SMSU had a huge advantage in first downs (34-21). The Mustangs were picked to finish 12th in the NSIC this year in the preseason poll. More on MSUM… Well Received Sophomore Adam Jiskra is the team’s top returning receiver from 2012, and he picked up where he left off during the opening game at Augustana with eight catches for 120 yards. However, two players who did not see time a year ago -- sophomore Preston Prince and redshirt freshman Cory Ambrose -made big impacts in the opener as well. Prince had a team-best nine catches for 83 yards and two scores in game, while Ambrose had four catches for 83 yards and a score. 2013 Captains MSUM’s captains for 2013 are senior linebacker Sam Callahan and junior linebacker Lomumba Ismail. 2013 Schedule MSUM’s 2013 campaign features five home games and six on the road. One of MSUM’s opponents, Minnesota Duluth, is ranked No. 6 in the AFCA Division II Preseason Poll, while Winona State and St. Cloud State both received votes. MSUM’s homecoming game is On the Right Track Seniors Derek Bredy and Laquone Robinson were two of the top track and field athletes for MSUM in recent memory. The two, who combined for

29 NSIC titles and nine All-American honors during their tenure, joined the Dragon football team for the first this fall and will look to be contributors at the wide receiver position. Bredy had two catches for 19 yards in the opening game at Augustana. Youth Movement While Bredy and Robinson are seniors, both are new to the Dragon roster. MSUM returned just four seniors from last year’s team -- linebacker Sam Callahan, kicker Wes Kramer, tight end/ long snapper Tyler Barnes and defensive lineman Mike Mann. The team has just 10 juniors, with the roster of the 85man roster being sophomores, redshirt freshmen and freshmen. Century Club Sophomore Zayne Medhaug has the distinction of being the Dragons’ last 100-yard rusher. The Wahpeton, N.D. native accomplished the feat during the Dragons’ 35-13 rout of MinnesotaCrookston on Oct. 13, 2012, rushing for 124 yards and a touchdown. Hitting the Switch Two of the Dragons’ offensive starters from 2012 once again find themselves atop the depth chart -- this time, on the other side of the ball. Sophomore Garrett Shelley has moved from starting wide receiver to starting strong safety, while sophomore Jake Antolak, who started at center in 2012, is now the starting nose guard for the Dragon defense. Week 2 Under Laqua The Dragons are 0-2 in Week 2 games under Laqua and will look to reverse that trend against SMSU. Two years ago, MSUM lost to Winona State, 48-10 on Sept. 10 and last year, the Dragons lost 45-10 at Sioux Falls. New Radio Home The 2013 Dragon football games can be heard on a new radio home this year, 106.1 FM The Thunder. Steve d’Eustachio and Larry Scott return to call the action. Home Grown The MSUM football team’s roster is represented by seven states, with Minnesota leading the way with 43, athletes, followed by North Dakota with 18.

MINNESOTA STATE UNIVERSITY MOORHEAD DRAGONS A WORD FROM COACH LAQUA

NSIC RANKINGS (2013)

It was the tale of two halves for MSUM during the Dragons’ 41-28 loss to Augustana on Sept. 7. MSUM trailed 41-7 at halftime but outscored the Vikings 21-0 in the second half. “There were a lot of teachable moments,” MSUM head coach Steve Laqua said. “I was happy with the way we responded in the second half. But we need to start better. It was evident there were some firstgame jitters with some of our young guys.” This week, the focus turns to Southwest Minnesota State, which put up 35 points and 477 yards in a loss to St. Cloud State. “We need consistent execution on both sides of the ball,” Laqua said. “That’s really the key. It should be a good football game.”

Steve Laqua is entering his third year as the head football coach at Minnesota State University Moorhead in 2013. The Cavalier, N.D., native has taken on the challenge of helping restore Dragon football to its past glory. Laqua is the 17th coach in Dragon history, being named to the post in the spring of 2011. He came to the Dragons after a turning around the Fargo Shanley High School program, as its head coach for four seasons. The Dragons fielded one of the youngest teams in the NSIC -- starting as many as 11 freshmen in a game -- in 2012 and finished with a 1-10 mark, although the team had close calls against St. Cloud State and Bemidji State in games taken down to the final minutes of the fourth quarter. Safety Shea DeJong was named the NSIC Defensive Newcomer of the Year, while senior defensive lineman Steve Parks was named first-team All-NSIC. In his first season, Laqua led the Dragons to a 2-9 record including an opening-day victory and a thrilling overtime win on homecoming. Four players were named to the All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference team while making a national impact. Jeff Schuette, named to the All-NSIC Second Team, was eighth in the country in tackles followed closely by Tyler Brody, named to the All-NSIC Honorable Mention Team, who was 18th. Prior to his reign at Shanley, the Deacons had two winless seasons, and under Laqua’s guidance became North Dakota State Football Champions during his third year (2009). The team won a tight battle over Devils Lake, 31-30. In 2010, he coached the Deacons to their second state title, as the team topped Devils Lake on a field goal as time expired, 24-21. Laqua was honored as the 2009 and 2010 North Dakota High School AA Coach of the Year. Prior to joining the prep-ranks, Laqua served as the Running Backs, Tight Ends and Punt Team Coach at North Dakota State from January 2005-March 2007, where he coached five All-Americans including Tyler Roehl and Mike Dragosavich. He also served as the Bison’s academic coordinator where he implemented a program that put an emphasis on study skills and a college degree. As a result, the team had 21-Academic All-Conference players during his two-year stint at NDSU. For the 2004 season, Laqua was the Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagles’ Offensive Coordinator, where he led an offense that led the NSIC in rushing yards, yards per attempt and least turnovers. During that season, he directly coached an NCAA DII All-American Frederic Rollins, who was also named a National Player of the Week during the season. His coaching experience also extends to one season at St. Olaf College, in Northfield, Minn., where he was the Outside Linebackers Coach. He also served his first stint at NDSU as a Graduate Assistant Coach for tight ends in 2002-03. Laqua had a decorated career at North Dakota State as a Division II student-athlete, playing quarterback and safety for the Bison. He was an Academic All-Conference member for three years as well as graduated with honors. He earned his Masters of Education from NDSU in 2007.graduated with honors. He earned his Masters of Education from NDSU in 2007.
