Message from the Presidents As we begin the final year of our two-year term, it gives us great pride to be part of such a vibrant and dedicated chapter. Despite the inauspicious beginning caused by Hurricane Irma, thanks to the hard work of our officers, committee chairs and members, and the support of all of our members, our showcase, learning opportunities programs and book sale were over the top, with the year culminating in a fantastic celebration of our chapter’s 40th anniversary. With the awarding of the 2017 Nobel Prize in Physiology/Medicine to two Brandeis professors, BNC is embarking on a new campaign called Magnifying the Mind. The campaign will raise funds for a $500,000 resonant scanning two-photon microscope to support Brandeis scientists and the next generation in their groundbreaking research to help find cures for diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Autism and ALS. Our chapter is proud to support these outstanding discoveries that will impact all of our lives. We look forward to seeing you at the Fall Showcase, the exciting Learning Opportunities sessions and other wonderful events planned for the fall. Fran & Lili

Brandeis Book and Author Luncheon

Center of Dreams by Les Standiford November 13, 2018 at 11:30 AM Location TBA Center of Dreams, written by Miami’s own best-selling author and historian Les Standiford, tells the compelling history of the founding of our magnificent Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts. When the idea for such a complex began in the 1970s, critics said such a cultural center would never be possible in a city so divided by social and ethnic tensions. It was the most controversial public project ever in South Florida, costing close to $500 million. Standiford, Director of the Creative Writing Program at FIU, keeps us turning the pages with all the twists and turns. The Center finally opened in 2006, the largest performing arts complex since the Kennedy Center. It is our very own crown jewel of cultural diversity and architectural elegance. RSVP by November 5 and include your name and phone number. Make checks payable to BNC. Bring your favorite poems to share as we explore poetry’s power. We’ll discuss what poetry has meant throughout the ages and how it enhances our lives. A poet has a way of seeing through the layers of the world; through reading and discussion, we will gain insight into that world.
