectare field in an attempt to break the world record in the “largest picture painted on land” category. picture was visible from space and awaits entry into the Guinness Book of World Records. Thousands of people came to events around the world to wish ZETOR happy birthday, with 5,000 people alone attending the event at ZETOR TRACTORS’ plant in Brno. In some places fans organized their own celebrations. In Finland, for example, fans went on an expedition across Finland all the way to the Arctic Circle in their tractors. “ZETOR’s 70 th birthday is an important milestone in our company’s  history, which is why we are so glad so many people want to share it with us. It’s clear that the ZETOR brand’s  appeal goes beyond customers – a  much broader circle of people regardless of profession or age has a heartfelt connection to ZETOR. We thank everyone who supports us on our journey forward and into the future,” says Margaréta Víghová, Corporate Communication Director of ZETOR TRACTORS a.s.

Birthday contest winners announced The history of the ZETOR brand would be much less colourful without customers’ own stories. Our online contest designed for customers gave them an opportunity to share their personal experiences with the ZETOR brand and its machines. ”Personal relationships are key,” says a ZETOR brand salesman Two major ZETOR tractor salesmen revealed their secrets of success – N&N KOŠÁTKY managing director Aleš Nezbeda and Josef Falta of AGRICO, whose companies are among the leading sales representatives of ZETOR in the Czech Republic. How long have you worked with ZETOR TRACTORS a.s. and what does the ZETOR brand mean to you? A few words with... Pat Carroll, Irish engineer: How I won a contest at the ZETOR TRACTOR SHOW Irishman Pat Carroll won a contest at last year’s ZETOR TRACTOR SHOW by submitting the best guess of how many kilometres the truck transporting tractors travels during the entire roadshow. How did you come up with the number and how did you like the prize – an excursion to the ZETOR TRACTORS’ plant in Brno?

I really just estimated the number of kilometres. And it was the very first time I’d gone to the ZETOR TRACTOR SHOW. I went to visit a friend of mine and he took me to the show. I own just one small tractor, I’m not a farmer, but I work in a company that sells ZETOR brand tractors and other products. I  admire the company’s  history and

I like old models. What I like about the current-day models is their simplicity, most of all in terms of maintenance. I was happy with the prize. I’d never been to the Czech Republic before. I was really impressed by the modern manufacturing methods at ZETOR TRACTORS and also by ZETOR by Pininfarina. And people in Brno are really nice.

Hubert Bierbauer, Business Manager, ZETOR DEUTSCHLAND: My path to ZETOR by Pininfarina design concept. Working for the ZETOR brand became a big challenge for me. I’m glad that I  can help build the brand’s position in Austria and strengthen its position in Southern Germany (Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg). ZETOR is returning to Austria after a long pause, so we’re just at the start of a long journey that will, I’m sure, lead to success with development When I first had an opportunity to visit of a competitive sales network in Austhe ZETOR TRACTORS plant in Brno, tria and Germany in a matter of years. customers available sales and service sites at the big exhibition in Wels at the end of the year (Agraria Wels, November 30 through December 3 – editor’s note). Over a longer term horizon, the ideal network would include about 20 dealers which would cover potential demand across all of Austria. I’m sure that long-term efforts to find motivated dealers, work with them and fulfil our promises will lead to success. We need the present-day ZETOR to be completely open to new things, which is definitely the main prerequisite for moving forward in the right direction.

Paulen Nicolas, French tractor collector: Tractors have been my passion since I was 15 Paulen Nicolas owns more than fifty historical ZETOR tractors and has his own fan club. How did you get into this hobby? I  star ted buying my first tractors when I was 15, naturally with financial help from my mother at first. My grandfather introduced me to collecting. Since I am a small farmer myself, I have used some of the tractors from my collection for work. I bought my first tractors in France because they were cheap and later I began buying in Great Britain. I also have tractors without cabins in my collection – such as the model 2023 and the Super 42 crawler tractor, which I  am most proud of. It was really difficult to find. Aside from that I have a John Deere tractor with no cabin which was produced in the ZETOR plant in Brno.

A star named ZETOR

Tomáš Zeman bought a ZETOR FORTERRA 130. He was so thrilled with it that he shared his experience with us. We bring you his “user review” in an editorially abbreviated version.

Tractors from Brno once again excelled at exhibitions at home and abroad, taking home awards. And there were more dates marked in the calendar.

I bought my FORTERRA 130 last spring. You can’t stop ZETOR – full speed ahead even after 60

In April the ZETOR brand presented itself in the Czech Republic, showing a number of new products that will soon enhance the product portfolio of ZETOR TRACTORS a.s. At a  stand over 500 square metres in size at the TECHAGRO trade fair in Brno, we showed the updated FORTERRA tractor, which features an engine compliant with STAGE IV standards, and a prototype of the new MAJOR, which is scheduled to go into production at the end of this year. The ZETOR by Pininfarina design concept attracted great interest as did the ZETOR PROTOTYPE 50, the vision of our fifth model series with a three-cylinder engine.

The ZETOR brand presented at the 176th Royal Highland Show in Edinburgh. Scota light-bulb in the back lights, that was tish farmers most admired the CRYSTAL all,” said Martin Havelka, the proud own- 160, no doubt for its appealing purchase er of another two ZETOR 25 tractors. price and efficiency.

ZETOR fans celebrate the brand’s big birthday, often in very creative ways. For example, fans saddled up an old ZETOR 25 and took off for distant horizons. Let other tractors be towed: Martin Havelka takes his ZETOR 25 to veteran gatherings in the Czech Republic on its own wheels. To celebrate the Brno-based brand’s 70th birthday, he decided to drive his tractor 800 kilometres to a gathering at the Baltic seaside resort of Łazy. The sixty-two-year-old tractor was renovated two years ago but hasn’t had any special modifications made. He managed his journey, which was divided into four fullday stages, without any problems – as if it was a trip to the field just beyond the village. “On the last day I had to change

Fans from the Finnish club Tyrvään seudun Zetoristit had a similar experience with the Brno diehard when they took six ZETOR 25 tractors on an excursion measuring an unbelievable 1,500 kilometres to the Arctic Circle to see Santa Claus. The trip to Rovaniemi in Lapland and back took the tractors, which average sixty years in age, seven days, and although it was an admirable feat, it actually just confirmed the legendary durability of the 25. The weather could have been better though.

In August we presented the PROTOTYPE 50 at the traditional Bread Basket trade fair in České Budějovice and for our neighbours in Slovakia at the Agrokomplex trade fair in Nitra, where the FORTERRA HD 150 won the Golden Sickle award. However, the trade fair season extends beyond summer’s end. In September we will go to the Netherlands for the Nederlandse Landbouwbeurs trade fair and to France and Germany.

In contrast there was plenty of summer sun in Malá Lehota near Banská Bystrice in Slovakia, where the second annual Zetor 25 Cup took place. Twenty-eight machines participated in the Z-25 model competition show and were admired by over 4,500 fans. During the show, visitors cheered the agricultural old-timers in disciplines such as log skidding, sprints at different gears and a contest in tractor control skills.

Current market developments

Current developments in the tractor industry In the last three years, tractor manufacturers have faced a serious sales crisis. ZETOR, however, is holding its positions and the company has even strengthened in some markets.

Falling purchase prices of agricultural commodities, lifting of the European quotas on milk prices and Russia’s embargo on imports of commodities and machinery from Europe – all this is currently reflected in the declining sales of new tractors. In addition, the governments of some countries failed to prepare subsidy schemes to support purchasing of agricultural equipment in time, which forced many farmers to postpone purchasing of new machinery. Expressed in figures, the European market dropped by 7.5% year-onyear with the decline reaching almost double that figure in some countries and plummeting by a whopping 42% in Poland. However, in general the situation is expected to stabilize in the coming months and demand should start picking up.

Tractor is Zetor. Since 1946.

But even in Europe there are some exceptions to this situation: compared to the same period last year tractor sales on the Lithuanian market doubled, which had a positive impact on the sales of ZETOR tractors as well. Although Germany reported an overall drop in tractor sales in the first half of this year, tractors from Brno are gaining in popularity and ZETOR’s market share in this market, the biggest in Europe, continues to grow. In any case, ZETOR TRACTORS a.s. has taken a number of steps to bring the situation under control and to ensure continued growth. Special offers and marketing activities to attract customers were launched on a number of markets. The medium-term goal of the company is to strengthen its position in Western Europe. In order to achieve this objective

a new affiliation office was opened in Central Germany (you can read more about the office in the NEWS section below), a new director of Zetor France Sarl was appointed, and Zetor UK Ltd expanded its sales team. Since the start of the year, cooperation has been established with 14 new dealers in Western Europe and negotiations on cooperation are under way with dozens more. Apart from Iran, the other new markets which ZETOR has entered include Turkey and Myanmar (Burma). Negotiations are underway with more countries in Europe and Africa, with Croatia currently closest to signing an agreement between a national distributor and ZETOR TRACTORS, a.s. ZETOR TRACTORS a.s. thus continues unlocking new opportunities and believes the future will be brighter.

See what’s new...

Years of fame and big changes ZETOR tractors have undergone an impressive journey since the start of production in Zábrdovice in the beginning of the 1960s. Over the past four decades they conquered many peaks, but they also faced many challenges. In 70 years, 1.3 million ZETOR tractors have been produced and exported to 136 countries. By the time the ZETOR brand turned sweet sixteen, it already boasted 150,000 manufactured tractors, two thirds of which were exported to countries all over the world. In 1960, the production of Unified Series I featuring three basic models and a number of modifications, including versions for mountainous areas, was launched. The use of uniform parts in various machines was a unique concept at the time. ZETORMATIC, a hydraulic lifting system with automatic depth control developed in the same year, was another unique feature of the tractors from Brno. Production of Unified Series I  was launched in the 1960s and ZETOR quickly expanded globally. Licenced assembly lines put in operation in Burma, India, Ghana and Iraq achieved a total aggregate production of over 200,000 machines by the beginning of the 1990s. At that time, simple and durable ZETOR machines made a significant contribution to the motorization of agriculture in Asia and Latin America.

By 1980, when the company’s logo changed from the original ZBROJOVKA Brno’s stylized gun barrel to its current form, the company already manufactured over 30,000 ZETOR tractors a year. In the same year, the first CRYSTAL featuring a turbo-charged engine was introduced. sight in rural areas of the Czech Republic and elsewhere. In the current ZETOR product portfolio, the PROXIMA models are based on US I, while the FORTERRA models are based on US III. However, more major changes were still to come for the ZETOR brand. These changes started with the company’s privatization in July 1993, during which a  part of the assets owned by ZETOR, a  state-owned company at the time, were converted to a joint-stock company. However, the company struggled to keep afloat in the late 1990s and a revitalization plan had to be drawn up and the company started looking for a strategic partner to make the ZETOR brand excel once again. This wasn’t achieved until 2002, when HTC holding a.s. became the new owner, immediately adopting measures to stabilize the brand and initiating massive restructuring. ZETOR was thus rescued and a new era of its development under HTC was opened that continues to this day.

More modern, energy efficient and comfortable The FORTERRA model series introduces a number of innovations that will make operation of these tractors even more efficient. The basic FORTERRA series model will now be marketed as FORTERRA CL, the CL standing for “classic”, and it will feature minor upgrades to the interior – the reverser lever has been moved to the left side and the customers can choose from a broader variety of seats, which will also be available for the FORTERRA HSX and HD. All models in the series are now equipped with automatic PowerShift and the headlamps have been relocated to better assist work in the dark. The FORTERRA HD has also become more powerful and can now tow a trailer weighting up to 31 tons.

Tractor is Zetor. Since 1946.

The FORTERRA boasts an engine designed by ZETOR with 16-valve cylinder heads and power ratings from 96 to 147 hp. The design of the engine, which is adapted to each specific model in the FORTERRA series, guarantees a long service life, optimal operation and low fuel consumption. The new drive unit boasts very good acceleration and easy starting even at low temperatures. The new versions of FORTERRA tractors now meet the most stringent STAGE IV emission standard. This standard specifies the maximum level of emissions permitted for diesel engines used in non-

road mobile machinery, including tractors. Compliance with the more stringent standard valid since 2014 was achieved through a combination of technologies including an active diesel particulate filter and a system for selective catalytic reduction (SCR). The new emissions reduction measures also resulted in optimal engine torque and significant fuel savings. “In an independent test carried out by Mendel University in Brno, fuel savings of up to 20% were achieved when operating the tractor with a 20-ton trailer in economy mode,” says Adam Žert, Sales and Marketing Director.

Current news about ZETOR from the Czech Republic Inspired by nature and imagination. Introducing ZETOR 2017 calendars strates that even a calendar can be a work of art. Creative photographs play with the viewer’s  imagination. Our tractors are presented indirectly on the main photograph for each month and each photograph is associated with a particular story. The central motif is lyrical representation of scenes from nature characteristic for the given month. We have been working on the new calendar since the beginning of the year. The actual shooting sessions with models took four days. Compared to last year’s calendar, the final photographs were created with very few post-production modifications.

Preparation of calendars for next year is already in full swing. Similarly as in past years, we are preparing two types of calendars. The first one will be dedicated purely to ZETOR products and the other is a special limited edition. This year, the limited edition was inspired by nature and traditional seasonal activities. The 2017 special edition of the calendar demon-

“Last year’s edition featured complex photorealistic collages. The process was very time-consuming mainly in the postproduction phase. This year’s  edition is demanding mainly in terms of preparation and the actual photo shooting sessions. Everything you will see on the final photographs this year is reality, just as it looked during the shooting. We did not add any special effects,” says Martin Fridner, photographer of the new Zetor calendar for 2017.

New website The previous design of our website was created in 2009 and although there were some minor modifications added later, it no longer met today’s requirements for modern presentation of the company. The newly re-designed website is much more user friendly and has also been optimized for viewing on mobile devices. The new website now focuses more on retail customers, offering them redesigned product pages. It will provide more detailed information about each product and product presentations were made more attractive with the use of multimedia (photographs, video clips, etc.). Also the section presenting the company’s history has been completely redesigned and it now offers dozens of historical photos and videos. After launching the new design, we have seen the total number of visits grow by 50% and the number of visits from mobile devices increased by 120%.

Current news about ZETOR from around the world There goes a tractor, es ist ZETOR ZETOR’s  market share in Germanspeaking countries continues to grow and we opened a new affiliation office at the end of June, which has become a major distribution and service centre. ZETOR DEUTSCHLAND GmbH, our new office based in Witzenhausen, Germany, will become a  distribution and service centre for Northern Germany, the largest European market for agricultural machinery. The existing headquarters of our German affiliation in Furth im Wald will continue to focus on Bavaria and BadenWürttemberg, Austria and Switzerland. The affiliation in Furth im Wald will also keep the existing spare parts warehouse, which will provide spare parts to all of these three countries. The new office is a full-fledged sales and service point with the necessary material and personnel resources to provide services even to distant locations. Thanks

to the central position of Witzenhausen in Hesse in Central Germany, we will be able to provide better sales and support services to farmers and better support our dealer network in Germany. The new headquarters are also conveniently located in a site operated by DEULA, a company providing professional training to future farmers. They will thus become aware of the ZETOR brand early on at the very start of their professional careers. Despite the crisis, ZETOR has been strengthening its position in Germanspeaking countries significantly. In particular, the presentation of the ZETOR by Pininfarina design concept at last year’s Agritechnica left a strong impression. “Over the first half of this year alone, we managed to increase sales in this region by 57% compared to the same period last year. In Switzerland, sales of ZETOR tractors actually tripled in 2015. Now we want to

focus on developing a completely new sales network in Austria,” says Pavel Jahoda, Director of Zetor DEUTSCHLAND GmbH. The opening of our new affiliation in Witzenhausen was accompanied by a threeday celebration during which our customers, business partners and the general public had the opportunity to see ZETOR machines from all model series and they even had an opportunity to test them in the field with aggregates. The prototypes of a new addition to the MAJOR model series and the three-cylinder ZETOR PROTOTYPE 50 attracted a  lot of attention. A colourful accompanying program which primarily featured the ZETOR anniversary and the company’s history was prepared for visitors of the events.

and partners and to present the ZETOR brand to them from all angles, and in exactly the way the customer wishes,” says Arkadiusz Fulek, Director of ZETOR POLSKA Sp. z o.o.

“Our main motivation for making the decision to build new headquarters was improving the quality and comfort of the services offered to our customers and partners. Presentation of the machines, the possibility to immediately test them under operation, a servicing facility, spare parts warehouse, but also a showroom, all in one location enables us to devote 100% of our efforts to our customers

The 3-hectare area includes not only a place for parking new tractors, but also a  showroom where visitors can learn about the brand history and see both current and historical tractors. There is also an outdoor track and an area available for testing specific machines or models during work. The office area offers several conference and meeting rooms, and last but not least, also houses a  servicing facility and a store selling spare parts, promotional materials and other minor items from the ZETOR portfolio. Visitors and company employees can comfortably park their cars in front of the building, where a sufficient number of parking spaces has been established.

“We support the activities of the subsidiaries of ZETOR TRACTORS a.s. Therefore, we positively perceive the establishment of these new headquarters, and appreciate the uniform visual style that has been used for the construction. The customer is a key partner for the brand and it is praiseworthy that Zetor Polska has made another big step in improving the quality of services and servicing for clients,” says Margaréta Víghová, Corporate Communication Director. The new headquarters offer an area twice the size of the original headquarters. The premises have also been adapted for holding presentations and training sessions, as well as visits and tours by school groups. Construction of the new headquarters started in the autumn of last year and finished in June this year.

september 2016 News about ZETOR tractors

Current news about ZETOR from around the world ZETOR breaks records. In Lithuania, we created an image visible from space

As part of the celebrations of ZETOR’s 70th birthday, a  picture visible from space was created using a tractor. An ordinary stepladder would not suffice to paint a  picture of this size. Besides, a canvas with an area of over 20 hectares, or eleven football fields, would not fit into any painter’s studio. A field was thus used as the canvas for painting the picture visible from space, and a CRYSTAL ZETOR tractor became a brush spraying the paint as it travelled

across the field. SPECAGRA, the exclusive importer of ZETOR tractors to Lithuania, decided to make an attempt to create the largest picture painted on land – a knight with a sword in hand and a double cross on the shield. The same image can be found on the Lithuanian coat-of-arms.

sprayer filled with ecological paint commonly used to paint lines on football fields at stadiums. The paint covered an area of 6.02 hectares. 1,200 visitors came to see this grandiose spectacle including the company’s customers and business partners, who also came to see the ZETOR by Pininfarina design concept.

“We believe that the work has a chance of being entered in the Guinness Book of Records. At the moment, a professional panel is assessing it. If the world record is confirmed, Lithuania shall beat the current record holder several times over. The current record holder is a picture in Turkey that covers an area of 1.2 hectares,” says Renaldas Pelanis, director of SPECAGRA, which is the organiser of the attempt to get an entry in the Guinness Book of Records.

“The Lithuanian partner has already proved its ability to break world records in the past. In 2014 the company successfully broke the record in the gathering of vehicles of a single brand at one place by forming the longest line of tractors in the world. To celebrate its 15th anniversary, SPECAGRA succeeded to gather 115 ZETOR tractors including, apart from the current models, a ZETOR 25. With such inventive marketing or simply with such a  sense of humour, it is no wonder that ZETOR ranks among the three bestselling tractor brands in the Baltics,” adds Margaréta Víghová, Corporate Communication Director of ZETOR TRACTORS a.s.

The painting of the picture took two hours and fifteen minutes and the tractor was in automatic mode all that time. The picture was created using a Unia Europa
