[ SOUTH SALT LAKE DEVELOPMENT PLAN ]

The city of South Salt Lake is a rapidly growing community but currently has poor urban planning and land zoning. This specific area was our major focus of South Salt Lake because of its proximity to public transportation. The Utah Transit Authority has recently include this area of South Salt Lake to its stops using the Light Rail system. Throughout the analysis our group gathered information on existing transit, land use, and important businesses. From there appropriate zoning was decided based on the overlay of important aspects and proximity to transportation. Incorporating green space throughout the parcels was important for sustainability as well as providing walk-able communities.

OPEN/ REC SPACE HISTORIC CIVIC CENTER MIXED-USE ENTERTAINMENT COMMERCIAL INDUSTRIAL

Throughout the Salt Lake City area the Utah Transit Authority has been greatly developed to accommodate expected population growth. Along the UTA system South Salt Lake has proposed pedestrian trails that will eventually connect to other main areas. Here is a rendering of the proposed system.


COMMUNITY CENTER [ SOUTH SALT LAKE DEVELOPMENT PLAN ]

This is one of the recreation spaces of South Salt Lake which will offer residents a community center, a walk-able park, parking for transit and business incubators. Business incubators in close proximity to the main transit center will allow for the flow of commuters and provide exceptional business opportunities to the community. The pattern of the community garden came from an art piece(near center) to provide a space that is both functional and enjoyable.


COMMUNITY DESIGN [ UTAH STATE STUDENT HOUSING]

The proposal for this site was to redesign the student housing plaza with the goal of creating an inviting space while considering fire truck standards. As a group we all collaborated with several fire lane building code designs in order to select the best for the site. The hammerhead design was the most suitable while still maintaining the linear form of surrounding architecture. Desirable paths were taken into consideration in the design process to provide direct routes from bus stops to entrances to buildings. Additionally, bands of colored pavers are on either side of the concrete to provide visual dominance of pedestrian circulation and to avoid unauthorized vehicular circulation.

For this project there was a proposal for a mixed use development along with student housing. Along the western side a student center, stores and dinning services were proposed. Woonerfs were added down the center to support pedestrian and vehicle circulation while providing a comfortable environment. The curvature of the walkways adds for an interesting circulation pattern while considering desirable paths. To maintain safety paving patterns are established in areas of pedestrian crossing so drivers can visually see the huarache of circulation. This visual change will help make notice the importance to proceed through those spaces with caution.

ENTRY PLAZA

[ AMPHITHEATER & PUBLIC PARK ]

This plaza space was an addition to a master plan for the Landscape Architecture Field Studio. The inspiration came from a radial pattern that starts at the main classroom and continues until the edge of the plaza. To complement the pattern of the design the overhead structures, as well as, the hard-scape match this radial pattern. The custom structure would protect people from sunlight in summer months while allowing sunlight in the winter. For a more sustainable design the paving pattern was broken up with openings in a grid pattern in which ground cover will be planted and water can infiltrate into the soil.


UNIVERSITY PLAZA [ AGGIE ICE CREAM PLAZA ]

This project was to redesign a plaza in front of the famous university ice cream shop on the Utah State campus which serves as a landmark to visitors. My project program included the use of elements such as water and fire to create interesting social gathering areas while providing enough available seating for guests. For my design inspiration I worked around with circular forms that would provide smooth pedestrian circulation while creating a monumental design. Within these spaces are different water features which provide an enjoyable background sound for a soothing experience when visiting the site.


PARK DESIGN

[ AMPHITHEATER & PUBLIC PARK ]

Included is a master plan of a multipurpose park and an amphitheater designed for the Utah State University Botanical Center. Along the edges of the amphitheater are varieties of native vegetation to emphasize sustainability in the Botanical Center and create an enclosed space for guests. The park plan is designed as a multi-use area with a boat launch, hockey rink, splash pad, and multi age specific playgrounds all surrounded by existing vegetation and added native planting to support sustainable design.

PLAZA DESIGN

[ KENT CONCERT HALL UTAH STATE ]

This smaller space, which is between the Fine Arts building and the Kent Concert Hall, is designed to be a space in which students can gather as well as use to quickly get to their destination. When starting the design process circulation was a major factor. Because the concert hall has more continuous circulation it was decided that seating areas were to the north of the building. The trees would provide a buffer so they have privacy from some of the circulation as well as shade throughout the plaza.
