Fast forward an hour or two and I received a call from one of our summer interns James “Matt” Patterson. Matt wanted to say “thanks” and tell me he was headed to the border of Haiti with a local Mission. Then I received another call from Jadon Bateman and he also said “thanks”. Jadon’s mom dropped him off one day about ten years ago when he Andre Jamal Walker was fourteen years old.

Greetings! Welcome to another exciting edition of the BIOTECH INSIDER. In this edition, we will be comparing and contrasting the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries as well as providing some insight on how these two fields have worked together to better our lives and environment. Let’s begin. Biotechnology has been and can be defined in many different ways; however, all the definitions arrive at the same meaning. Biotechnology has been referred to as the use of biological processes to make products; technology based on biology, biochemistry, genetics, agriculture, food science, and medicine; and technology to include recombinant DNA techniques (e.g. genetic engineering). These definitions, in fact, are all true. Simply, biotechnology is the use of living organisms or their products to modify human health and human environment. On balance, the pharmaceutical industry is defined as the development and manufacture of drugs (medication, medicines) for treating diseases, disorders, and illnesses. These drugs, legal to use in the United States, often cure, prevent, recognize and relieve pain. But it wasn’t until these two industries met and partnered that they began to change and expand their respective fields and human lives. Through the fusion of these two industries came the discovery and introduction of biotechnological drugs. These drugs which are therapeutic proteins such as monoclonal antibodies, blood proteins, and enzymes are produced by a living form specifically to help fight disease. And at the present, there are hundreds of biotechnological drugs under research. Both the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry have preserved and improved the quality of life.

NEWS - SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS SENSITIVE TALENT DEMANDS AMENITIES FROM FIRMS Firms that employ people who are sensitive to amenities (good weather, high quality schools, low crime rates, a clean environment, cultural opportunities) are attracted to locations that offer these amenities. Instead of workers following firms, firms follow workers. Amenities are most important for firms that employ high income or skilled workers. We have seen and heard stories about the dot-com dress code and environment with funky sofas and boom box music. With such a large percent of people out of work, who and where are the new opportunities to access this economy? The GREEN Movement comes to mind!

Yes! We are trying to channel the positive green vibes. This time by creating a partnership of public and private, old and young, Wall Street and poor folk. Flossy will use their proven model “EVERYBODY WORKS” to teach and train basic green building practices and green technology. Many green veterans are tired of hearing of LEED or Green Globes standards with no action. This is our 22nd year of green workforce training, yet we have never had a budget or partners.
