Kia Rio 2012 Review Posted on July 5, 2013 by mp4mobilephone

In 2010, the Rio was facelifted to incorporate KIA ‘s “Tiger Nose” grille, and for model year 2012, Kia introduced the third generation Rio.The Kia Rio is a subcompact automobile manufactured and marketed by Kia Motors since August 2000 and now in its third generation. Body styles have included a fivedoor hatchback and four-door sedan body styles, equipped with inline-four gasoline and diesel engines, and front-wheel drive. The Rio replaced the first-generation Pride-a rebadged version of the Ford Festiva-and the Avella, a subcompact sold as a Ford in some markets. A second generation was introduced in 2005 in Europe and 2006 in North America, sharing its platform with the Hyundai Accent, a subcompact manufactured by its sister Hyundai Motor Company. In South Korea, the second generation was marketed as the New Pride.第 1/9 页)2013/7/10 15:39:45

Third generation (2011–present) The third generation Kia Rio debuted on March 1, 2011, at the Geneva Motor Show, again based on the Hyundai Accent and featuring a 1.4 L and 138 horsepower (103 kW) 1.6 L Hyundai Gamma engine with GDI and DualContinuous Variable Valve Timing. Transmission options include a 6-speed manual as well as a 6-speed automatic. The Eco automatic model will offer the Idle Stop and Go (ISG) feature, which shuts the engine off when coming to a full stop. According to Kia’s website, the 2012 Rio5 hatchback is available in North America in the fall of 2011, and the sedan in January 2012. In November 2011, the third generation Rio was awarded Semperit Irish Car of the Year and in December was awarded Carsguide’s 2011 Car of the Year award as well, triumphing over many other vehicles including the likes of the Range第 2/9 页)2013/7/10 15:39:45

Rover Evoque and the recently facelifted Ford Territory. The Rio was also awarded as the 2012 car of the year in Slovakia. In 2012 the Rio won the Supermini Scottish car of the year. Test drivers say the updated 2012 Kia Rio sedan and hatchback are examples of an excellent redesign. Unlike the 2011 Kia Rio, the 2012 model is attractive, has good performance, good EPA-estimated fuel economy ratings and a lot more interior features. Many test drivers are surprised that the Kia Rio has such a nice interior. The quality of materials is very good for the class, and the design and layout of the features make reviewers draw comparisons with the Volkswagen Golf. That’s a huge compliment for a subcompact with budget pricing. The 2012 Rio has a standard USB port for iPods, and it can be equipped with features such as navigation and UVO, which is Kia’s voice-activated infotainment system. Both of those optional features stand out among rival subcompacts. Test drivers do mention that drivers on a budget who want a small car with some pep may not be satisfied with the Kia Rio’s performance abilities. On paper, the 138-horsepower four-cylinder engine seems like it would be one of the most powerful options in the class, but overall, they find it’s more practical than powerful. Previously, the automotive industry was dissatisfied with Kia Rio because its performance was unrefined and it looked and felt cheap on the inside and outside. Now, automotive journalists think Kia finally has a contender on its hands. “All said, the 2012 Kia Rio looks to finally be a front-runner in the subcompact segment,” says Edmunds. “Along with models like the Ford Fiesta, Honda Fit and Hyundai Accent, the Rio is a car that should immediately come to mind.”第 3/9 页)2013/7/10 15:39:45

Kia Rio 2012 Review

Kia Rio Interior The 2011 Kia Rio was known for its cheap interior, few standard features and uncomfortable rear seats. All that has changed for 2012, and reviewers are pleased with the Rio’s cabin because it has an impressive list of standard features, good cargo space and a quality feel that was absent in the 2011 model. Seating The Kia Rio’s seats receive a hodgepodge of comments ranging from comfortable to adequate. There’s plenty of headroom, but test drivers take issue with front- and rear-seat legroom because two tall people won’t be able to sit behind each other comfortably. But that’s not an uncommon complaint in this class. However, if you have young children, or if chauffeuring adults is a rare event, the Rio’s seats should suit you just fine. Cargo Overall, the 2012 Kia Rio has a good amount of cargo space for the class, with 13.7 cubic feet in the sedan’s trunk, and 15 cubic feet behind the hatchback’s rear seats. The seats in both models fold, but not flat. With the rear seats folded, the Rio hatchback’s cargo space increases to 49.8 cubic feet. One reviewer says that since the rear opening of the hatchback is small and the load floor is high, it may be difficult to load large items. Kia Rio Performance Reviewers are pleased with the Rio’s improved handling capabilities, smooth transmissions and 138-horsepower engine, even though they don’t combine to create the sportiest vehicle in the class. Kia Rio 2012 Review

With a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 138 horsepower, the 2012 Kia Rio’s specifications indicate that it is one of the peppiest small cars in the class, but no reviewer labels this engine best-in-class. Rather, they say most drivers will be satisfied with the powertrain. With the standard six-speed manual transmission or optional six-speed automatic, there is enough oomph for city commutes and typical highway passing and merging. One of the Kia Rio’s strongest characteristics is its high fuel economy ratings. The EPA says the Rio averages 29/37 mpg city/highway with either transmission. Kia says you can increase your city mileage if you opt for the Idle Stop and Go (ISG) technology, which turns the car off at stoplights or in bumper-to-bumper traffic. Reviews of this system are mixed. Some test drivers call it seamless, while others say it’s obvious when the engine turns on and off. Handling and Braking According to test drivers, the 2012 Rio isn’t race-car agile, but that’s not something they expect from the Kia Rio. Equipped with electric power steering, test drivers find that the Rio’s turns are generally spot-on, which means that it doesn’t turn corners too tight or too wide. But the Rio’s handling isn’t as precise as the Mazda2 or Honda Fit. Some car reviewers think the Rio’s brakes are responsive.
