Dear Friends,
First, my sincere condolences to those who have lost family, friends, and neighbours recently. We’ve suffered a number of losses in the village in a short space of time. Please get in touch if you need some support. We have a service for remembering loved ones on the 2nd of November. The details are in the church section. At this service, we read the names of all who have had funerals in church over the past year, but I would also like to invite you to add other names you’d like read out. You can add these to the list as you enter the Church.
This month I’m mainly writing to you about the upper churchyard – the area around the church building between High Street and Church Road. However, before I do that I want to pay tribute to the volunteers who keep our cemetery section looking so loved and cared for. They do great work with great respect. Sadly, they sometimes receive abuse from people. This is unacceptable. They deserve cake!
Over the years, many people have contributed to maintaining and developing the two churchyards. The upper churchyard – around the church itself – is now closed for new burials. It is a large space with great potential for all creatures great or small. We will be looking at ways of enhancing its natural beauty for the enjoyment of the whole community – people, pets, plants, and wildlife.
This takes a bit of planning, as well as some doing, so we’d like to hear your thoughts on how you would like to see your churchyard enhanced, and if you’d be interested in helping out.
Over the next few weeks, you have the chance to let us know how you use the churchyard, how you would like to use the churchyard, and any thoughts or ideas you have on how to improve its beauty and biodiversity, attracting beneficial insects, butterflies, birds.
Please help by answering the questions in the survey in the magazine, cut it out and leave it in the box in the church porch. Alternatively, larger copies will be available in the back of the church.
Every blessing, Kathryn

Ahoy Shipmates - this was the greeting given to all of our customers who joined in on September 19th ‘International Talk Like a Pirate Day’, complete with parrot, eye patches, pirate hats and a life size model of Captain Jack Sparrow. Sadly we were unable to offer a tot of rum due to a lack of licence; however, it was great fun. The Cafe does hold an event each month, usually accompanied by a special cake and food menu, please keep a look out and join in with the fun.
Planned events for the rest of 2024 are St Andrews Day on 29th November (30th is a Saturday and shorter opening). We plan to have a Scottish themed menu so please join us and if you have a kilt or some tartan to wear feel free to join in. Christmas jumper week will be from 16th December and will be in support of the Carl Lewis Foundation. Many in the village have supported Catherine Eastaff and her Coffee and Cake for Carl fund raising events and we at the Café thought we could have some fun and support a great cause. The Café will make a donation for everyone who wears a festive jumper. More information can be found at carllewisfoundation.org There will also be several seasonal treats during December.
The MacMillan Coffee Morning in September has raised £500 so far . Donations made by text or using the QR code will be notified to us in due course. A huge thank you to everyone who came in on the 27th September and also to our amazing team of bakers for the very generous and tasty cakes.
If your group or organisation within the village are in need of help with funding for equipment, resources or a special project, drop in and collect an application form from us. We try to help all of the village groups. Next month we will publish a list of all the projects which have been supported throughout 2024

Braunston
Parish Council – Councillor’s report
I am often asked “What is the Parish Council?” and “What do you talk about at Council Meetings?” The answer is that we discuss a wide range of issues that concern local residents, maintaining the village and local topics in general. We follow a set agenda each month that includes reports from Councillors and village organisations, planning applications and much more. Our meetings are open to the public and all minutes are available on the Braunston Village website for you to read. www.braunston.org.uk
Below I have mentioned just a few items that were included in last month’s meeting.
Our District Councillor reported last month that interestingly Northamptonshire was one of the 10 counties that experienced their wettest September since records began in 1836, recording three times their average September rainfall. As a result many residential and business properties, as well as schools and caravan parks, experienced severe flooding. As we continue to experience more frequent and severe events associated with climate change, discussions are ongoing to seek sustainable, long term solutions for tackling flooding issues and local emergency action plans.
The Parish Council recently submitted a response to West Northants sport and leisure team, fully supporting its aim to enhance the quality of life for all residents, supporting investment to improve active travel routes that encourage more people to walk or cycle for all or part of their journeys and offer real social and environmental benefits.
Our Chairman attended the West Northamptonshire Council’s Climate Summit in October along with parish councillors from other villages within the Braunston and Crick ward. This was the first opportunity for a mass gathering of councillors to share ideas and encourage actions at a local level to promote living sustainably.
The Parish Council was pleased to support the planning application for phase 2 of the Maple Close development. (ref 2024/4229/MAF). This will provide 21 more affordable homes for the village.
A representative from the Canal and River Trust attended the meeting to inform us about the major repairs taking place this winter to Lock 3 by the Admiral Nelson. New lock gates are to be installed and the navigation will be closed from 4th November 2024 at 8.00am until 19th December 2024 at 4.00pm. Fortunately the towpath will remain open.
We have agreed to provide a power supply to The Green that will be useful for events and will hopefully be ready to power the lights for our Christmas tree this year.
These are just a few of the many and various topics that we cover at a Parish Council Meeting. Would you be interested in becoming a Parish Councillor? If so, why not come along to one of our meetings and see for yourself?
We meet on the first Monday of every month in the Village Hall at 7.30pm. You are more than welcome to attend and you may decide to join us.
Sue Harrison Braunston Parish Councillor

The Hive
Our ladies group is nearing the end of the year and our last monthly meeting in the Village Hall is on Wednesday 6th November at 2.15pm. We are hosting a demonstration of Flower Arranging for Christmas by Diane. Do join us – guests are only £3.00 including refreshments. We will also have the last raffle to raise funds for DACT.
Wednesday 20th November is our usual coffee morning in The Wheatsheaf at 10.30am.
Braunston CAN (Climate Action Network)
We are a group of Braunston people who are promoting policies and taking local action about climate change.
Last month West Northamptonshire Council invited village representatives across the county to their first Climate Action Summit at Delapre Abbey. There was a lot of discussion about ways we can avoid excessive energy consumption and waste and also on eating better and again dealing with waste. Most of us in the room were shocked to hear that only a third of households in West Northamptonshire use their food caddies or compost their food waste. This is a big challenge to us to increase this so it is the normal behaviour to either compost or use the food caddies supplied by the Council.
You would be very welcome to join us. Please message 07989 421836 or 07554 264742 or use the contact information under climate emergency on the Braunston website.
Our next meeting is at 7.30pm on Wednesday 6th November in the Village Hall.

Braunston Village Gardens Association
We find ourselves zooming to the end of 2024 and the last few days of group gardening. During the winter months we meet regularly for coffee in The Wheatsheaf on a Friday morning, around 10.00am, please join us as we put the world to rights! This has been a busy, successful and, most importantly, joyful year of gardening. The reward of seeing everything (and more, not necessarily planted!) sprouting and flourishing after the quiet time never fails to amaze us.
All the areas we nurture are enjoyed by locals and visitors alike as we are often approached and thanked for our efforts. This year the garden alongside UCC won the prize for best Business Garden in the village gardens competition, so we, and Jono and his staff are delighted. We have started a small project in Jetty Fields garden with funds from the Village Café. This is not complete, but the weather really has been
atrocious. A bench (or two) is being made by the Braunston Canal Society for this area, so we hope you will be able to rest and survey our work in a peaceful location whilst on a walk.
If you are out gardening and find extra plants, please pot them up and donate them to our plant sale next spring, everything accepted!
Gill Astley, for BVGA, gillastley@hotmail.co.uk
Please join us for the BVGA AGM at the Village Hall on Thursday December 5th at 7.30pm. Everyone in the village is automatically a member of the group and no fees are payable. Have your say in what events we run and activities to make our village the attractive place to live that it is. We are a small group that would welcome your ideas and help, so please come along and join our group.

BRAUNSTON HISTORY SOCIETY
Tuesday November 19th 7.30pm in the Village Hall.
THE GAS INDUSTRY OF NORTHAMPTONSHIRE & WARWICKSHIRE
Who remembers the film “Fanny by Gaslight”, which conjures up scenes in a rather tawdry area of London in the 1870s, with streets lit by early gas lamps? Who first discovered how to make coal gas? Why did gaslights get brighter in the 1880s? Who lit the lamps each night? Did you have a gas poker, gas hair curlers, a gas iron or a gas fridge? When was the UK population converted (to natural gas that is!)?
Braunston never had ‘town gas’ and had to rely on oil lamps until electricity came but many towns and villages in Northamptonshire and Warwickshire had their own gasworks and enjoyed the benefits of gaslight. Come and hear John Pomfret talk about the history of town gas, the local gas industry and its effects on society.
We look forward to seeing you all.

Braunston Heart
I thought that as there are a number of new people to the village, I would explain what Braunston Heart is. We are a group that formed to support the community during the first lockdown and subsequently evolved into a Good Neighbours Scheme. We are here for anyone who needs help – all you need to do is ring 0800 002 9066 - leave a message and someone will get back to you. We receive referrals from doctor surgeries or Adult Social Services requesting our help. We are here for you to contact when you are unable to collect your shopping, medication, change light bulbs or even to walk your dog. We will try to help with most things and will signpost where we cannot. This month we got a car started with a flat battery, picked up some medication and arranged transport for a medical appointment.
Part of BH is our event team – The Twinkle Team, bringing the community together, hopefully with fun activities. Booking bands, bouncy castles and activities are costly requiring us to ask for donations to run fundraising events. We ask you to support us and come along to events – we have been fortunate the last two years that grants made through the Household Support Fund for WNC have enabled us to run the summer fun day. At this moment there is no further funding. We are heavily reliant on volunteers; indeed, we are all volunteers, giving our time to support the community. We need more – maybe to be a call handler, to man a road barrier at Christmas, to help with the set up of tables for the table top sale etc – or to be a part of the Twinkle Team. As you can see, volunteering might be just for 30 minutes, when a call comes in, or once a month at a meeting, all is invaluable. We could really use a couple of people who are good at organising, marketing or have ideas – the Twinkle Team has struggled this year with lack of available people –and that includes me.
Please make contact if you can help in any way – we are on facebook, BH email or the Twinkle Team email. Or leave a voicemail. The Twinkle Team hearttwinkleteam@gmail.com
Table Top Sale Saturday 16th November 10am – noon. Village Hall. Please make contact via email or Facebook if you would like a table. £15 a table. Or please come along and see what exciting treasures are for sale.
Twinkle on the Green Sunday 1st December, 4pm – 6pm. Papa George have been rebooked and more importantly, Father Christmas will be delighted to join us again. Please contact us if you would like a stall.

To paint or not to paint? That was the question for the first task party in September. With the weather so unpredictable and the gates at lock 2 still damp from the previous day's rain we decided to cut the hedges at lock 2 instead. With a crew of 5, assisted by 8 volunteers from NatWest Bank, the hedges were cut, arisings stacked and lock maintenance of the flight performed. The rain eventually arrived around lunchtime calling time on a successful morning's work.
For the second outing, with the weather smiling on us for a change, the BCS crew of 8 cleared the weirs at locks 3, 4 & 5. In addition an
overhanging tree was cleared near the tunnel entrance, the bollards edged at lock 3 and the french drain below lock 4 exposed.
Further ad hoc task parties this month saw the completion of the hedge cutting at lock1, the cutting of the hedge at the UCC dayboat parking area and completion of the lock maintenance with painting of the cill markers and edging of bollards.
The Society is always keen to welcome new volunteers so if you would like to come along and have some fun you can email us at braunstoncanalsociety@gmail.com or phone/text us on 07817 435911. If you would like to see our previous activities check out our website at : www.braunston.org.uk/bcs.
Braunston Walkers
Saturday 19/10/24
Heavy rain all night and in the early morning meant that some people cried off. Nineteen of us braved the weather driving to Badby Village Green. We strolled along the Main Street past the former Greyhound pub and started up Bunkers Hill. It was quite a pull to reach the top and then we had to cross the A361 avoiding speeding cars. The rain had cleared and the weather was improving. After a short downhill lane we turned left into a field with a series of awkward and slippery stiles, a real obstacle course. Passing several wet fields and Königssee Farm, named after the owners’ Bavarian honeymoon location, and following a track alongside a huge pond, we arrived at a gate, turned right and climbed a field. I untied a piece of string around the gate and opened it. A huge heavy fence post fell over. As a group we lifted it back into position to shut the gate behind us.
The climb took us up the side of Arbury Hill, the highest point in Northamptonshire at 225 metres above sea level. It’s a metre higher than the adjacent Sherman’s Hill. This is a watershed where three rivers rise. The Nene flows east to meet the North Sea at the Wash, the Cherwell flows into the Thames and the Leam flows into the Avon and out to sea through the Bristol Channel. Most of the river water seemed to be on our path between these two giants. We dodged deep puddles and avoided the mire to a gate turning right over wet fields to reach Catesby. We took a small road into Catesby village and a steep path downhill to the entrance of the magnificent Catesby House with well kept grounds. Growing unseasonably warm, the sun made the old stone house glow.
The trees all round were changing colour and it was fantastic walking through super scenery with Shuckburgh and Braunston in the distance. We crossed a couple of fields to join a gated road that leads into Hellidon, which we climbed through to get to the Red Lion for a well earned rest, refreshment and lunch, having walked 4.6 mileswhich felt like it! Removing wet and muddy boots, we were soon enjoying beer and excellent food. Having told them it was likely to be 10 people they coped very well with 19 of us with very good service.
Pulling on wet boots, we set off for home along a flooded road and farm track going over the old Catesby tunnel now converted to a wind tunnel used for testing cars. Our path was extremely wet where every gate seemed to be in a lake. Struggling on we were, surprisingly, not that muddy. We climbed back up the side of Arbury Hill and dropped to the road back to Badby and the cars, about 2.5 miles .This is a really great local walk.
Our next walk is 16/11/24 when we start at Frankton and visit the Boat Inn, Birdingbury
For our Xmas walk 21/12/24 we are thinking we may walk around Draycote reservoir and have lunch at the cafe there. Details to follow.

Braunston Village Charity
The Trustees are reviewing its list of those villagers who are eligible for a Christmas Gift ready for organising and distributing them in December.
Recipients must be permanent residents of Braunston at Christmas as defined in the Constitution, though they may be away, i.e. in hospital or visiting relatives or friends, over the Christmas period and must meet at least one of the following criteria:
• be 90 years old or more
• be under 18 with a physical, sensory or learning disability
• have a life-threatening/terminal illness
• be in hardship – emotional and/or financial.
If you are aware of someone you think meets the above criteria, please let the Trustees know, either via the Charity’s page on the Village website or using a copy of the Application Form available from Kim Donald in the Village Shop by the 31st November
This year, the Charity has set aside a small budget for one-off grants for villagers in short-term hardship due to the increase in the cost of living.
The Charity also has a small number of quilts available to distribute.
The Charity’s webpage also gives details on how to apply to the Charity and more details on the type of help that can be given.
If you or someone you know still has some unused vouchers, please check the expiry date. It is very helpful if they are redeemed as soon as possible to help the Trustees to better manage the limited funds available to them. The vouchers can be redeemed at the Village Stores, Braunston Fryer, The Village Café and Charisma. The Charity has recently received several donations to support its work; if you would like to make a donation, suggest someone who might be eligible for help from the Charity or want to find out more please contact the Charity via the webpage, or by phone on 07943 486097.
