An Exciting 20Eleven Awaits Us

Pastor Jeff & Becky Crook

2011 THEME :: COMMITTED God is clear on the subject of commitment — He expects it, and He blesses it. Are you committed? Will you make a new commitment in the New Year to join your church family in embracing and living out our theme? I am specifically challenging us to express our commitment in the following ways:

You will see in this issue of the Impact and hear in our weekend services how you can personally express your commitment to Jesus and His church at Blackshear Place. Get ready to be blessed!

2011 TEACHING :: DANIEL We begin an exciting study from the Book of Daniel in 2011. I am looking forward to teaching our church family this captivating Old Testament book in each of our three Sunday morning services beginning on Sunday, February 20. Will you commit to be present each week and bring a friend to hear God’s Word? When we hear God’s Word and obey God’s Word, our lives will never be the same.

2011 TRAVEL :: ISRAEL It’s been a few years since I have led a trip to the Holy Land to walk where Jesus walked. We have a tentative Israel trip scheduled for August 29 – September 7. If you are interested in going with me and Becky, call the Office of the Pastor for specific details and pricing. It will be such a personal joy for us to travel with you to such a special place — a trip of a lifetime! Committed Now More Than Ever, Pastor Jeff

DO

YOU HAVE A

“ TO

DO ” LIST ?

DO

YOU ALSO HAVE A

“ STOP

DOING ” LIST ?

Let’s face it; most of us live busy, congested lives. We’re constantly running to and fro in an undisciplined frenzy. We keep doing and doing and doing and doing more; and rarely get a lot done. This is true in our Christian life as much as in our secular activities. We keep doing so much that we neglect the relationship with the Lord Jesus that is the essence of the Spirit-filled life. Living in a relationship with Jesus often requires as much use of a “stop doing” list as a

6

Blackshear Place Baptist Church

“to do” list. It means unplugging all sorts of junk to focus with a steadfast commitment to the simple Christian practices that stoke the fire of our love relationship with our Lord and King. That is what 2011 at Blackshear Place is all about. It’s a clarion call to stop doing some things in order to focus on some other all-important things. It’s a call to a new level of commitment to connect, grow, and serve. When I say, “COMMITTED,” I think of words such as: devotion, faithfulness, endurance, perseverance, and the list goes on. For 2011, when we say “COMMITTED,” we want to think of passages like Proverbs 16:3, “Commit to the LORD whatever you do.” We want 2011 to be a year COMMITTED to the Lord Jesus. A commitment such as this is a rare and wonderful thing, and we hunger for this to be evident throughout our Blackshear Place family. A commitment centered in Christ; a life that “…stands strong, always giving yourself fully to the work of the Lord” (1 Corinthians 15:58).

GROW DEEPER Now, commitment to the Lord Jesus needs focus and direction. And we have come up with four simple statements to fuel this passion. First, we are calling for all of us to be committed to grow deeper by spending time with God each day. A daily time to talk to the Lord in prayer and to allow Him to speak to us through his Word is essential to building a passionate relationship. To help facilitate this, we are offering Word of Life family devotionals. These materials can be ordered through the church and will provide a central Bible study for every age level in our homes. Imagine how our relationship will grow with the Lord and with one another as we all study God’s Word together each day. Below is a listing of the materials being offered and how they break down for each age level. Early Learners Quiet Time Ë (Ages 4-6) $18 Each vibrant, full-color page contains a daily Scripture passage, an exciting and educational application activity, and an age-appropriate prayer request. It includes a how-to-section for parents.

percent for His glory and in His will. To help, we are offering Financial Peace University in the winter, spring, and fall to assist us in managing our money

Grades 3-4 Á Quiet Time $18 Grades 5-6 Quiet Time $18 Ë These tools will help your child develop a healthy discipline of daily Bible study and prayer. Children can join the rest of the family in learning biblical truths while enjoying ageappropriate puzzles, mazes, and other activities created just for them. Students Quiet Time $18 Ë Students can start the day off right with this simple, yet understandable format of Scripture reading and personal application, with the Daily Supplement to help explain each day’s passage. It features a prayer journal and a Bible-reading schedule to challenge young people to greater spiritual growth. Adults Quiet Time with Commentary $20 Ë This expanded version integrates the daily Scripture passage with practical biblical insights. In addition to the commentary, the book features a Bible-reading schedule and a prayer guide.

A six-session course developed by Andy Stanley that explores the motivation behind sharing our faith. Discover God’s heart for those who don’t know Him and the role that we can play in introducing others to Him.

GO FURTHER more effectively for His purposes. Complete details on page 15.

GET LOUDER The third call of commitment is in the area of personal evangelism. When is the last time you shared your faith? When was the last time you invited a neighbor, coworker, or friend to church? In 2011, we are calling for all of us to get louder by sharing our faith and bringing others to Christ. This is a challenge for each of us to reach one person for Christ this year, bring them to church, and assist in their baptism. The goal is to see people each week in the baptistery with those they have led to Christ. We are committed as a church family to help you do this by offering multiple opportunities for you to learn how to share your faith effectively. Make a commitment today to be a part of at least one opportunity to sharpen your skills in personal evangelism. Some of the classes for the winter and spring are listed below. Living Louder: Sharing Your Faith in Everyday Life (beginning February 2) A six-session course taught by Pastor Jeff W. Crook and Bro. Scott Crook on how to live an infectious Christian life that consistently brings others to Christ. Don’t miss this opportunity to hear how you can GET LOUDER in everyday life.

Finally, we are calling for all of us to be committed to go further by becoming more missional in our service. We were not saved to sit; we were all saved to serve. This call to serve is a call to ramp up our service within the body at Blackshear Place and around the world through short-term mission opportunities. Each week, hundreds of members serve in hundreds of ways, but are you doing all that God wants you to do? If you already serve once a month, is God leading you to serve twice a month? Could He be calling you to do more? He is worth it. Have you ever been on a mission trip? Could He be calling you to take your service “on the road” and serve the King on one of the many short-term mission trips Blackshear Place offers each year (see mission opportunities on page 10). Commitment to serve the Lord Jesus demands our life, our soul, our all.

In 2011, I’m committed to… by spending time with God each day. by tithing and being boldly committed to RGN.

GIVE BOLDER Second, we are calling for a renewed commitment to faithful stewardship with the financial resources God has entrusted to our care. It’s a passionate resolve to faithfully give 10 percent of what God has given us back to Him through regular tithes. This is a call to get the students in the new Student Building by faithfully giving to Reaching Generation Now. And finally, it’s a desire to do all you can to use the 90

Becoming a Contagious Christian (beginning March 23) A six-session witness training course that is designed to help Christians confidently and effectively share their faith. in 2009, Blackshear place made a brave statement, that in the midst of tough economic times, we as a church are Boldly committed to the students in our region.the goal is to provide the facility to reach this generation for christ. as a result, reaching Generation now launched a building campaign that will allow for the construction of a state-ofthe-art, 500-seat auditorium with supporting classrooms, lobby, and student café.the church faithfully committed $1.5 million of the $1.6 million needed to finish seeing this vision become a reality.

as we look toward this goal, we are committed to “get the students in the building.” the process to accomplish this is as follows. $900,000 is needed to complete phase 1 of construction, finishing the building exterior and providing everything necessary for a functioning 500-seat worship auditorium. another $700,000 is needed to continue construction of nine Bible fellowship rooms, to renovate current facilities, and to build the student café. By God’s grace through your faithful giving, strong financial gifts will help us complete construction.

as the student ministry at Blackshear place continues to grow, the need to complete phase 1 becomes more urgent.thank you to everyone who has invested in this project. people have given sacrificially from their monthly income. Others have found creative ways to get involved by donating large-item gifts such as automobiles, coin collections, and even a mountain cabin. if you have yet to join this incredible movement, there is only one thing to say:What are you waiting for? join us in our bold mission to reach this generation now!

THE EXAMPLE OF

ba Rna ba s LIVES

This mountain cabin valued at $250,000 was given to Reaching Generation Now.

In the Book of Acts, Barnabas shines as one of the most mature, reliable, loveable leaders of the early church. And Luke shows us how Barnabas’ trusted ministry began. He sold his field and gave all the proceeds to the apostles. In this story, he stands for the way true faith in Christ creates a bond of love for people and cuts a bond of love for things. Blackshear Place has recently experienced this kind of love for Reaching Generation Now. Bo and Debbie Griffiths have only been members of Blackshear Place since August 8, 2010, moving to North Georgia after retirement. They fell in love with Blackshear Place and with the need to reach teenagers for Christ. “Though we’ve been in several churches, we have never been to a church that has as many committed youth, as does Blackshear Place. It touched our hearts to see the number of youth on any given Sunday or Wednesday,” the Griffiths commented. This love was expressed in an amazing way in November 2010, as the Griffiths gave their mountain cabin in Blue Ridge to Reaching Generation Now. Currently for sale, this cabin is valued at $250,000 and represents the largest donation to RGN. “We don’t need praise — we don’t want praise,” they said. “We want God to receive ALL the glory! We realize firsthand we can never out-give God! Our simple prayer is that this will encourage others to follow God’s call and be boldly committed.”

A

Personal Connection with Jesus Christ In 2 Corinthians 6:2, the Bible says, “Today is the day of salvation!” Are you certain that you have a personal relationship with Jesus? If not, we encourage you to take a few minutes and read below. Jesus wants to connect with you today.

How to Receive the Free Gift of Eternal Life

>

Admit that your sin separates you from a Holy God. “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23)

>

Believe that Jesus Christ died and rose again to pay for your sins. “God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. ” (Romans 5:8)

>

Confess Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, repenting (turning away) from your sin. “If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved.” (Romans 10:9) The free gift of eternal life (Heaven) is yours only through faith in Jesus Christ (Ephesians 2:8-9). Receive it by trusting Him today and praying the prayer of salvation.

Prayer Lord Jesus, I confess that I am a sinner. I repent of my sins and ask you to come into my heart, save me, and be the Lord of my life. Amen. If you just prayed this prayer, we are so very excited for you. Please call our Evangelism Office at 770.534.7058 (218) and let us help you in your newfound faith in Christ. Impact | Winter 2011
