You Are A Star

by Mr Raja’s Year 6 set Braeburn School

September 2012

Foreword Poetry is not for the faint hearted. It requires a great deal of intense linguistic prowess, a straining of the intellect to spin original thoughts and constructs, a rupturing venting of creative spleens and the unflinching investment of pure heart and guts. With this firmly in mind, I was delighted by the creative productivity of my Year 6 Literacy set. Using some simple writing frames, and taking guidance from a poem I wrote 12 years ago for my incumbent class in 2000 (at a time when my current set were not even born!) they came up with this collection of poems. The poems are based around similes – a literary device we learnt about in our unit Poetry and Imagery. The poems here are sometimes funny, sometimes surprising, and always inspiring. I hope you will enjoy reading these poems as much as Year 6 enjoyed writing them and I enjoyed teaching them.
