WATERLESS URINALS CONSERVE WATER Look out Main Street; we have an old friend at the sustainable table. Urinals, urinals that use no water are proven and tested. They are currently used at the Rose Bowl, Hollywood Bowl, Los Angeles Coliseum and even Beijing “Bird’s Nest” stadium, built for the 2008 Olympics. This is evidence that they work! One company based in Los Angeles, Falcon Waterfree Technologies LLC, has gained a foothold on the industry with over eighty percent of the marketplace. The urinals have become a mainstay for property owners looking to earn certification from the United States Green Building Council’s LEED (Green) certification for improved real estate. The waterless urinals account for about 15 percent of the points needed for LEED certification. The competition includes new players Kohler Co. and American Standard, both major players in the plumbing industry. The urinals are somewhat affordable, with the small falcon fixture costing around $200. They are easy to install and plumbing contractors’ charge an average of $150 per unit for installation. Why throw money away? Get these for your business or property ASAP. The next question is when will the big box retailers like Home Depot and Lowes sell the urinals? Waterless urinals promote water conservation and bring awareness that 48 of 50 States have water shortages. The perception that clean tap water will be available for future generations is something we will fight with education and technology. We have the technology and innovation to install waterless urinals for all property sectors, but until the education, pricing and installation become part of our everyday lives, we will witness very few outside of commercial or industrial property sectors. I have come to the conclusion that the only way waterless urinals will become mainstream is if they come with some type of incentive. Combine waterless hot water heaters with water catchment and containment systems and now we have a package that will create Green Careers and job placement. This combination of water free products would create jobs while limiting outsourcing. The future seems bright but we must fight and promote change, together we must protect our environment and water supply!
