The story of the new Brackley Medical Centre and Community Hospital

STATE-OF-THE-ART MEDICAL CENTRE OPENS IN BRACKLEY An exciting new state-of-the-art medical centre opened in Brackley on Monday 16 November 2020. Brackley Medical Centre and Community Hospital on Wellington Road includes a GP surgery featuring 16 consulting and treatment rooms and a dedicated urgent care unit. The building is also home to a new high-tech pharmacy, located adjacent to the reception area, with a state of the art automated robot picking system. Thanks to a partnership with the Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust, Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Northamptonshire CCG, Dudley Taylor Pharmacies Ltd and Brackley Community Hospital 2020 Trust, other facilities include specialist clinics, physiotherapy and a well-being hub. The Community Hospital, which will include Intermediate care beds ‌ all with en-suite facilities ‌ is expected to open on the top floor early in the Spring of 2021. An X-ray department will also open later in 2021. This album charts the progress of the building work.

MARCH 2020 … LOCK DOWN Hi, my name’s Ali and I’m a receptionist at Brackley Medical Centre. My background is in journalism, PR and marketing. I joined BMC on 11 March 2019 at the age of fifty something (I’m a journalist … I’m not going to give away my age entirely!!) looking for a total career change. However, when asked if I would oversee a photo album cataloguing the development of the new health centre and community hospital I jumped at the chance … and immediately decided that, in addition to using the physical album that had already been purchased, I would also develop an on-line e-publication. As far as text was concerned, it was never my intention to add more than a few headlines and dates … however, I hadn’t anticipated the catastrophic events of March 2020. This album is a chronological history of the building of the new Brackley Medical Centre and Community Hospital … and to that end it is therefore essential that I include mention of Coronavirus, aka Covid-19. I am writing this editorial on Tuesday 24th March 2020. The last few days have seen dramatic changes in the way we spend our lives both at work, here in the NHS, and at home.

March 2020

At the surgery we have ceased most face to face appointments. GP’s are wearing scrubs and masks. We’ve had Perspex screens put up in reception to separate us from patients … and the phone never stops ringing. Pubs, restaurants, cafes, leisure facilities and retail premises have closed. We have all been asked to exercise social distancing. And last night, the Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, gave an historic address to the nation telling us we must now stay at home, with new police powers in place to enforce the strict rules. Individuals are only allowed to leave the house for the purpose of essential food shopping. They may go out once a day for exercise provided they keep their distance from others. And if they really can’t work from home, which most of us in the NHS can’t, then they can go to work. At this stage, what the future will hold we don’t really know. However, as today was my day off I took the opportunity to combine my time out for exercise with taking some photographs of the site as it currently stands. How the development will continue in the next few months only time will tell, however, here you have where we were at when the country went into lock down in the hope of lessening the spread of this dreadful virus.

JUNE 2020 According to the original time scale, the new Brackley Medical Centre was scheduled to have been completed in June 2020. Earlier in the year, our construction manager reported that the site was actually ahead of schedule … but then we were hit by Coronavirus and work shuddered to a halt. The initial shut down was followed by a limited amount of construction activity being able to take place in areas where site workers could socially distance. Then, on Sunday 10 May, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced a limited relaxation of the ‘lockdown’ measures imposed in March ... this included urging construction workers to return to work. But it hasn’t been easy. Supplies have proved hard to get … for example, the hospital flooring was diverted for use at the new Nightingale Hospital in London. Meanwhile the closure of sanitaryware manufacturers led to a delay in the arrival of toilets and hand basins. All in all during lockdown the site has been operating at an average of 25% of capacity … but by the end of June significant progress was visible and staff were invited to visit to see the progress that had been made.

DRIVE-THROUGH FLU CLINICS In October 2020 it was decided to utilise the car park at the new Medical Centre to offer Covid-secure flu immunisations. Patients didn’t even have to get out of their cars ‌ they simply drove in and the nurses administered jabs through the car window.

AND WE’RE FINALLY IN!

November 2020

MAKING HISTORY On Tuesday 29 December 2020, just weeks after opening, the new Medical Centre made history when we administered the first ever Covid-19 vaccinations to be given in Brackley. Our Covid Vaccination Clinics serviced patients from both our own surgery and other surgeries in the area including Towcester Medical Centre, Brook Health Centre and Springfield Surgery. The first vaccines were the Pfizer BioNtech but were soon followed by the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine.
