Ms. Hrubes’s Classroom Newsletter Thursday, December 3, 2009 Notes and Upcoming Events
A look at the week This week in Math we are continuing on in our discussion about decimals. Students will learn how to compare, add and subtract decimals in this unit. Students also completed a decimal quiz today that will come home tomorrow! In reading, we began The Garden of Happiness. The vocabulary words this week are mural, lavender, haze, inhaled and skidded. Marisol plants a sunflower seed in a new neighborhood garden. When autumn comes and her flower dies, Marisol gets discouraged. Her happiness returns, however, when she discovers that a group of teenagers has painted a mural of sunflowers on a brick wall nearby. In computers, we will begin digital stories.
Scholastic Book Orders are due Friday, December 4, 2009! We will be going to the annual 1st Grader’s Christmas Sale on Wednesday, December 9th. Students will need to bring $.50. Each item costs $.25, and students are allowed to buy 2 items. The Christmas Program is scheduled for Tuesday, December 15th at 7:00 p.m. Cheri Philmore, with the Iowa County Humane Society, gave a presentation today on the 4th grade community service project. Students will be asked to bring in supplies for the shelter instead of having a Christmas exchange in the classroom. Cheri mentioned that cat litter, bleach and laundry detergent were high on their list of things needed since they are used so regularly. You can also visit their website to check out other items to donate. Their website is http://www.ichs.net/
