Benefiting Boys & Girls Aid
july 31st, 2010 The Party with a Purpose
Join us in celebrating 125 years of impacting the lives of children in need
Last year’s Barn Bash was a tremendous success, raising nearly $160,000 for children. The Barn Bash was created in 2002 by a dedicated board member, Evan Connell. Evan created the vision of an event like no other for Boys & Girls Aid, and since that first Barn Bash, this event has raised nearly $550,000. The Barn Bash takes place in the West Linn/Lake Oswego area on a private farm and the majority of guests are from the local area. We hope you are able to join us on July 31st for an evening filled with live music, dancing, gaming and a good home-style BBQ. Space is limited – so don’t delay in purchasing your tickets or becoming a sponsor. We’d love to have you join this Party with a Purpose.
Boys & Girls Aid Then and Now serving Oregon’s children since 1885
Boys & Girls Aid was founded in 1885 by sixty-two members, including many prominent Portland figures, such as William Ladd, Thomas Lamb Elliot, Henry Corbett and Frank E. Beach. The purpose of the organization, as stated in the articles of incorporation, was “to improve the condition of the homeless, neglected, and abused children of the State of Oregon, and to reclaim criminal minors by means strictly non-sectarian in their character.” Boys & Girls Aid was founded only two years after the transcontinental railroad reached Portland. With growth came rising social tensions and problems, which worried many of Portland’s established residents. Boys & Girls Aid was founded, promising to address the problem of abused and neglected children in a heart-felt attempt to alleviate their suffering. Since 1885, Boys & Girls Aid has helped children in need find safe and permanent homes. Our core purpose is to impact the lives of children in need. We fulfill this purpose through a variety of programs. Our infant adoption program helps birthmothers successfully choose permanent families for their infants. Our Special Needs Adoption Program places children from state foster care in permanent homes. In partnership with the Department of Human Services, we provide temporary safe housing for youth in foster care as well as homeless and runaway youth. Our Mentoring Program also serves children in foster care and youth with an incarcerated parent. Through educational, recreational and individually tailored programming, we are strengthening the role adults play in young people’s lives and finding safe and stable living environments where young people may thrive.
