This catalogue is a celebration of the first three years of life of Branding with Type. A project that started on the side while freelancing as a graphic designer, and now is the platform for a growing retail font library (not only mine but also from the talented Thom Niessink and Moritz Kleinsorge) plus a handful of commissioned typefaces. This catalogue doesn’t try to be a thorough font specimen showing every possibility. Instead, it showcases little details of our first 11 retail fonts, published between June 2014 and August 2017. There’s a great bunch of people behind the scenes helping out with all aspects of the business from font engineering to web design, and of course those who buy and use our fonts. Bw Darius Bw Darius is an elegant wedge serif typeface, halfway between the transitional and didone genres, with a sharper approach to terminals without falling on the stiffness of the didones. The wide skeleton, modern proportions and high contrast, all contribute to the opulent personality of this font. Bw Darius allows brands to use the different voice tonalities within the same style. Its tall x-height and open apertures make it fit for display but also body text purposes, performing well both on screen and in print. A

bullion coin is a coin struck from precious metal and kept as a store of value or an investment, rather than used

in day-to-day commerce. The United Kingdom defines investment coins more specifically as coins that have been minted after 1800, have a purity of not less than 900 thousandths and are, or have been, legal tender in their country of origin. Under United States law, “coins” that fail the last of these requirements are not coins at all, and must be advertised as “rounds” instead. Bullion coins are usually available in both gold and silver, with the exceptions of the Krugerrand (note in 2017 the first silver Krugerrand was minted) and the Swiss Vreneli which are only available in gold. The American Eagle series is available in gold, silver and platinum, and the Canadian Maple Leaf series is available in gold, silver, platinum and palladium.

Bw Glenn Sans Bw Glenn Sans is the result of mixing a grotesque skeleton with traits of the British sans serif tradition. The result is a modern sans serif family that speaks with clarity and authority. Its contained width makes it a favourite for long texts while its distinctive details come to life when used as display. Linear speed is the distance travelled per unit of time, while tangential speed (or tangential velocity) is the linear speed of something moving along a circular path. A point on the outside edge of a merry-go-round or turntable travels a greater distance in one complete rotation than a point nearer the centre. Tangential speed and rotational speed are related: the greater the RPMs, the larger the speed in m/s.

Do you want to try one of our fonts on a project for showing a client how it would look like, but don’t want to pay for a license upfront? No worries, we got you covered. Earlier in January 2016 we started testing the idea of the free trial fonts with Fontspring, one of our authorised resellers. Later that year we continued the testing by making the full Bw Surco family and the Regular weight of Bw Modelica available under a demo license. In 2017 we extended the free demo license to the rest of our library, making all our typefaces available for designers to test them and use them on their designs when presenting new ideas to clients for approval. The files include all the characters and all the OpenType features. The only difference is the name of the files and the type of license. On the details page of any of our fonts, right after the description and before the showcase images, you’ll find a link to the demo version that you could install and use for pitching and testing purposes. You don’t have to register, just click download. Easy.

More often than not, and depending on the specific type family, you will find additional characters like stylistic alternates, discretionary ligatures, tabular figures, arrows and other symbols. When we include Cyrillic, we add localised variations for Bulgarian and Serbian unless it’s an old typeface that hasn’t been updated yet. Our Extended Latin character set supports all European Latin languages. If you need a specific glyph that is not included in our current standard set in order to give support to a particular language, please drop us a line and we will add it. Licensing

You don’t buy fonts, you actually buy a license that grants you usage rights in different situations. If you really want to buy an actual font itself, it can be done: We include transfer of Intellectual Property when you commission a new font with us, which effectively will make you the exclusive owner of the fonts, but here we’re talking about the fonts from our library.

If you need to upgrade the number of users, just drop us a line and we’ll discount what you already paid from the new licensing fee.

Our webfont license allows for self-hosted unlimited page-views, meaning that you embed them directly on your website and you don’t have to rely on third parties to serve the fonts to your site. Forget about tracking visits to see if you have to upgrade your license. All this for a one-off fee. What’s not to like?

Font modification

As you have seen so far in this catalogue, our retail typefaces are already unique. Sometimes our clients recognise something immediately that chimes with what they want their brand to express. Sometimes it will require some changes, from language support extensions to introducing features based on other brand assets. When those changes are affecting the structure and the “colour” of the typeface, it would be better to start a bespoke font from scratch. But producing a customised font doesn’t have to cost the world and jeopardize a project’s budget. On this page there are two examples of fast and effective font modification.

Stylistic sets We can easily generate a new font by making the characters of a stylistic set the default ones. It’s a very efficient way of getting a customised font and you save condescending pages of guidelines about OpenType stylistic set activation. On the example above using Bw Glenn Sans Bold, just by swapping three key characters we’ve changed the mood of the typeface completely.

Round or square? Here’s another quick win when looking for both tweaking the feel of the typeface and getting a more ownable asset. A simple change from squared to rounded on the dots of /i/, /j/ and punctuation marks like period, comma, curly quotes,... can completely change how we perceive a typeface. Alberto Romanos Founder and Type Designer In his 14-year graphic design career, Alberto worked in some of the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s biggest branding agencies. With every new brief, he would often start by picturing a new typographic style, even before thinking of a potential colour palette or direction for the brandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s imagery. After creating many brand identities and various side projects involving type, in 2014 he realised it was time to focus completely on his passion: creating high quality fonts. Thom Niessink Type Designer Thom is a designer from The Netherlands with a true passion for typography, clean & simple design and the art section of high quality book stores. After designing various logotypes, he decided to turn one of them into a full typeface, which made his passion and admiration for type designers even stronger. Now, 3 years later, he works as a part-time type designer alongside his graphic design job. Apart from the huge influences of Dutch typography and graphic design, he always strives to give his typefaces its own story, without excluding the room for own interpretation. Moritz Kleinsorge Type Designer Moritz is a graphic and type designer from the Lower Rhine area in Germany. He started his career in different design agencies focusing on digital media. During his studies of Information and Communication Design at the Rhine-Waal University, he discovered his true passion: typography and type design. After graduating, he was mentored by Pilar Cano from Letterjuice via the Alphabettes mentorship program while creating his first retail font, Bw James. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s meticulous and hard-working with a knack for expressive but controlled type design without abandoning the precision every single detail requires.
