MINNESOTA STATE UNIVERSITY MOORHEAD DRAGONS tackles and 12 pass breakups. Redshirt freshman Jesse Beilke has 58 tackles, while redshirt freshman Brandon Nelson leads with two interceptions. Redshirt freshman Aaron Bohl has three forced fumbles, tied for first in the NSIC. About Bemidji State Bemidji State fell to 2-7 on the year with a 45-6 home loss to No. 21-ranked St. Cloud State last week. The loss dropped the Beavers to 0-5 in the NSIC North Division. Bemidji State trailed 38-0 heading into the fourth quarter before getting on the board in the final frame. Bemidji State was outgained 521-290 in total offense. The Beavers possess one of the top running backs in the NSIC in Avery Walker, who has rushed for 1,028 yards and five touchdowns. He is fifth in the NSIC in rushing yardage. The Beavers have started two different quarterbacks, with Ryan Shields leading the way with 506 passing yards and five touchdowns. Josh Malone leads the receiving corps with 23 catches for 197 yards. Bemidji State scores 16.3 points per game and averages 154.4 yards per game on the ground and 120.6 yards per game through the air. On defense, Bemidji State allows 28.1 points per game. Troy Beckett leads with two interceptions while Larry Miller has 11 pass breakups and 12 passes defensed. Top Tandem Sophomore Adam Jiskra and redshirt freshman Cory Ambrose have combined to form one of the top receiving tandems in the NSIC. Their 1,574 combined receiving yards are the most of any tandem in the league, and their 15 touchdowns are second-most of any tandem. Their 99 combined receptions are tied for second in the league, trailing only Upper Iowa’s Lucas Hefty and Derek Giesking, who have 110 combined. Ambrose now leads the NSIC at 91.6 yards receiving per game with Jiskra third at 88.3. Jiskra is sixth in receptions per game (5.78) with Ambrose seventh at 5.22. Ambrose is 30th in the nation in receiving yards and 32nd in receiving yards per game. Jiskra is 23rd in receiving touchdowns. Sack Attack After recording just six sacks through the first seven games, MSUM’s pass rush has stepped up with nine sacks in the last two games, led by four from redshirt freshman Ryan Dahleen, who leads the team with five sacks overall on the season. Bohl and junior Ross Montgomery each have 1.5 sacks during those games for MSUM.

Hodge + Ambrose = Records The passing combination of quarterback Jake Hodge to receiver Cory Ambrose has proved to be explosive -- and recordsetting -- this season. Hodge and Ambrose connected on a 92-yard scoring pass last week in the win over Minot State, which set the record for the longest pass play in school history. IN addition, Ambrose set a school record for receiving yards in a game with 237 in a loss to Minnesota-Duluth, with all of the passes coming from Hodge. Forcing the Issue Not only is redshirt freshman Aaron Bohl ranked third on the team in tackles (52), he is also ranked 12th in the nation in forced fumbles per game at 0.43. He leads the NSIC in that category as well with a total of three. Hodge Ranked Nationally Starting with the game against Concordia-St. Paul on Sept. 28, sophomore quarterback Jake Hodge’s play has been stellar. In his last five starts (he missed the Minnesota Crookston game with an injury), Hodge has completed 122-of-204 passes for 1,706 yards, 17 touchdowns and two interceptions. For the season, Hodge ranks fourth nationally in points responsible per game (25.1), ninth in total offense (348.6 yards per game), 12th in points responsible for (176), 24th in the nation in pass efficiency (151.6), and 24th in passing yards per game (282.7). Week 10 Under Laqua The Dragons are 0-2 in Week 10 games under Head Coach Steve Laqua. The Dragons lost to Northern State, 42-21 in 2011 and lost at Bemidji State, 35-25 a year ago. Record-Setting Day The Dragons’ loss to No. 11-ranked Minnesota Duluth -- which came into the game ranked sixth in the nation in total defense and ninth in the nation in scoring defense -- produced several team singlegame records. Quarterback Jake Hodge threw for a single-game record 472 yards, breaking a mark that stood for six years. Redshirt freshman wide receiver Cory Ambrose caught seven passes for a singlegame record 237 yards, breaking a record that stood for 50 years. The Dragons’ 684 total yards were also a single-game record, breaking a mark that stood for 19 years. 2013 Captains MSUM’s captains for 2013 are senior linebacker Sam Callahan and junior linebacker Lomumba Ismail.

MINNESOTA STATE UNIVERSITY MOORHEAD DRAGONS A WORD FROM COACH LAQUA

NSIC RANKINGS (2013)

The MSUM football team recorded its second straight win with a 31-30 victory at Minot State on Nov. 2. It was the first time since 2010 that MSUM has won back-to-back games. “It was a good win for our program,” MSUM head coach Steve Laqua said. “The kids battled until the end. We did a good job keeping our composure despite being doing by 10 going into the fourth quarter. Our kids showed resiliency.” MSUM’s run defense, which allowed a season low 62 yards to Minot State, will be tested by Bemidji State’s 1,000-yard rusher Avery Walker. “Our defense has been much improved against the run the last two weeks and will be a significant factor in the outcome of this week’s game,” Laqua said. The Beavers have won 13 of the last 15 meetings with MSUM in the Battle Axe game. “Our program has not fared well in the last 15 years against Bemidji State,” Laqua said. “For us to progress as a program wanting to progress -- this would be another significant step.”

Steve Laqua is entering his third year as the head football coach at Minnesota State University Moorhead in 2013. The Cavalier, N.D., native has taken on the challenge of helping restore Dragon football to its past glory. Laqua is the 17th coach in Dragon history, being named to the post in the spring of 2011. He came to the Dragons after a turning around the Fargo Shanley High School program, as its head coach for four seasons. The Dragons fielded one of the youngest teams in the NSIC -- starting as many as 11 freshmen in a game -- in 2012 and finished with a 1-10 mark, although the team had close calls against St. Cloud State and Bemidji State in games taken down to the final minutes of the fourth quarter. Safety Shea DeJong was named the NSIC Defensive Newcomer of the Year, while senior defensive lineman Steve Parks was named first-team All-NSIC. In his first season, Laqua led the Dragons to a 2-9 record including an opening-day victory and a thrilling overtime win on homecoming. Four players were named to the All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference team while making a national impact. Jeff Schuette, named to the All-NSIC Second Team, was eighth in the country in tackles followed closely by Tyler Brody, named to the All-NSIC Honorable Mention Team, who was 18th. Prior to his reign at Shanley, the Deacons had two winless seasons, and under Laqua’s guidance became North Dakota State Football Champions during his third year (2009). The team won a tight battle over Devils Lake, 31-30. In 2010, he coached the Deacons to their second state title, as the team topped Devils Lake on a field goal as time expired, 24-21. Laqua was honored as the 2009 and 2010 North Dakota High School AA Coach of the Year. Prior to joining the prep-ranks, Laqua served as the Running Backs, Tight Ends and Punt Team Coach at North Dakota State from January 2005-March 2007, where he coached five All-Americans including Tyler Roehl and Mike Dragosavich. He also served as the Bison’s academic coordinator where he implemented a program that put an emphasis on study skills and a college degree. As a result, the team had 21-Academic All-Conference players during his two-year stint at NDSU. For the 2004 season, Laqua was the Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagles’ Offensive Coordinator, where he led an offense that led the NSIC in rushing yards, yards per attempt and least turnovers. During that season, he directly coached an NCAA DII All-American Frederic Rollins, who was also named a National Player of the Week during the season. His coaching experience also extends to one season at St. Olaf College, in Northfield, Minn., where he was the Outside Linebackers Coach. He also served his first stint at NDSU as a Graduate Assistant Coach for tight ends in 2002-03. Laqua had a decorated career at North Dakota State as a Division II student-athlete, playing quarterback and safety for the Bison. He was an Academic All-Conference member for three years as well as graduated with honors. He earned his Masters of Education from NDSU in 2007.graduated with honors. He earned his Masters of Education from NDSU in 2007.
