009 was a year of changes...a new Executive Director...the new Student Life Center...new graduates... and new kids. We are grateful to our friends -- old and new! -- who helped us through the changes...and through a challenging year. rittani, one of many new kids who joined our family this past year, with another "new kid" born at the start of the year!
Message from the Executive Director There’s a number of Human Resource articles that suggest it takes a full year to really begin to master a new job. Part of the issue is, “To everything, there is a season”. As I cross the 6-month anniversary line on my calendar, I’m thinking I’ll have to be here that full year before I get to the point where I no longer feel like the new guy! Every day here is different! I was just getting a good feeling for what happens during the summer when the school year started. On that first school day, the kids mysteriously disappeared very early in the morning and then, depending on outside activities, did not return till later in the evening. I truly missed seeing them, as I had become accustomed to the daily group time at the 8:30AM opening of the summer program and for the campus-wide lunch, every day! It was personally harder for me to continue to build relationships with the kids once school started because they were so busy! I looked forward to Sunday nights because that was the (only) meeting time where we could get the Normative Leadership Council together. These are our Campus youth leaders, selected by kids and staff and they are an amazing group of nearly a dozen kids. They sponsored our “Thrilloween” event and sponsored our 1st Annual Boys and Girls Country Blood Drive on January 4th (hosting 30+ donors). All of us believe that few things are more important than instilling in our children the desire to help and serve others. With the school year came re-organization of the Education Lab and the tutoring and homework schedules. For the first time ever, in our new Student Life Center, we were able to offer an “Internet Café” and roomy tutoring workplaces, all in one spot. As the residential and educational staff partnered in our Mission, the bumps in the road mostly disappeared, and we began to see improvement in the kids’ progress reports and grades and a blooming of their own academic confidence. Seeing that kind of progress is better than a paycheck! The kids soon learned that there was a candy dish on my desk and that it was pretty easy to get to. On busy days the candy quickly disappeared, but I told the kids not to worry, I had a special drawer where more of the good stuff was kept. One day, one of the boys stopped in to visit and eyed the candy dish that was less than full. He looked me straight in the eye and said, “Let’s open the secret drawer and get the GOOD stuff out." Nearly every day I come in early in the morning and sign letters and write notes to our donors. Several times a week I call our donors to personally tell them how much I appreciate their sacrifices to help our kids. To date, the smallest donation I’ve seen was $7 and the largest donation was several hundreds of thousands of dollars. I pretty much believe that the person who donated the $7 sacrificed as much for that donation as the person who donated the largest gift. I should also state, the donation that took me most by surprise was a gift of “1 swine and 1 lamb”. One of the other special highlights of the year was attending the Heritage Award Dinner, honoring Penny and Paul Loyd. After I did my little speech in front of the 1,000+ attendees, I called up Rebekkah, one of our young ladies who very articulately shared her life and her time at Boys and Girls Country. In her speech, she shared how she wanted to attend Baylor, a private, Christian College, well out of our price range. The morning after the dinner I checked my voice mail and there was a call from a gentleman who attended the dinner and is also on the Board of Regents for Baylor. He simply offered his encouragement to Rebekkah and told us he’d make sure their Admissions staff would reach out to her. I’m not sure anyone outside of our family here will ever know how happy that made her! Just when I thought I’ve seen it all and would settle into a routine, the Holiday blessings from all of our donors started to arrive. Some donations came on motorcycles, delivered by the “High Rollers”, some came in groups delivered by the likes of the Hoo-Hoo’s, and some came in the trunks of family sedans as one family shared their blessings with our family here. I won’t soon forget the looks and

the smiles on the faces of the kids as the items from their “wish lists” showed up in their laps at their family Christmas celebrations. This also included our College and Career kids who said they were so touched that everyone still cared about them. Another special time for me is getting to visit and interact with the founders of our program. The occasional note and phone call exchanged with Mrs. Robinson is a thrill for me, and her perspective from day one till today is always illuminating. I live in the Lake Lane Property on the 2920 Campus and that home was built by the first Executive Director, Jack Brewer and his lovely wife Carolyn. I visit with them at least once a week and Jack still has that razor sharp focus on what’s best for the kids here. Last week we received a donation from a family that has supported us dating back to the late 1960’s so I gave them a call. It turns out their father, who has since passed away, heard Jack speak back then and offered to help him start our Campus. They told me their contribution to us is in their father’s memory, “Our father was so passionate about this home and we applaud your loving care of these children.” From Jack to Dr. Bearden, to Ms. Shirley to me, our newly acquired saying is “same road, different horse”…..it’s always been about the kids. So, settle into the routine? I don’t think so! Just as each child I’ve met here is totally different and totally individualized, so is each day.
Lou Palma Executive Director
Something theatrical this way comes! It's Macbeth! With the help of our friends at Main Street Theater, we told the gory tale with plenty of sound and fury...and special effects! The incredible cast included A.J., Amber S., Billy, Debra, Desmin, and Diondre, along with guest actor Mr. Jonathan Gonzalez. We are grateful to our friends at Main Street Theater, especially acting teachers Alison Corriell and Caroline Turner, and our friends at CASE, the Cooperative for After-School Enrichment, who sponsored the project. CASE After School Initiative is funded in part by Houston Endowment, Inc.
