Reversing the force of desertification is the primary objective of this proposal. Through this simple act, issues of overpopulation, food production and climate change are drastically reduced globally. Australia is a land of vast plains of desert. Much of this region is lower than sea level- Lake Eyre is at the heart of this basin. Its catchment area is 1,200,000 m2. Lake Eyre flooded in 2010 and lowered the mean global sea level by 10mm because it took over 6 months for water to evaporate and slowly be returned out to sea. Through its capacity to seed clouds the vast structure enables the water within lake eyre to be retained permanently and increased. In doing so it alters the regional climate, terraforming the desert into fertile land.

Vertical City: Existing modes of urban densiication cause desertiication. Natural vegetation prevents the nutrient rich bio-diverse topsoil from eroding. As demand on agricultural regions increases, this vegetatiation is removed. By concieving the city as vertical rather than horizontal it is possible to mitigate desertiication. Greater efficiency in transort and land usage also result. When urban and agricultural land is integrated, the city unit can become independant of external supply. It can expand limitlessly without affecting its efficiency. =

Structure:

The city is conceived as a singular structure- a physical manifestation of the conceptual ideal of a city that is ‘self supporting.’ The cloud seeding tower must be 600 metres tall in order for the air collumn to affect the troposphere . This height is enabled by percieving the structure like a suspension bridge. The large central pylon is in compresion while cables allow the bridge to be suspended. The entire city acts in tensionits form generated by efficient membrane structures exempliied in Frei- Otto’s Olympic stadium in Munich.

There is a desperate need for additional student housing at the University of Sydney. Current housing options are limited and insufficient to match student demand. This project is aimed at maximising the number of students housed whilst minimising the cost of housing to the students. The project is built on a small left over site on campus, the roof of the electrical engineering building, to reduce costs and re-adapt an existing building. The building creates a rich and sustainable living environment for students through passive design principals such as solar access, ventilation, thermal mass, water harvesting and power generation.

Melbourne is known to be the cultural capital of Australia but is missing one important land- mark in the city. The central location of the Flinders Street Station site made it a desirable location for a cultural precinct which included an Opera House. The Opera House has been integrated in to the existing Banana Ally Vaults which are used for performances and events. The site has been linked to the cultural precinct on Southbank creating additional connections over the Yarra River. The landscape has been folded to create a sense of intrigue for the visitors and to form pocket spaces for the train station and performance venues. The forms add to the strong geometries already evident in Melbourne creating a noticeable icon for the city. The form came from a combination of digital and analogue processes exploring spaces with strong geometries to complement the architecture already existing in Melbourne.

A


The aim of this project was to to complete all contract documentation required for tender from a sketch level design. The project was for the all ready existing extension to the Maitland Regional Art Gallery for Maitland City Council. Being the project architect I was responsible for looking after a team of 5 and scheduling the work that needed to be completed in 6 weeks. For this project we produced 24 working drawings,specifications and cost control for the building project showing an ability to communicate this documentation to clients, statutory authorities, consultants, tenderers, contractors and sub-contractors.
